Tungsten incorporated diamond like carbon (W-DLC) nanocomposite thin films with variable fractions of tungsten were deposited by using reactive biased target ion beam deposition technique. The influence of tungsten incorporation on the microstructure, surface topography, mechanical and tribological properties of the DLC were studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy. Atomic force microscope (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), nano-indentation and nano-scratch tests. The amount of W in films gets increases with increasing target bias voltage and most of the incorporated W reacts with carbon to form WC nanoclusters. Using TEM and FFT pattern, it was found that spherical shaped WC nanoclusters were uniformly dispersed in the DLC matrix and attains hexagonal (W2C) crystalline structure at higher W concentration. On the other hand, the incorporation of tungsten led to increase the formation of C-sp(2) hybridized bonding in DLC network and which is reflected in the hardness and elastic modulus of W-DLC films. Moreover, W-DLC films show very low friction coefficient and increased adhesion to the substrate than the DLC film, which could be closely related to its unique nanostructure of the W incorporated thin films. Ethylene gas is burnt and the soot generated is sampled thermophoretically at different heights along the flame axis starting from a region close to the root of the flame. The morphology and crystallinity of the particle are recorded using high resolution transmission electron microscopes. The hardness of a single particle is measured using a nanoindenter. The frictional resistance and material removal of a particle are measured using an atomic force microscope. The particles present in the mid-flame region are found to have a crystalline shell. The ones at the flame root are found to be highly disordered and the ones at the flame tip and above have randomly distributed pockets of short range order. The physical state of a particle is found to relate, but not very strongly, with the mechanical and tribological properties of the particles.

This paper deals with the quasi-static and dynamic mechanical analysis of montmorillonite filled polypropylene composites. Nanocomposites were prepared by blending montmorillonite (nanoclay) varying from 3 to 9% by weight with polypropylene. The dynamic mechanical properties such as storage modulus, loss modulus and mechanical loss factor of PP and nano-composites were investigated by varying temperature and frequencies. Results showed better mechanical and thermomechanical properties at higher concentration of nanoclay. Regression-based models through design of experiments (DOE) were developed to find the storage modulus and compared with theoretical models and DOE-based models.

Aiming to develop high mechanical strength and toughness by tuning ultrafine lamellar spacing of magnetic eutectic alloys, we report the mechanical and magnetic properties of the binary eutectic alloys Co90.5Zr9.5 and Fe90.2Zr9.8, as well as the pseudo-binary eutectic alloys Co82.4Fe8Zr9.6, Co78Fe12.4Zr9.6 and Co49.2Fe49.2Zr9.6 developed by suction-casting. The lower lamellar spacing around 100 nm of the eutectics Co49.2Fe49.2Zr9.6 yields a high hardness of 713(+/- 20) VHN. Magnetic measurements reveal high magnetic moment of 1.92 mu B (at 5 K) and 1.82 mu B (at 300 K) per formula unit for this composition. The magnetization vs. applied field data at 5 K show a directional preference to some extent and therefore smaller non-collinear magnetization behavior compared to Co11Zr2 reported in the literature due to exchange frustration and transverse spin freezing owing to the presence of smaller Zr content. The decay of magnetization as a function of temperature along the easy axis of magnetization of all the eutectic compositions can be described fairly well by the spin wave excitation equation Delta M/M(0) = BT3/2 + CT5/2. Hexagonal Cu-2 Te has been synthesised by mechanical alloying from elemental powders. The milling time required for the synthesis is longer than that reported for other tellurides. The mechanical grinding of the bulk Cu2Te obtained by the melting route does not change the structure. Prolonged milling as well as grinding beyond 40 h lead to a decrease in grain size to nanometer level. The cold compaction of milled or ground powders exhibit much smaller Seebeck coefficient (thermopower). However, cold compaction of samples milled for longer time (>150 h) lead to the thermopower values close to that of the bulk indicating significant improvement of rheological properties at room temperature for powders milled for long times.

The electroslag refining technique is one of the modern tools which is capable of imparting superior mechanical and chemical properties to metals and alloys. Refining usually results in the elimination of a number of casting or solidification defects, such as shrinkage porosity, gas porosity, pipe, micro- and macro segregation. Remelting also imparts a directional grain structure apart from refining the size of the inclusions, grains and precipitates. This technique has over the years been used widely and successfully to improve the mechanical and chemical properties of steels and alloy steels which are used in the nuclear, missile, aerospace and marine industries for certain critical applications. But the application of ESR to aluminium and its alloys is only recent. This paper investigates the response of an aluminium alloy (corresponding to the Indian Specification IS: 7670) to ESR. Based on theoretical considerations and microstructural evidence it elucidates how ESR of aluminium alloys differs from that of ferrous alloys. The improvement achieved in mechanical properties of the alloy is correlated with the microstructure.

In this paper, we report a significant improvement in mechanical and oxidation properties of near eutectic Nb-Si alloys by the addition of aluminum (Al) and control of microstructural length scale. A comparative study of two alloys Nb-18.79at%Si and Nb-12.3at%Si-9at%Al were carried out. The processing for microstructure refinements were carried out by vacuum suction casting in water cooled thick copper mould. It is shown that addition of Al suppresses Nb3Si phase and promotes beta Nb5Si3 phase under nonequilibrium solidification condition. The microstructural length scale and in particular eutectic spacing reduces significantly to 50-100 nm in suction cast ternary alloy. A detailed TEM study shows the presence of delta-Nb11Si4 phase in Nb matrix. The hardness of Nb solid solution can be increased as a consequence to a level observed in Nb3Si intermetallic due to the well oriented precipitates. Compression test yields the ultimate strength of 1.8 +/- 0.1 GPa and engineering strain of 2.3 +/- 0.03%. In comparison, the binary Nb-18.79 at% Si alloy possesses an ultimate strength of 1.35 +/- 0.1 GPa and strain of 0.2 +/- 0.01% when processed under identical conditions. The latter exhibits coarser microstructural length scale (300-400 nm) and a brittle behavior. The indentation fracture toughness of Al containing suction cast alloy shows a value of 20.2 +/- 0.5 MPa root m which represents a major improvement over bulk Nb-Si eutectic alloy. The detailed thermal studies confirm a multifold improvement in oxidation resistance up to 1000 degrees C. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A series of dual-phase (DP) steels containing finely dispersed martensite with different volume fractions of martensite (V-m) were produced by intermediate quenching of a boron- and vanadium-containing microalloyed steel. The volume fraction of martensite was varied from 0.3 to 0.8 by changing the intercritical annealing temperature. The tensile and impact properties of these steels were studied and compared to those of step-quenched steels, which showed banded microstructures. The experimental results show that DP steels with finely dispersed microstructures have excellent mechanical properties, including high impact toughness values, with an optimum in properties obtained at similar to 0.55 V-m. A further increase in V-m was found to decrease the yield and tensile strengths as well as the impact properties. It was shown that models developed on the basis of a rule of mixtures are inadequate in capturing the tensile properties of DP steels with V-m > 0.55. Jaoul-Crussard analyses of the work-hardening behavior of the high-martensite volume fraction DP steels show three distinct stages of plastic deformation.

We study the elasticity, topological defects, and hydrodynamics of the recently discovered incommensurate smectic (AIC) phase, characterized by two collinear mass density waves of incommensurate spatial frequency. The low-energy long-wavelength excitations of the system can be described by a displacement field u(x) and a phason field w(x) associated, respectively, with collective and relative motion of the two constituent density waves. We formulate the elastic free energy in terms of these two variables and find that when w=0, its functional dependence on u is identical to that of a conventional smectic liquid crystal, while when u=0, its functional dependence on w is the same as that for the angle variable in a slightly anisotropic XY model. An arbitrariness in the definition of u and w allows a choice that eliminates all relevant couplings between them in the long-wavelength elastic energy. The topological defects of the system are dislocations with nonzero u and w components. We introduce a two-dimensional Burgers lattice for these dislocations, and compute the interaction between them. This has two parts: one arising from the u field that is short ranged and identical to the interaction between dislocations in an ordinary smectic liquid crystal, and one arising from the w field that is long ranged and identical to the logarithmic interaction between vortices in an XY model. The hydrodynamic modes of the AIC include first- and second-sound modes whose direction-dependent velocities are identical to those in ordinary smectics. The sound attenuations have a different direction dependence, however. The breakdown of hydrodynamics found in conventional smectic liquid crystals, with three of the five viscosities diverging as 1/? at small frequencies ?, occurs in these systems as well and is identical in all its details. In addition, there is a diffusive phason mode, not found in ordinary smectic liquid crystals, that leads to anomalously slow mechanical response analogous to that predicted in quasicrystals, but on a far more experimentally accessible time scale.

Large-area PVDF thin films have been prepared and characterized for quasi-static and high frequency dynamic strain sensing applications. These films are prepared using hot press method and the piezoelectric phase (beta-phase) has been achieved by thermo-mechanical treatment and poling under DC field. The fabricated films have been characterized for quasi-static strain sensing and the linear strain-voltage relationship obtained is promising. In order to evaluate the ultrasonic sensing properties, a PZT wafer has been used to launch Lamb waves in a metal beam on which the PVDF film sensor is bonded at a distance. The voltage signals obtained from the PVDF films have been compared with another PZT wafer sensor placed on the opposite surface of the beam as a reference signal. Due to higher stiffness and higher thickness of the PZT wafer sensors, certain resonance patterns significantly degrade the sensor sensitivity curves. Whereas, the present results show that the large-area PVDF sensors can be superior with the signal amplitude comparable to that of PZT sensors and with no resonance-induced effect, which is due to low mechanical impedance, smaller thickness and larger area of the PVDF film. Moreover, the developed PVDF sensors are able to capture both A(0) and S-0 modes of Lamb wave, whereas the PZT sensors captures only A(0) mode in the same scale of voltage output. This shows promises in using large-area PVDF films with various surface patterns on structures for distributed sensing and structural health monitoring under quasi-static, vibration and ultrasonic situations. Diglycidyl ether–bisphenol-A-based epoxies toughened with various levels (0–12%) of chemically reacted liquid rubber, hydroxyl-terminated poly(butadiene-co-acrylonitrile) (HTBN) were studied for some of the mechanical and thermal properties. Although the ultimate tensile strength showed a continuous decrease with increasing rubber content, the toughness as measured by the area under the stress-vs.-strain curve and flexural strength reach a maximum around an optimum rubber concentration of 3% before decreasing. Tensile modulus was found to increase for concentrations below 6%. The glass transition temperature Tg as measured by DTA showed no variation for the toughened formulations. The TGA showed no variations in the pattern of decomposition. The weight losses for the toughened epoxies at elevated temperatures compare well with that of the neat epoxy. Scanning electron microscopy revealed the presence of a dual phase morphology with the spherical rubber particles precipitating out in the cured resin with diameter varying between 0.33 and 6.3 μm. In contrast, a physically blended rubber–epoxy showed much less effect towards toughening with the precipitated rubber particles of much bigger diameter (0.6–21.3 μm).

Hydroxyapatite(OHAp)-based ceramic composites with added ZrO2 have been prepared both by sintering at 1400 °C and by hot isostatic pressing (HIP) at 1450 °C and 140 MPa pressure (argon atmosphere). The development of the crystalline phases and the microstructure of the composites have been examined using X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, infrared and magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MASNMR) spectroscopic techniques. The fracture toughness and biocompatibility of the composites have also been studied. The effect of the addition of CeO2- and Y2O3-stabilized ZrO2 and of simple monoclinic ZrO2 to the initial physical mixture, on the structure and properties of the resulting composites has been investigated. In most of the sintered or HIP samples, the OHAp decomposes into tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP). CaO, which forms as a product of decomposition, dissolves completely in ZrO2 and stabilizes the latter in its cubic/tetragonal phase. Presence of the β-TCP phase in the product seems to be the result of a structural synergistic effect of hexagonal OHAp. Two structurally distinct orthophosphate groups have been identified in the composites by MASNMR of 31P and attributed to decomposition products of OHAp at higher temperatures. The composites possess high KIC values (2–3 times higher than that of pure OHAp). Decomposition of hydroxyapatite gives rise to differences in microstructure between HIP and simply sintered composites although fracture toughness values are similar in magnitude indicating the presence of several toughening mechanisms. The in vitro SP2-O cell test suggests that these composites possess good biocompatibility. The combination of good biocompatibility, desirable microstructure and easy availability of initial reactants indicates that the simply sintered composite of OHAp and monoclinic ZrO2(ZAP-30) appears to be the most suitable for prosthetic applications.

In this article, we report the mechanical and biocompatibility properties of injection-molded high-density polyethylene (HDPE) composites reinforced with 40 wt % ceramic filler [hydroxyapatite (HA) and/or Al2O3] and 2 wt % titanate as a coupling agent. The mechanical property measurements revealed that a combination of a maximum tensile strength of 18.7 MPa and a maximum tensile modulus of about 855 MPa could be achieved with the injection-molded HDPE20 wt % HA20 wt % Al2O3 composites. For the same composite composition, the maximum compression strength was determined to be 71.6 MPa and the compression modulus was about 660 MPa. The fractrography study revealed the uniform distribution of ceramic fillers in the semicrystalline HDPE matrix. The cytocompatibility study with osteoblast-like SaOS2 cells confirmed extensive cell adhesion and proliferation on the injection-molded HDPE20 wt % HA20 wt % Al2O3 composites. The cell viability analysis with the 3(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay revealed a statistically significant difference between the injection-molded HDPE20 wt % HA20 wt % Al2O3 composites and sintered HA for various culture durations of upto 7 days. The difference in cytocompatibility properties among the biocomposites is explained in terms of the difference in the protein absorption behavior. (C) 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Addition of boron to cast Ti-6Al-4V alloy leads to significant refinement in grain size, which in turn improves processibilty as well as the mechanical properties of the as-cast alloy. Room temperature tensile and fatigue properties of Wrought Ti-6Al-4V-B alloys with B up to 0.09 wt.% are investigated. Thermo-mechanical processing at 950 degrees C caused kinking of alpha lamellae and alignment of TiB particles in the flow direction with a negligible change in prior beta grain and colony sizes, indicating the absence of dynamic recrystallisation during forging. Characterisation with the aid of X-ray and electron back scattered diffraction reveal a strong basal texture in B free alloy which gets randomised with the 0.09B addition in the forged condition. Marginal enhancement in tensile and fatigue properties upon forging is noted. B free wrought Ti-6Al-4V alloy exhibits better tensile strength as compared to B containing alloy, due to the operation of < c+a > slip on pyramidal planes with high value of CRSS as compared to < a > slip on basal and prismatic planes. Decrease in fatigue strength of Ti-6Al-4V-0.04B in as-cast and the wrought state is observed due to increase in the volume fraction of grain boundary a phase with B addition, which acts as a crack nucleation site. No significant effect of TiB particles on tensile and fatigue properties is observed. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The present study describes the course of microstructure evolution during accumulative roll bonding (ARB) of dissimilar aluminum alloys AA2219 and AA5086. The two alloys were sandwiched as alternate layers and rolled at 300 degrees C up to 8 passes with 50% height reduction per pass. A strong bonding between successive layers accompanied by substantial grain refinement (similar to 200-300 nm) is achieved after 8 passes of ARB. The processing schedule has successfully maintained the iso-strain condition up to 6 cycles between the two alloys. Afterwards, the fracture and fragmentation of AA5086 layers dominate the microstructure evolution. Mechanical properties of the 8 pass ARB processed material were evaluated in comparison to the two starting alloy sheets via room temperature tensile tests along the rolling direction. The strength of the 8 pass ARB processed material lies between that of the two starting alloys while the ductility decreases after ARB than that of the two constituent starting alloys. These differences in mechanical behavior have been attributed to the microstructural aspects of the individual layer and the fragmentation process. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
