We use the Density Matrix Renormalization Group and the Abelian bosonization method to study the effect of density on quantum phases of one-dimensional extended Bose-Hubbard model. We predict the existence of supersolid phase and also other quantum phases for this system. We have analyzed the role of extended range interaction parameters on solitonic phase near half-filling. We discuss the effects of dimerization in nearest neighbor hopping and interaction as well as next nearest neighbor interaction on the plateau phase at half-filling.

Expressions for various second-order derivatives of surface tension with respect to composition at infinite dilution in terms of the interaction parameters of the surface and those of the bulk phases of dilute ternary melts have been presented. A method of deducing the parameters, which consists of repeated differentiation of Butler's equations with subsequent application of the appropriate boundary conditions, has been developed. The present investigation calculates the surface tension and adsorption functions of the Fe-S-O melts at 1873 and 1923 K using the modified form of Butler's equations and the derived values for the surface interaction parameters of the system. The calculated values are found to be in good agreement with those of the experimental data of the system. The present analysis indicates that the energetics of the surface phase are considerably different from those of the bulk phase. The present research investigates a critical compositional range beyond which the surface tension increases with temperature. The observed increase in adsorption of sulfur with consequent desorption of oxygen as a function of temperature above the critical compositional range has been ascribed to the increase of activity ratios of oxygen to sulfur in the surface relative to those in the bulk phase of the system.

The present investigation calculates the surface tension and adsorption functions of the Fe-S, Fe-N, and Fe-S-N melts at 1823 K using the modified form of Butler's equations and the derived values of the surface interaction parameters of the systems. The calculated values are found to be in good agreement with those of the experimental data of the systems. The present analysis indicates similar adsorption behavior of sulfur for the Fe-S and Fe-S-N systems at 1823 K. Although a linear adsorption behavior is observed in the Fe-N system, an inverse relationship in the adsorption behavior exists between sulur and nitrogen in the Fe-S-N system.

A thermodynamic model was developed for modeling the solubilities of fatty acids in supercritical carbon dioxide. The model combines the Peng-Robinson equation of state (EOS) with the two parameter van der Waal's mixing rules. The model is applied to predict the solubilities of various fatty acids. The two adjustable interaction parameters in the model are found to vary linearly with the chain length of the fatty acids. Thus this model can be used to predict the solubilities of various fatty acids in supercritical carbon dioxide. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

An experimental characterization of three-phase equilibria in Fe--V--O and Fe--Nb--O systems at 1823, 1873 and 1923K has been carried out using a solid state cell and by analysis of quenched samples. The oxygen potentials corresponding to these three-phase equilibria were monitored by a solid state cell incorporating Y sub 2 O sub 3 doped ThO sub 2 with Cr + Cr sub 2 O sub 3 as reference electrode. Similar measurements were carried out for Fe--Nb--O alloys in equilibrium with a mixture of FeNb sub 2 O sub 6 and NbO sub 2 . These measurements permit evaluation of interaction parameters (e exp V sub O = --6590/T + 2.892 and e exp Nb sub O = --4066/T + 1.502) and activity coefficients of vanadiun and niobium in dilute solution (ln gamma exp O sub V = --35 320/T + 12.68 and ln gamma sub Nb exp O = --12 386/T + 4.34) in liquid iron. The results obtained in this study resolve a number of discrepancies in thermodynamic data reported in the literature, especially regarding the activity coefficients of V and Nb and the stability ranges for V sub 2 O sub 3 and VO sub 1+x . 18 ref.--AA

The concentration and chemical potential of oxygen in liquid Fe--Mn alloys equilibrated with the spinel solution, (Fe, Mn)Al sub 2+2x O sub 4+3x , and alpha -Al sub 2 O sub 3 have been determined at 1873K as a function of manganese concentration. The composition of the spinel phase has been determined using electron probe microanalysis. The results are compared with data reported in the literature. The deoxidation equilibrium has been computed using data on free energy of solution of oxygen in liquid iron, free energies of formation of hercynite and galaxite, and interaction parameters reported in the literature. The activity--composition relationship in spinel solution was derived from a cation distribution model. The model is in excellent agreement with the experimental data on oxygen concentration and potential and the composition of the spinel phase. 23 ref.--AA

The oxygen content of liquid Ni-Mn alloy equilibrated with spinel solid solution, (Ni,Mn)O. (1 +x)A12O3, and α-Al2O3 has been measured by suction sampling and inert gas fusion analysis. The corresponding oxygen potential of the three-phase system has been determined with a solid state cell incorporating (Y2O3)ThO2 as the solid electrolyte and Cr + Cr2O3 as the reference electrode. The equilibrium composition of the spinel phase formed at the interface of the alloy and alumina crucible was obtained using EPMA. The experimental data are compared with a thermodynamic model based on the free energies of formation of end-member spinels, free energy of solution of oxygen in liquid nickel, interaction parameters, and the activities in liquid Ni-Mn alloy and spinel solid solution. Mixing properties of the spinel solid solution are derived from a cation distribution model. The computational results agree with the experimental data on oxygen concentration, potential, and composition of the spinel phase.

We studied structural and magnetic properties of a series of insulating double perovskite compounds, La2-xSrxCuRuO6 (0 <= x <= 1), representing doping via A-site substitution. The end members La2CuRuO6 and LaSrCuRuO6 form in monoclinic structure while the intermediate Sr doped compounds stabilize in triclinic structure. The Cu and Ru ions sit on alternate B sites of the perovskite lattice with similar to 15% antisite defects in the undoped sample while the Sr-doped samples show a tendency to higher ordering at B sites. The undoped (x = 0) compound shows a ferrimagnetic-like behavior at low temperatures. In surprising contrast to the usual expectation of an enhancement of ferromagnetic interaction on doping, an antiferromagnetic-like ground state is realized for all doped samples (x > 0). Heat capacity measurements indicate the absence of any long-range magnetic order in any of these compounds. The magnetic relaxation and memory effects observed in all compounds suggest glassy dynamical properties associated with magnetic disorder and frustration. We show that the observed magnetic properties are dominated by the competition between the nearest-neighbor Ru-O-Cu 180 degrees superexchange interaction and the next-nearest-neighbor Ru-O-O-Ru 90 degrees superexchange interaction as well as by the formation of antisite defects with interchanged Cu and Ru positions. Our calculated exchange interaction parameters from first principles calculations for x = 0 and x = 1 support this interpretation.

A detailed diffusion study was carried out on Cu(Ga) and Cu(Si) solid solutions in order to assess the role of different factors in the behaviour of the diffusing components. The faster diffusing species in the two systems, interdiffusion, intrinsic and impurity diffusion coefficients, are determined to facilitate the discussion. It was found that Cu was more mobile in the Cu-Si system, whereas Ga was the faster diffusing species in the Cu-Ga system. In both systems, the interdiffusion coefficients increased with increasing amount of solute (e.g. Si or Ga) in the matrix (Cu). Impurity diffusion coefficients for Si and Ga in Cu, found out by extrapolating interdiffusion coefficient data to zero composition of the solute, were both higher than the Cu tracer diffusion coefficient. These observed trends in diffusion behaviour could be rationalized by considering: (i) formation energies and concentration of vacancies, (ii) elastic moduli (indicating bond strengths) of the elements and (iii) the interaction parameters and the related thermodynamic factors. In summary, we have shown here that all the factors introduced in this paper should be considered simultaneously to understand interdiffusion in solid solutions. Otherwise, some of the aspects may look unusual or even impossible to explain.

We study the equilibrium properties of an Ising model on a disordered random network where the disorder can be quenched or annealed. The network consists of fourfold coordinated sites connected via variable length one-dimensional chains. Our emphasis is on nonuniversal properties and we consider the transition temperature and other equilibrium thermodynamic properties, including those associated with one-dimensional fluctuations arising from the chains. We use analytic methods in the annealed case, and a Monte Carlo simulation for the quenched disorder. Our objective is to study the difference between quenched and annealed results with a broad random distribution of interaction parameters. The former represents a situation where the time scale associated with the randomness is very long and the corresponding degrees of freedom can be viewed as frozen, while the annealed case models the situation where this is not so. We find that the transition temperature and the entropy associated with one-dimensional fluctuations are always higher for quenched disorder than in the annealed case. These differences increase with the strength of the disorder up to a saturating value. We discuss our results in connection to physical systems where a broad distribution of interaction strengths is present.

Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) has been used to obtain kinetic and nucleation parameters for polymer crystallization under a non-isothermal mode of operation. The available isothermal nucleation growth-rate equation has been modified for non-isothermal kinetic analysis. The values of the nucleation constant (K g ) and surface free energies (sgr, sgr e ) have been obtained for i-polybutene-1, i-polypropylene, poly(L-lactic acid), and polyoxymethylene and are compared with those obtained from isothermal kinetic analysis; a good agreement in both is seen.

The polymer-amorphous carbon composites show a negative magnetoconductance which varies as B-2 at low fields which changes to B-1/2 at sufficiently high fields. The magnetoconductance gives the evidence of electron-electron interaction in composites whose conductivity follows thermal fluctuation induced tunneling and falls in the critical regime. A polymer containing electron-rich aromatic donors (1,5-dialkoxynaphthalene (DAN)) was coerced into a folded state by an external folding agent that contained an electron-deficient aromatic acceptor (pyromellitic diimide (PM)) unit. The donor-containing polymer was designed to carry a tertiary amine moiety in the linking segment, which served as an H-bonding site for reinforcing the interaction with the acceptor containing folding agent that also bore a carboxylic acid group. The H-bonding interaction of the carboxylic acid and the tertiary amine brings the PDI unit between two adjacent DAN units along the polymer backbone to induce charge-transfer (C-T) interactions, and this in turn causes the polymer chain to form a pleated structure. Evidence for the formation of such a pleated structure was obtained from NMR titration studies and also by monitoring the C-T band in their UV-visible spectra. By varying the length of the segment that links the PDI acceptor to the carboxylic acid group, we showed that the most effective folding agent was the one that had a single carbon spacer, as evident from the highest value of the association constant. Control experiments with propionic acid clearly demonstrated the importance of the additional C-T interactions for venerating the folded structures. Further, solution viscosity measurements in the presence of varying amounts of the folding agent revealed a gradual stiffening of the chain in the case of the PDI carrying carboxylic acid, whereas no such affect was seen in the case of simple propionic acid. These observations were supported by D FT calculations of the interactions of a dimeric model of the polymer with the various folding agents; here too the stability of the complex was seen to be highest in the case of the single carbon spacer.

Langevin dynamics simulation studies have been employed to calculate the temperature dependent free energy surface and folding characteristics of a 500 monomer long linear alkane (polyethylene) chain with a realistic interaction potential. Both equilibrium and temperature quench simulation studies have been carried out. Using the shape anisotropy parameter (S) of the folded molecule as the order parameter, we find a weakly first order phase transition between the high-temperature molten globule and low-temperature rodlike crystalline states separated by a small barrier of the order of k(B)T. Near the melting temperature (580 K), we observe an intriguing intermittent fluctuation with pronounced ``1/f noise characteristics'' between these two states with large difference in shape and structure. We have also studied the possibilities of different pathways of folding to states much below the melting point. At 300 K starting from the all-trans linear configuration, the chain folds stepwise into a very regular fourfold crystallite with very high shape anisotropy. Whereas, when quenched from a high temperature (900 K) random coil regime, we identify a two step transition from the random coiled state to a molten globulelike state and, further, to a anisotropic rodlike state. The trajectory reveals an interesting coupling between the two order parameters, namely, radius of gyration (R-g) and the shape anisotropy parameter (S). The rodlike final state of the quench trajectory is characterized by lower shape anisotropy parameter and significantly larger number of gauche defects as compared to the final state obtained through equilibrium simulation starting from all-trans linear chain. The quench study shows indication of a nucleationlike pathway from the molten globule to the rodlike state involving an underlying rugged energy landscape. The thermodynamics of monodisperse solutions of polymers in the neighborhood of the phase separation temperature is studied by means of Wilson’s recursion relation approach, starting from an effective ϕ4 Hamiltonian derived from a continuum model of a many‐chain system in poor solvents. Details of the chain statistics are contained in the coefficients of the field variables ϕ, so that the parameter space of the Hamiltonian includes the temperature, coupling constant, molecular weight, and excluded volume interaction. The recursion relations are solved under a series of simplifying assumptions, providing the scaling forms of the relevant parameters, which are then used to determine the scaling form of the free energy. The free energy, in turn, is used to calculate the other singular thermodynamic properties of the solution. These are characteristically power laws in the reduced temperature and molecular weight, with the temperature exponents being the same as those of the 3d Ising model. The molecular weight exponents are unique to polymer solutions, and the calculated values compare well with the available experimental data.
