Flower-like nickel nanocone structures are synthesized by a simple chemical reduction method using hydrazine hydrate as the reducing agent. The structure, morphology and magnetic properties of as synthesized products are studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and SQUID magnetometer. The morphology evolution is studied by varying the reaction temperature and concentration of nickel chloride keeping other conditions unchanged.

High-pressure magnetic susceptibility measurements have been carried out on Fe(dipy)2(NCS)2 and Fe(phen)2(NCS)2 in the pressure range 1–10 kbar and tempeature range 80–300 K in order to investigate the factors responsible for the spin-state transitions. The transitions change from first order to second or higher order upon application of pressure. The temperature variation of the susceptibility at different pressures has been analysed quantitatively within the framework of available models. It is shown that the relative magnitudes of the ΔG0 of high-spin and low-spin conversion and the ferromagnetic interaction between high-spin complexes determines the nature of the transition.

From X-ray diffraction studies it is generally believed that B-DNA has the structural parameters n = 10 and h = 3.4 Å. However, for the first time we report that polymorphism in the B-form can be observed in DNA fibres. This was achieved by the precise control of salt and humidity in fibres and by the application of the precession method of X-ray diffraction to DNA fibres. The significant result obtained is that n = 10 is not observed for crystalline fibre patterns. In fact, n = 10 and h = 3.4 Å are not found to occur simultaneously. Instead, a range of values, n = 9.6–10.0 and h = 3.35 Å–3.41 Å is observed.

Internal motions in a A2BX4 compound (tetramethylammonium tetrabromo cadmate) have been investigated using proton spin—lattice relaxation time (T1) and second moment (M2) measurements in the temperature range 77 to 400 K. T1 measurements at three Larmor frequencies (10, 20 and 30 MHz) show isotropic tumbling of the tetramethylammonium group, random reorientation of methyl groups and spin—rotation interaction, and the corresponding parameters have been computed. The cw spectrum is narrow throughout the temperature range and shows side bands at the lowest temperature. This observation, along with the free-induction-decay behavior at these temperatures, is interpreted as the onset of a coherent motion, e.g. methyl group quantum tunnelling.

The probable modes of binding for methyl-α-d-sophoroside, methyl-β-d-sophoroside, laminariboise and cellobiose to concanavalin A have been determined using theoretical methods. Methyl-d-sophorosides can bind to concanavalin A in two modes, i.e. by placing their reducing as well as non-reducing sugar units in the carbohydrate specific binding site, whereas laminaribiose and cellobiose can reach the binding site only with their non-reducing glucose units. However, the probability for methyl-α-d-sophoroside to bind to concanavalin A with its reducing sugar residue as the occupant of the binding site is much higher than it is with its non-reducing sugar residue as the occupant of the sugar binding site. A few of the probable conformers of methyl-β-d-sophoroside can bind to concanavalin A with either the reducing or non-reducing glucose unit. Higher energy conformers of cellobiose or laminaribiose can reach the binding site with their non-reducing residues alone. The relative differences in the binding affinities of these disaccharides are mainly due to the differences in the availability of proper conformers which can reach the binding site and to non-covalent interactions between the sugar and the protein. This study also suggests that though the sugar binding site of concanavalin A accommodates a single sugar residue, the residue outwards from the binding site also interacts with concanavalin A, indicating the existence of extended concanavalin A carbohydrate interactions.

The conformational preferences of hydrazinecarbothioamide (HCTA, H2NNHCSNH2) in its basic and N-protonated (PHCTA, H3NNNHCSNH2) forms have been studied by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy and by theoretical LCAO-MO methods (ab initio, CNDO/2 and EHT). The hindered rotation around the C---N bond has been investigated by a total line shape analysis for the thioamide protons and by the three MO methods. Changes in the molecular conformation and electronic structure on protonation are briefly discussed.

Gelonin inhibits protein synthesis by inactivating the eukaryotic 60 S ribosomal subunit by an unknown mechanism. The protein was purified in high yield by a new method using Cibacron blue F3GA-Sepharose. Chemical modification studies reveal that arginine residues are essential for biological activity.

The high temperature phase transformation of hydrazonium sulfate, N2H6SO4 has been studied using DSC. The enthalpy of phase transition is found to be 3.63 ± 0.1 kJ mole−1. The phase transition temperature is found to decrease with the increase of particle size. It appears that the strain energy and not surface energy, is responsible for the phase transformation. The molar volume of the salt increases during the transformation as found by the dilatometric experiment involving percentage of linear thermal expansion. On cooling, the transformation from the high temperature modification to orthorhombic form is incomplete and extends over a wide range of temperature.

The so-called “Scheme of Squares”, displaying an interconnectivity of heterogeneous electron transfer and homogeneous (e.g., proton transfer) reactions, is analysed. Explicit expressions for the various partial currents under potentiostatic conditions are given. The formalism is applicable to several electrode geometries and models (e.g., semi-infinite linear diffusion, rotating disk electrodes, spherical or cylindrical systems) and the analysis is exact. The steady-state (t→∞) expressions for the current are directly given in terms of constant matrices whereas the transients are obtained as Laplace transforms that need to be inverted by approximation of numerical methods. The methodology employs a systems approach which replaces a system of partial differential equations (governing the concentrations of the several electroactive species) by an equivalent set of difference equations obeyed by the various partial currents.

The optimal parameters in the use of nuclease S1 in DNA reassociation kinetics in the presence of formamide have been determined. The conditions are especially suitable for the study of DNA rich in mole percent GC. A 10-fold dilution of the reassociation samples leading to a decrease in both NaCl and formamide concentrations, consequently resulting in a lowering of Tm by only 1.5°C, and the S1 digestion at temperatures identical to the reassociation assay in order to retain the stability of the duplex, are two important aspects of this system. Under these conditions, the kinetics of reassociation followed the theoretically predicted pattern, while the earlier reported methods have shown lower values.

Hyperfine interaction parameters reveal differences in the nature of spin-state equilibria in the lighter and heavier rare-earth cobaltites; the crystal-field parameter is lower in the lighter cobaltites. Temperature variation of the quadrupolar coupling constant is also more marked in the lighter rare-earth cobaltites, with NdCoO3 showing evidence for a structural phase transition.
