Blue [{Cu(2,2'-bipy)(2)}(2){alpha-SiW12O40}] (bipy = bipyridyl) (1) and pale yellow [Mn(2,2'-bipy)(3)](2)[alpha-SiW12O40] (2) have been synthesized hydrothermally and characterized by IR spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray structure analysis. In 1, the [alpha-SiW12O40](4-) ion acts as a bridge between the two [{Cu(2,2'-bipy)(2)](2+) moieties via coordination through the terminal oxygen atoms, while in 2, the [Mn(2,2'-bipy)(3)](2+) ion balances the charge on the polyoxo anion without forming any covalent bond. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of transition metal-mediated transformation of [alpha-SiW9O34](10-) to [alpha-SiW12O40](4-).

Calcium sulphate (CaSO4) pseudomicrorods have been synthesized by alow-temperature hydrothermal method using CaSO4 powder as a precursor and hexadecylamine as a surfactant at 180 degrees C for at different intervals of time. The powder X-ray diffraction pattern indicates that the as-formed pseudomicrorods are of orthorhombic phase with lattice parameters a = 7.0023(4) angstrom, b = 6.9939(5) angstrom and c = 6.2434(4) angstrom. Scanning electron microscopy images show that the pseudomicrorods have diameters of about 0.2-2.5 mm and lengths of about 2-10 mm. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy shows a strong doublet near 609 and 681 cm(-1) arising from nu(4) (SO42) bending vibrations. The strongest band observed at 1132 cm(-1) is associated with nu(3) (SO42-) stretching vibrations. The band near 420-450 cm(-1) is attributed to nu(2) (SO42-) bending vibrations. The Raman spectrum exhibits an intense peak at 1008 cm(-1) associated with the SO42- mode. The photoluminescence spectrum exhibits UV bands (330, 350 nm), strong green bands (402, 436 nm) and weak blue bands (503 nm). A widening of the optical band gap was observed as the particle size decreased.

Preferential cleavage of active genes by DNase I has been correlated with a structurally altered conformation of DNA at the hypersensitive site in chromatin. To have a better understanding of the structural requirements for gene activation as probed by DNase I action, digestability by DNase I of synthetic polynucleotides having the ability to adopt B and non-B conformation (like Z-form) was studied which indicated a marked higher digestability of the B-form of DNA. Left handed Z form present within a natural sequence in supercoiled plasmid also showed marked resistance towards DNase I digestion. We show that alternating purine-pyrimidine sequences adopting Z-conformation exhibit DNAse I foot printing even in a protein free system. The logical deductions from the results indicate that 1) altered structure like Z-DNA is not a favourable substrate for DNase I, 2) both the ends of the alternating purine-pyrimidine insert showed hypersensitivity, 3) B-form with a minor groove of 12-13 A is a more favourable substrate for DNase I than an altered structure, 4) any structure of DNA deviating largely from B form with a capacity to flip over to the B-form are potential targets for the DNase I enzymic probes in naked DNA.

A detailed evaluation of size, shape and microstrains of BaTiO3 crystallites produced by hydrothermal crystallization at 90 – 180 °C and 0.1 – 1.2 MPa, from amorphous TiO2· xH2O (3 < × < 8) gel and aqueous Ba(OH)2 is presented, using X-ray line-broadening and TEM studies. Whereas the concentration of Ba(OH)2 and the acceptor impurities affect the crystallite shape, the stoichimetry with respect to Ba/Ti, donor as well as acceptor impurities, and the temperature of crystallization influence the microstrains. It is shown that strains in the crystallites are related to the point defects in the lattice. Compensation of the residually present hydroxyl ions in the oxygen sublattice by cation vacancies results in strains leading to metastable presence of the cubic phase at room temperature. Studies on the diffuse phase transition behaviour of these submicron powders show that the stable tetragonal phase is produced only on annealing at high temperatures where the mobility of cations vacancies are larger. Heat-treatment reduces anisotropy and strain in undoped samples, whereas annealing is less effective in doped materials. Comparison of the crystillite size by TEM showed better agreement with the Warren—Averbach method.

Molybdenum-doped TiO2 organic-inorganic hybrid nanoparticles were synthesized under mild hydrothermal conditions by in situ surface modification using n-butylamine. This was carried out at 150 degrees C at autogeneous pressure over 18 h. n-Butylamine was selected as a surfactant since it produced nanoparticles of the desired size and shape. The products were characterized using powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, dynamic light-scattering spectroscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Chemical oxygen demand was estimated in order to determine the photodegradation efficiency of the molybdenum-doped TiO2 hybrid nanoparticles in the treatment of pharmaceutical effluents. It was found that molybdenum-doped TiO2 hybrid nanoparticles showed higher photocatalytic efficiency than untreated TiO2 nanoparticles.

To acquire fertilizing potential, mammalian spermatozoa must undergo capacitation and acrosome reaction. Our earlier work showed that pentoxifylline (0.45 mM), a sperm motility stimulant, induced an early onset of hamster sperm capacitation associated with tyrosine phosphorylation of 45-80 kDa proteins, localized to the mid-piece of the sperm tail. To assess the role of protein tyrosine phosphorylation in sperm capacitation, we used tyrphostin-A47 (TP-47), a specific protein tyrosine kinase inhibitor. The dose-dependent (0.1-0.5 mM) inhibition of tyrosine phosphorylation by TP-47 was associated with inhibition of hyperactivated motility and 0.5 mM TP-47-treated spermatozoa exhibited a distinct circular motility pattern. This was accompanied by hypo-tyrosine phosphorylation of 45-60 kDa proteins, localized to the principal piece of the intact-sperm and the outer dense fiber-like structures in detergent treated-sperm. Sperm kinematic analysis (by CASA) of spermatozoa, exhibiting circular motility (at 1st hr), showed lower values of straight line velocity, curvilinear velocity and average path velocity, compared to untreated controls. Other TP-47 analogues, tyrphostin-AG1478 and -AG1296, had no effect either on kinematic parameters or sperm protein tyrosine phosphorylation. These studies indicate that TP-47-induced circular motility of spermatozoa is compound-specific and that the tyrosine phosphorylation status of 45-60 kDa flagellum-localized proteins could be key regulators of sperm flagellar bending pattern, associated with the hyperactivation of hamster spermatozoa.

Among the various cathode materials studied for Li-ion batteries over the past many years, spinet LiMn2O4 is found to be one of the most attractive materials. Nanoparticles of the electrode materials sustain high rate capability due to large surface to volume ratio and small diffusion path length. Nanoparticles of spinel LiMn2O4 have been synthesized by microwave hydrothermal technique using prior synthesized amorphous MnO2 and LiOH. The phase and purity of spinel LiMn2O4 are confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction. The morphological studies have been investigated using field emission scanning electron microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The electrochemical performances of the material for Li insertion/extraction are evaluated by cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge-discharge cycling and AC impedance studies. The initial discharge capacity is found to be about 89 mAh g(-1) at current density of 21 mA g(-1). (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Well uniform microspheres of phase pure Covellite were synthesized through a simple hydrothermal approach using poly vinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) as surfactant. The micro-spheres were constituted of numerous self-organized knitted nano-ribbons of similar to 30 nm thickness. The effect of conc. PVP in the hydrothermal precursor solution on the product morphology was investigated. Based on the out-coming product micro-architecture a growth mechanism was proposed which emphasized bubbled nucleation inside the hydrothermal reactor. In a comparative study on linear optical properties, enhancement of luminescent intensity was observed for nano-ribbon clung microspheres rather than that of agglomerates of distorted particles, which may be attributed to better crystallinity as well as reduced surface defects and ionic vacancies for ribbon-like nano-structures.

Eu3+ (8 mol%) activated gadolinium oxide nanorods have been prepared by hydrothermal method without and with surfactant, cityl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB). Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) studies reveal that the as-formed product is in hexagonal Gd(OH)(3):Eu phase and subsequent heat treatment at 350 and 600 degrees C transforms the sample to monoclinic GdOOH:Eu and cubic Gd2O3:Eu phases, respectively. The structural data and refinement parameters for cubic Gd2O3:Eu nanorods were calculated by the Rietveld refinement. SEM and TEM micrographs show that as-obtained Gd(OH)(3):Eu consists of uniform nanorods in high yield with uniform diameters of about 15 nm and lengths of about 50-150 nm. The temperature dependent morphological evolution of Gd2O3:Eu without and with CTAB surfactant was studied. FTIR studies reveal that CTAB surfactant plays an important role in converting cubic Gd2O3:Eu to hexagonal Gd(OH)(3):Eu. The strong and intense Raman peak at 489 cm(-1) has been assigned to A(g) mode, which is attributed to the hexagonal phase of Gd2O3. The peak at similar to 360 cm(-1) has been assigned to the combination of F-g and E-g modes, which is mainly attributed to the cubic Gd2O3 phase. The shift in frequency and broadening of the Raman modes have been attributed to the decrease in crystallite dimension to the nanometer scale as a result of phonon confinement. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. A layered double hydroxide (LDH) with chemical composition LiAl2(OH)(7) . 2H(2)O was prepared via a wet chemical route of gel to crystallite (G-C) conversion at 80 degrees C involving the reaction of hydrated alumina gel, Al2O3.yH(2)O (80 < y < 120) with LiOH (Li2O/Al2O3 greater than or equal to 0.5) in presence of hydrophilic solvents such as ethanol under refluxing conditions. The hydrothermal synthesis was carried out using the same reactants by heating to less than or equal to 140 degrees C in a Teflon-lined autoclave under autogenerated pressure (less than or equal to 20 MPa). Transmission electron microscopy showed needle-shaped aggregates of size 0.04-0.1 mu m for the gel to crystallite conversion product, whereas the hydrothermal products consisted of individual lamellar crystallites of size 0.2-0.5 mu m with hexagonal morphology. The LDH prepared through the gel to crystallite conversion could be converted into LiAl(OH)(4) . H2O or LiAl(OH)(3)NO3 . H2O by imbibition of LiOH or LiNO3, respectively, under hydrothermal conditions. Thermal decomposition of LDH above 1400 degrees C gave rise to LiAl5O8 accompanied by the evaporation of Li2O. LiAl(OH)(4) . H2O and LiAl(OH)(3)NO3 . H2O decomposed in the temperature range 400-1000 degrees C to alpha- or beta-LiAlO2. The compositional dependence of the product, the intermediate phases formed during the heat treatment and the possible reactions involved are described in detail.

Two new open-framework iron fluorophosphates, [C(4)N(2)H(12)](0.5) [FeF(HPO(4))(H(2)PO(4))] (I) and [C(4)N(2)H(12)][Fe(4)F(2)(H(2)O)(4)(PO(4))(4)]. 0.5H(2)O (II), were synthesized hydrothermally using piperazine as a templating agent. The structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Compound I crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pbca, a = 7.2126(2) Angstrom, b = 14.2071(4) Angstrom, c = 17.1338(2) Angstrom, Z = 8. The structure is composed of infinite anionic chains of [FeF(HPO(4))(H(2)PO(4))](n)(-) built by trans-fluorine sharing FeF(2)O(4) octahedra. These chains are similar to those found in tancoite-type minerals. Compound II crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/n, a = 9.9045(3) Angstrom, b = 12.3011(3) Angstrom, c = 17.3220(4) Angstrom, beta = 103.7010(10)degrees, Z = 4. The structure of compound II has a three-dimensional (3D) architecture with an eight-membered channel along the b axis, in which protonoted piperazine molecules reside. The complex framework is built from two types of secondary building unit (SBU): one hexamer [Fe(3)F(2)(H(2)O)(2)(PO(4))(3)] (SBU6), and one dimer [FeO(4)(H(2)O)(2)PO(4)] (SBU2). The vertex sharing between these SBUs create the 3D structure.
