A TEM study of the interphase boundary structure of 9R orthorhombic alpha1' martensite formed in beta' Cu---Zn alloys shows that it consists of a single array of dislocations with Burgers vector parallel to left angle bracket110right-pointing angle beta and spaced about 3.5 nm apart. This Burgers vector lies out of the interface plane; hence the interface dislocations are glissile. Unexpectedly, though, the Burgers vectors of these dislocations are not parallel when referenced to the matrix and the martensite lattices. This finding is rationalized on published hard sphere models as a consequence of relaxation of a resultant of the Bain strain and lattice invariant shear displacements within the matrix phase.

New glasses of 16.66SrO–16.66[(1 − x)Bi2O3–xSm2O3]–16.66Nb2O5–50Li2B4O7 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.5, in molar ratio), i.e., the pseudo-binary Sm2O3-doped SrBi2Nb2O9–Li2B4O7 glass system, giving the crystallization of Sm3+-doped SrBi2Nb2O9 nanocrystals are developed. It is found that the thermal stability of the glasses against the crystallization and the optical band gap energy increases with increasing Sm2O3 content. The formation of fluorite-type Sm3+-doped SrBi2Nb2O9 nanocrystals (diameters: 13–37 nm) with a cubic structure is confirmed in the crystallized (530 °C, 3 h) samples from X-ray powder diffraction analyses, Raman scattering spectrum measurements, and transmission electron microscope observations. The effect of Sm3+-doping on the microstructure, Raman scattering peak positions, and dielectric properties of composites comprising of fluorite-type SrBi2Nb2O9 nanocrystals and the Li2B4O7 glassy phase is clarified. It is found that fluorite-type SrBi2Nb2O9 nanocrystals transform to stable perovskite-type SrBi2Nb2O9 crystals with an orthorhombic structure by heat treatments at around 630 °C.

We report the synthesis and structural characterization of ferroelectric bismuth vanadate (Bi2VO5.5) (BVO) nanotubes within the nanoporous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) templates via sol-gel method. The as-prepared BVO nanotubes were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscope (HRTEM) and the stoichiometry of the nanotubes was established by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Postannealed (675 degrees C for 1 h), BVO nanotubes were a polycrystalline and the XRD studies confirmed the crystal structure to be orthorhombic. The uniformity in diameter and length of the nanotubes as reveled by the TEM and SEM suggested that these were influenced to a guest extent by the thickness and pore diameter of the nanoporous AAO template. EDX analysis demonstrated the formation of stoichiometric Bi2VO5.5 phase. HRTEM confirmed that the obtained BVO nanotubes were made up of nanoparticles of 5-9 nm range. The possible formation mechanism of nanotubes was elucidated.

The coat protein gene of physalis mottle tymovirus (PhMV) was over expressed in Escherichia coli using pET-3d vector. The recombinant protein was found to self assemble into capsids in vivo. The purified recombinant capsids had an apparent s value of 56.5 S and a diameter of 29(±2) nm. In order to establish the role of amino and carboxy-terminal regions in capsid assembly, two amino-terminal deletions clones lacking the first 11 and 26 amino acid residues and two carboxy-terminal deletions lacking the last five and ten amino acid residues were constructed and overexpressed. The proteins lacking N-terminal 11 (PhCPN1) and 26 (PhCPN2) amino acid residues self assembled into T = 3 capsids in vivo, as evident from electron microscopy, ultracentrifugation and agarose gel electrophoresis. The recombinant, PhCPN1 and PhCPN2 capsids were as stable as the empty capsids formed in vivo and encapsidated a small amount of mRNA. The monoclonal antibody PA3B2, which recognizes the epitope within region 22 to 36, failed to react with PhCPN2 capsids while it recognized the recombinant and PhCPN1 capsids. Disassembly of the capsids upon treatment with urea showed that PhCPN2 capsids were most stable. These results demonstrate that the N-terminal 26 amino acid residues are not essential for T = 3 capsid assembly in PhMV. In contrast, both the proteins lacking the C-terminal five and ten amino acid residues were present only in the insoluble fraction and could not assemble into capsids, suggesting that these residues are crucial for folding and assembly of the particles.

In Ge-As-Te system, the glass forming region determined by normal melt quenching method has two regions (GFR I and GFR II) separated by few compositions gap. With a simple laboratory built twin roller apparatus, we have succeeded in preparing Ge7.5AsxTe92.5-x glasses over extended composition ranges. A distinct change in T-g is observed at x = 40, exactly at which the separation of the glass forming regions occur indicating the changes in the connectivity and the rigidity of the structural network. The maximum observed in glass transition (T-g) at x = 55 corresponding to the average coordination number (Z(av)) = 2.70 is an evidence for the shift of the rigidity percolation threshold (RPT) from Z(av) = 2.40 as predicted by the recent theories. The glass forming tendency (K-gl) and Delta T (=T-c-T-g) is low for the glasses in the GFR I and high for the glasses in the GFR II.

Based on the measurements of Alcock and Zador, Grundy et al. estimated an uncertainty of the order of +/- 5 kJ mol(-1) for the standard Gibbs energy of formation of MnO in a recent assessment. Since the evaluation of thermodynamic data for the higher oxides Mn3O4, Mn2O3, and MnO2 depends on values for MnO, a redetermination of its Gibbs energy of formation was undertaken in the temperature range from 875 to 1300 K using a solid-state electrochemical cell incorporating yttria-doped thoria (YDT) as the solid electrolyte and Fe + Fe1-delta O as the reference electrode. The cell can be presented as Pt, Mn + MnO/YDT/Fe + Fe1+delta O, Pt Since the metals Fe and Mn undergo phase transitions in the temperature range of measurement, the reversible emf of the cell is represented by the three linear segments. Combining the emf with the oxygen potential for the reference electrode, the standard Gibbs energy of formation of MnO from alpha-Mn and gaseous diatomic oxygen in the temperature range from 875 to 980 K is obtained as: Delta G(f)(o)/Jmol(-1)(+/- 250) = -385624 + 73.071T From 980 to 1300 K the Gibbs energy of formation of MnO from beta-Mn and oxygen gas is given by: Delta G(f)(o)/Jmol(-1)(+/- 250) = -387850 + 75.36T The new data are in excellent agreement with the earlier measurements of Alcock and Zador. Grundy et al. incorrectly analyzed the data of Alcock and Zador showing relatively large difference (+/- 5 kJ mol(-1)) in Gibbs energies of MnO from their two cells with Fe + Fe1-delta O and Ni + NiO as reference electrodes. Thermodynamic data for MnO is reassessed in the light of the new measurements. A table of refined thermodynamic data for MnO from 298.15 to 2000 K is presented.

Formation of high value procurement networks involves a bottom-up assembly of complex production, assembly, and exchange relationships through supplier selection and contracting decisions, where suppliers are intelligent and rational agents who act strategically. In this paper we address the problem of forming procurement networks for items with value adding stages that are linearly arranged We model the problem of Procurement Network Formation (PNF) for multiple units of a single item as a cooperative game where agents cooperate to form a surplus maximizing procurement network and then share the surplus in a stable and fair manner We first investigate the stability of such networks by examining the conditions under which the core of the game is non-empty. We then present a protocol, based on the extensive form game realization of the core, for forming such networks so that the resulting network is stable. We also mention a key result when the Shapley value is applied as a solution concept.

The treatment of [M(dppf)(H2O)2](OTf)2 (dppf =1,1′-bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene; M = Pd, Pt) with 1 equiv of disodium fumarate in methanol medium showed an unusual hydrogenation of the ethylenic bond followed by the formation of metallochelates linking M through one of the carboxylates and the β-carbon with respect to COO−. Despite the possibility of formation of a [2 + 2] or [4 + 4] self-assembled macrocycle, the reduction of fumarate to succinate, and in particular the linking through the β-carbon, is unique since a similar treatment using disodium succinate instead of disodium fumarate yielded an expected metallochelate where both the carboxylates were coordinated to the square-planar metal.

Peptide disulfides are unstable under alkaline conditions, resulting in the formation of products containing lanthionine and polysulfied linkages. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry has been used to characterize major species obtained when cyclic and acyclic peptide disulfides are exposed to alkaline media. Studies on a model cyclic peptide disulfide (Boc - Cys - Pro - Leu - Cys - NHMe) and an acyclic peptide, oxidized glutathione, bis ((gamma)Glu Cys - Gly - COOH), are described. Disulfide cleavage reactions are initiated by the abstraction of (CH)-H-alpha or (CH)-H-beta protons of Cys residues, with Subsequent elimination of H2S or H2S2. The buildup of reactive thiol species which act on intermediates containing dehydroalanine residues, rationalizes the formation of lanthionine and polysulfide products. In the case of the cyclic peptide disulfide, the formation of cyclic products is facilitated by the intramolecular nature of the Michael addition reaction of thiols to the dehydroalanine residue. Mass spectral evidence for the intermediate species is presented by using alkylation of thiol groups as a trapping method. Mass spectral fragmentation in the negative ion mode of the peptides derived from trisulfides and tetrasulfides results in elimination of S-2. Biosynthesis of valine and isoleucine in plants I. Formation of α-acetolactate in Phaseolus radiatus
Resumo:
1. 1. The presence of an enzyme system in plants catalyzing the formation of α-acetolactate from pyruvate has been demonstrated; the system in green gram (Phaseolus radiatus) has been partially purified and its characteristics have been studied.2. Free acetaldehyde is formed as a product of the reaction and so the reaction is mainly diverted towards the formation of acetoin. 3. The system requires thiamine pyrophosphate and a divalent metal ion (Mn2+ or Mg2+) for maximum activity. The optimum pH is around 6.0 and the optimum temperature is 60°. 4. The system is very labile in absence of pyruvate, Mn2+ and DPT. 5. The Km values for pyruvate, Mn2+, Mg2+ and DPT are 3·10−2 M. 5·10−5 M, 2·10−5 M, and e·10−6 M respectively. The activation energy is 3540 cal/mole. 6. The enzyme is strongly inhibited by p-chloromercuribenzoate and the inhibition can be reversed partially by 2-mercaptoethanol, BAL or cysteine. Heavy metals, such as Hg2+ and Ag+, are inhibitory but l-valine does not inhibit the reaction.

Polarographic and redox potential measurements on the cupric and cuprous complexes of ethylenediamine and EDTA have been carried out. From the ratio of the stability constants of the cupric and cuprous complexes, and the stability constant of the cupric complex, the stability constant of the cuprous-ethylenediamine complex is obtained. In the case of the EDTA complex it has been possible to obtain only βic/β2ous from the equilibrium concentrations of the cuprous and cupric complexes and the disproportionation constant. The inequalities for the appearance of step reduction waves have been given. The values of the stability constants of the cupric and cuprous complexes determined by the polarographic-redox potential method have been used to explain the appearance of step reduction waves in some systems and the non-appearance in other systems.

Surface topography has been known to play an important role in the friction and transfer layer formation during sliding. In the present investigation, EN8 steel flats were ground to attain different surface roughness with unidirectional grinding marks. Pure Mg pins were scratched on these surfaces using an Inclined Scratch Tester to study the influence of directionality of surface grinding marks on coefficient of friction and transfer layer formation. Grinding angle (i.e., the angle between direction of scratch and grinding marks) was varied between 0 degrees and 90 degrees during the tests. Experiments were conducted under both dry and lubricated conditions. Scanning electron micrographs of the contact surfaces of pins and flats were used to reveal the surface features that included the morphology of the transfer layer. It was observed that the average coefficient of friction and transfer layer formation depend primarily on the directionality of the grinding marks but were independent of surface roughness on the harder mating surface. In addition, a stick-slip phenomenon was observed, the amplitude of which depended both on the directionality of grinding marks and the surface roughness of the harder mating surface. The grinding angle effect on the coefficient of friction, which consists of adhesion and plowing components, was attributed to the variation of plowing component of friction. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. A new soft-chemical transformation of layered perovskite oxides is described wherein K2O is sequentially extracted from the Ruddlesden-Popper (R-P) phase, K2La2Ti3O10 (I), yielding novel anion-deficient KLa2Ti3O9.5 (II) and La2Ti3O9 (III). The transformation occurs in topochemical reactions of the R-P phase I with PPh4Br and PBu4Br (Ph = phenyl; Bu = n-butyl). The mechanism involves the elimination of KBr accompanied by decomposition of PR4+ (R = phenyl or n-butyl) that extracts oxygen from the titanate. Analysis of the organic products of decomposition reveals formation of Ph3PO, Ph3P, and Ph-Ph for R = phenyl, and Bu3PO, Bu3P along with butane, butene, and octane for R = butyl. The inorganic oxides II and III crystallize in tetragonal structures (II: P4/mmm, a = 3.8335(1) angstrom, c = 14.334(1) angstrom; III: /4/ mmm, a = 3.8565(2) angstrom, c = 24.645(2) angstrom) that are related to the parent R-P phase. II is isotypic with the Dion-Jacobson phase, RbSr2Nb3O10, while III is a unique layered oxide consisting of charge-neutral La2Ti3O9 anion-deficient perovskite sheets stacked one over the other without interlayer cations. Interestingly, both II and III convert back to the parent R-P phase in a reaction with KNO3. While transformations of the R-P phases to other related layered/three-dimensional perovskite oxides in ion-exchange/metathesis/dehydration/reduction reactions are known, the simultaneous and reversible extraction of both cations and anions in the conversions K2La2Ti3O10 reversible arrow KLa2Ti3O9.5 reversible arrow La2Ti3O9 is reported here for the first time.
