Two topical subjects related with the effect of magnetic field on electrical conduction and the metal-insulator transition are discussed. The first topic is an electronic phase transition in graphite, which is interpreted as a manifestation of a nestingtype instability inherent to a one-dimensional narrow Landau sub-band. The second topic is spin-dependent tranport in III-V based diluted magnetic semiconductors; in particular, a large negative magnetoresistance observed in the vicinity of metal-nonmetal transition.

We have studied the metal-insulator transition at integer fillings in a triply degenerate Hubbard model using the Lanczos method. The critical Coulomb interaction strength U-c, is found to depend strongly on the band filling, with U-c similar to root 3 W (W is the bandwidth) at half filling for this case with threefold degeneracy. We discuss the implications of our results on metal-insulator transitions in strongly correlated systems in general, and on the unusual electronic ground state of the alkali-metal-doped fullerenes, in particular. We present the synthesis and properties of iodine incorporated amorphous carbon films. Optical studies depict a decrease in band gap with variation in iodine content and pyrolysis temperature. Tuning of the metal-insulator transition is achieved by varying the pyrolysis temperature and iodine concentration. Appreciable decrease in magnetoresistance is observed with iodine incorporation, but negative magnetoresistance typical behavior of metallic samples is not witnessed.

We have investigated the multiferroic and glassy behaviour of metal-organic framework (MOF) material (CH3)(2)NH2Co(CHOO)(3). The compound has perovskite-like architecture in which the metal-formate forms a framework. The organic cation (CH3)(2)NH2+ occupies the cavities in the formate framework in the framework via N-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds. At room temperature, the organic cation is disordered and occupies three crystallographically equivalent positions. Upon cooling, the organic cation is ordered which leads to a structural phase transition at 155 K. The structural phase transition is associated with a para-ferroelectric phase transition and is revealed by dielectric and pyroelectric measurements. Further, a PE hysteresis loop below 155 K confirms the ferroelectric behaviour of the material. Analysis of dielectric data reveal large frequency dispersion in the values of dielectric constant and tan delta which signifies the presence of glassy dielectric behaviour. The material displays a antiferromagnetic ordering below 15 K which is attributed to the super-exchange interaction between Co2+ ions mediated via formate linkers. Interestingly, another magnetic transition is also found around 11 K. The peak of the transition shifts to lower temperature with increasing frequency, suggesting glassy magnetism in the sample. The composition-controlled metal-insulator transition in the perovskite systems LaNi1-xMxO3 (M = Cr, Mn, Fe, and Co) has been investigated by transport measurements over the temperature range 12-300 K. These systems, which have critical electron densities (nc) in the range (1-2) -1020 electrons cm-3, exhibit sharp metal-insulator transitions at the base temperature. The corresponding minimum metallic conductivity (Ï-min), separating the localized and itinerant electronic regimes, is of the order of 102 ohm-1 cm-1. Particular attention is paid to the idea of Ï-min scaling with nc, and our present results are compared with earlier studies of the metal-insulator transition in low (e.g., Ge:Sb) and high (e.g., metal-ammonia, supercritical Hg) electron-density systems. A link is established between the transport and magnetic properties of the title systems at the metal-insulator transition.

An investigation of the phase transitions at high pressures in the alums mentioned in the title has been carried out using EPR of the Cr3+ ion (at the trivalent metal ion site). It is observed that at ambient as well as at high pressures there is a change of slope in the linear variations of the zero field splitting with temperature and that the low temperature phase is characterised by a large number of lines in the EPR spectra. The transition temperature shows a large positive shift with pressure, for both the alums. All these facts are explained in terms of our model of the origin of the trigonal field at the trivalent metal ion site as well as the details of the motion of NH4+ ion.

LaMnO3+? samples with Mn4+ content up to 50% have been prepared by different methods. The structure of LaMnO3+? changes from orthorhombic to cubic (via rhombohedral) with increase in the Mn4+ content. LaMnO3+? samples containing greater than 20% Mn4+ are ferromagnetic and show resistivity maxima at a temperature Tt which is close to the ferromagnetic Curie temperature. The resistivity maximum is due to the occurrence of a metal-insulator transition. In samples heated to the same temperature, the value of Tt increases with % Mn4+. For a given sample, Tt increases with the temperature of heat treatment due to the increase in particle size. The onset of ferromagnetism in LaMnO3+? accompanied by an insulator-metal transition is similar to that found in La1-xCaxMnO3 and La1-xSrxCoO3.

Bremsstrahlung isochromat spectroscopy (BIS) along with ultraviolet and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS and XPS) has been employed to investigate the electron states of Pd and Ag deposited on amorphous graphite at different coverages. The metal core level binding energies increase with decreasing cluster size while the UPS valence bands show a decrease in the 4d states at E(F) accompanied by a shift in the intensity maximum to higher binding energies. BIS measurements show the emergence of new states closer to E(F) with increase in the cluster size. It is pointed out that the observed spectral shifts cannot be accounted for by final-state effects alone and that initial-state effects have a significant role. It therefore appears that a decrease in cluster size is accompanied by a metal-insulator transition.

Nanopowders of TiO(2) has been prepared using a microwave irradiation-assisted route, starting from a metalorganic precursor, bis(ethyl-3-oxo-butanoato)oxotitanium (IV), [TiO(etob)(2)](2). Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) was used as a capping agent. The as-prepared amorphous powders crystallize into anatase phase, when calcined. At higher calcination temperature, the rutile phase is observed to form in increasing quantities as the calcination temperature is raised. The structural and physicochemical properties were measured using XRD, FT-IR, SEM, TEM and thermal analyses. The mechanisms of formation of nano-TiO(2) from the metal-organic precursor and the irreversible phase transformation of nano TiO(2) from anatase to rutile structure at higher temperatures have been discussed. It is suggested that a unique step of initiation of transformation takes place in Ti(1/2)O layers in anatase which propagates. This mechanism rationalizes several key observations associated with the anatase rutile transformation.

We report the electrical conductivity between 2 and 300 K for LaNi1-xFexO3 across the composition-controlled metal-insulator (m-i) transition. Using a method first suggested by Mobius, we identify the critical concentration x(c) to be 0.3 for the m-i transition. The negative temperature coefficient of resistivity observed at low temperatures in the metallic phase follows a temperature dependence characteristic of disorder effects. The semiconducting compositions (x greater than or equal to 0.3) do not show a simple activation energy but exhibit variable-range hopping at high temperatures confirming that the m-i transition in this system is driven by increasing disorder effects.

Temperature-dependent Raman spectroscopic studies were carried out on Na2Cd(SO4)(2) from room temperature to 600 degrees C. We observe two transitions at around 280 and 565 degrees C. These transitions are driven by the change in the SO4 ion. On the basis of these studies, one can explain the changes in the conductivity data observed around 280 and 565 degrees C. At 280 degrees C, spontaneous tilting of the SO4 ion leads to restriction of Na+ mobility. Above 565 degrees C, the SO4 ion starts to rotate freely, leading to increased mobility of Na+ ion in the channel.

We have carried out temperature- and pressure-dependent Raman and x-ray measurements on single crystals of Tb2Ti2O7. We attribute the observed anomalous temperature dependence of phonons to phonon-phonon anharmonic interactions. The quasiharmonic and anharmonic contributions to the temperature-dependent changes in phonon frequencies are estimated quantitatively using mode Grüneisen parameters derived from pressure-dependent Raman experiments and bulk modulus from high-pressure x-ray measurements. Further, our Raman and x-ray data suggest a subtle structural deformation of the pyrochlore lattice at ~9 GPa. We discuss possible implications of our results on the spin-liquid behavior of Tb2Ti2O7.

1H NMR at high hydrostatic pressures and compressibility studies show that the protonic conductor (NH4)4Fe(CN)6·1.5H2O undergoes a phase transition around 0.45 GPa. The transition is characterized by a large hysteresis. From the NMR studies, an activation volume of 6% is obtained below the phase transition, indicating the dominance of Frenkel defects.
