Vapor-liquid equilibrium data for the system n-heptane-n-butanol have been reported. The thermodynamic consistency of the data was tested with Chao's modified Redlich-Kister equation and Tao's method.

An electron energy loss spectroscopic study of the formic acid dimer has shown bands centred around 7.2, 8.5, 9.8, and 11.1 eV, of which the first and the third bands are assigned to n- rc* transitions and the other two to n-n* transitions; similar transitions are found in the acetic acid dimer.

The kinetics of the vapor phase oxidation of p-xylene over ferric molybdate catalyst were studied in an isothermal, differential, tubular flow reactor in the temperature range of 360 to 420° C. The major product obtained was p-tolualdehyde with small amounts of maleic anhydride and p-toluic acid. No terephthalic acid or CO2 were observed. The reaction rate data collected fit the redox model given by Equation 1. The values of activation energies Ex, Eo and frequency factors Ax, Ao obtained are 72, 63 kJ/mol and 0.64, 2.89 m3/kg catalyst s respectively. The reaction mechanism was established by studying the oxidation of p-tolualdehyde, toluic and terephthalic acids. It is concluded that the reaction follows a parallel-consecutive scheme.

We report a detailed investigation of resistance noise in single layer graphene films on Si/SiO2 substrates obtained by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on copper foils. We find that noise in these systems to be rather large, and when expressed in the form of phenomenological Hooge equation, it corresponds to Hooge parameter as large as 0.1-0.5. We also find the variation in the noise magnitude with the gate voltage (or carrier density) and temperature to be surprisingly weak, which is also unlike the behavior of noise in other forms of graphene, in particular those from exfoliation. The equilibrium pressure of calcium corresponding to the reduction reaction 6CaO (s) + 2Al (l) half-arrow-right-over-half-arrow-left 3CaO.Al2O3 (s) + 3Ca (g) has been measured by Knudsen effusion - mass loss analysis in the temperature range 1190 - 1500 K. The measured vapour pressure can be expressed as a function of temperature by the relation: log p(Ca) (Pa) = -10,670/T + 9.267 The calcium generated is partially absorbed by aluminium to form an alloy. The equilibrium composition of the alloy at 1373 K was found to be 22 mol% Ca - 78 mol% Al. The measured vapour pressure is in good agreement with that computed from thermodynamic data.

Vapor-liquid equilibrium data have been measured for the binary systems methyl ethyl ketone-p-xylene and chlorobenzene-p-xylene, at 685 mmHg pressure. The activity coefficients have been evaluated taking Into consideration the vapor-phase nonideallty. The f-x-y data have been subjected to a thermodynamic consistency test and the activity coefficients have been correlated by the Wilson equation.

The use of binary fluid systems in thermally driven vapour absorption and mechanically driven vapour compression refrigeration and heatpump cycles has provided an impetus for obtaining experimental date on caloric properties of such fluid mixtures. However, direct measurements of these properties are somewhat scarce in spite of the calorimetric techniques described in the literature being quite adequate. Most of the design data are derived through calculations using theoretical models and vapour-liquid equilibrium data. This article addresses the choice of working fluids and the current status on the data availability vis-a-vis engineering applications. Particular emphasis is on organic working fluid pairs.

MnO/C composite coatings were grown by the metalorganic chemical vapor deposition process on ceramic alumina in argon ambient. Characterization by various techniques confirms that these coatings are homogeneous composites comprising nanometer-sized MnO particles embedded in a matrix of nanometer-sized graphite. Components of the MnO/C composite coating crystalline disordered, but are electrically quite conductive. Resistance vs. temperature measurements show that coating resistance increases exponentially from a few hundred ohms at room temperature to a few megaohms at 30 K. Logarithmic plots of reduced activation energy vs. temperature show that the coating material undergoes a metal-insulator transition. The reduced activation energy exponent for the film under zero magnetic field was 2.1, which is unusually high, implying that conduction is suppressed at much faster rate than the Mott or the Efros-Shklovskii hopping mechanism. Magnetoconductance us. magnetic field plots obtained at various temperatures show a high magnetoconductance (similar to 28.8%) at 100 K, which is unusually large for a disordered system, wherein magnetoresistance is attributed typically to weak localization. A plausible explanation for the unusual behavior observed in the carbonaceous disordered composite material is proposed. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
