The laminar boundary layer over a stationary infinite disk induced by a rotating compressible fluid is considered. The free stream velocity has been taken as tangential and varies as a power of radius, i.e. v∞ ˜ r−n. The effect of the axial magnetic field and suction is also included in the analysis. An implicit finite difference scheme is employed to the governing similarity equations for numerical computations. Solutions are studied for various values of disk to fluid temperature ratio and for values of n between 1 and −1. In the absence of the magnetic field and suction, velocity profiles exhibit oscillations. It has been observed that for a hot disk in the presence of a magnetic field the boundary layer solutions decay algebraically instead of decaying exponentially. In the absence of the magnetic field and suction, the solution of the similarity equations exists only for a certain range of n.

This article describes successful incorporation of multiwalled boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) and various functionalized BNNTs by Lewis bases such as trioctylamine (TOA), tributylamine (TBA), and triphenylphosphine (TPP), etc., in organogels formed by triphenylenevinylene (TPV)-based low molecular weight gelator (LMWG) in toluene and consequent characterization of the resulting gel nanocomposites. Functionalized BNNTs were synthesized first, and the presence of tubular structures with high aspect ratio and increased diameter compared to the starting BNNTs was confirmed by SEM. TEM, and Raman spectroscopy. The micrographs of composites of I and BNNTs showed evidence of wrapping of the gelator molecules on to the BNNT surface presumably brought about by pi-pi stacking and van der Waals interactions, This leads to the formation of densely packed and directionally aligned fibrous networks. Such ``reinforced'' aggregation of the gelator molecules in presence of doped BNNTs led to an increase in the sot-to-gel transition temperature and the solidification temperature of the gel nanocomposites as revealed from differential scanning calorimetry. Rheological investigations of the gel nanocomposites indicate that the flow properties of the resulting materials become resistant to applied stress upon incorporation of even a very low wt % of BNNTs. Finally, the increase in thermal conductivity of the nanocomposite compared to the gelator alone was observed for the temperature range of 0-60 degrees C which may make these composites potentially useful in various applications depending on the choice and the amount of BNNT loading in the composite.

The present study deals with the in vitro and in vivo effects of methyl isocyanate (MIC) on rat brain mitochondrial function. Addition of MIC to tightly coupled brain mitochondria in vitro resulted in a mild stimulation of state 4 respiration, abolition of respiratory control, decrease in ADP/0 ratio, and inhibition of state 3 oxidation. The oxidation of NAD+-linked substrates (glutamate + malate) was more sensitive (fourfold) to the inhibitory action of MIC than succinate while cytochrome oxidase was unaffected. Administration of MIC subcutaneously at a lethal dose affected respiration only with glutamate + malate as the substrate (site I) and caused a 20% decrease in state 3 oxidation leading to a significant decrease in respiratory control index while state 4 respiration and ADP/O ratio remained unaffected. As both the malondialdehyde and iron contents of brain mitochondria were not altered, it may be inferred that the observed in vivo inhibition of state 3 oxidation is induced by MIC through systemic stagnant hypoxia leading to ischemia of brain, which further contributes to the cerebral hypoxia.

It is well known that fatigue in concrete causes excessive deformations and cracking leading to structural failures. Due to quasi-brittle nature of concrete and formation of a fracture process zone, the rate of fatigue crack growth depends on a number of parameters, such as, the tensile strength, fracture toughness, loading ratio and most importantly the structural size. In this work, an analytical model is proposed for estimating the fatigue crack growth in concrete by using the concepts of dimensional analysis and including the above parameters. Knowing the governed and the governing parameters of the physical problem and by using the concepts of self-similarity, a relationship is obtained between different parameters involved. It is shown that the proposed fatigue law is able to capture the size effect in plain concrete and agrees well with different experimental results. Through a sensitivity analysis, it is shown that the structural size plays a dominant role followed by loading ratio and the initial crack length in fatigue crack propagation. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. The paper presents the importance of the Nocturnal Boundary Layer in driving the diurnal variability of the atmospheric CO2 mixing ratio and the carbon isotope ratio at ground level from an urban station in India. Our observations are the first of their kind from this region. The atmospheric CO2 mixing ratio and the carbon isotopic ratio were measured for both the morning (05:30-07:30 IST) and afternoon time (16:00-18:00 IST) air samples at 5 m above ground level in Bangalore city, Karnataka State (12 degrees 58' N, 77 degrees 38' E, masl = 920 m) for a 10 day period during the winter of 2008. We observed a change of similar to 7% the in CO2 mixing ratio between the morning and afternoon time air samples. A stable isotope analysis of CO2 from morning samples showed a depletion in the carbon isotope ratio by similar to 2 parts per thousand compared to the afternoon samples. Along with the ground-based measurement of air samples, data of radiosonde measurements were also obtained from the Indian Meteorological Department to identify the vertical atmospheric structure at different time in a day. We proposed the presence or absence of the NBL as a controlling factor for the observed variability in the mixing ratio as well as its isotopic composition. Here we used the Keeling model approach to find out the carbon isotope ratio for the local sources. The local sources have further been characterized as anthropogenic and biological respiration (in %) using a two-component mixing model. We also used a vertical mixing model based on the concept of the mixing of isotopically depleted (carbon isotope) ``polluted air'' (PA) with isotopically enriched ``free atmospheric air'' (FA) above. Using this modeling approach, the contribution of FA at ground level is being estimated for both the morning and afternoon time air samples.

Previous work has shown that irrespective of the route of exposure methyl isocyanate (MIC) caused acute lactic acidosis in rats (Jeevaratnam et al., Arch. Environ. Contam. Toxicol. 19, 314319, 1990) and the hypoxia was of stagnant type due to tissue hypoperfusion resulting from hypovolemic hypotension in rabbits administered MIC subcutaneously (Jeevarathinam et al., Toxicology 51, 223240, 1988). The present study was designed to investigate whether MIC could induce histotoxic hypoxia through its effects on mitochondrial respiration. Male Wistar rats were used for liver mitochondrial and submitochondrial particle (SMP) preparation. Addition of MIC to tightly coupled mitochondria in vitro resulted in stimulation of state 4 respiration, abolition of respiratory control, decrease in ADP/O ratio, and inhibition of state 3 oxidation. The oxidation of NAD+-linked substrates (glutamate + malate) was more sensitive (fiveto sixfold) to the inhibitory action of MIC than succinate while cytochrome oxidase remained unaffected. MIC induced twofold delay in the onset of anerobiosis, and cytochrome b reduction in SMP with NADH in vitro confirms inhibition of electron transport at complex I region. MIC also stimulated the ATPase activity in tightly coupled mitochondria while lipid peroxidation remained unaffected. As its hydrolysis products, methylamine and N,N?-dimethylurea failed to elicit any change in vitro; these effects reveal that MIC per se acts as an inhibitor of electron transport and a weak uncoupler. Administration of MIC sc at lethal dose caused a similar change only with NAD+-linked substrates, reflecting impairment of mitochondrial respiration at complex I region and thereby induction of histotoxic hypoxia in vivo.

The effect of various milling parameters such as, milling intensity, ball:powder weight ratio and number of balls on the glass forming ability of an elemental blend of composition Ti50Ni50 has been studied by mechanical alloying. In order to understand the results, all the milling parameters have been converted into two energy parameters, namely, impact energy of the ball and the total energy of milling. In a milling map of these two parameters, the conditions for amorphous phase formation have been isolated. A similar exercise has been carried out for Ti50Cu50 as a function of milling time at two milling intensities. The results indicate that a minimum impact energy of the ball and a minimum total energy are essential for amorphization by mechanical alloying.

Two free-ranging packs of dholes (Asiatic wild dog, Cuon alpinus) were monitored for a period of 6 yr (Sep. 1990-Sep. 1996) in the Mudumalai sanctuary, southern India. Demographic data on age structure, litter-size, sex ratio and age and sex specific dispersal were collected. Behavioural data on social interactions and reproductive behaviour among pack members were obtained to determine the frequencies of dominant and subordinate behaviours shown by malt: and female pack members and a measure of each male's reproductive access to females. Behaviours displayed by pack members at dens were recorded to determine whether any age- or sex-specific role specialization existed during pup care. Tenures for dominant males and females within the pack were calculated to ascertain the rate of breeding vacancies occurring within packs. Approximate levels of genetic relatedness within packs were determined by studying pedigrees. In most years one study pack had a male-biased adult sex ratio. This was caused by almost twofold higher dispersal of adult females over adult males. A considerable variance existed in the percentage of sub-adults dispersing from the two packs. Differences existed in the frequencies of dominant and subordinate behaviours shown by males. For males, dominance ranks and ranks based on submissive behaviours were not correlated with frequencies of reproductive behaviours. Subordinate males also displayed reproductive behaviours. In packs, dominant males had lower tenures than dominant females indicating that among males breeding vacancies arose more quickly. The litter size was found to be negatively correlated with the age of the breeding female. There were no significant differences across individuals of varying age or sex classes in the display of pup care behaviours. Significant differences did exist among individual adults. Genetic relatedness among packs tended to vary temporally as a consequence of possible mating by subordinate animals and immigration of new males into the pack. In conclusion, it appears that males delay dispersal and cooperate within their natal packs because of the variety of reproductive strategies they could pursue within. A combination of ecological constraints and the difficulties of achieving breeding status within non-natal packs may make early dispersal and independent breeding less beneficial.

This paper addresses the behaviour of compacted expansive soils under swell-shrink cycles. Laboratory cyclic swell-shrink tests were conducted on compacted specimens of two expansive soils at surcharge pressures of 6.25, 50.00, and 100.00 kPa. The void ratio and water content of the specimens at several intermediate stages during swelling until the end of swelling and during shrinkage until the end of shrinkage were determined to trace the water content versus void ratio paths with an increasing number of swell-shrink cycles. The test results showed that the swell-shrink path was reversible once the soil reached an equilibrium stage where the vertical deformations during swelling and shrinkage were the same. This usually occurred after about four swell-shrink cycles. The swelling and shrinkage path of each specimen subjected to full swelling - full shrinkage cycles showed an S-shaped curve (two curvilinear portions and a linear portion). However, the swelling and shrinkage path occurred as a part of the S-shaped curve, when the specimen was subjected to full swelling - partial shrinkage cycles. More than 80% of the total volumetric change and more than 50% of the total vertical deformation occurred in the central linear portion of the S-shaped curve. The volumetric change was essentially parallel to the saturation line within a degree of saturation range of 50-80% for the equilibrium cycle. The primary value of the swell-shrink path is to provide information regarding the void ratio change that would occur for a given change in water content for any possible swell-shrink pattern. It is suggested that these swell-shrink paths can be established with a limited number of tests in the laboratory.

In the trishanku (triA(-)) mutant of the social amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum, aggregates are smaller than usual and the spore mass is located mid-way up the stalk, not at the apex. We have monitored aggregate territory size, spore allocation and fruiting body morphology in chimaeric groups of (quasi-wild-type) Ax2 and triA(-) cells. Developmental canalisation breaks down in chimaeras and leads to an increase in phenotypic variation. A minority of triA(-) cells causes largely Ax2 aggregation streams to break up; the effect is not due to the counting factor. Most chimaeric fruiting bodies resemble those of Ax2 or triA(-). Others are double-deckers with a single stalk and two spore masses, one each at the terminus and midway along the stalk. The relative number of spores belonging to the two genotypes depends both on the mixing ratio and on the fruiting body morphology. In double-deckers formed from 1:1 chimaeras, the upper spore mass has more Ax2 spores, and the lower spore mass more triA(-) spores, than expected. Thus, the traits under study depend partly on the cells' own genotype and partly on the phenotypes, and so genotypes, of other cells: they are both autonomous and non-autonomous. These findings strengthen the parallels between multicellular development and behaviour in social groups. Besides that, they reinforce the point that a trait can be associated with a genotype only in a specified context.

Estimation of creep and shrinkage are critical in order to compute loss of prestress with time in order to compute leak tightness and assess safety margins available in containment structures of nuclear power plants. Short-term creep and shrinkage experiments have been conducted using in-house test facilities developed specifically for the present research program on 35 and 45 MPa normal concrete and 25 MPa heavy density concrete. The extensive experimental program for creep, has cylinders subject to sustained levels of load typically for several days duration (till negligible strain increase with time is observed in the creep specimen), to provide the total creep strain versus time curves for the two normal density concrete grades and one heavy density concrete grade at different load levels, different ages at loading, and at different relative humidity’s. Shrinkage studies on prism specimen for concrete of the same mix grades are also being studied. In the first instance, creep and shrinkage prediction models reported in the literature has been used to predict the creep and shrinkage levels in subsequent experimental data with acceptable accuracy. While macro-scale short experiments and analytical model development to estimate time dependent deformation under sustained loads over long term, accounting for the composite rheology through the influence of parameters such as the characteristic strength, age of concrete at loading, relative humidity, temperature, mix proportion (cement: fine aggregate: coarse aggregate: water) and volume to surface ratio and the associated uncertainties in these variables form one part of the study, it is widely believed that strength, early age rheology, creep and shrinkage are affected by the material properties at the nano-scale that are not well established. In order to understand and improve cement and concrete properties, investigation of the nanostructure of the composite and how it relates to the local mechanical properties is being undertaken. While results of creep and shrinkage obtained at macro-scale and their predictions through rheological modeling are satisfactory, the nano and micro indenting experimental and analytical studies are presently underway. Computational mechanics based models for creep and shrinkage in concrete must necessarily account for numerous parameters that impact their short and long term response. A Kelvin type model with several elements representing the influence of various factors that impact the behaviour is under development. The immediate short term deformation (elastic response), effects of relative humidity and temperature, volume to surface ratio, water cement ratio and aggregate cement ratio, load levels and age of concrete at loading are parameters accounted for in this model. Inputs to this model, such as the pore structure and mechanical properties at micro/nano scale have been taken from scanning electron microscopy and micro/nano-indenting of the sample specimen.

GaN films were grown on c-plane sapphire by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy (PAMBE). The effect of N/Ga flux ratio on structural, morphological, and optical properties was studied. The dislocation density found to increase with increasing the N/Ga ratio. The surface morphology of the films as seen by scanning electron microscopy shows pits on the surface and found that the pit density on the surface increases with N/Ga ratio. The room temperature photoluminescence study reveals the shift in band-edge emission toward the lower energy with increase in N/Ga ratio. This is believed to arise from the reduction in compressive stress in the films as is evidenced by room temperature Raman study. The transport studied on the Pt/GaN Schottky diodes showed a significant increase in leakage current with an increase in N/Ga ratio and was found to be caused by the increase in pit density as well as increase in dislocation density in the GaN films. Fly ashes are used to improve the properties of expansive soils. The paper brings out the effect of two different fly ashes containig different lime contents on shrinkage and swelling behaviour of expansive Indian Black cotton soil. Since the specific gravities of the fly ashes are considerably different,Void ratio at shrinkage limit and % of swelling are used to describe the shrinkage and swell behaviour of soils. Both fly ashes increase the shrinkage void ratio and decrease the % swell of the soil. While high lime fly ash is more effective in increasing the shrinkage void ratio, low lime flyash is more effective in reducing the swelling. Lime content which causes floculation of soil particle, is responsible for the differences.

This paper presents an experimental study on damage assessment of reinforced concrete (RC) beams subjected to incremental cyclic loading. During testing acoustic emissions (AEs) were recorded. The analysis of the AE released was carried out by using parameters relaxation ratio, load ratio and calm ratio. Digital image correlation (DIC) technique and tracking with available MATLAB program were used to measure the displacement and surface strains in concrete. Earlier researchers classified the damage in RC beams using Kaiser effect, crack mouth opening displacement and proposed a standard. In general (or in practical situations), multiple cracks occur in reinforced concrete beams. In the present study damage assessment in RC beams was studied according to different limit states specified by the code of practice IS-456:2000 and AE technique. Based on the two ratios namely load ratio and calm ratio and when the deflection reached approximately 85% of the maximum allowable deflection it was observed that the RC beams were heavily damaged. The combination of AE and DIC techniques has the potential to provide the state of damage in RC structures.

The thermoacoustic prime mover is part of an interesting class of prime movers that can be used to generate clean energy and to drive cryogenic refrigeration systems. A thermoacoustic prime mover has been built based on the linear thermoacoustic model, which consumes thermal energy and produces acoustic energy. The objective of this article is to design a thermoacoustic prime mover that can be used as a drive for a thermoacoustic refrigerator. It is found that stack plate length and its distance from the closed end have a significant effect on the thermal efficiency of the prime mover. For different stack center positions, there is an optimum length of stack plate that has a significant effect on the performance of the thermoacoustic prime mover in terms of temperature gradient, frequency, and pressure amplitude. In this study, the experiments have been done on the thermoacoustic prime mover by varying stack position and its length with constant blockage ratio and resonator length. The results obtained from the experiments have been compared to the theoretical results acquired from DeltaEc Software.
