Mixed-species bird flocks are attractive models for the investigation of geographical variation in animal communities, as they represent a subset of the avifauna in most forested regions of the world. Yet studies of the regional variation in flock size and the composition of flocks are few, due to the predominance of studies carried out at single study site. Here, we review nine studies of mixed-species flocks conducted at 16 sites along the Western Ghats in India and in Sri Lanka. We find that flock size varies as much within this region as it does globally, with observation time being a confounding variable. Flock composition, however, is predictably related to elevation. Flocks at high elevations (>1200 m) in the Western Ghats strongly resemble flocks at high elevations in the mountain ranges of Sri Lanka in their composition, especially at the family level. We compare these flocks to flocks of other regions and make recommendations on study methodology that can facilitate comparisons across studies.

We have determined relative levels of chloroplast leucine and tyrosine isoaccepting tRNAs and modified nucleotide contents from total tRNAs isolated from dark-grown, light-grown, N6-isopentenyladenine (i6A)-treated dark-grown and i6A-treated light-grown cucumber seedlings. Significant increases in the relative amounts of tRNA(Leu)2 and tRNA(Leu)3 were observed in the i6A-treated dark-grown seedlings compared to dark-grown, light-grown and i6A-treated light-grown seedlings. On the other hand, i6A-treated light-grown seedlings tRNA(Tyr)1 increased to 85% of total tRNAs(Tyr) from about 9% in light-grown seedlings and tRNA(Tyr)2 decreased to 15% compared with 91% in light-grown seedlings. Analysis of modified nucleotide of total tRNAs indicated that pT, pI, pm1A, pm5C, pGm, pm1G, pm2G and pm7G contents were significantly higher in the total tRNA of i6A-treated dark-grown seedlings than those from untreated dark-grown seedlings. Illumination of 8-day-old dark-grown seedlings for 12 h increased the contents of pT, pI, pGm and pm1G when compared to 8-day-old dark-grown seedlings with extended growth for 12 h in dark. On the contrary, i6A had no stimulatory effect in the contents of modified nucleotide in the light-grown seedlings.

Recent molecular studies on langurs of the Indian subcontinent suggest that the widely-distributed and morphologically variable Hanuman langurs (Semnopithecus entellus) are polyphyletic with respect to Nilgiri and urple-faced langurs. To further investigate this scenario, we have analyzed additional sequences of mitochondrial cytochrome b as well as nuclear protamine P1 genes from these species. The results confirm Hanuman langur polyphyly in the mitochondrial tree and the nuclear markers suggest that the Hanuman langurs share protamine P1 alleles with Nilgiri and purple-faced langurs. We recommend provisional splitting of the so-called Hanuman langurs into three species such that the taxonomy is consistent with their evolutionary relationships.

Transfer RNAs of Azospirillum lipoferum were separated by two- dimensional gel electrophoresis and identified by aminoacylation. Thirty-six tRNA spots were resolved by this technique and twenty-six tRNA species have been identified. There are five tRNAs for Leu, four for Val, three for Pro, two each for Arg, Ile, Lys and Tyr, and one each for Ala, Asp, His, Phe, Ser and Thr. The tRNA(Asn) (QUU) was purified and its nucleotide sequence was determined. The A. lipoferum tRNA(Asn) (QUU) is 92% similar to B. subtilis tRNA(Asn) gene and two hypermodified nucleosides, queuosine (Q) and N-(9-beta-D Ribofuranosylpurine-6-YL) carbamoyl)-threonine (t(6)A) are present in this tRNA.

Mixed-species flocks of foraging birds have been documented from terrestrial habitats all over the world and are thought to form for either improved feeding efficiency or better protection from predators. Two kinds of flock participants are recognized: those that join other species ('followers') and are therefore likely to be the recipients of the benefits of flock participation and those that are joined ('leaders'). Through comparative analyses, using a large sample of flocks from around the world, we show that (1) 'followers' tend to be smaller, more insectivorous, and feed in higher strata than matched species that participate in flocks to a lesser extent and (2) 'leaders' tend to be cooperative breeders more often than matched species that are not known to lead flocks. Furthermore, meta-analyses of published results from across the world showed that bird species in terrestrial mixed-species flocks increase foraging rates and reduce vigilance compared to when they are solitary or in conspecific groups. Moreover, the increase in foraging rates is seen only with flock followers and not flock leaders. These findings suggest a role for predation in the evolution of mixed-species flocking. Species that are vulnerable to predation follow species whose vigilance they can exploit. By doing so, they are able to reduce their own vigilance and forage at higher rates. We evaluated trained listener-based acoustic sampling as a reliable and non-invasive method for rapid assessment of ensiferan species diversity in tropical evergreen forests. This was done by evaluating the reliability of identification of species and numbers of calling individuals using psychoacoustic experiments in the laboratory and by comparing psychoacoustic sampling in the field with ambient noise recordings made at the same time. The reliability of correct species identification by the trained listener was 100% for 16 out of 20 species tested in the laboratory. The reliability of identifying the numbers of individuals correctly was 100% for 13 out of 20 species. The human listener performed slightly better than the instrument in detecting low frequency and broadband calls in the field, whereas the recorder detected high frequency calls with greater probability. To address the problem of pseudoreplication during spot sampling in the field, we monitored the movement of calling individuals using focal animal sampling. The average distance moved by calling individuals for 17 out of 20 species was less than 1.5 m in half an hour. We suggest that trained listener-based sampling is preferable for crickets and low frequency katydids, whereas broadband recorders are preferable for katydid species with high frequency calls for accurate estimation of ensiferan species richness and relative abundance in an area.

An Arthrobacter species (tentatively identified as A. citreus), isolated by the enrichment culture method with glycerol as the sole source of carbon, was studied with a view to elucidate its pathway of glycerol breakdown. Evidence has been obtained against the functioning of the phosphorylative pathway by the study of (1) oxygen uptake with phosphorylated intermediates, (2) uptake of inorganic phosphorus by intact resting cells, (3) action of inhibitors like sodium fluoride, sodium azide, sodium arsenite, sodium iodoacetate, and parachloromercurybenzoate on oxygen uptake with resting cell suspensions and cell-free extracts in some cases. Evidence presented for the functioning of a non-phosphorylative pathway includes studies on the oxidation of glycerol, D-glyceraldehyde, glycerate, glycolic aldehyde, glycolic acid, glyoxylic acid, and formic acid to carbon dioxide and water. Further, the possibility of glyoxylate metabolism through the tricarboxylic acid cycle by its formation of malate was shown. The significance of the above pathway is that it has pointed to an alternative route of carbohydrate metabolism and entry into the tricaboxylic acid cycle without the intervention of pyruvate or the condensing enzyme.

ALTHOUGH titanium is determined colorimetrically in aqueous sulphuric acid medium in presence of excess of hydrogen peroxide, the nature of the colour-forming species is not known definitely. Schwarz1 suggested that the colour was due to the peroxo-disulphato titanate anion [O 2Ti(SO4)2]2-. On the other hand, Jahr2 and later Gastinger3 considered that the colour of the compound was due to the peroxy titanyl cation [TiO2 aq.] 2+, and suggested the following equilibrium in solution: Schaeppi and Treadwell4 attributed the colour bo O2TiSO4 or [O2Ti(SO4)2]2-, whereas Babko and Volkova5 represented the coloured complex ion as [Ti(H 2O2)]4+. Mori, Shibata, Kyuno and Ito 6 regarded the coloured species as [TiO2 aq.]2+ or [Ti(OH)2 (H2O)(H2O2)] 2+, assuming the co-ordination number of titanium to be four. Thus, a variety of constitutions has been proposed to explain the colour-forming species of the titanium complex, based on the investigations carried out in dilute sulphuric acid medium, but the complex has not been isolated so far.

The nominal composition of YBa2Cu3O7 oxide suggests that 33% of the copper should be in the 3+ state. In structural studies3–5, Cu3+ and Cu2+ ions have been assigned specific sites based on their preferred coordinations, and many of the models of superconductivity also require the presence of Cu3+. Our studies however show that Cu is present only in the Cu1+ and Cu2+ states, the proportion of the former increasing with decreasing temperature. It appears that there is no clear experimental evidence for the presence of Cu3+ in YBa2Cu3O7.
