Iron nanowires encapsulated in aligned carbon nanotube bundles show interesting magnetic properties. Besides the increased coercivity, Barkhausen jumps with 5 emu/g steps in magnetization are observed due to magnetization reversal or depinning of domains. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. The objective of the present in vitro research was to investigate cardiac tissue cell functions (specifically cardiomyocytes and neurons) on poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) (50:50 wt.%)-carbon nanofiber (CNF) composites to ascertain their potential for myocardial tissue engineering applications. CNF were added to biodegradable PLGA to increase the conductivity and cytocompatibility of pure PLGA. For this reason, different PLGA:CNF ratios (100:0, 75:25, 50:50,25:75, and 0:100 wt.%) were used and the conductivity as well as cytocompatibility of cardiomyocytes and neurons were assessed. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy analysis characterized the microstructure, chemistry, and crystallinity of the materials of interest to this study. The results show that PLGA:CNF materials are conductive and that the conductivity increases as greater amounts of CNF are added to PLGA, from OS m(-1) for pure PLGA (100:0 wt.%) to 5.5 x 10(-3) S m(-1) for pure CNF (0:100 wt.%). The results also indicate that cardiomyocyte density increases with greater amounts of CNF in PLGA (up to 25:75 wt.% PLGA:CNF) for up to 5 days. For neurons a similar trend to cardiomyocytes was observed, indicating that these conductive materials promoted the adhesion and proliferation of two cell types important for myocardial tissue engineering applications. This study thus provides, for the first time, an alternative conductive scaffold using nanotechnology which should be further explored for cardiovascular applications. (C) 2011 Acta Materialia Inc. Cobalt and iron nanoparticles are doped in carbon nanotube (CNT)/polymer matrix composites and studied for strain and magnetic field sensing properties. Characterization of these samples is done for various volume fractions of each constituent (Co and Fe nanoparticles and CNTs) and also for cases when only either of the metallic components is present. The relation between the magnetic field and polarization-induced strain are exploited. The electronic bandgap change in the CNTs is obtained by a simplified tight-binding formulation in terms of strain and magnetic field. A nonlinear constitutive model of glassy polymer is employed to account for (1) electric bias field dependent softening/hardening (2) CNT orientations as a statistical ensemble and (3) CNT volume fraction. An effective medium theory is then employed where the CNTs and nanoparticles are treated as inclusions. The intensity of the applied magnetic field is read indirectly as the change in resistance of the sample. Very small magnetic fields can be detected using this technique since the resistance is highly sensitive to strain. Its sensitivity due to the CNT volume fraction is also discussed. The advantage of this sensor lies in the fact that it can be molded into desirable shape and can be used in fabrication of embedded sensors where the material can detect external magnetic fields on its own. Besides, the stress-controlled hysteresis of the sample can be used in designing memory devices. These composites have potential for use in magnetic encoders, which are made of a magnetic field sensor and a barcode.

The magnetic properties of iron-filled multi-walled carbon nanotubes dispersed in polystyrene (Fe-MWNT/PS) have been investigated as a function of Fe-MWNT concentration (0.1-15 wt%) from 300 to 10 K. Electron microscopy studies indicate that Fe nanorods (aspect ratio similar to 5) remain trapped at various lengths of MWNT and are thus, prevented from oxidation as well as aggregation. The magnetization versus applied field (M-H loop) data of 0.1 wt% of Fe-MWNTs in PS show an anomalous narrowing at low temperatures which is due to the significant contribution from shape anisotropy of Fe nanorods. The remanence shows a threshold feature at 1 wt%. The enhanced coercivity shows a maximum at 1 wt% due to the dominant dipolar interactions among Fe nanorods. Also the squareness ratio shows a maximum at 1 wt%.

The role of homogeneity in ex situ grown conductive coatings and dimensionality in the lithium storage properties of TiO(2) is discussed here. TiO(2) nanotube and nanosheet comprising of mixed crystallographic phases of anatase and TiO(2) (B) have been synthesized by an optimized hydrothermal method. Surface modifications of TiO(2) nanotube are realized via coating the nanotube with Ag nanoparticles and amorphous carbon. The first discharge cycle capacity (at current rate = 10 mA g(-1)) for TiO(2) nanotube and nanosheet were 355 mAh g(-1) and 225 mAhg(-1), respectively. The conductive surface coating stabilized the titania crystallographic structure during lithium insertion-deinsertion processes via reduction in the accessibility of lithium ions to the trapping sites. The irreversible capacity is beneficially minimized from 110 mAh g(-1) for TiO(2) nanotubes to 96 mAh g(-1) and 57 mAhg(-1) respectively for Ag and carbon modified TiO(2) nanotubes. The homogeneously coated amorphous carbon over TiO(2) renders better lithium battery performance than randomly distributed Ag nanoparticles coated TiO(2) due to efficient hopping of electrons. In this work, we present field emission characteristics of multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT)-polystyrene composites at various weight fractions along the cross-section of sample. Scanning electron microscope images in cross-sectional view reveal that MWCNTs are homogeneously distributed across the thickness and the density of protruding tubes can be scaled with weight fraction of the composite film. Field emission from composites has been observed to vary considerably with density of MWCNTs in the polymer matrix. High current density of 100 mA/cm(2) was achieved at a field of 2.2 V/lm for 0.15 weight fraction. The field emission is observed to follow the Fowler-Nordheim tunneling mechanism, however, electrostatic screening is observed to play a role in limiting the current density at higher weight fractions. This paper studies the effect of longitudinal magnetic field on ultrasonic vibration in single walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) based on nonlocal continuum medium theory. Governing partial differential equations of CNTs are derived by considering the Lorentz magnetic forces applied on CNTs induced by a longitudinal magnetic field through Maxwell equations. The vibration characteristics of CNTs under a longitudinal magnetic field are obtained by solving the governing equations via wave propagation approach. The effects of longitudinal magnetic field on vibration of CNTs are discussed through numerical experiments. The present analysis show that vibration frequencies of CNTs drops dramatically in the presence of the magnetic field for various circumferential wavenumbers. Such effect is also observed for various boundary conditions of the CNT. New features for the effect of longitudinal magnetic field on ultrasonic vibration of CNTs, presented in this paper are useful in the design of nano-drive device, nano-oscillator and actuators and nano-electron technology, where carbon nanotubes act as basic elements.

We report the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the conductivity of multiwall carbon nanotube mat in the temperature range 1.4-150 K and in magnetic fields up to 10 T. It is observed that charge transport in this system is governed by Mott's variable-range hopping of three-dimensional type in the higher temperature range and two-dimensional type in the lower temperature range. Mott's various parameters, such as localization length, hopping length, hopping energy and density of states at the Fermi level are deduced from the variable-range hopping fit. The resistance of the sample decreases with the magnetic field applied in the direction of tube axis of the nanotubes. The magnetic field gives rise to delocalization of states with the well-known consequence of a decrease in Mott's T-0 parameter in variable-range hopping. The application of magnetic field lowers the crossover temperature at which three-dimensional variable-range hopping turns to two-dimensional variable-range hopping. The conductivity on the lower temperature side is governed by the weak localization giving rise to positive magnetoconductance. Finally, a magnetic field-temperature diagram is proposed showing different regions for different kinds of transport mechanism.

In the present work, the effect of longitudinal magnetic field on wave dispersion characteristics of equivalent continuum structure (ECS) of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) embedded in elastic medium is studied. The ECS is modelled as an Euler-Bernoulli beam. The chemical bonds between a SWCNT and the elastic medium are assumed to be formed. The elastic matrix is described by Pasternak foundation model, which accounts for both normal pressure and the transverse shear deformation. The governing equations of motion for the ECS of SWCNT under a longitudinal magnetic field are derived by considering the Lorentz magnetic force obtained from Maxwell's relations within the frame work of nonlocal elasticity theory. The wave propagation analysis is performed using spectral analysis. The results obtained show that the velocity of flexural waves in SWCNTs increases with the increase of longitudinal magnetic field exerted on it in the frequency range: 0-20 THz. The present analysis also shows that the flexural wave dispersion in the ECS of SWCNT obtained by local and nonlocal elasticity theories differ. It is found that the nonlocality reduces the wave velocity irrespective of the presence of the magnetic field and does not influences it in the higher frequency region. Further it is found that the presence of elastic matrix introduces the frequency band gap in flexural wave mode. The band gap in the flexural wave is found to independent of strength of the longitudinal magnetic field. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

We report the low temperature electrical and magnetic properties of polypyrrole (PPy)/multiwall carbon nanotube (MWNT) coaxial composite fibrils synthesized by the electro-polymerization method. The iron-filled MWNTs were first grown by chemical vapor deposition of a mixture of liquid phase organic compound and ferrocene by the one step method. Then the PPy/MWNT fibrils were prepared by the electrochemical polymerization process. Electron microscopy studies reveal that PPy coating on the surface of nanotube is quite uniform throughout the length. The temperature dependent electrical resistivity and magnetization measurements were done from room temperature down to 5 and 10 K, respectively. The room temperature resistivity (rho) of PPy/MWNT composite fibril sample is similar to 3.8 Omega m with resistivity ratio R-5 K/R-300 K] of similar to 300, and the analysis of rho(T) in terms of reduced activation energy shows that resistivity lies in the insulating regime below 40 K. The resistivity varies according to three dimensional variable range hopping mechanism at low temperature. The magnetization versus applied field (M-H loop) data up to a field of 20 kOe are presented, displaying ferromagnetic behavior at all temperatures with enhanced coercivities similar to 680 and 1870 Oe at room temperature and 10 K, respectively. The observation of enhanced coercivity is due to significant dipolar interaction among encapsulated iron nanoparticles, and their shape anisotropy contribution as well.

Three samples of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) TF200, TF150 and TF100, where T and F stand for toluene and ferrocene respectively, and numeral denotes the amount (mg) of ferrocene] filled with iron-nanoparticles (Fe-NPs) of different aspect ratios are grown by chemical vapor deposition of toluene-ferrocene mixture. Energy dispersive X-ray analysis shows a systematic variation in the intensities of peak corresponding to Fe, indicating that Fe is present in different amounts in the three MWCNT samples. The lengths of Fe-NPs lie in the range of 200-250; 80-120; and 30-40 nm for TF200, TF150 and TF100, respectively, as estimated statistically from transmission electron microscopy micrographs. However, the diameter of the encapsulated Fe-NPs does not vary significantly for different samples and is 20-30 nm for all samples. Hysteresis loop measurements on these MWCNT samples were done at 10, 150 and 300 K up to an applied field of 1.5 T. At 10 K, values of coercivity are 2584, 2315, and 2251 Oe for TF200, TF150 and TF100 respectively. This is attributed to the strong shape anisotropy of the Fe-NPs and significant dipolar interactions between them. Further, M-H loops reveal that saturation magnetization of TF200 is almost four times that of TF100 at all temperatures.

Carbon nanotubes (CNT) in their cellular like micro-structure have presented an excellent mechanical energy absorption capacity. Although, several efforts have been progressed to modify the CNT structure for further enhancing their energy absorption capacity but yet no report has revealed the effect of magnetic field on the mechanical behavior of as-grown CNT mat that contains magnetic iron nanoparticles in the form of decorated nanoparticles on the surface or filled inside core of the CNT. We report a significant impact of the presence of magnetic content that modifies the mechanical behavior of the entangled CNT mat in the presence of an external magnetic field. The energy absorption capacity doubles when magnetic field was applied in the radial direction of the CNT mat under uniaxial compression. (C) 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.
