Surface elastic strain field generated in conical indentation of sintered alumina clay composite was measured to verify the suitability of a superposed combination of Boussinesq and blister stress fields, used previously for analysing the indentation problem. The residual strain measured in the elastic hinterland is used to estimate the blister field strength without any reference to stress relation within that field. The approach may be useful in fracture studies of brittle materials.

Non-linear resistors having current-limiting capabilities at lower field strengths, and voltage-limiting characteristics (varistors) at higher field strengths, were prepared from sintered polycrystalline ceramics of (Ba0.6Sr0.4)(Ti0.97Zr0.03)O3+0.3 at % La, and reannealed after painting with low-melting mixtures of Bi2O3 + PbO +B2O3. These types of non-linear characteristics were found to depend upon the non-uniform diffusion of lead and the consequent distribution of Curie points (T c) in these perovskites, resulting in diffuse phase transitions. Tunnelling of electrons across the asymmetric barrier at tetragonak-cubic interfaces changes to tunnelling across the symmetric barrier as the cubic phase is fully stabilized through Joule heating at high field strengths. Therefore the current-limiting characteristics switch over to voltage-limiting behaviour because tunnelling to acceptor-type mid-bandgap states gives way to band-to-band tunnelling.

Stable and highly reproducible voltage-limiting characteristics have been observed at room temperature for polycrystalline ceramics prepared from donor-doped BaTiO3 solid solutions containing isovalent lattice substitute ions that lower the Curie point Tc. When the ambient temperature Ta is decreased such that Ta < Tc, the same ceramics show current-limiting behaviour. The leakage current, the breakdown voltage and the non-linear coefficient (α = 30−50) could be varied with grain-boundary layer (GBL) modifiers and postsintering annealing. The magnitude of the abnormally high dielectric constant (epsilon (Porson)r greater than, approximately 105) indicates the prevalence of GBL capacitance in these ceramics. Analyses of the current-voltage relations show that GBL conduction at Ta < Tc corresponds to tunnelling across asymmetric barriers formed under steady state Joule heating. At Ta > Tc, trap-related conduction gives way to tunnelling across symmetric barriers as the field strength increases.

Polycrystalline SrTiO3 films were prepared by pulsed excimer laser ablation on Si and Pt coated Si substrates. Several growth parameters were varied including ablation fluence, pressure, and substrate temperature. The structural studies indicated the presence of [100] and [110] oriented growth after annealing by rapid thermal annealing at 600-degrees-C for 60 s. Deposition at either lower pressures or at higher energy densities encouraged film growth with slightly preferred orientation. The scanning electron microscopy studies showed the absence of any significant particulates on the film surface. Dielectric studies indicated a dielectric constant of 225, a capacitance density of 3.2 fF/mum2, and a charge density of 40 fC/mum for films of 1000 nm thick. The dc conductivity studies on these films suggested a bulk limited space charge conduction in the high field regime, while the low electric fields induced an ohmic conduction. Brief time dependent dielectric breakdown studies on these films, under a field of 250 kV/cm for 2 h, did not exhibit any breakdown, indicating good dielectric strength.

We explore the consequences of the model of spin-down-induced flux expulsion for the magnetic field evolution in solitary as well as in binary neutron stars. The spin evolution of pulsars, allowing for their field evolution according to this model, is shown to be consistent with the existing observational constraints in both low- and high-mass X-ray binary systems. The contribution from pulsars recycled in massive binaries to the observed excess in the number of low-field (10(11)-10(12) G) solitary pulsars is argued to be negligible in comparison with that of normal pulsars undergoing a 'restricted' field decay predicted by the adopted field decay model. Magnetic fields of neutron stars born in close binaries with intermediate- or high-mass main-sequence companions are predicted to decay down to values as low as similar to 10(6) G, which would leave them unobservable as pulsars during most of their lifetimes. The post-recycling evolution of some of these systems can, however, account for the observed binary pulsars having neutron star or massive white dwarf companions. Pulsars recycled in the disc population low-mass binaries are expected to have residual fields greater than or similar to 10(8) G, while for those processed in globular clusters larger residual fields are predicted because of the lower field strength of the neutron star at the epoch of binary formation. A value of tau similar to 1-2 x 10(7) yr for the mean value of the Ohmic decay time-scale in the crusts of neutron stars is suggested, based on the consistency of the model predictions with the observed distribution of periods and magnetic fields in the single and binary pulsars.

The presence of allophane minerals imparts special engineering features to the volcanic ash soils. This study examines the reasons for the allophanic soils exhibiting unusual shear strength properties in comparison to sedimentary clays. The theories of residual shear strength developed for natural soils and artificial soil mixtures and the unusual surface charge properties of the allophane particle are invoked to explain the high shear strength values of these residual soils. The lack of any reasonable correlation between phi' (effective stress-strength parameter) and plasticity index values for allophanic soils is explained on the basis of the unusual structure of the allophane particle. The reasons as to why natural soil slopes in allophanic soil areas (example, Dominica, West Indies) are stable at much steeper angles than natural slopes in sedimentary clay deposits (London clay areas) are explained in light of the hypothesis developed in this study.

(La0.667Ca0.333Mn1-xMO3-delta)-O-x (M = Mg, Li or Re) exhibit insulating behaviour and nonlinear current-voltage (J-E) relationship with voltage-limiting characteristics at temperatures below the ferromagnetic transition (T-c). The high current region is set in at field strengths <60 V/cm. Nonlinearity exponent, alpha in the relation J = kE(alpha) increases inversely with temperature. In presence of an external magnetic field, the J-E curves show higher current density at lower field strengths. Microstructural studies indicate that there is no segregation of secondary phases in the grain boundary regions. There is remarkable changes in p(T) as well as J-E curves with the grain size. Annealing studies in lower p(O2) atmospheres indicate that there is significant out-diffusion of oxygen ions through the grain boundary layer (GBL) regions creating oxygen vacancies in the GBL regions. The concentration of Mn4+ ions is lowered at the GBL due to oxygen vacancies, reducing the probability of hopping and resulting in insulating behaviour. Therefore an insulating barrier is introduced between two conducting grains and the carrier motion between the grains is inhibited. Thus below T-c, where sufficient increase in resistivity is observed the conduction may be arising as a result of spin dependent tunneling across the barrier. External electric field lowers the barrier height and establishes carrier transport across the barrier. Above certain field strength, barrier height diminishes significantly and thereby allowing large number of carriers for conduction, giving rise to highly nonlinear conductivity. Stable and highly reproducible current‐limiting characteristics are observed for polycrystalline ceramics prepared by sintering mixtures of coarse‐grained, donor‐doped BaTiO3 (tetragonal) as the major phase and ultrafine, undoped cubic perovskite such as BaSnO3, BaZrO 3, SrTiO3, or BaTiO3 (cubic). The linear current‐voltage (I‐V) relation changes over to current limiting as the field strength increases, when thermal equilibrium is attained. The grain‐boundary layers with low donor and high Sn, Zr, or Sr have depleted charge carrier density as compared to that in the grain bulk. The voltage drop at the grain‐boundary layers diminishes the temperature gradient between the interior and surface regions.

We present a timing and broad-band pulse-phase-resolved spectral analysis of the transient Be X-ray binary pulsar 1A 1118-61 observed during its outburst in 2009 January using Suzaku observations. The Suzaku observations were made twice, once at the peak of the outburst, and the other 13 d later at its declining phase. Pulse profiles from both observations exhibit strong energy dependence with several peaks at low energies and a single peak above similar to 10 keV. A weak, narrow peak is detected at the main dip of the pulse profiles from both observations in the energy bands below 3 keV, indicating the presence of a phase-dependent soft excess in the source continuum. The broad-band energy spectrum of the pulsar could be fitted well with a partial covering cut-off power-law model and a narrow iron fluorescence line. We also detect a broad cyclotron feature at similar to 50 keV from both observations which is a feature common for accretion-powered pulsars with high magnetic field strength. The pulse-phase-resolved spectral analysis shows an increase in the absorption column density of the partial covering component, as well as variation in the covering fraction at the dips of the pulse profiles, which naturally explains energy dependence of the same. The cyclotron line parameters also show significant variation with pulse phase with an similar to 10 keV variation in the cyclotron line energy and a variation in depth by a factor of 3. This can be explained either as the effect of different viewing angles of the dipole field at different pulse phases, or due to a more complex underlying magnetic field geometry.

We use a self-consistent strong-coupling expansion for the self-energy (perturbation theory in the hopping) to describe the nonequilibrium dynamics of strongly correlated lattice fermions. We study the three-dimensional homogeneous Fermi-Hubbard model driven by an external electric field showing that the damping of the ensuing Bloch oscillations depends on the direction of the field and that for a broad range of field strengths a long-lived transient prethermalized state emerges. This long-lived transient regime implies that thermal equilibrium may be out of reach of the time scales accessible in present cold atom experiments but shows that an interesting new quasiuniversal transient state exists in nonequilibrium governed by a thermalized kinetic energy but not a thermalized potential energy. In addition, when the field strength is equal in magnitude to the interaction between atoms, the system undergoes a rapid thermalization, characterized by a different quasiuniversal behavior of the current and spectral function for different values of the hopping. Compact stars with strong magnetic fields (magnetars) have been observationally determined to have surface magnetic fields of order of 10(14)-10(15) G, the implied internal field strength being several orders larger. We study the equation of state and composition of dense hypernuclear matter in strong magnetic fields in a range expected in the interiors of magnetars. Within the non-linear Boguta-Bodmer-Walecka model we find that the magnetic field has sizable influence on the properties of matter for central magnetic field B >= 10(17) G, in particular the matter properties become anisotropic. Moreover, for the central fields B >= 10(18) G, the magnetized hypernuclear matter shows instability, which is signalled by the negative sign of the derivative of the pressure parallel to the field with respect to the density, and leads to vanishing parallel pressure at the critical value B-cr congruent to 10(19) G. This limits the range of admissible homogeneously distributed fields in magnetars to fields below the critical value B-cr. (c) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This article reports the intermittent pulse electric field stimulus mediated in vitro cellular response of L929 mouse fibroblast/SaOS2 osteoblast-like cells on austenitic steel substrates in reference to the field strength dependent behavior. The cellular density and morphometric analyses revealed that the optimal electric (E) fields for the maximum cell density of adhered L929 (similar to 270 % to that of untreated sample) and SaOS2 (similar to 280 % to that of untreated sample) cells are 1 V (0.33 V/cm) and 2 V (0.67 V/cm), respectively. The trend in aspect ratio of elongated SaOS2 cells did not indicate any significant difference among the untreated and treated (up to 3.33 V/cm) cells. The average cell and nucleus areas (for SaOS2 cells) were increased with an increase in the applied voltage up to 8 V (2.67 V/cm) and reduced thereafter. However, the ratio of nucleus to total cell area was increased significantly on the application of higher voltages (2-10 V), indicating the possible influence of E-field on cell growth. Further, the cell density results were compared with earlier results obtained with sintered Hydroxyapatite (HA) and HA-BaTiO3 composites and such comparison revealed that the enhanced cell density on steel sample occurs upon application of much lower field strength and stimulation time. This indicates the possible role of substrate conductivity towards cell growth in pulsed E-field mediated culture conditions.

This paper reports on the characterization of an integrated micro-fluidic platform for controlled electrical lysis of biological cells and subsequent extraction of intracellular biomolecules. The proposed methodology is capable of high throughput electrical cell lysis facilitated by nano-composite coated electrodes. The nano-composites are synthesized using Carbon Nanotube and ZnO nanorod dispersion in polymer. Bacterial cells are used to demonstrate the lysis performance of these nanocomposite electrodes. Investigation of electrical lysis in the microchannel is carried out under different parameters, one with continuous DC application and the other under DC biased AC electric field. Lysis in DC field is dependent on optimal field strength and governed by the cell type. By introducing the AC electrical field, the electrokinetics is controlled to prevent cell clogging in the micro-channel and ensure uniform cell dispersion and lysis. Lysis mechanism is analyzed with time-resolved fluorescence imaging which reveal the time scale of electrical lysis and explain the dynamic behavior of GFP-expressing E. coli cells under the electric field induced by nanocomposite electrodes. The DNA and protein samples extracted after lysis are compared with those obtained from a conventional chemical lysis method by using a UV-Visible spectroscopy and fluorimetry. The paper also focuses on the mechanistic understanding of the nano-composite coating material and the film thickness on the leakage charge densities which lead to differential lysis efficiency.

Quantum emulation property of the cold atoms has generated a lot of interest in studying systems with synthetic gauge fields. In this article, we describe the physics of two component Fermi gas in the presence of synthetic non-Abelian SU(2) gauge fields. Even for the non-interacting system with the gauge fields, there is an interesting change in the topology of the Fermi surface by tuning only the gauge field strength. When a trapping potential is used in conjunction with the gauge fields, the non-interacting system has the ability to produce novel Hamiltonians and show characteristic change in the density profile of the cloud. Without trap, the gauge fields act as an attractive interaction amplifier and for special kinds of gauge field configurations, there are two-body bound states for any attraction even in three dimensions. For a many body system, the gauge fields can induce a crossover from a weak superfluid to a strong superfluid with transition temperature as high as the Fermi temperature. The superfluid state obtained for a very large gauge field strength is a superfluid of new kind of bosons, called ``rashbons'', the properties of which are independent of its constituent two component fermions and are solely determined by the gauge field strength. We also discuss the collective excitations over the superfluid ground states and the experimental relevance of the physics.

Aiming to develop high mechanical strength and toughness by tuning ultrafine lamellar spacing of magnetic eutectic alloys, we report the mechanical and magnetic properties of the binary eutectic alloys Co90.5Zr9.5 and Fe90.2Zr9.8, as well as the pseudo-binary eutectic alloys Co82.4Fe8Zr9.6, Co78Fe12.4Zr9.6 and Co49.2Fe49.2Zr9.6 developed by suction-casting. The lower lamellar spacing around 100 nm of the eutectics Co49.2Fe49.2Zr9.6 yields a high hardness of 713(+/- 20) VHN. Magnetic measurements reveal high magnetic moment of 1.92 mu B (at 5 K) and 1.82 mu B (at 300 K) per formula unit for this composition. The magnetization vs. applied field data at 5 K show a directional preference to some extent and therefore smaller non-collinear magnetization behavior compared to Co11Zr2 reported in the literature due to exchange frustration and transverse spin freezing owing to the presence of smaller Zr content. The decay of magnetization as a function of temperature along the easy axis of magnetization of all the eutectic compositions can be described fairly well by the spin wave excitation equation Delta M/M(0) = BT3/2 + CT5/2.
