In this paper, sliding-mode-control-based guidance laws to intercept stationary, constant-velocity, and maneuvering targets at a desired impact angle are proposed. The desired impact angle, which is defined in terms of a desired line-of-sight angle, is achieved in finite time by selecting the missile's lateral acceleration to enforce terminal sliding mode on a switching surface designed using nonlinear engagement dynamics. The conditions for capturability are also presented. In addition, by considering a three-degree-of-freedom linear-interceptor dynamic model and by following the procedure used to design a dynamic sliding-mode controller, the interceptor autopilot is designed as a simple static controller to track the lateral acceleration generated by the guidance law. Numerical simulation results are presented to validate the proposed guidance laws and the autopilot design for different initial engagement geometries and impact angles.

Two new anthracene-functionalized fluorescent tris-imidazolium salts have been synthesized, characterized, and proven to be selective sensors for picric acid, which is a common constituent of many powerful explosives. Theoretical studies revealed an unusual ground-state electron transfer from picrate anion to the sensor molecules.

Sub-solidus phase relations in the ternary systems CaO-RuO2-SiO2 and CaO-RuO2-V2O5 have been refined using thermodynamic data on calcium ruthenates, silicates and vanadates. Tie lines are established by considering Gibbs energy change for exchange reactions. Quaternary oxides have not been detected in these systems. Because of the relatively large entropy associated with phase transition of Ca2SiO4 from olivine to alpha' structure at 1120 K, reversal of one tie line is seen in the system CaO-RuO2-SiO2 between 950 and 1230 K. There is no change in sub-solidus phase relation as a function of temperature in the system CaO-RuO2-V2O5. Since vanadium can exist in several lower oxidation states, the computed sub-solidus phase relations are valid only at high oxygen partial pressures. There is fair agreement between the computed phase diagram and the limited experimental information available for CaO-deficient compositions in the literature. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Be the strong coupling constant alpha(s) from the tau hadronn width using a renormalization group summed (RGS) expansion of the QCD Adler lunction. The main theoretical uncertainty in the extraction of as is due to the manner in which renormalization group invariance is implemented, and the as yet uncalculated higher order terms in the QCD perturbative series. We show that new expansion exhibits good renormalization group improvement and the behavior of the series is similar to that of the standard RGS expansion. The value of the strong coupling in (MS) over bar scheme obtained with the RCS expansion is alpha(s) (M-tau(2)) = 0.338 +/- 0.010. The convergence properties of the new expansion can be improved by Bond transformation and analytic continuation in t he Bond plane. This is discussed elsewhere in these issues.

We propose that grand minima in solar activity are caused by simultaneous fluctuations in the meridional circulation and the Babcock-Leighton mechanism for the poloidal field generation in the flux transport dynamo model. We present the following results: (a) fluctuations in the meridional circulation are more effective in producing grand minima; (b) both sudden and gradual initiations of grand minima are possible; (c) distributions of durations and waiting times between grand minima seem to be exponential; (d) the coherence time of the meridional circulation has an effect on the number and the average duration of grand minima, with a coherence time of about 30 yr being consistent with observational data. We also study the occurrence of grand maxima and find that the distributions of durations and waiting times between grand maxima are also exponential, like the grand minima. Finally we address the question of whether the Babcock-Leighton mechanism can be operative during grand minima when there are no sunspots. We show that an alpha-effect restricted to the upper portions of the convection zone can pull the dynamo out of the grand minima and can match various observational requirements if the amplitude of this alpha-effect is suitably fine-tuned.

The well-known Jeans criterion describes the onset of instabilities in an infinite, homogeneous, self-gravitating medium supported by pressure. Most realistic astrophysical systems, however, are not isolated - instead they are under the influence of an external field such as the tidal field due to a neighbour. Here, we do a linear perturbation analysis for a system in an external field and obtain a generalized dispersion relation that depends on the wavenumber, the sound speed and also the magnitude of the tidal field. A typical, disruptive tidal field is shown to make the system more stable against perturbations, and results in a higher effective Jeans wavelength. The minimum mass that can become unstable is then higher (super-Jeans) than the usual Jeans mass. Conversely, in a compressive tidal field, perturbations can grow even when the mass is lower (sub-Jeans). This approach involving the inclusion of tidal field opens up a new way of looking at instabilities in gravitating systems. The treatment is general and the simple analytical form of the modified Jeans criterion obtained makes it easily accessible.
