We describe an investigation of (Ba3MMWO9)-M-II-W-IV oxides for M-II = Ca, Zn, and other divalent metals and M-IV = Ti, Zr. In general, a 1:2-ordered 6H (hexagonal, P6(3)/mmc) perovskite structure is stabilized at high temperatures (1300 degrees C) for all of the (Ba3MTiWO9)-Ti-II oxides investigated. An intermediate phase possessing a partially ordered 1:1 double perovskite (3C) structure with the cation distribution, Ba-2(Zn2/3Ti1/3)(W2/3Ti1/3)O-6, is obtained at 1200 degrees C for Ba3ZnTiWO9. Sr substitution for Ba in the latter stabilizes the cubic 3C structure instead of the 6H structure. A metastable Ba3CaZrWO9 that adopts the 3C (cubic, Fm (3) over barm) structure has also been synthesized by a low-temperature metathesis route. Besides yielding several new perovskite oxides that may be useful as dielectric ceramics, the present investigation provides new insights into the complex interplay of crystal chemistry (tolerance factor) and chemical bonding (anion polarization and d(0)-induced distortion of metal-oxygen octahedra) in the stabilization of 6H versus 3C perovskite structures for the (Ba3MMWO9)-M-II-W-IV series.

The insertion of phenyl isocyanate into titanium isopropoxide leads to the formation of a dimeric complex [Ti(O ' Pr)(2)(mu-O ' Pr){C6H5N(O ' Pr)CO}](2) (1) which has been structurally characterized. Reaction of titanium isopropoxide with two and more than 2 equiv. of phenyl isocyanate is complicated by competitive, reversible insertion between the titanium carbamate and titanium isopropoxide. The ligand formed by insertion of phenyl isocyanate into the titanium carbamate has been structurally characterized in its protonated form C6H5N{C(O ' Pr)O}C(O)N(H)C6H5 (3aH). Insertion into the carbamate is kinetically favored whereas insertion into isopropoxide gives the thermodynamically favored product. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Dinuclear ((VVV)-V-IV) oxophenoxovanadates of general formula [V2O3L] have been synthesized in excellent yields by reacting bis(acetylacetonato)oxovanadium(IV) with H3L in a 2:1 ratio in acetone under an N-2 atmosphere. Here L3- is the deprotonated form of 2,6-bis[{{(2-hydroxybenzyl)(N',N'-(dimethylamino)ethyl)}amino}methyl]-4-methylphenol (H3L1), 2,6-bis[{{(5-methyl-2-hydroxybenzyl)(N',N'-(dimethylamino)ethyl)}amino}methyl]-4-methylphenol (H3L2) 2,6-bis[ {{(5-tert-butyl-2-hydroxybenzyl)(N',N'-(dimethylamino)ethyl)}amino}methyl]-4-methylphenoI (H3L3), 2,6-bis[{{(5-chloro-2-hydroxybenzyl)(N',N'-(dimethylamino)ethyl)}amino}methyl]-4-methylphenol (H3L4) , 2,6-bis[{{(5-bromo-2-hydroxybenzyl)(N',N'-(dimethylamino)ethyl)}amino}methyl]-4-methylphenol (H3L5), or 2,6-bis[{{(5-methoxy-2-hydroxybenzyl)(N',N'-(dimethylamino)ethyl)}amino}methyl]-4-methylphenol (H3L6). In [V2O3L1], both the metal atoms have distorted octahedral geometry. The relative disposition of two terminal V=O groups in the complex is essentially cis. The O=V...V=O torsion angle is 24.6(2)degrees. The V-O-oxo-V and V-O-phenoxo-V angles are 117.5(4) and 93.4(3)degrees, respectively. The V...V bond distance is 3.173(5) Angstrom. X-ray crystallography, IR, UV-vis, and H-1 and V-51 NMR measurements show that the mixed-valence complexes contain two indistinguishable vanadium atoms (type 111). The thermal ellipsoids of O2, O4, C10, C14, and C15 also suggests a type III complex in the solid state. EPR spectra of solid complexes at 77 K display a single line indicating the localization of the odd electron (3d(xy)(1)). Valence localization at 77 K is also consistent with the V-51 hyperfine structure of the axial EPR spectra (3d(xy)(1) ground state) of the complexes in frozen (77 K) dichloromethane solution: S = 1/2, g(parallel to) similar to 1.94, g(perpendicular to) similar to 1.98, A(parallel to) similar to 166 x 10(-4) cm(-1), and A(perpendicular to) similar to 68 x 10(-4) cm(-1). In contrast isotropic room-temperature solution spectra of the family have 15 hyperfine lines (g(iso) similar to 1.974 and A(iso) similar to 50 x 10(-4) cm(-1)) revealing that the unpaired electron is delocalized between the metal centers. Crystal data for the [V2O3L1].CH2Cl2 complex are as follows: chemical formula, C32H43O6N4C12V2; crystal system, monoclinic; space group, C2/c; a = 18.461(4), b = 17.230(3), c = 13.700(3) Angstrom; beta = 117.88(3)degrees; Z = 8.

Antipyrine complexes of TiO2+, ZrO2+, Zr4+, Th4+ and UO2+2 perchlorates with molecular formulae TiO(Apy)4(ClO4)2, ZrO(Apy)3(ClO4)2, Zr(Apy)6(ClO4)4, Th(Apy)7(ClO4)4 and UO2(Apy)5(ClO4)2 have been prepared and characterized. The complexes are stable in air at room temperature and decompose exothermally at ~3OO °C. The i.r. study indicates the bonding of the antipyrine to the metal ion through its carbonyl oxygen. The nature of the bonding of the perchlorate and the stereochemistry of the complexes are discussed in the light of infrared spectra, conductivity in solvents of different polarity, and molecular weight measurements. From the UO2+2 group frequencies, the force constant K and rU-o are found to be 6.29 × 105 dynes/ cm-1 and 1.74 Å, respectively.

Nonconventional heptacoordination in combination with efficient magnetic exchange coupling is shown to yield a 1-D heteronuclear {(FeNbIV)-Nb-II} compound with remarkable magnetic features when compared to other Fe(II)-based single chain magnets (SCM). Cyano-bridged heterometallic {3d-4d} and {3d-5d} chains are formed upon assembling Fe(II) bearing a pentadentate macrocycle as the blocking ligand with octacyano metallates, [M(CN)(8)](4-) (M = Nb-IV, Mo-IV, W-IV.) X-ray diffraction (single-crystal and powder) measurements reveal that the [{(H2O)Fe(L-1)}{M(CN)(8)}{Fe(L-1)}](infinity) architectures consist of isomorphous 1-D polymeric structures based on the alternation of {Fe(L-1)}(2+) and {M(CN)(8)}(4-) units (L-1 stands for the pentadentate macrocycle). Analysis of the magnetic susceptibility behavior revealed cyano-bridged {Fe-Nb} exchange interaction to be antiferromagnetic with J = -20 cm(-1) deduced from fitting an Ising model taking into account the noncollinear spin arrangement. For this ferrimagnetic chain a slow relaxation of its magnetization is observed at low temperature revealing a SCM behavior with Delta/k(B) = 74 K and tau(0) = 4.6 x 10(-11) s. The M versus H behavior exhibits a hysteresis loop with a coercive field of 4 kOe at 1 K and reveals at 380 mK magnetic avalanche processes, i.e., abrupt reversals in magnetization as H is varied. The origin of these characteristics is attributed to the combination of efficient {Fe-Nb} exchange interaction and significant anisotropy of the {Fe(L-1)) unit. High field EPR and magnetization experiments have revealed for the parent compound [Fe(L-1)(H2O)(2)]Cl-2 a negative zero field splitting parameter of D approximate to -17 cm(-1). The crystal structure, magnetic behavior, and Mossbauer data for [Fe(L-1)(H2O)(2)]Cl-2 are also reported.

Oxovanadium(IV) complexes [VO(sal-argH)(B)] Cl (1-3) and [VO(sal-lysH)(B)] Cl (4-6), where sal-argH2 and sal-lysH(2) are N-salicylidene-L-arginine and N-salicylidene-L-lysine Schiff bases and B is a phenanthroline base, viz. 1,10-phenanthroline (phen in 1 and 4); dipyrido[3,2-d: 2', 3'-f] quinoxaline (dpq in 2 and 5) and dipyrido[3,2-a: 2', 3'-c] phenazine (dppz in 3 and 6), have been prepared, characterized and their DNA photocleavage activity studied. Complex 1, characterized by X-ray crystallography, shows the presence of a vanadyl group in VIVO3N3 coordination geometry with a tridentate Schiff base having a pendant guanidinium moiety and bidentate phen ligand. The complexes exhibit a d-d band at similar to 715 nm in 20% DMF-Tris-HCl buffer. The complexes are redox active showing cathodic and anodic responses near -1.0 V and 0.85 V (vs. SCE) for the V(IV)-V(III) and V(V)-V(IV) couples, respectively, in DMF-Tris-HCl buffer. The complexes bind to calf thymus DNA giving Kb values in the range of 3.8 x 10(4) to 1.6 x 10(5) M-1. Thermal denaturation and viscosity data suggest DNA groove binding nature of the complexes. The complexes do not show any `chemical nuclease'' activity in dark in the presence of 3-mercaptopropionic acid or H2O2. The dpq and dppz complexes are efficient photocleavers of plasmid DNA in UV-A (365 nm) and red light (676 nm) via singlet oxygen pathway. The dppz complexes exhibit photocytotoxicity in HeLa cancer cells giving IC50 values of 15.4 mu M for 3 and 17.5 mu M for 6 in visible light while being non-toxic in dark giving IC50 values of > 100 mu M.

Oxovanadium(IV) complexes VO(L)(B)] (1-3), where H2L is a Schiff base ligand 2-(2-hydroxybenzylideneamino) phenol and B is 1,10-phenanthroline (phen for 1), dipyrido3,2-d:2',3'-f]quinoxaline (dpq for 2) or dipyrido3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (dppz for 3), have been prepared, characterized and their DNA binding property and photo-induced DNA cleavage activity studied. Complex 3 which is structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography shows the presence of an oxovanadium(IV) moiety in a six coordinate VO3N3 coordination geometry. The complexes show a d-d band within 800-850 nm in DMF. The complexes display an oxidative response near 0.7 V versus SCE for V(V)-V(IV) and a reductive response within -1.1 to -1.3 V due to V(IV)-V(III) couple in DMF-0.1 M TBAP. The complexes are avid binders to calf thymus DNA giving binding constant values of 4.2 x 10(4) to 1.2 x 10(5) M (1). The complexes do not show any ``chemical nuclease'' activity in dark. The dpq and dppz complexes are photocleavers of plasmid DNA in UV-A light of 365 nm via O-1(2) pathway and in near-IR light (752.5 to 799.3 nm IR optics) by HO* pathway. Complex 3 exhibits significant photocytotoxicity in visible light in HeLa cells giving IC50 value of 13 mu M, while it is less toxic in dark (IC50 = 97 mu M). (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. The conformational properties of the protected seven-residue C-terminal fragment the lipopeptaibol antibiotic Trichogin A IV (Boc-Gly-Gly-Leu-Aib-Gly-Ile-Leu-OMe) has been examined in CDCl3 and (CD3)2SO by 1H-nmr. Evidence for a multiple β-turn conformation [type I′ at Gly(1)-Gly(2), type II at Leu(3)-Aib(4), and a type I′ at Aib(4)-Gly(5)] suggests that Leu(3) has preferred an extended or semiextended conformation over a helical conformation in CDCl3. This structure is thus in contrast to earlier observations of seven-residue peptides containing a single central Aib preferring helical conformations in both solution and crystalline slates. A structural transition to a frayed right-handed helix is absented in (CD3)2SO. These results suggest that nonhelical conformations may be important in Gly-rich peptides containing Aib. Further, the presence of amino acids with contradictory influences on backbone conformational freedom can lead to well-defined conformational transitions even in small peptides

Reactions of [PdIVB-(AI)2]++ [PdIICl4]-- (i) B-(AI)2 = dianion of N,N'-ethylene-/i-propylene-/n-propylene-bis(acetyl-acetoneimine) with some π-acceptor ligands, aliphatic primary amines and nitrosating reagents have been investigated. In all these reactions except nitrosation, 1:1 adducts having the formula, [PdIVB-(AI)2.X] [PdIICl4] [X = triphenylphosphine (TPP), triphenylarsine (TPA), pyridine (Py), methylamine (CH3NH2) or ethylamine (C2H5NH2)] are obtained. The formation of these complexes is associated with a bond isomerization - from Pd-Cxo-π -allylic bond prevailing in [PdIVB-(AI)2]2+ to PdIV-O bonding.Reaction of (i) with nitrosating reagents reduces PdIV to PdII and subsequently transform the γ-CH group, into an ambidentate isonitroso group (°C = NOH). The latter enters into coordination with PdII by dislodging the already coordinated carbonyl group. Further, selective nitrosation (mono- and dinitrosation) has been carried out by controlling the amount of the nitrosating reagent and the reaction time. The complexes have been characterized by elemental analyses, electrical conductivity, magnetic susceptibility and ir spectral data.

The complexes exhibit an irreversible V-IV/V-III redox response near -1.0 V vs. SCE in aqueous DMF/0.1 M KCl. The complexes bind to CT DNA giving K-b values within 3.5 x 10(5) to 1.2 x 10(6) M-1. The complexes show poor chemical nuclease activity in dark. Complexes 2-4 show photonuclease activity in UV-A light of 365 nm forming O-1(2) and (OH)-O-center dot. Complex 4 shows DNA photocleavage activity at near-IR light of 785 nm forming (OH)-O-center dot radicals. Complexes 2 and 4 show significant photocytotoxicity in HeLa cancer cells. Uptake of the complexes in HeLa cells, studied by fluorescence imaging, show predominantly cytosolic localization inside the cells.

Barium metazirconate (BaZrO3) fine powder has been produced by thermally decomposing a molecular precursor, barium bis(citrato)oxozirconate(IV) tetrahydrate at about 700-degrees-C. The precursor, Ba[ZrO(C6H6O7)2] . 4H2O (BZO) has been synthesized and characterized by employing a combination of spectroscopic and thermoanalytical techniques. The precursor undergoes thermal decomposition in three major stages: (i) dehydration to give an anhydrous barium zirconyl citrate, (ii) decomposition of the anhydrous citrate in a multistep process to form an ionic oxycarbonate intermediate, Ba2Zr2O5CO3, and (iii) decomposition of the oxycarbonate to produce BaZrO3 fine powder. The particle size of the resultant BaZrO3 is about 0.2 mum, and the surface area is found to be 4.0 m2 g-1.

Reaction of 1-methoxynaphthalene with 1-formylnaphthalene in presence of n-BuLi/TMEDA, followed by deoxygenation and demethylation gave the bisnaphthol 6. Oxidation of 6 with KOBr yielded the spironaphthalenones 4a-b and 5a-b. The spironaphthalenones 3a-c on reaction with NH2OH.HCl gave naphth[2,1-c]isoxazole derivatives 9a-c. While similar reaction of 4a-b gave the pyrrolotropones 11a-b, spironaphthalenones 5a-b afforded the naphth[1,2-c]isoxazole derivatives 12a-b.

Nanosized powders of TiO2 (anatase) were prepared by the hydrothermal method, acid-medium hydrolysis or by vacuum freeze-drying of sols, and annealing at temperatures <700-degrees-C. Photocatalytic activities of these powders in the mineralization of phenol, were evaluated in comparison to that of Degussa P25. Kinetic data indicated that surface hydroxylation had a retarding effect on the degradation of phenol. Formation of stable peroxotitanium species were observed on hydroxylated powders, whereas only V(Ti)-O- hole trap centres were detected by EPR on the heat treated samples. The data supports direct hole oxidation of the substrate preadsorbed on the photocatalyst, which is otherwise blocked by surface hydroxyls.
