A class of conjugated molecules containing donor (thiophene) and acceptor (malononitrile) is synthesized by Knoevenagel condensation reaction between 2-(2,6-dimethy1-4H-pyran-4-ylidene) malononitrile and thiophene carbaldehyde containing two and three thiophene units. The resulting molecules are characterized by H-1 and C-13 NMR. We have performed UV-vis absorption, fluorescence, and cyclic voltammetry measurements on these materials. The spectroscopic and electrochemical measurements proved beyond doubt that these materials possess lowexcitation gap and are suitable for being an active material in various electronic devices. We have also performed electronic structure calculations using density functional theory (DFT) and INDO/SCI methods to characterize the ground and excited states of this class of molecules. These donor-acceptor molecules show a strong charge transfercharacter that increases with the increase in the number of thiophene rings coupled to the malononitrile acceptor moiety. We have also calculated the pi-coherence length, Stoke's shift, and effect of solvents on excited states for this class of molecules, Our theoretical values agree well with experimental results.

Polyaniline salts have been synthesized by chemical oxidative polymerization of aniline in the presence of phenoxy acetic acid and its two derivatives using emulsion method at room temperature and characterized by different techniques such as infrared, H-1 and C-13 NMR, UV-visible spectroscopy, SEM, wide angle X-ray diffractograms and conductivity measurements. These polyaniline salts have the desirable property of high solubility for processibility in solvents such as DNIF, DMSO and a mixture of CHCl3 and acetone and they exhibit fairly good conductivity of similar to 3.0 x 10(-3) S cm(-1). The variations in solubility, conductivity and morphology with the protonating strength of the dopants are examined.

Zinc forms two types of complexes with o-vanillin salicyloylhydrazone. The H-1 and C-13 nmr studies suggest that it coordinates with azomethine nitrogen, the carbonyl oxygen and with one or both of the phenolic oxygens. The H-1-H-1 and H-1 decoupled C-13-C-13 two-dimensional nuclear Overhauser and exchange spectra show that there is an exchange between the two types of complexes.

Preparation and characterization of the fullerenes, C60 and C70, are described in detail, including the design of the generators fabricated locally. The characterization techniques employed are UV-visible, IR, Raman and C-13 NMR spectroscopies, scanning as well as transmission electron microscopy and mass spectrometry. The electron energy level diagram of C60 as well as the one-electron reductions of C60 and C70 leading to various anions are discussed. Electronic absorption spectra of C60- and C60(2-) are reported. Phase transitions from the plastic to the crystalline states of C60 and C70 are examined. Based on a C-13 NMR study in a mixture of nematic liquid crystals, it has been demonstrated that C60 retains its extraordinary symmetry in solution phase as well. Interaction of C60 and C70 with strong electron-donor molecules has been investigated employing cyclic voltammetry. Superconductivity of K(x)C60 has been studied by non-resonant microwave absorption; Na(x)C60 as well as K(c)C70 are shown to be non-superconducting. Doping C60 with iodine does not make it superconducting. Interaction of C60 with SbCl5 and liquid Br2 gives rise to halogenated products.

This paper reports a study on the microstructure of two series of copolyperoxides of alpha-methylstyrene, with styrene and with methylmethacrylate. The copolyperoxides were synthesized by the free radical-initiated oxidative copolymerization of the vinyl monomer pairs. The copolyperoxide compositions obtained from the H-1 and C-13 NMR spectra led to the determination of the reactivity ratios. The product of the reactivity ratios indicates that alpha-methylstyrene forms a block copolyperoxide with styrene and a random copolyperoxide with methylmethacrylate. Microstructural parameters like average sequence length, run number, etc. have been determined for the latter copolyperoxide from analysis of its C-13 NMR spectrum. The aromatic quaternary and carbonyl carbons were found to be sensitive to triad sequences. The end groups of the copolyperoxides have been identified by H-1 NMR as well as FTIR spectroscopic techniques. The thermal degradation of the copolyperoxides has been studied by differential scanning calorimetry, which confirms the alternating peroxide units in the copolyperoxide chain.

Poly(vinyl acetate peroxide) (PVACP) was prepared from vinyl acetate by free-radical-initiated oxidative polymerization. The polyperoxide was isolated and characterized by different spectroscopic methods. The extreme instability of PVACP was demonstrated by FTIR spectroscopy. The H-1- and C-13-NMR studies show the irregularities in the polyperoxide chain due to the cleavage reactions of the propagating peroxide radical. Thermal degradation studies using differential scanning calorimetry revealed that PVACP degrades at a lower temperature and the heat of degradation is in the same range as reported for other vinyl polyperoxides. A new hydroxy functionalized liquid crystalline (LC) polyazomethine has been synthesized by the solution polycondensation of a dialdehyde with a diamine. The polymer was characterized by IR, H-1-, and C-13-NMR spectroscopy. Studies on the liquid crystalline properties reveal the nematic mesomorphic behavior. This polymer functions as a polymeric chelate and forms a three-dimensional network structure through the metal complexation. Influence of various metals and their concentration on the liquid crystalline behavior of the network has been studied. Networks up to 30 mol % of the metal show LC phase transitions; above this the transitions are suppressed and the network behaves like an LC thermoset. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Full Paper: The copolyperoxides of various compositions of indene with methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate and butyl acrylate have been synthesized by the free-radical-initiated oxidative copolymerization. The compositions of copolyperoxide obtained from H-1 and C-13 NMR spectra have been used to determine the reactivity ratios of the monomers. The copolyperoxides contain a greater proportion of the indene units in random placement. The NMR studies have shown irregularities in the copolyperoxide chain due to the cleavage reactions of the propagating peroxide radical. The thermal analysis by differential scanning calorimetry suggests alternating peroxide units in the copolyperoxide chain. From the activation energy for the thermal degradation, it was inferred that degradation occurs via the dissociation of the peroxide (O-O) bonds of the copolyperoxide chain. The flexibility of the polyperoxides in terms of glass transition temperature (T-g) has also been examined.

The copolyperoxides of indene with methyl methacrylate and methacrylonitrile have been synthesized by the free-radical-initiated oxidative copolymerization of indene and the monomers. The compositions of copolyperoxides, obtained from H-1 and C-13 NMR spectra, have been utilized to determine the reactivity ratios. The reactivity ratios indicate that the copolyperoxides contain a large proportion of the indene units in random placement. Thermal degradation studies of the copolyperoxides by differential scanning calorimetry and electron-impact mass spectroscopy support alternating peroxide units in the copolyperoxide chain. The energy of activation for thermal degradation suggests that the degradation is controlled by the dissociation of the peroxide (-O-O-) bonds in the copolyperoxide chain. The flexibility of copolyperoxide in terms of glass transition temperature (T-g) has also been examined. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Benzoyl phenyl urea, a class of insect growth regulator's acts by inhibiting chitin synthesis. Carvacrol, a naturally occurring monoterpenoid is an effective antifungal agent. We have structurally modified carvacrol (2-methyl-5-1-methylethyl] phenol) by introducing benzoylphenyl urea linkage. Two series of benzoylcarvacryl thiourea (BCTU, 4a-f) and benzoylcarvacryl urea (BCU, 5a-f) derivatives were prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, H-1 and C-13 NMR and Mass spectroscopy. Derivatives 4b, 4d, 4e, 4f and 5d, 5f showed comparable insecticidal activity with the standard BPU lufenuron against Dysdercus koenigii. BCTU derivatives 4c, 4e and BCU 5c showed good antifungal activity against phytopathogenic fungi viz. Magnaporthe grisae, Fusarium oxysporum, Dreschlera oryzae; food spoilage yeasts viz. Debaromyces hansenii, Pichia membranifaciens; and human pathogens viz. Candida albicans and Cryptococcus neoformans. Compounds 5d, 5e and 5f showed potent activity against human pathogens. Moderate and selective activity was observed for other compounds. All the synthesized compounds were non-haemolytic. These compounds have potential application in agriculture and medicine. Two dinuclear copper(II) complexes Li(H2O)(3)(CH3OH)](4)Cu2Br4]Cu-2(cpdp)(mu-O2CCH3)](4)(OH)(2) (1), Cu (H2O)(4)]Cu-2(cpdp)(mu-O2CC6H5)](2)Cl-2 center dot 5H(2)O (2), and a dinuclear zinc(II) complex Zn-2(cpdp)(mu-O2CCH3)] (3) have been synthesized using pyridine and benzoate functionality based new symmetrical dinucleating ligand, N, N'-Bis2-carboxybenzomethyl]-N, N'-Bis2-pyridylmethyl]-1,3-diaminopropan-2-ol (H(3)cpdp). Complexes 1, 2 and 3 have been synthesized by carrying out reaction of the ligand H3cpdp with stoichiometric amounts of Cu-2(O2CCH3)(4)(H2O)(2)], CuCl2 center dot 2H(2)O/C6H5COONa, and Zn(CH3COO)(2)center dot 2H(2)O, respectively, in methanol in the presence of NaOH at ambient temperature. Characterizations of the complexes have been done using various analytical techniques including single crystal X-ray structure determination. The X-ray crystal structure analyses reveal that the copper(II) ions in complexes 1 and 2 are in a distorted square pyramidal geometry with Cu-Cu separation of 3.455(8) angstrom and 3.492(1)angstrom, respectively. The DFT optimized structure of complex 3 indicates that two zinc(II) ions are in a distorted square pyramidal geometry with Zn-Zn separation of 3.492(8)angstrom. UV-Vis and mass spectrometric analyses of the complexes confirm their dimeric nature in solution. Furthermore, H-1 and C-13 NMR spectroscopic investigations authenticate the integrity of complex 3 in solution. Variable-temperature (2-300 K) magnetic susceptibility measurements show the presence of antiferromagnetic interactions between the copper centers, with J = -26.0 cm(-1) and -23.9 cm(-1) ((H) over cap = -2JS(1)S(2)) in complexes 1 and 2, respectively. In addition, glycosidase-like activity of the complexes has been investigated in aqueous solution at pH similar to 10.5 by UV-Vis spectrophotometric technique using p-nitrophenyl-alpha-D-glucopyranoside (4) and p-nitrophenyl-beta-D-glucopyranoside (5) as model substrates. The omega(1)-heterodecoupled-C-13-filtered proton detected NMR experiments are reported for the accurate quantification of enantiomeric excess in chiral molecules embedded in chiral liquid crystal. The differential values of both H-1-H-1 and C-13-H-1 dipolar couplings in the direct dimension and only H-1-H-1 dipolar couplings in the indirect dimension enable unraveling of overlapped enantiomeric peaks. The creation of unequal C-13-bound proton signal for each enantiomer in the INEPT block and non-uniform excitation of coherences in homonuclear multiple quantum experiments do not yield accurate quantification of enantiomeric excess. In circumventing these difficulties, a coupling dependent intensity correction factor has been invoked. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

4-Alkoxy benzoic acids belong to an important class of thermotropic liquid crystals that are structurally simple and often used as starting materials for many novel mesogens. 4-Hexyloxybenzoic acid (HBA) is a homologue of the same series and exhibits an enantiotropic nematic phase. As this molecule could serve as an ideal model compound, high resolution C-13 NMR studies of HEA in solution, solid, and liquid crystalline phases have been undertaken. In the solid state, two-dimensional separation of undistorted powder patterns by effortless recoupling (2D SUPER) experiments have been carried out to estimate the magnitude of the components of the chemical shift anisotropy (GSA) tensor of all the aromatic carbons. These values have been used subsequently for calculating the orientational order parameters in the liquid crystalline phase. The GSA values computed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed good agreement with the 2D SUPER values. Additionally, C-13-H-1 dipolar couplings in the nematic phase have been determined by separated local field (SLF) spectroscopy at various temperatures and were used for computing the order parameters, which compared well with those calculated by using the chemical shifts. It is anticipated that the CSA values determined for MBA would be useful for the assignment of carbon chemical shifts and for the study of order and dynamics of structurally similar novel mesogens in their nematic phases.

Hydrogen bonding is the most important non-covalent interaction utilised in building supramolecular assemblies and is preferred often as a means of construction of molecular, oligomeric as well as polymeric materials that show liquid crystalline properties. In this work, a pyridine based nematogenic acceptor has been synthesized and mixed with non-mesogenic 4-methoxy benzoic acid to get a hydrogen bonded mesogen. The existence of hydrogen bonding between the pyridyl unit and the carboxylic acid was established using FT-IR spectroscopy from the observation of characteristic stretching vibrations of unionized type at 2425 and 1927 cm(-1). The mesogenic acceptor and the complex have been investigated using C-13 NMR in solution, solid and liquid crystalline states. Together with the 2D separated local field NMR experiments, the studies confirm the molecular structure in the mesophase and yield the local orientational order parameters. It is observed that the insertion of 4-methoxy benzoic acid not only enhances the mesophase stability but also induces a smectic phase due to an increase in the core length of the hydrogen bonded mesogen.
