The synthesis and thermal analysis studies of several hydroxobridged homo and hetero trinuclear cobalt(III) complexes are reported. The complexes are of the type [M(H2O)(x) {(OH)(2)Co(en)(2)}(2)](SO4)(2). nH(2)O and [M(H2O)(x){(OH)(2)Co(NH3)(4)}(2)] (SO4)(2). nH(2)O where en denotes ethylenediamine and M =Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) with x=0 for Cu(II), and 2 for other metal ions, and n =3, 4 or 5. The TG and DTA studies of these compounds show that one or more intermediate compounds are formed in each case before the metal oxides are produced.

Metalorganic complexes of copper have been synthesized by modifying the ligand in the beta-diketonate class of compounds. Detailed thermal analysis of several beta-diketonate complexes of copper has been carried out to evaluate their suitability as precursors for chemical vapor deposition (CVD). A comparison of their relative volatilities has been made by determining their sublimation rates at different temperatures. Thermal analyses of these complexes reveal significant differences among their volatilities and decomposition patterns.

Semieonducting GaxTe~oo-x (17 -< x _< 25) glasses have been prepared by melt quenching method and thermal crystallization studies carried out using differential scanning calorimetry. On heating, virgin GaxTel0o-x glasses exhibit one glass transition and two crystallization reactions. The first crystallization reaction corresponds to the precipitation of hexagonal Te and the second one to the crystallization of the matrix into zinc blende Ga2Te3 phase. If GaxTeloo-x glasses are quenched to ambient temperature from Tcrl and reheated, they exhibit the phenomenon of double glass transition.

Non-stoichiometric substituted cerium vanadates, MxCe1-xVO4 (M = Li, Ca and Fe), were synthesized by solid-state reactions. The crystal structure was analyzed by powder X-ray diffraction and it exhibits a tetragonal zircon Structure, crystallizing in the space group I4(1)/amd with a = 7.3733(4) and c = 6.4909(4) angstrom and Z = 4. Particle sizes were in the range of 600-800 nm, as observed by scanning electron microscopy. The thermal analysis of the compounds showed phase stability up to 1100 degrees C. The UV diffuse reflectance spectra indicated that the compounds have band gaps in the range of 2.6-2.9 eV. The photocatalytic activity of these Compounds was investigated for the first time for the degradation of different dyes, and organics, the oxidation of cyclohexane and the hydroxylation of benzene. The degradation of dyes was modeled using the Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetics, while the oxidation of cyclohexane and hydroxylation of benzene were modeled using a free radical mechanism and a series reaction mechanism, respectively.

Investigations on the phase relations and dielectric properties of (1 -x)BaTiO3 + xNd2/3TiO 3 (BNT) ceramics sintered in air below 1650 K have been carried out. X-ray powder diffraction studies indicate apparent phase singularity for compositions with x < 0.3. Nd2Ti207 is detected at higher neodymium concentrations. The unit cell parameter changes continuously with neodymium content, and BaTiO3 is completely cubic at room temperature with x -- 0.0525, whereas electron diffraction studies indicate that the air-sintered BNT ceramics with x > 0.08 contain additional phases that are partly amorphous even to an electron beam. SEM observations reveal that BaTiO3 grains are mostly covered by a molten intergranular phase, and show the presence of randomly distributed Nd2Ti207 grains. Energy dispersive X-ray analysis shows the Ba-Nd-Ti ternary composition of the intergranular phase. Differential thermal analysis studies support the formation of a partial melt involving dissolution-precipitation of boundary layers of BaTiO3 grains. These complex phase relations are accounted for in terms of the phase instability of BaTiO3 with large cation-vacancy concentration as a result of heavy Nd 3+ substitution. The absence of structural intergrowth in (1 - x)BaTiO3 + xNd2/3TiO3 under oxidative conditions leads to a separation of phases wherein the new phases undergo melting and remain X-ray amorphous. BNT ceramics with 0.1 < x < 0.3 have ~eff >~ 104 with tan 6 < 0.1 and nearly flat temperature capacitance characteristics. The grain-size dependence of ee,, variations of ~eff and tan 6 with the measuring frequency, the non-ohmic resistivities, and the non-linear leakage currents at higher field-strengths which are accompanied by the decrease in eeff and rise in tan 3, are explained on the basis of an intergranular (internal boundary layer) dielectric characteristic of these ceramics.

A systematic investigation of the effects of antimony dopant on the electronic transport properties of amorphous (GeSe3.5)100−xSbx under high pressure (up to 120 kbar) has been carried out down to liquid-nitrogen temperature for the first time. Differential thermal analysis and x-ray diffraction methods were used for the characterization of freshly prepared and pressure-quenched materials which indicated the presence of structural phase transition in both GeSe3.5 and (GeSe3.5)100−xSbx around 105 kbar pressure. Electrical transport data revealed the strong compositional dependence of the electronic conduction process. A distinct kink in the conductivity temperature plot at pressures>15 kbar was observed in the Sb-doped compositions indicating the presence of different conduction processes. An attempt has been made to interpret the pressure-induced effect in the transport properties of these glasses considering the possible presence of both thermally activated conduction in the extended states and hopping process in the localized tail states. However, the interpretation of the transport data is not straightforward and the pressure dependence of the thermoelectric power will be needed to complete the picture. Vacuum pyrolysis of ammonium perchlorate (AP) and ammonium perchlorate/polystyrene (PS) propellant has been studied by differential thermal analysis (DTA) in order to observe the effect of transition metal oxides on sublimation. Sublimation and decomposition being competitive processes, their proportions depend on the pressure of the pyrolysis chamber. The enthalpies for complete decomposition and complete sublimation are available from the literature and by using these data together with DTA area measurements, the extents of sublimation and decomposition have been calculated for AP and the propellant system. The effect of the metal ions on the extent and rate of sublimation depends on their nature. For AP the extent of sublimation increases with a decrease in particle size. For the propellants the powder sublimes more readily than the bulk material, but in the presence of metal ions the bulk material sublimes more readily than the powder. To substantiate this finding, the effect of MnO2 on AP sublimation as a function of particle size was examined, and it was observed that the extent of sublimation decreases as the particle size decreases.

The influence of MnO2, CuO, and NiO on the thermal decomposition and explosivity of arylammonium perchlorates has been studied by differential thermal analysis (DTA) and explosive sensitivity measurements. The metal oxides considerably sensitize both decomposition and explosion and the sensitizing effect is in the order NiO < CuO < MnO2. The accelerated decomposition or explosion seems to occur via the formation of an intermediate, metal perchlorate arylamine complex. The experimental evidence for the mechanism put forward has been included.

Transparent glasses in the system 3BaO-3TiO2-B2O3 (BTBO) were fabricated via the conventional melt-quenching technique. The as-quenched samples were confirmed to be non-crystalline by differential thermal analysis (DTA). Thermal parameters were evaluated using non-isothermal DTA experiments. The Kauzmann temperature was found to be 759 K based on heating-rate-dependent glass transition and crystallization temperatures. A theoretical relation for the temperature-dependent viscosity is proposed for these glasses and glass-ceramics.

Rice husk ash (about 95% silica) with known physical and chemical characteristics has been reacted with lime and water. The setting process for a lime-excess and a lime-deficient mixture has been investigated. The product of the reaction has been shown to be a calcium silicate hydrate, C-S-H(I)+ by a combination of thermal analysis, XRD and electron microscopy. Formation of C-S-H(I) accounts for the strength of lime-rice husk ash cement.
