A detailed evaluation of size, shape and microstrains of BaTiO3 crystallites produced by hydrothermal crystallization at 90 – 180 °C and 0.1 – 1.2 MPa, from amorphous TiO2· xH2O (3 < × < 8) gel and aqueous Ba(OH)2 is presented, using X-ray line-broadening and TEM studies. Whereas the concentration of Ba(OH)2 and the acceptor impurities affect the crystallite shape, the stoichimetry with respect to Ba/Ti, donor as well as acceptor impurities, and the temperature of crystallization influence the microstrains. It is shown that strains in the crystallites are related to the point defects in the lattice. Compensation of the residually present hydroxyl ions in the oxygen sublattice by cation vacancies results in strains leading to metastable presence of the cubic phase at room temperature. Studies on the diffuse phase transition behaviour of these submicron powders show that the stable tetragonal phase is produced only on annealing at high temperatures where the mobility of cations vacancies are larger. Heat-treatment reduces anisotropy and strain in undoped samples, whereas annealing is less effective in doped materials. Comparison of the crystillite size by TEM showed better agreement with the Warren—Averbach method.

Heteronuclear multiple-quantum coherence relaxation rate are calculated for the individual transitions of the S spin in an AIS nuclear spin system assuming that the heteronucleus (S spin) has relaxation contributions from both intramolecular dipole-dipole and chemical shift anisotropy relaxation. The individual multiplet components of the heteronuclear zero- and double-quantum coherences are shown to have different transverse relaxation rates. The cross-correlation between the two relaxation mechanisms is shown to be the dominant cause of the calculated differential line broadening. Experimental data are presented using as an example a uniformly 15N labelled sample of human epidermal growth factor.

Cycloheximide-ribosome interactions from sensitive and resistant organisms were studied by proton magnetic resonance spectroscopic techniques. The two methyl resonances of cycloheximide upon interaction with ribosomes from Saccharomyces cerevisiae showed preferential broadening. Comparison of cycloheximide line broadening as effected by ribosomes from S. cerevisiae (sensitive) and Microsporum canis (resistant) revealed that less cycloheximide is bound to the M. canis ribosomes. From the decrease in line broadening observed with increasing temperature it may be concluded that cycloheximide-ribosome interaction is a fast exchange reaction. Tetracycline did not compete with cycloheximide for binding site(s) on the ribosomes of S. cerevisiae.

Nanostructured ceria-zirconia solid solutions (Ce1 − xZrxO2, X = 0 to 0.9) have been synthesized by a single step solution combustion process using cerous nitrate, zirconyl nitrate and oxalyl dihydrazide (ODH) / carbohydrazide (CH). The as-synthesized powders show extensive XRD line broadening and the crystallite sizes calculated from the XRD line broadening are in the nanometer range (6–11 nm). The combustion derived ceria zirconia solid solutions have high surface area in the range of 36–120 m2/g. Calcination of Ce1 −xZrxO2 at 1350 °C showed three distinct solid solution regions: single phase cubic (x ≤ 0.2), biphasic cubic-tetragonal (0.2 < x Image .8) and tetragonal (x > 0.8). When x ≥ 0.9, the metastable tetragonal phase formed transforms to monoclinic phase on cooling after calcination above 1100 °C. The homogeneity of Ce1 − xZrxO2 has been confirmed by EDAX analysis. The Temperature Programmed Reduction (TPR) measurement of Ce0.5Zr0.5O2 was carried out with H2 and the TPR profile showed two water formation peaks corresponding to the utilization of surface and bulk oxygen.

Optical and structural properties of reactive ion beam sputter deposited CeO2 films as a function of oxygen partial pressures (P-O2) and substrate temperatures (T-s) have been investigated. The films deposited at ambient temperature with P-O2 of 0.01 Pa have shown a refractive index of 2.36 which increased to 2.44 at 400 degrees C. Refractive index and extinction coefficient are sensitive up to a T-s of similar to 200 degrees C. Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) have been used to characterise the structural properties. A preferential orientation of (220) was observed up to a T-s of 200 degrees C and it changed to (200) at 400 degrees C: and above. Raman line broadening, peak shift and XRD broadening indicate the formation of nanocrystalline phase for the films deposited up to a substrate temperature of 300 degrees C. However, crystallinity of the films were better for T-s values above 300 degrees C. In general both optical and structural properties were unusual compared to the films deposited by conventional electron beam evaporation, but were similar in some aspects to those deposited by ion-assisted deposition. Apart from thermal effects, this behavior is also attributed to the bombardment of backscattered ions/neutrals on the growing film as well as the higher kinetic energy of the condensing species, together resulting in increased packing density. We have studied the temperature dependence of the photoemission spectra of La1-xSrxMnO3 (x=0.0, 0.2, and 0.4) and found that the spectral line shape dramatically changes in the entire valence-band region, particularly for x=0.2 and 0.4. By contrast, the spectra of La0.6Sr0.4CoO3 show no significant temperature dependence. From comparison between the temperature-and composition-(x) dependent spectral changes and the temperature-composition phase diagram of La1-xSrxMnO3, we suggest that the changes are related to the degree of hole localization on oxygen p orbitals, which is influenced by electron-lattice coupling and magnetic correlations.

A novel wet-chemical precipitation method is optimized for the synthesis of ZnS nanocrystals doped with Cu+ and halogen. The nanoparticles were stabilized by capping with polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP). XRD studies show the phase singularity of ZnS particles having zinc-blende (cubic) structure. TEM as well as XRD line broadening indicate that the average crystallite size of undoped samples is similar to2 nm. The effects of change in stoichiometry and doping with Cu+ and halogen on the photoluminescence properties of ZnS nanophosphors have been investigated. Sulfur vacancy (Vs) related emission with peak maximum at 434 nm has been dominant in undoped ZnS nanoparticles. Unlike in the case of microcrystalline ZnS phosphor, incorporation of halogens in nanoparticles did not result V-Zn related self-activated emission. However, emission characteristics of nanophosphors have been changed with Cu+ activation due to energy transfer from vacancy centers to dopant centers. The use of halogen as co-activator helps to increase the solubility of Cu+ ions in ZnS lattice and also enhances the donor-acceptor type emission efficiency. With increase in Cu+ doping, Cu-Blue centers (CuZn-Cui+), which were dominant at low Cu+ concentrations, has been transformed into Cu-Green (Cu-Zn(-)) centers and the later is found to be situated near the surface regions of nanoparticles. From these studies we have shown that, by controlling the defect chemistry and suitable doping, photoluminescence emission tunability over a wide wavelength range, i.e., from 434 to 514 nm, can be achieved in ZnS nanophosphors. We extend the recently proposed spectral integration based psychoacoustic model for sinusoidal distortions to the MDCT domain. The estimated masking threshold additionally depends on the sub-band spectral flatness measure of the signal which accounts for the non- sinusoidal distortion introduced by masking. The expressions for masking threshold are derived and the validity of the proposed model is established through perceptual transparency test of audio clips. Test results indicate that we do achieve transparent quality reconstruction with the new model. Performance of the model is compared with MPEG psychoacoustic models with respect to the estimated perceptual entropy (PE). The results show that the proposed model predicts a lower PE than other models.

The H-1 NMR spectroscopic discrimination of enantiomers in the solution state and the measurement of enantiomeric composition is most often hindered due to either very small chemical shift differences between the discriminated peaks or severe overlap of transitions from other chemically non-equivalent protons. In addition the use of chiral auxiliaries such as, crown ether and chiral lanthanide shift reagent may often cause enormous line broadening or give little degree of discrimination beyond the crown ether substrate ratio, hampering the discrimination. In circumventing such problems we are proposing the utilization of the difference in the additive values of all the chemical shifts of a scalar coupled spin system. The excitation and detection of appropriate highest quantum coherence yields the measurable difference in the frequencies between two transitions, one pertaining to each enantiomer in the maximum quantum dimension permitting their discrimination and the F-2 cross section at each of these frequencies yields an enantiopure spectrum. The advantage of the utility of the proposed method is demonstrated on several chiral compounds where the conventional one dimensional H-1 NMR spectra fail to differentiate the enantiomers.

Chiral auxiliaries are used for the NMR spectroscopic study of enantiomers. Often the presence of impurities, overlap of peaks, line broadening and the multiplicity pattern restrict the chiral analysis in the 1D H-1 NMR spectrum. The present study introduces a simple 2D H-1 NMR experiment to unravel the overlapped spectrum. The experiment separates the spectra of enantiomers, thereby allowing the unambiguous assignment of all the coupled peaks and the measurement of enantiomeric excess (ee) from a single experiment even in combinatorial mixtures.

The line spectral frequency (LSF) of a causal finite length sequence is a frequency at which the spectrum of the sequence annihilates or the magnitude spectrum has a spectral null. A causal finite-length sequencewith (L + 1) samples having exactly L-LSFs, is referred as an Annihilating (AH) sequence. Using some spectral properties of finite-length sequences, and some model parameters, we develop spectral decomposition structures, which are used to translate any finite-length sequence to an equivalent set of AH-sequences defined by LSFs and some complex constants. This alternate representation format of any finite-length sequence is referred as its LSF-Model. For a finite-length sequence, one can obtain multiple LSF-Models by varying the model parameters. The LSF-Model, in time domain can be used to synthesize any arbitrary causal finite-length sequence in terms of its characteristic AH-sequences. In the frequency domain, the LSF-Model can be used to obtain the spectral samples of the sequence as a linear combination of spectra of its characteristic AH-sequences. We also summarize the utility of the LSF-Model in practical discrete signal processing systems.

Using analysis-by-synthesis (AbS) approach, we develop a soft decision based switched vector quantization (VQ) method for high quality and low complexity coding of wideband speech line spectral frequency (LSF) parameters. For each switching region, a low complexity transform domain split VQ (TrSVQ) is designed. The overall rate-distortion (R/D) performance optimality of new switched quantizer is addressed in the Gaussian mixture model (GMM) based parametric framework. In the AbS approach, the reduction of quantization complexity is achieved through the use of nearest neighbor (NN) TrSVQs and splitting the transform domain vector into higher number of subvectors. Compared to the current LSF quantization methods, the new method is shown to provide competitive or better trade-off between R/D performance and complexity.
A Legendre spectral element model for sloshing and acoustic analysis in nearly incompressible fluids
Resumo:
A new spectral finite element formulation is presented for modeling the sloshing and the acoustic waves in nearly incompressible fluids. The formulation makes use of the Legendre polynomials in deriving the finite element interpolation shape functions in the Lagrangian frame of reference. The formulated element uses Gauss-Lobatto-Legendre quadrature scheme for integrating the volumetric stiffness and the mass matrices while the conventional Gauss-Legendre quadrature scheme is used on the rotational stiffness matrix to completely eliminate the zero energy modes, which are normally associated with the Lagrangian FE formulation. The numerical performance of the spectral element formulated here is examined by doing the inf-sup test oil a standard rectangular rigid tank partially filled with liquid The eigenvalues obtained from the formulated spectral element are compared with the conventional equally spaced node locations of the h-type Lagrangian finite element and the predicted results show that these spectral elements are more accurate and give superior convergence The efficiency and robustness of the formulated elements are demonstrated by solving few standard problems involving free vibration and dynamic response analysis with undistorted and distorted spectral elements. and the obtained results are compared with available results in the published literature (C) 2009 Elsevier Inc All rights reserved

The two-phase thermodynamic (2PT) model is used to determine the absolute entropy and energy of carbon dioxide over a wide range of conditions from molecular dynamics trajectories. The 2PT method determines the thermodynamic properties by applying the proper statistical mechanical partition function to the normal modes of a fluid. The vibrational density of state (DoS), obtained from the Fourier transform of the velocity autocorrelation function, converges quickly, allowing the free energy, entropy, and other thermodynamic properties to be determined from short 20-ps MD trajectories. The anharmonic effects in the vibrations are accounted for by the broadening of the normal modes into bands from sampling the velocities over the trajectory. The low frequency diffusive modes, which lead to finite DoS at zero frequency, are accounted for by considering the DoS as a superposition of gas-phase and solid-phase components (two phases). The analytical decomposition of the DoS allows for an evaluation of properties contributed by different types of molecular motions. We show that this 2PT analysis leads to accurate predictions of entropy and energy of CO2 over a wide range of conditions (from the triple point to the critical point of both the vapor and the liquid phases along the saturation line). This allows the equation of state of CO2 to be determined, which is limited only by the accuracy of the force field. We also validated that the 2PT entropy agrees with that determined from thermodynamic integration, but 2PT requires only a fraction of the time. A complication for CO2 is that its equilibrium configuration is linear, which would have only two rotational modes, but during the dynamics it is never exactly linear, so that there is a third mode from rotational about the axis. In this work, we show how to treat such linear molecules in the 2PT framework.
