Electromagnetic field produced by a lightning strike to ground causes significant induction to tall objects in the vicinity. The frequency of occurrence of such nearby ground strikes can be higher than the number of direct strikes. Therefore, a complete knowledge on these induced currents is of practical relevance. However, limited efforts towards the characterisation of such induced currents in tall down-conductors could be seen in the literature. Due to the intensification of the background field caused by the descending stepped leader, tall towers/down-conductors can launch upward leaders of significant length. The nonlinearity in the conductance of upward leader and the surrounding corona sheath can alter the characteristics of the induced currents. Preliminary aspects of this phenomenon have been studied by the author previously and the present work aims to perform a detailed investigation on the role of upward leaders in modifying the characteristics of the induced currents. A consistent model for the upward leader, which covers all the essential electrical aspects of the phenomena, is employed. A first order arc model for representing the conductance of upward leader and a field dependant quadratic conductivity model for the corona sheath is employed. The initial gradient in the upward leader and the field produced by the return stroke forms the excitation. The dynamic electromagnetic response is determined by solving the wave equation using thin-wire time-domain formulation. Simulations are carried out initially to ascertain the role of individual parameters, including the length of the upward leader. Based on the simulation results, it is shown that the upward leader enhances the induced current, and when significant in length, can alter the waveshape of induced current from bipolar oscillatory to unipolar. The duration of the induced current is governed by the length of upward leader, which in turn is dependant on the return stroke current and the effective length of the down-conductor. If the current during the upward leader developmental phase is considered along with that after the stroke termination to ground, it would present a bipolar current pulse. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. The classical problem of surface water-wave scattering by two identical thin vertical barriers submerged in deep water and extending infinitely downwards from the same depth below the mean free surface, is reinvestigated here by an approach leading to the problem of solving a system of Abel integral equations. The reflection and transmission coefficients are obtained in terms of computable integrals. Known results for a single barrier are recovered as a limiting case as the separation distance between the two barriers tends to zero. The coefficients are depicted graphically in a number of figures which are identical with the corresponding figures given by Jarvis (J Inst Math Appl 7:207-215, 1971) who employed a completely different approach involving a Schwarz-Christoffel transformation of complex-variable theory to solve the problem.

An exact representation of N-wave solutions for the non-planar Burgers equation u(t) + uu(x) + 1/2ju/t = 1/2deltau(xx), j = m/n, m < 2n, where m and n are positive integers with no common factors, is given. This solution is asymptotic to the inviscid solution for Absolute value of x < square-root (2Q0 t), where Q0 is a function of the initial lobe area, as lobe Reynolds number tends to infinity, and is also asymptotic to the old age linear solution, as t tends to infinity; the formulae for the lobe Reynolds numbers are shown to have the correct behaviour in these limits. The general results apply to all j = m/n, m < 2n, and are rather involved; explicit results are written out for j = 0, 1, 1/2, 1/3 and 1/4. The case of spherical symmetry j = 2 is found to be 'singular' and the general approach set forth here does not work; an alternative approach for this case gives the large time behaviour in two different time regimes. The results of this study are compared with those of Crighton & Scott (1979).

Exact N-wave solutions for the generalized Burgers equation u(t) + u(n)u(x) + (j/2t + alpha) u + (beta + gamma/x) u(n+1) = delta/2u(xx),where j, alpha, beta, and gamma are nonnegative constants and n is a positive integer, are obtained. These solutions are asymptotic to the (linear) old-age solution for large time and extend the validity of the latter so as to cover the entire time regime starting where the originally sharp shock has become sufficiently thick and the viscous effects are felt in the entire N wave.

A fuzzy logic based centralized control algorithm for irrigation canals is presented. Purpose of the algorithm is to control downstream discharge and water level of pools in the canal, by adjusting discharge release from the upstream end and gates settings. The algorithm is based on the dynamic wave model (Saint-Venant equations) inversion in space, wherein the momentum equation is replaced by a fuzzy rule based model, while retaining the continuity equation in its complete form. The fuzzy rule based model is developed on fuzzification of a new mathematical model for wave velocity, the derivational details of which are given. The advantages of the fuzzy control algorithm, over other conventional control algorithms, are described. It is transparent and intuitive, and no linearizations of the governing equations are involved. Timing of the algorithm and method of computation are explained. It is shown that the tuning is easy and the computations are straightforward. The algorithm provides stable, realistic and robust outputs. The disadvantage of the algorithm is reduced precision in its outputs due to the approximation inherent in the fuzzy logic. Feed back control logic is adopted to eliminate error caused by the system disturbances as well as error caused by the reduced precision in the outputs. The algorithm is tested by applying it to water level control problem in a fictitious canal with a single pool and also in a real canal with a series of pools. It is found that results obtained from the algorithm are comparable to those obtained from conventional control algorithms.

The theoretical analysis, based on the perturbation technique, of ion-acoustic waves in the vicinity of a Korteweg-de Vries (K-dV) equation derived in a plasma with some negative ions has been made. The investigation shows that the negative ions in plasma with isothermal electrons introduced a critical concentration at which the ion-acoustic wave plays an important role of wave-breaking and forming a precursor while the plasma with non-isothermal electrons has no such singular behaviour of the wave. These two distinct features of ion waves lead to an overall different approach of present study of ion-waves. A distinct feature of non-uniform transition from the nonisothermal case to isothermal case has been shown. Few particular plasma models have been chosen to show the characteristics behaviour of the ion-waves existing in different cases

This paper presents a formulation of an approximate spectral element for uniform and tapered rotating Euler-Bernoulli beams. The formulation takes into account the varying centrifugal force, mass and bending stiffness. The dynamic stiffness matrix is constructed using the weak form of the governing differential equation in the frequency domain, where two different interpolating functions for the transverse displacement are used for the element formulation. Both free vibration and wave propagation analysis is performed using the formulated elements. The studies show that the formulated element predicts results, that compare well with the solution available in the literature, at a fraction of the computational effort. In addition, for wave propagation analysis, the element shows superior convergence. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

An integrodifferential formulation for the equation governing the Alfvén waves in inhomogeneous magnetic fields is shown to be similar to the polyvibrating equation of Mangeron. Exploiting this similarity, a time‐dependent solution for smooth initial conditions is constructed. The important feature of this solution is that it separates the parts giving the Alfvén wave oscillations of each layer of plasma and the interaction of these oscillations representing the phase mixing.

Exact travelling wave solutions for hydromagnetic waves in an exponentially stratified incompressible medium are obtained. With the help of two integrals it becomes possible to reduce the system of seven nonlinear PDE's to a second order nonlinear ODE which describes an one dimensional harmonic oscillator with a nonlinear friction term. This equation is studied in detail in the phase plane. The travelling waves are periodic only when they propagate either horizontally or vertically. The reduced second order nonlinear differential equation describing the travelling waves in inhomogeneous conducting media has rather ubiquitous nature in that it also appears in other geophysical systems such as internal waves, Rossby waves and topographic Rossby waves in the ocean.

This paper presents the strong nonlocal scale effect on the flexural wave propagation in a monolayer graphene sheet. The graphene is modeled as an isotropic plate of one atom thick. Nonlocal governing equation of motion is derived and wave propagation analysis is performed using spectral analysis. The present analysis shows that the flexural wave dispersion in graphene obtained by local and nonlocal elasticity theories is quite different. The nonlocal elasticity calculation shows that the wavenumber escapes to infinite at certain frequency and the corresponding wave velocity tends to zero at that frequency indicating localization and stationary behavior. This behavior is captured in the spectrum and dispersion curves. The cut-off frequency of flexural wave not only depend on the axial wavenumber but also on the nonlocal scaling parameter. The effect of axial wavenumber on the wave behavior in graphene is also discussed in the present manuscript. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Short elliptical chamber mufflers are used often in the modern day automotive exhaust systems. The acoustic analysis of such short chamber mufflers is facilitated by considering a transverse plane wave propagation model along the major axis up to the low frequency limit. The one dimensional differential equation governing the transverse plane wave propagation in such short chambers is solved using the segmentation approaches which are inherently numerical schemes, wherein the transfer matrix relating the upstream state variables to the downstream variables is obtained. Analytical solution of the transverse plane wave model used to analyze such short chambers has not been reported in the literature so far. This present work is thus an attempt to fill up this lacuna, whereby Frobenius solution of the differential equation governing the transverse plane wave propagation is obtained. By taking a sufficient number of terms of the infinite series, an approximate analytical solution so obtained shows good convergence up to about 1300 Hz and also covers most of the range of muffler dimensions used in practice. The transmission loss (TL) performance of the muffler configurations computed by this analytical approach agrees excellently with that computed by the Matrizant approach used earlier by the authors, thereby offering a faster and more elegant alternate method to analyze short elliptical muffler configurations. This work deals with the effects of weak nonlinearity and weak dissipation on a linear wave in relativistic gasdynamics. Using perturbation and asymptotic expansions, a relativistic analogue of generalised one-dimensional Burgers' equation of classical gasdynamics is derived to describe far-field description of the wave. Steady state solution is presented for strict one-dimensional case.
