The membrane channel-forming polypeptide, Leu(1)-zervamicin, Ac-Leu-Ile-Gln-Iva-Ile(5)-Thr-Aib-Leu-Aib-Hyp(10) -Gln-Aib-Hyp-Aib-Pro(15)-Phol (Aib: alpha-aminoisobutyric acid; Iva: isovaline; Hyp: 4-hydroxyproline; Phol: phenylalininol) has been analyzed by x-ray diffraction in a third crystal form. Although the bent helix is quite similar to the conformations found in crystals A and B, the amount of bending is more severe with a bending angle approximate to 47 degrees, The water channel formed by the convex polar faces of neighboring helices is larger at the mouth than in crystals A and B, and the water sites have become disordered. The channel is interrupted in the middle by a hydrogen bond between the OH of Hyp(10) and the NH2 of the Gln(11) of a neighboring molecule. The side chain of Gln(11) is wrapped around the helix backbone in an unusual fashion in order that it can augment the polar side of the helix. In the present crystal C there appears to be an additional conformation for the Gln(11) side chain (with approximate to 20% occupancy) that opens the channel for possible ion passage. Structure parameters for C85H140N18O22.xH(2)O.C2H5OH are space group P2(1)2(1)2(1), a = 10.337 (2) Angstrom, b = 28.387 (7) Angstrom, c = 39.864 (11) Angstrom, Z = 4, agreement factor R = 12.99% for 3250 data observed > 3 sigma(F), resolution = 1.2 Angstrom. A reaction of N-bromosuccinimide with the heme groups of hemoglobin has been studied spectrophotometrically. The reaction brings about the disappearance of characteristic absorption peaks of hemoglobin and is accompanied by the release of inorganic iron from the heme groups. Urea is obligatory for the reaction to take place at pH 4.0, while it can occur in the absence of urea at pH 7.0. The spectrum of hemoglobin which does not show any peak in the Soret region at pH 4.0 is “normalized” in the presence of urea or sucrose at the same pH. The effect of “normalization” in 8 M urea is apparent over the pH range 3.0–4.5. From the obligatory requirement of urea and sucrose for “normalization” of spectrum and the dependence of the release of inorganic iron on the concentration of urea, it is suggested that heme groups are “buried” within the globin at pH 4.0 and not dissociated from globin as supposed before.

The (overall trans) addition of hydrogen chloride to cyclohex-1- enecarbonitrile in anhydrous alcoholic media proceeds to give cis-2-chlorocyclohexanecarboxylate (together with some cis-2- chlorocyclohexanecarboxamide): no corresponding products with the trans-configuration are detectable. In anhydrous ether the addition proceeds to give a single isomer, presumably cis-, of 2-chlorocyclohexanecarbonitrile, indicating that the configuration of the products may not be equilibrium-controlled in alcoholic media. An examination of the steric factors indicates that the transition state for protonation of the presumed intermediate, 2-chlorocyclohexylidenemethylideneimine, leading to cis-product is favoured if interaction between the lateral π-orbital of the C-N double bond and the lone-pairs on the chlorine atom at the 2-position is large. Consideration of interactions in the transition states meets Zimmerman's criticism that invoking A1, 3 interaction existing in ground states to explain product configuration takes insufficient account of the Curtin-Hammett principle.

By observing mergers of compact objects, future gravity wave experiments would measure the luminosity distance to a large number of sources to a high precision but not their redshifts. Given the directional sensitivity of an experiment, a fraction of such sources (gold plated) can be identified optically as single objects in the direction of the source. We show that if an approximate distance-redshift relation is known then it is possible to statistically resolve those sources that have multiple galaxies in the beam. We study the feasibility of using gold plated sources to iteratively resolve the unresolved sources, obtain the self-calibrated best possible distance-redshift relation and provide an analytical expression for the accuracy achievable. We derive the lower limit on the total number of sources that is needed to achieve this accuracy through self-calibration. We show that this limit depends exponentially on the beam width and give estimates for various experimental parameters representative of future gravitational wave experiments DECIGO and BBO.

Investigations of different superconducting (S)/ferromagnetic (F) heterostructures grown by pulsed laser deposition reveal that the activation energy (U) for the vortex motion in a high T-c superconductor is reduced remarkably by the presence of F layers. The U exhibits a logarithmic dependence on the applied magnetic field in the S/F bilayers suggesting the existence of decoupled two-dimensional (2D) pancake vortices. This result is discussed in terms of the reduction in the effective S layer thickness and the weakening of the S coherence length due to the presence of F layers. In addition, the U and the superconducting T-c in YBa2Cu3O7-delta/La0.5Sr0.5CoO3 bilayers are observed to be much lower than in the YBa2Cu3O7-delta/La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 ones. This in turn suggests that the degree of spin polarization of the F layer might not play a crucial role for the suppression of superconductivity due to a spin polarized induced pair-breaking effect in S/F bilayers.

We applied our previous theory of high temperature superconductivity to Bi and Tl compounds in this paper. The theory involves the role of electron pairs in the spin singlet of species Xequal-or-greater, slanted (Bi3+ (6S2), Tl(6S2) etc.) and their virtual excited state X0 (Bi5+ (6s0), Tl3+ (6s0), etc.) in the pairing interaction of quasiholes. Bi and Tl species provide additional channels of kind (Xequal-or-greater, slanted left angle bracket X0) owing to the charge fluctuations. We treated the two states of these species like a two-level Bose system. We used the pseudospin formalism to calculate the expression for the critical temperature in this paper. We also calculated numerically the value of Tc for Bi and Tl compounds and found a good agreement between theory and experiment.

Recent reanalysis of the data of the Eötvös experiment suggested the existence of a new force. We show that a negative energy massive scalar field minimally coupled to gravity in a background Schwarzschild metric naturally leads to a potential which can explain the small anomalous effect in the Eötvös experiment.

Based on in-situ Mossbauer and X-ray diffraction studies, it is shown that in the Fe/TiO2 catalyst, the anatase-rutile transformation of the TiO2 support is facilitated by the Fe2+ ions formed during the reduction. The transformation occurs at lower temperatures in Th/TiO2 and Cu/TiO2 compared to pure TiO2. In general, the transformation of anatase to rutile seems to occur at or below the temperature (approximately 770 K) at which strong-metal-support-interaction manifests itself.

Sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of Percoll purified Leydig cell proteins from 20- and 120-day-old rats revealed a significant decrease in a low molecular weight peptide in the adult rats. Administration of human chorionic gonadotropin to immature rats resulted in a decrease in the low molecular weight peptide along with increase in testosterone production. Modulation of the peptide by human chorionic gonadotropin could be confirmed by Western blotting. The presence of a similar peptide could be detected by Western blotting in testes of immature mouse, hamster, guinea pig but not in adrenal, placenta and corpus luteum. Administration of testosterone propionate which is known to inhibit the pituitary luteinizing hormone levels in adult rats resulted in an increase in the low molecular weight peptide, as checked by Western blotting. It is suggested that this peptide may have a role in regulation of acquisition of responsiveness to luteinizing hormone by immature rat Leydig cells.

The phenomenon of neurotransmitter-stimulated incorporation of32Pi into phosphatidic acid and inositol phosphatides (neurotransmitter effect) in developing brain was studied in vitro as a possible measure of synaptogenesis. While the neurotransmitter effect was not observed with brain homogenates, highly consistent and significant effects were noted with brain tissue suspensions obtained by passing the tissue through nylon bolting cloth. The magnitude of the effect decreased with the increase in mesh number. Maximum stimulations obtained with the 33 mesh adult brain cortex preparations (mean±S.E.M. of6experiments) were203 ± 8%, 316 ± 11 % and150 ± 8% with 10−3 M acetylcholine (ACh) + 10−3 M eserine; 10−2 M norepinephrine (NE) and 10−2 M serotonin (5-HT), respectively. Experiments with developing rat brain at 7, 14 and 21 days of age showed that the neurotransmitter effects due to ACh, NE and 5-HT increase progressively in different regions of the brain but that there are marked regional differences. It is suggested that the neurotransmitter effect is a valid biochemical correlate of synaptogenesis. In rats undernourished from birth t0 21 days of age, by increasing the litter size, the neurotransmitter effect with ACh, NE or 5-HT was not altered in the cortex but was significantly reduced in the brain stem. In cerebellum the effects due to ACh and NE were significantly altered, while that with 5-HT was unaffected. It is concluded that cholinergic, adrenergic and serotonergic synapses are relatively unaffected in the cortex but are significantly affected in the brain stem by undernutrition. In the cerebellum of undernourished rats the adrenergic and cholinergic, but not serotonergic systems, are altered.

In order to generate normal Penrose tilings by inflation/deflation, decisions have to be made regarding the matching of the rhombuses/tilings with their neighbours. We show here that this decision-making problem can be avoided by adopting a deflation/inflation procedure which uses the decorated rhombuses with identical boundaries. The procedure enables both kinds of inflated rhombuses to match in any orientation along their edges. The tilings so generated are quasiperiodic. These structures appear to have a close relationship with the growth mechanism of quasicrystals.

Ab initio computations Predict a minimum for a carbon-carbon quadruple bond in C2. While the computed C-C separation, 1.128 angstrom, fits Pauling's bond order-bond length relationship well, this result is an artifact of the restricted Hartree Fock theory.
