Experimental and numerical studies of slurry generation using a cooling slope are presented in the paper. The slope having stainless steel body has been designed and constructed to produce semisolid A356 Al alloy slurry. The pouring temperature of molten metal, slope angle of the cooling slope and slope wall temperature were varied during the experiment. A multiphase numerical model, considering liquid metal and air, has been developed to simulate the liquid metal flow along the cooling channel using an Eulerian two-phase flow approach. Solid fraction evolution of the solidifying melt is tracked at different locations of the cooling channel following Schiel's equation. The continuity, momentum and energy equations are solved considering thin wall boundary condition approach. During solidification of the melt, based on the liquid fraction and latent heat of the alloy, temperature of the alloy is modified continuously by introducing a modified temperature recovery method. Numerical simulations has been carried out for semisolid slurry formation by varying the process parameters such as angle of the cooling slope, cooling slope wall temperature and melt superheat temperature, to understand the effect of process variables on cooling slope semisolid slurry generation process such as temperature distribution, velocity distribution and solid fraction of the solidifying melt. Experimental validation performed for some chosen cases reveals good agreement with the numerical simulations.

In the present study, electrodeposition technique was used to produce Ag-Ni nanowires. Ag-Ni system shows extremely high bulk immiscibility. Nanowire morphology was achieved by employing an anodic alumina membrane having pores of similar to 200 nm diameter. Microstructure of as-deposited wire was composed of nano-sized solid solution structured Ag-Ni nanoparticles embedded in a matrix of pure Ag phase. It is proposed that the two phase microstructure resulted from an initial formation of solid solution structured nanoparticles in the alumina template pore followed by nucleation of pure Ag phase over the particles which eventually grew to form the matrix phase. An attempt to study the fluid dynamic behavior of two phase flow comprising of solid and liquid with nearly equal density in a geometrical case that has an industrial significance in theareas like processing of polymers, food, pharma ceutical, paints. In this work, crystalline silica is considered as the dispersed medium in glycerin. In the CFD analysis carried out,the two phase components are considered to be premixed homogeneously at the initial state. The flow in a cylinder that has an axially driven bi-lobe rotor, a typical blender used in polymer industry for mixing or kneading to render the multi-component mixture to homogeneous condition is considered. A viscous, incompressible, isothermal flow is considered with an assumption that the components do not undergo any physical change and the solids are rigid and mix in fully wetting conditions. Silica with a particle diameter of 0.4 mm is considered and flow is analyzed for different mixing fractions. An industry standard CFD code is used for solving 3D-RANS equations. As the outcome of the study the torque demand by the bi-lobe rotor for different mixture fractions which are estimated show a behavioral consistency to the expected physical phenomena occurring in the domain considered.

The thermoelectric figure of merit (zT) can be increased by introduction of additional interfaces in the bulk to reduce the thermal conductivity. In this work, PbTe with a dispersed indium (In) phase was synthesized by a matrix encapsulation technique for different In concentrations. x-Ray diffraction analysis showed single-phase PbTe with In secondary phase. Rietveld analysis did not show In substitution at either the Pb or Te site, and this was further confirmed by room-temperature Raman data. Low-magnification (similar to 1500x) scanning electron microscopy images showed micrometer-sized In dispersed throughout the PbTe matrix, while at high magnification (150,000x) an agglomeration of PbTe particles in the hot-pressed samples could be seen. The electrical resistivity (rho) and Seebeck coefficient (S) were measured from 300 K to 723 K. Negative Seebeck values showed all the samples to be n-type. A systematic increase in resistivity and higher Seebeck coefficient values with increasing In content indicated the role of PbTe-In interfaces in the scattering of electrons. This was further confirmed by the thermal conductivity (kappa), measured from 423 K to 723 K, where a greater reduction in the electronic as compared with the lattice contribution was found for In-added samples. It was found that, despite the high lattice mismatch at the PbTe-In interface, phonons were not scattered as effectively as electrons. The highest zT obtained was 0.78 at 723 K for the sample with the lowest In content.

Detailed investigation of the chemical states and local atomic environment of Ni and Zn in the two-phase composites of Zn1-xNixO/NiO was reported. The X-ray photoelectron spectra of both Ni-2p and Zn-2p revealed the existence of a doublet with spin-orbit splitting approximate to 17.9 and 23.2eV, respectively confirming the divalent oxidation state of both Ni and Zn. However, the samples fabricated under oxygen-rich conditions exhibit significant difference in the binding energy approximate to 18.75eV between the 2p3/2 and 2p1/2 states of Ni. The shift in the satellite peaks of Ni-2p with increasing the Ni composition x within the Zn1-xNixO/NiO matrix signifies the attenuation of nonlocal screening because of reduced site occupancy of two adjacent Zn ions. The temperature dependence of X-ray diffraction analysis reveals a large distortion in the axial-rhombohedral angle for oxygen-rich NiO. Conversely, no significant distortion was noticed in the NiO system present as a secondary phase within Zn1-xNixO. Nevertheless, the unit-cell volume of both wurtzite h.c.p. Zn1-xNixO and f.c.c. NiO exhibits an anomalous behavior between 150 and 300 degrees C. The origin of such unusual change in the unit-cell volume was discussed in terms of oxygen stoichiometry.

Phase change heat transfer in porous media finds applications in various geological flows and modern heat pipes. We present a study to show the effect of phase change on heat transfer in a porous channel. We show that the ratio of Jakob numbers based on wall superheat and inlet fluid subcooling governs the liquid-vapor interface location in the porous channel and below a critical value of the ratio, the liquid penetrates all the way to the extent of the channel in the flow direction. In such cases, the Nusselt number is higher due to the proximity of the liquid-vapor interface to the heat loads. For higher heat loads or lower subcooling of the liquid, the liquid-vapor interface is pushed toward the inlet, and heat transfer occurs through a wider vapor region thus resulting in a lower Nusselt number. This study is relevant in the designing of efficient two-phase heat exchangers such as capillary suction based heat pipes where a prior estimation of the interface location for the maximum heat load is required to ensure that the liquid-vapor interface is always inside the porous block for its operation.

Thermal interface materials (TIMs) form a mechanical and thermal link between a heat source and a heat sink. Thus, they should have high thermal conductivity and high compliance to efficiently transfer heat and accommodate any differential strain between the heat source and the sink, respectively. This paper reports on the processing and the characterization of potential metallic TIM composite solders comprising of Cu, a high conductivity phase, uniformly embedded in In matrix, a highly compliant phase. We propose the fabrication of such a material by a two-step fabrication technique comprising of liquid phase sintering (LPS) followed by accumulative roll bonding (ARB). To demonstrate the efficacy of the employed two-step processing technique, an In-40 vol. % Cu composite solder was produced first using LPS with short sintering periods (30 or 60 s at 160 degrees C) followed by ARB up to five passes, each pass imposing a strain of 50%. Mechanical response and electrical and thermal conductivities of the fabricated samples were evaluated. It was observed that processing through ARB homogenizes the distribution of Cu in an In matrix, disintegrates the agglomerates of Cu powders, and also significantly increases thermal and electrical conductivities, almost attaining theoretically predicted values, without significantly increasing the flow stress. Furthermore, the processing technique also allows the insertion of desired foreign species, such as reduced graphene oxide, in In-Cu for further enhancing a target property, such as electrical conductivity.

We report the localized charge carrier transport of two-phase composite Zn1-x Ni (x) O/NiO (0 a parts per thousand currency sign x a parts per thousand currency sign 1) using the temperature dependence of ac-resistivity rho (ac)(T) across the N,el temperature T (N) (= 523 K) of nickel oxide. Our results provide strong evidence to the variable range hopping of charge carriers between the localized states through a mechanism involving spin-dependent activation energies. The temperature variation of carrier hopping energy epsilon (h)(T) and nearest-neighbor exchange-coupling parameter J (ij)(T) evaluated from the small poleron model exhibits a well-defined anomaly across T (N). For all the composite systems, the average exchange-coupling parameter (J (ij))(AVG) nearly equals to 70 meV which is slightly greater than the 60-meV exciton binding energy of pure zinc oxide. The magnitudes of epsilon (h) (similar to 0.17 eV) and J (ij) (similar to 11 meV) of pure NiO synthesized under oxygen-rich conditions are consistent with the previously reported theoretical estimation based on Green's function analysis. A systematic correlation between the oxygen stoichiometry and, epsilon (h)(T) and J (ij)(T) is discussed.

The use of appropriate finite elements in different regions of a stressed solid can be expected to be economical in computing its stress response. This concept is exploited here in studying stresses near free edges in laminated coupons. The well known free edge problem of [0/90], symmetric laminate is considered to illustrate the application of the concept. The laminate is modelled as a combination of three distinct regions. Quasi-three-dimensional eight-noded quadrilateral isoparametric elements (Q3D8) are used at and near the free edge of the laminate and two-noded line elements (Q3D2) are used in the region away from the free edge. A transition element (Q3DT) provides a smooth inter-phase zone between the two regions. Significant reduction in the problem size and hence in the computational time and cost have been achieved at almost no loss of accuracy.

X-ray diffraction line profile analysis (XRDLPA) techniques have been applied to investigate the deformed microstructure of a recently developed boron modified two-phase titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V. The alloy was hot compressed at 750 degrees C up to 50% height reduction at two different strain rates (10(-3) S-1 and 1 S-1). Microstructural parameters like average domain size, average microstrain within the domain and dislocation density of the two phases were determined using X-ray diffraction line profile analysis. The results indicate an increase in the microstrain and dislocation density for the alpha-phase and decrease for the beta-phase in the case of boron modified alloys as compared to the normal material. Microstructural modifications viz, the grain refinement and the presence of hard, brittle TiB particles in the case of boron modified alloy are held responsible for the observed difference in the dislocation density. Two new line clipping algorithms, the opposite-corner algorithm and the perpendicular-distance algorithm, that are based on simple geometric observations are presented. These algorithms do not require computation of outcodes nor do they depend on the parametric representations of the lines. It is shown that the opposite-corner algorithm perform consistently better than an algorithm due to Nicholl, Lee, and Nicholl which is claimed to be better than the classic algorithm due to Cohen-Sutherland and the more recent Liang-Barsky algorithm. The pseudo-code of the opposite-corner algorithm is provided in the Appendix.

Results of Raman spectroscopic studies of (NH4)2ZnBr4 crystal in the spectral range from 20-250 cm-1 and over a range of temperature from 90K to 440K covering the low temperature ferroelectric and high temperature incommensurate phases are presented. The plots of the integrated areas and peak heights of the strong Raman lines versus temperature show anomalous behaviour near the two phase transitions.

The issue of dynamic spectrum scene analysis in any cognitive radio network becomes extremely complex when low probability of intercept, spread spectrum systems are present in environment. The detection and estimation become more complex if frequency hopping spread spectrum is adaptive in nature. In this paper, we propose two phase approach for detection and estimation of frequency hoping signals. Polyphase filter bank has been proposed as the architecture of choice for detection phase to efficiently detect the presence of frequency hopping signal. Based on the modeling of frequency hopping signal it can be shown that parametric methods of line spectral analysis are well suited for estimation of frequency hopping signals if the issues of order estimation and time localization are resolved. An algorithm using line spectra parameter estimation and wavelet based transient detection has been proposed which resolves above issues in computationally efficient manner suitable for implementation in cognitive radio. The simulations show promising results proving that adaptive frequency hopping signals can be detected and demodulated in a non cooperative context, even at a very low signal to noise ratio in real time.

Short-time analytical solutions of temperature and moving boundary in two-dimensional two-phase freezing due to a cold spot are presented in this paper. The melt occupies a semi-infinite region. Although the method of solution is valid for various other types of boundary conditions, the results in this paper are given only for the prescribed flux boundary conditions which could be space and time dependent. The freezing front propagations along the interior of the melt region exhibit well known behaviours but the propagations along the surface are of new type. The freezing front always depends on material parameters. Several interesting results can be obtained as particular cases of the general results.

Electrical resistance (R) measurements are reported for ternary mixtures of 3-methylpyridine, water and heavy water as a function of temperature (T) and heavy water content in total water. These mixtures exhibit a limited two-phase region marked by a loop size (ΔT) that goes to zero as the double critical point (DCP) is approached. The measurements scanned the ΔT range 1.010°C less-than-or-equals, slant ΔT less-than-or-equals, slant 77.5°C. The critical exponent (θ), which signifies the divergence of ∂R/∂T, doubles within our experimental uncertainties as the DCP is reached very closely.
