A new exciting era in the study of rapidly solidified alloys has been ushered in by the discovery of a quasicrystalline phase in an Al-1O%Mn alloy by Shechtman et al. (l). The fact that a quasicrystal diffracts electrons and X-rays like a single crystal provides a powerful approach for exploring the atomic configuration in these alloys. Shechtman et al deduced the icosahedral point group symmetry exhibited by quasicrystals on the basis of a set of three electron diffraction patterns showing 5-fold, 3-fold and 2-fold axes of symmetry with appropriate angular relationships. The exotic crystallography of quasicrystals has been recently reviewed by Nelson and Halperin (2).

Acta Crystallographica Section A: Foundations of Crystallography covers theoretical and fundamental aspects of the structure of matter. The journal is the prime forum for research in diffraction physics and the theory of crystallographic structure determination by diffraction methods using X-rays, neutrons and electrons. The structures include periodic and aperiodic crystals, and non-periodic disordered materials, and the corresponding Bragg, satellite and diffuse scattering, thermal motion and symmetry aspects. Spatial resolutions range from the subatomic domain in charge-density studies to nanodimensional imperfections such as dislocations and twin walls. The chemistry encompasses metals, alloys, and inorganic, organic and biological materials. Structure prediction and properties such as the theory of phase transformations are also covered.

We study the energetics of the accretion-induced outflow and then plausible jet around black holes/compact objects using a newly developed disc-outflow coupled model. Inter-connecting dynamics of outflow and accretion essentially upholds the conservation laws. The energetics depend strongly on the viscosity parameter α and the cooling factor f which exhibit several interesting features. The bolometric luminosities of ultra-luminous X-ray binaries (e.g. SS433) and family of highly luminous AGNs and quasars can be reproduced by the model under the super-Eddington accretion flows. Under appropriate conditions, low-luminous AGNs (e.g. Sagittarius A*) also fit reasonably well with the luminosity corresponding to a sub-Eddington accretion flow with f→1.

High mass X-ray binary (HMXB) pulsars are of two types, persistent and transient. 4U1538-52 is a persistent HMXB whose orbit was previously measured to be circular but the RXTE observations revealed an eccentric orbit. We observed this system with RXTE-PCA in August 2003 and our timing analysis supports the eccentric orbit of the system. However, we do not find any evidence for orbital evolution. Rotational and tidal interactions between the stars of a closed binary system result in apsidal motion which can be measured in systems with eccentric orbit. 4U0115+63 is a Be-transient HMXB whose eccentric orbit was well-determined during its 1978 outburst. We report preliminary results from analysis of data obtained during the 1999 outburst of this source with the RXTE-PCA.

Be/X-ray binary pulsars have wide eccentric orbits and hence the angle of periastron of the orbit is very well defined in these sources. The presence of an X-ray pulsar allows for accurate measurements of orbital elements. A Be star usually is a rapidly rotating star and hence will deviate from spherical geometry. The tidal interaction between the neutron star and the Be star will add to the distortion of the Be star and alter its mass distribution. Thus a measurable rate of apsidal motion is expected from these systems. In this paper, we present the first conclusive detection of apsidal motion of the binary 4U 0115+63. We also present new and accurate orbital parameters of the Be/X-ray binaries V0332+53 and 2S 1417-624.

Interaction of carbon monoxide with a few chosen bimetallic overlayers has been investigated along with the core-level binding energies of the deposited metals by employing X-rays as well as UV photoelectron spectroscopies. Core-level binding energies of the deposited metals around monolayer coverages (0 similar to 1) are significantly different than those at high coverages or of the pure metals. Bimetallic overlayers such as Ni/Au and Cu/Pt showing large negative shifts in the surface core-level binding energy of the deposited metal interact strongly with carbon monoxide. In the case of Ni/Au (0(Ni) similar to 0.85), CO dissociates around 280 K. In contrast to this behavior, the interaction of CO with Pd/Mo or W, showing large positive shifts in the surface core-level binding energy, is very weak, and the CO desorption temperature is much lower than that from the clean Pd metal surface. The CO desorption temperature generally increases as the surface core-level shift of the deposited metal becomes more negative; the separation between the (5 sigma + 1 pi) and 4 sigma levels of CO also increases in this direction. These results suggest that the variation in the strength of interaction of CO with bimetallic overlayers is a chemical manifestation of the shift in the surface core-level binding energies of the deposited metals at monolayer coverages.

Zirconia-based solid electrolytes with zircon (ZrSiO4) as the auxiliary electrode have been suggested of sensing silicon concentrations in iron and steel melts. A knowledge of phase relations in the ternary system MO-SiO2-ZrO2 (M = Ca, Mg) is useful for selecting an appropriate auxiliary electrode. In this investigation, an isothermal section for the phase diagram of the system CaO-SiO2ZrO2 at 1573 K has been established by equilibrating mixtures of component oxides in air, followed by quenching and phase identification by optical miroscopy, energy disperse analysis of X-rays (EDAX) and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). The equilibrium phase relations have also been confirmed by computation using the available thermodynamic data on condensed phases in the system. The results indicate that zircon is not in thermodynamic equilibrium with calcia-stabilized zirconia or calcium zirconate. The silica containing phase in equilibrium with stabilized zirconia is Ca3ZrSi2O9. Calcium zirconate can coexist with Ca3ZrSi2O9 and Ca2SiO4.

Phase relations in the system La-Rh-O at 1223 Ii have been determined by examination of equilibrated samples by optical and scanning electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), and energy-dispersive analysis of X-rays (EDAX). Only one ternary oxide, LaRhO3, with distorted orthorhombic perovskite structure (Pbnm, a = 0.5525, b = 0.5680, and c = 0.7901 nm) was identified. The alloys and intermetallics along the La-Rh binary are in equilibrium with La2O3. The thermodynamic properties of LaRhO3 were determined in the temperature range 890 to 1310 K, using a solid-state cell incorporating yttria-stabilized zirconia as the electrolyte. A new four-compartment design of the emf cell was used to enhance the accuracy of measurement. For the reaction 1/2La(2)O(3) + 1/2Rh(2)O(3) --> LaRhO3, Delta G degrees = - 70 780 + 4.89T (+/- 90) J.mol(-1) The compound decomposes on heating to a mixture of La2O3, Ph and O-2. The calculated decomposition temperatures are 1843 (+/- 5) K in pure O-2 and 1728 (+/- 5) K in air at a pressure of 1.01 x 10(5) Pa. The phase diagrams for the system La-Rh-O at different partial pressures of oxygen are calculated from the thermodynamic information.

Phase relationships in the CaO-SrO-CuO system in pure oxygen at 1.01 x 10(5) Pa pressure were determined by equilibrating different compositions at 1123 K for similar to 120 h and analyzing the phases present in the quenched samples using X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical and scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive analysis of X-rays (EDAX). Four solid solution series were observed in the system, The CawSr1-wO monoxide solid solution with rock-salt structure was found to exhibit an asymmetric miscibility gap, The mixing properties of the monoxide system were deduced using a subregular solution model, For the (CaxSr1-x)(2)CuO3 series, a complete solid solution range with orthorhombic space group Immm was obtained. Calcium substituted for strontium up to 68 at. % in SrCuO2+delta and 51.5 at. % in Sr14Cu24O41-delta. The tie lines between the solid solutions were determined accurately, The activity-composition relations in (CaxSr1-x)(2)CuO3, CaySr1-yCuO2+delta, and (Ca2Sr1-z)(14)Cu24O41-delta solid solutions were determined from experimental tie lines. Activities in the (CaxSr1-x)(2)CuO3 and CaySr1-yCuO2+delta series were close to the predictions of the Temkin model, The behavior of the (CazSr1-(z))(14)Cu24O41-delta solid solution was more complex, with the activity of SrCu(24/14)O-(41-delta/14) exhibiting both positive and negative deviations from ideality. Gibbs energy of formation of the CaCuO2+delta metastable phase at 1123 K was deduced from an analysis of the phase diagram.

Members of the Ba2Zn1-xCdxTa2O9 (0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 1) series have been synthesized by solid state reactions at 1473K. Powder x-ray diffraction studies show a cubic perovskite cell with a similar to 4.1 Angstrom which increases with increase in x. Electron diffraction studies show the presence of hexagonal ordered perovskite structure in addition to the cubic structure seen by x-rays, the x = 0.5 composition showing more ordered crystallites. These samples show high dielectric constants with a maximum (epsilon(r) = 30 at 1 kHz) for the x = 0.5 member. The dielectric loss increases with increase in x at all the frequencies under study.

A long-standing and important problem in glass science has been carrier-type reversal (CTR) in semiconducting glasses. This phenomenon is exhibited by Pb-Ge-Se glasses also. It has been addressed here by carrying out detailed electrical, thermal, and spectroscopic investigations. PbxGe42-xSe58 (x = 0-20) glasses were prepared by a two stage melt-quenching process and characterized using x-ray diffraction, high-resolution electron microscropy, and energy dispersive analysis of x-rays. Thermoelectric power and high-pressure electrical resistivity have been measured. IR, Raman, and X-ray adsorption near edge structure spectroscopies have been used for examining the glass structures as well as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) for studying the thermal properties. A structural model based on the chemical nature of the constituents has been proposed to account for the observed properties of these glasses. Effect of Pb incorporation on local structures and qualitative consequences on the energy band structures of Ge-Se glasses has been considered. The p -->n transition has been attributed to the energetic disposition of the sp(3)d(2) band of Pb atoms, which is located closely above the lone pair band of selenium. This feature makes Pb unique in the context of p -->n transition of chalcogenide glasses. The model can be extended successfully to account for the CTR behavior observed in Bi containing chalcogenide glasses also.

The photochromic, electrochromic and x-ray irradiation damages (commonly called the gray tracks) produced in KTiOPO4 single crystals have been studied using photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. Gray tracks were produced in this material by exposure to high laser powers (similar to MW/cm(2)), application of electric fields (similar to kV), and exposure to x rays (30 kV). The PL spectra recorded for such gray tracked samples at 4.2 K, exhibited a luminescence band in the 1-1.8 eV range with a peak at 1.41 eV. Temperature and excitation intensity dependence of PL peaks were carried out to probe the exact nature of the broad emission band in the gray tracked samples. The observed photoluminescence is attributed to transitions in the Ti3+ levels, created on irradiation. The microscopic effects produced in the crystal by electric field, optical field, and x rays are similar, as can be concluded from the similarity of PL spectra as well as their intensity and temperature dependences. The effect of Fe content (0.2 to 0.6 pct) on the microstructure and mechanical properties of a cast Al-7Si-0.3Mg (LM 25/356) alloy has been investigated. Further, 1 pct mischmetal (MM) additions (a mixture of rare-earth (RE) elements) were made to these alloys, and their mechanical properties at room and at elevated temperatures (up to 200 degreesC) were evaluated. A structure-property correlation on this alloy was attempted using optical microstructure analysis, fractographs, X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive analysis of X-rays (EDX), and quantitative metallography by image analysis. An increase in Fe content increased the volume percentage of Fe-bearing intermetallic compounds (beta and pi phases), contributing to the lower yield strength (YS), ultimate tensile strength (UTS), percentage elongation, and higher hardness. An addition of 1 pct MM to the alloys containing 0.2 and 0.6 pct Fe was found to refine the microstructure; modify the eutectic silicon and La, Ce, and Nd present in the MM; form different intermetallic compounds with Al, Si, Fe, and Mg; and improve the mechanical properties of the alloys both at room and elevated temperatures.
