Low temperature fluorination technique is adopted for fluorination of the following sulphur compounds in freon-11 medium (1) Sulphur dioxide (2) Thionyl chloride (3) Sulphuryl chloride (4) Tetrasulphur tetra nitride and (5) Sulphur bromide. All the compounds undergo oxidative fluorination to give rise to sulphur-fluorine compounds except sulphuryl chloride which resists fluorination. Sulphuryl chloride thus behaves as a good solvent medium for fluorination of other reactive compounds like elemental sulphur. Details of the experimental procedures adopted and the identification of the products will be presented.

Some new observations on the phenomenon of photocapacitane on n-type silicon MOS structures under low intensities of illumination are reported. The difference between the illuminated and dark C---characteristics is automatically followed as a function of the applied bias thereby obtaining the differential photocapacitance and the resulting characteristics has been termed as the Low Intensity Differential Photocapacitance (LIDP). For an MOS capacitor, the LIDP characteristics is seen to go through a well defined maximum. The phenomenon has been investigated under different ambient conditions like light intensity, temperature, dependance of the frequency of the light etc. and it has been found that the phenomenon is due to a band excband excitation. In this connection, a novel sensitive technique for the measurement of the capacitance based upon following the frequency changes of a tank circuit is also described in some detail. It is also shown that the phenomenon can be understood by a simple theoretical model.

The potential description of a quark-antiquark system seems to work very well in describing a number of hadronic properties. However, the precise form of the potential is unknown. The changes in the low-lying eigenvalues as a result of changes in the long-range part of the potential are investigated in a non-perturbative manner. It is shown by considering a variety of examples that the low-lying eigenvalues are insensitive to the long-range part of the potential.

We have carried out temperature- and pressure-dependent Raman and x-ray measurements on single crystals of Tb2Ti2O7. We attribute the observed anomalous temperature dependence of phonons to phonon-phonon anharmonic interactions. The quasiharmonic and anharmonic contributions to the temperature-dependent changes in phonon frequencies are estimated quantitatively using mode Grüneisen parameters derived from pressure-dependent Raman experiments and bulk modulus from high-pressure x-ray measurements. Further, our Raman and x-ray data suggest a subtle structural deformation of the pyrochlore lattice at ~9 GPa. We discuss possible implications of our results on the spin-liquid behavior of Tb2Ti2O7.

Discharge periods of lead-acid batteries are significantly reduced at subzero centigrade temperatures. The reduction is more than what can he expected due to decreased rates of various processes caused by a lowering of temperature and occurs despite the fact that active materials are available for discharge. It is proposed that the major cause for this is the freezing of the electrolyte. The concentration of acid decreases during battery discharge with a consequent increase in the freezing temperature. A battery freezes when the discharge temperature falls below the freezing temperature. A mathematical model is developed for conditions where charge-transfer reaction is the rate-limiting step. and Tafel kinetics are applicable. It is argued that freezing begins from the midplanes of electrodes and proceeds toward the reservoir in-between. Ionic conduction stops when one of the electrodes freezes fully and the time taken to reach that point, namely the discharge period, is calculated. The predictions of the model compare well to observations made at low current density (C/5) and at -20 and -40 degrees C. At higher current densities, however, diffusional resistances become important and a more complicated moving boundary problem needs to be solved to predict the discharge periods. Space-time codes from complex orthogonal designs (CODs) with no zero entries offer low Peak to Average Power Ratio (PAPR) and avoid the problem of switching off antennas. But square CODs for 2(a) antennas with a + 1. complex variables, with no zero entries were discovered only for a <= 3 and if a + 1 = 2(k), for k >= 4. In this paper, a method of obtaining no zero entry (NZE) square designs, called Complex Partial-Orthogonal Designs (CPODs), for 2(a+1) antennas whenever a certain type of NZE code exists for 2(a) antennas is presented. Then, starting from a so constructed NZE CPOD for n = 2(a+1) antennas, a construction procedure is given to obtain NZE CPODs for 2n antennas, successively. Compared to the CODs, CPODs have slightly more ML decoding complexity for rectangular QAM constellations and the same ML decoding complexity for other complex constellations. Using the recently constructed NZE CODs for 8 antennas our method leads to NZE CPODs for 16 antennas. The class of CPODs do not offer full-diversity for all complex constellations. For the NZE CPODs presented in the paper, conditions on the signal sets which will guarantee full-diversity are identified. Simulation results show that bit error performance of our codes is same as that of the CODs under average power constraint and superior to CODs under peak power constraint.

Experimental studies reveal a reduction in the values of permittivity for epoxy nanocomposites; at low filler loadings as compared to neat epoxy over a wide frequency range. This permittivity reduction is attributed to the interaction dynamics between nanoparticles: and epoxy chains at the interface region and interestingly, this interaction has also been found to influence the glass transition temperatures (T-g) of the examined nanocomposite systems. Accordingly, a dual nanolayer interface model for an epoxy based nanocomposite system is analyzed to explain the obtained permittivity characteristics.

Demagnetization to zero remanent value or to a predetermined value is of interest to magnet manufacturers and material users. Conventional methods of demagnetization using a varying alternating demagnetizing field, under a damped oscillatory or conveyor system, result in either high cost for demagnetization or large power dissipation. A simple technique using thyristors is presented for demagnetizing the material. Power consumption is mainly in the first two half-cycles of applied voltage. Hence power dissipation is very much reduced. An optimum value calculation for a thyristor triggering angle for demagnetizing high coercive materials is also presented.

1H NMR spin-lattice relaxation time (T1) studies have been carried out in the temperature range 100 K to 4 K, at two Larmor frequencies 11.4 and 23.3 MHz, in the mixed system of betaine phosphate and glycine phosphite (BPxGPI(1-x)), to study the effects of disorder on the proton group dynamics. Analysis of T1 data indicates the presence of a number of inequivalent methyl groups and a gradual transition from classical reorientations to quantum tunneling rotations. At lower temperatures, microstructural disorder in the local environments of the methyl groups, result in a distribution in the activation energy (Ea) and the torsional energy gap (E01). For certain values of x, the magnetisation recovery shows biexponential behaviour at lower temperatures.

The low-level jet (LLJ) over the Indian region, which is most prominent during the monsoon (June-September) season, has been studied with a general circulation model (GCM). The role of African orography in modulating this jet is the focus of this article. The presence o African orography intensifies the cross-equatorial flow. Contrary to previous modelling Studies we find that cross-equatorial flow occurs even in the absence of African orography, though this flow is muc weaker even when the Indian monsoon rainfall is high. However, the location of the meridional jet near the equator in the Somali region is linked to the Indian monsoon rainfall rather than to the land-sea contrast over Somalia. Also, the presence of African orography, and not the strength of the Indian monsoon, controls the vertical extent of the equatorial meridional wind. In an aqua-planet simulation, the cross-equatorial flow occurs about 30 to the west of the rainfall maximum. Thus, the longitudinal location of the equatorial Somali jet depends upon the occurrence of monsoon heating, but the vertical structure of the jet is on account of the western boundary current in the atmosphere due to the East African highlands under the influence of monsoonal heat source.

Wide-line proton NMR studies on polycrystalline tetramethylammonium tetrachlorozincate have been carried out at high hydrostatic pressures up to 15 kbar in the temperature range 77-300 K and at ambient pressure down to 4.2 K. A second-moment transition is observed to occur starting around 161 K, the temperature for the V-VI phase transition. This transition temperature is seen to have a negative pressure coefficient up to 2 kbar, beyond which it changes sign. At 77 K the second moment decreases to 4 kbar and then increases again as a function of pressure. The results are explained in terms of the dynamics of the N(CH3)4 groups.

Observations of the H272α recombination line towards the galactic centre show features near VLSR= 0, -50 and + 36 kms-1 . We have combined the parameters of these features with the available -166 measurements to obtain the properties of the ionized gas present along the line of sight and also in the -3 kpc arm-. For the line-of-sight ionized gas we get an electron density around 7 cm-3 and a pathlength through it 10-60 pc. The emission measure and the electron temperature are in the range 500-2900 pc cm-6 and 2000-6000 - respectively. The ionized gas in the 3 kpc arm has an electron density of 30 cm-3 and extends over 9 pc along the line of sight if we assume an electron temperature of 104 K. Using the available upper limit to the intensity of the H351α recombination line, we show that the distributed ionized gas responsible for the dispersion of pulsar signals should have a temperature > 4500 - and a minimum filling factor of 20 per cent. We also show that recombination lines from the -warm ionized- gas proposed by McKee & Ostriker (1977) should be detectable in the frequency range 100-150 MHz towards the galactic centre with the sensitivity available at present.

Ordinary nickel (II) oxide prepared by any of the usual methods is always contaminated with some higher valency states of nickel. Such nickel oxide however can be converted to pure nickel (II) oxide by soaking for some hours at 800–850°C in a closed system under a static inert atmosphere and in the presence of pure MnO as oxygen-getter. The resulting Ni(IT)O is highly resistant to oxidation.
