Infrared spectra of atmospherically important dimethylquinolines (DMQs), namely 2,4-DMQ, 2,6-DMQ, 2,7-DMQ, and 2,8-DMQ in the gas phase at 80 degrees C were recorded using a long variable path-length cell. DFT calculations were carried out to assign the bands in the experimentally observed spectra at the B3LYP/6-31G* level of theory. The spectral assignments particularly for the C-H stretching modes could not be made unambiguously using calculated anharmonic or scaled harmonic frequencies. To resolve this problem, a scaled force field method of assignment was used. Assignment of fundamental modes was confirmed by potential energy distributions (PEDs) of the normal modes derived by the scaled force fields using a modified version of the UMAT program in the QCPE package. We demonstrate that for large molecules such as the DMQs, the scaling of the force field is more effective in arriving at the correct assignment of the fundamentals for a quantitative vibrational analysis. An error analysis of the mean deviation of the calculated harmonic, anharmonic, and force field fitted frequencies from the observed frequency provides strong evidence for the correctness of the assignment.

Ambient-condition Raman spectra were collected in the strongly correlated NiS(1-x)Se(x) pyrite (0 <= x <= 1.2). Two samples (x = 0 and x = 0.55) were studied as a function of pressure up to 10 GPa, and for the x = 0.55 sample the pressure dependence of the infrared reflectivity was also measured (0-10 GPa). This gave a complete picture of the optical response of that system on approaching the metallic state both by application of pressure and/or by Se alloying, which corresponds to a volume expansion. A peculiar nonmonotonic (V-shaped) volume dependence was found for the quasiparticle spectral weight of both pure and Se-doped compounds. In the x = 0.55 sample the vibrational frequencies of the chalcogen dimer show an anomalous volume dependence on entering the metallic phase. The abrupt softening observed, particularly significant for the Se-Se pair, indicates the relevant role of the softness of the Se-Se bond as previously suggested by theoretical calculations.

Infrared spectra of atmospherically and astronomically important dimethylphenanthrenes (DMPs), namely 1,9-DMP, 2,4-DMP, and 3,9-DMP, were recorded in the gas phase from 400 to 4000 cm(-1) with a resolution of 0.5 cm(-1) at 110 degrees C using a 7.2 m gas cell. DFT calculations at the B3LYP/6-311G** level were carried out to get the harmonic and anharmonic frequencies and their corresponding intensities for the assignment of the observed bands. However, spectral assignments could not be made unambiguously using anharmonic or selectively scaled harmonic frequencies. Therefore, the scaled quantum mechanical (SQM) force field analysis method was adopted to achieve more accurate assignments. In this method force fields instead of frequencies were scaled. The Cartesian force field matrix obtained from the Gaussian calculations was converted to a nonredundant local coordinate force field matrix and then the force fields were scaled to match experimental frequencies in a consistent manner using a modified version of the UMAT program of the QCPE package. Potential energy distributions (PEDs) of the normal modes in terms of nonredundant local coordinates obtained from these calculations helped us derive the nature of the vibration at each frequency. The intensity of observed bands in the experimental spectra was calculated using estimated vapor pressures of the DMPs. An error analysis of the mean deviation between experimental and calculated intensities reveal that the observed methyl C-H stretching intensity deviates more compared to the aromatic C-H and non C-H stretching bands.

Infrared spectra of solid formamide are reported as a function of temperature. Solid formamide samples were prepared at 30 K and then annealed to higher temperatures (300 K) with infrared transmission spectra being recorded over the entire temperature range. The NH2 vibrations of the formamide molecule were found to be particularly very sensitive to temperature change. The IR spectra revealed a phase change occurring in solid formamide between 155 and 165 K. Spectral changes observed above and below the phase transition may be attributed to a rearrangement between formamide dimers and the formation of polymers is proposed at higher temperatures.

We present computer simulation study of two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy (2D-IR) of water confined in reverse micelles (RMs) of various sizes. The present study is motivated by the need to understand the altered dynamics of confined water by performing layerwise decomposition of water, with an aim to quantify the relative contributions of different layers water molecules to the calculated 2D-IR spectrum. The 0-1 transition spectra clearly show substantial elongation, due to in-homogeneous broadening and incomplete spectral diffusion, along the diagonal in the surface water layer of different sized RMs. Fitting of the frequency fluctuation correlation functions reveal that the motion of the surface water molecules is sub-diffusive and indicate the constrained nature of their dynamics. This is further supported by two peak nature of the angular analogue of van Hove correlation function. With increasing system size, the water molecules become more diffusive in nature and spectral diffusion almost completes in the central layer of the larger size RMs. Comparisons between experiments and simulations establish the correspondence between the spectral decomposition available in experiments with the spatial decomposition available in simulations. Simulations also allow a quantitative exploration of the relative role of water, sodium ions, and sulfonate head groups in vibrational dephasing. Interestingly, the negative cross correlation between force on oxygen and hydrogen of O-H bond in bulk water significantly decreases in the surface layer of each RM. This negative cross correlation gradually increases in the central water pool with increasing RMs size and this is found to be partly responsible for the faster relaxation rate of water in the central pool. Over the last few decades, there has been a significant land cover (LC) change across the globe due to the increasing demand of the burgeoning population and urban sprawl. In order to take account of the change, there is a need for accurate and up-to-date LC maps. Mapping and monitoring of LC in India is being carried out at national level using multi-temporal IRS AWiFS data. Multispectral data such as IKONOS, Landsat-TM/ETM+, IRS-ICID LISS-III/IV, AWiFS and SPOT-5, etc. have adequate spatial resolution (similar to 1m to 56m) for LC mapping to generate 1:50,000 maps. However, for developing countries and those with large geographical extent, seasonal LC mapping is prohibitive with data from commercial sensors of limited spatial coverage. Superspectral data from the MODIS sensor are freely available, have better temporal (8 day composites) and spectral information. MODIS pixels typically contain a mixture of various LC types (due to coarse spatial resolution of 250, 500 and 1000 in), especially in more fragmented landscapes. In this context, linear spectral unmixing would be useful for mapping patchy land covers, such as those that characterise much of the Indian subcontinent. This work evaluates the existing unmixing technique for LC mapping using MODIS data, using end-members that are extracted through Pixel Purity Index (PPI), Scatter plot and N-dimensional visualisation. The abundance maps were generated for agriculture, built up, forest, plantations, waste land/others and water bodies. The assessment of the results using ground truth and a LISS-III classified map shows 86% overall accuracy, suggesting the potential for broad-scale applicability of the technique with superspectral data for natural resource planning and inventory applications. Abstract: The H-1 NMR spectra of N-(2-pyridyl), N'-(3-pyridyl)ureas and N-(2-pyridyl), N'-(4-pyridyl)ureas in CDCl3 and (CD3)(2)CO have been assigned with the aid of COSY and NOE experiments and chemical shift and coupling constant correlations, The C-13 NMR spectra in CDCl3 were analysed utilizing the HETCOR and proton coupled spectra, The H-1 NMR spectra, NOE effects and MINDO/3 calculations have been utilized to show that the molecular conformation of these compounds has the 2-pyridyl ring coplanar with the urea plane with the N-H group hydrogen bonded to the nitrogen of the 2-pyridyl group on the other urea nitrogen while the 3/4-pyridyl group rotates rapidly about the N-C-3/N-C-4 bond.

Hydroxo-bridged homo- and hetero-trinuclear cobalt(III) complexes of the type [MII(H2O)2{(OH)2CoIII(N4)}2]X2·nH2O [MII= a divalent metal ion such as CoII, NiII or ZnII; N4=(en)2(en = ethane-1,2-diamine) or (NH3)4; X = SO4 or (ClO4)2; n= 3 or 5] have been prepared and spectroscopically characterized. The structure of [Cu{(OH)2Co(en)2}2][SO4]2·2H2O 1 has been determined. The geometry around copper atom is a pseudo-square-based pyramid, with the basal sites occupied by four bridging hydroxide oxygens and the apical site is occupied by a weakly co-ordinated sulfate anion [Cu–O 2.516(4)Å]. The hydroxo groups bridge pairs of cobalt(III) ions which are in near-octahedral environments. The ethylenediamine chelate rings have the twist conformation. In the crystal structure of [Cu{(OH)2Co(en)2}2][ClO4]4·2H2O 2 the perchlorate ion is not co-ordinated and the en ligands have envelope conformations. The sulfate ion in [Cu{(OH)2Co(NH3)4}2][SO4]2·4H2O 3 is not co-ordinated to the central copper ion. Electronic, infrared and variable-temperature EPR spectral data are discussed.

Infrared correlation functions, have been obtained from the analysis of band shapes of the 1400 cm−1 bending mode of NH4Cl, NH4Br and NH4I in both the Pm3m and Fm3m phases. The NH 4 + ion seems to undergo relatively free rotation in the high temperature Fm3m phases of these halides.

Infrared spectra of N-acetylthiourea (ATU) and its N,N,N′-trideuterated compound have been examined in the range 4000–50 cm−1. A complete vibrational assignment with a normal coordinate treatment based on a Urey-Bradley type intramolecular potential function supplemented with valence force function for the out of plane and torsional modes is proposed and the feature of the thioureido vibrations explained. A molecular orbital study by the CNDO/2 method of ATU and its oxygen analog is undertaken and the results are analyzed for a comparative study of the molecular electronic structure and conformation.

The ligating properties of 2-aminocyclopentene-1-dithiocarboxylic acid and its S-methyl esters were investigated. Complexes with Zn(II), Cd(II) and Hg(II) halides were synthesized and characterized by infrared and proton and carbon-13 NMR studies. The results are concordant with a bidentate coordination of the -CS2 group to the metal ions

Several N,N -dipyridyl- and N-phenyl-N -pyridyl-thioureas were examined in different solvents at various temperatures by 1H NMR in order to study their conformational properties. The influence of concentration and the methyl substituent in the pyridine ring on the chemical shifts of the NH and pyridine groups was investigated. The observed chemical shifts are analysed in terms of the conformational properties of the molecules. Free energy barriers to the internal rotation about the C N bonds have been determined. Infrared spectra have been measured to supplement the NMR studies. Intramolecular hydrogen bonding played a major role in the preferred conformation of pyridylthioureas. The data further revealed an interesting dynamic exchange phenomenon occurring in symmetric N,N -dipyridylthioureas between two intramolecularly hydrogen bonded conformers.

Enthalpy changes of the crystal-plastic and plastic-liquid transitions are related to the temperature range of stability of the plastic phase. Thermodynamics of the plastic state of binary mixtures have been examined. Infrared correlation times, τc, and activation energies have been measured for a few molecules in the plastic state. Molecular tumbling times, τt, have also been measured employing ESR spectra of a spin-probe. Plots of log τc(τt) 1/T are continuous through the plastic-liquid transition. Activation energies for molecular motion seem to vary in the same direction as the ΔH of the plastic-crystal transition. Infrared correlation times of solute molecules in binary solutions in the plastic and the liquid states show interesting variations with solute concentration.

The paper present a spectral iteration technique for the analysis of linear arrays of unequally spaced dipoles of unequal lengths. As an example, the Yagi-Uda array is considered for illustration. Analysis is carried out in both the spatial as well as the spectral domains, the two being linked by the Fourier transform. The fast Fourier transform algorithm is employed to obtain an iterative solution to the electric field integral equation and the need for matrix inversion is circumvented. This technique also provides a convenient means for testing the satisfaction of the boundary conditions on the array elements. Numerical comparison of the input impedance and radiation pattern have been made with results deduced elsewhere by other methods. The computational efficency of this technique has been found to be significant for large arrays.

K2Pb[Cu(NO2)6] and [N(CH3)4]2MX4 (M = Mn, Co, Cu or Zn and X = Cl or Br) undergo phase transitions which involve incommensurate phases. The transitions have been investigated by examining the changes in the NO2 and CH3 vibration bands in the i.r. spectra. Splitting and broadening of some of the bands across the incommensurate transitions are discussed in the context of geometrical restrictions in the incommensurate phases. The phase transitions have also been characterized using differential scanning calorimetry.
