A model for total cross-sections incorporating QCD jet cross-sections and soft gluon resummation is described and compared with present data on pp and pp cross-sections. Predictions for LHC are presented for different parameter sets. It is shown that they differ according to the small x-behaviour of available parton density functions.

We study the total inelastic gamma gamma cross-section and discuss predictions from different models, with a special attention to their dependence on the input parameters. In particular we examine the results from a simple extension of the Regge Pomeron exchange model and those from the eikonalized mini-jet model. We then compare both of them with recent LEP data.

We describe our kt-resummation model for total cross-sections and show its application to pp and ¯pp scattering. The model uses mini-jets to drive the rise of the cross-section and soft gluon resummation in the infrared region to transform the violent rise of the mini-jet cross-section into a logarithmic behaviour in agreement with the Froissart bound.

The electrical and optical properties of the thermally induced quenched-in levels in p-silicon which have heen attributed to iron are studied. The two levels, HI and H2, are located at Ev + 0.42 eV and Ev + 0.52 eV, respectively, as determined by TSCAP, DLTS, and transient photocapacitance methods. The photoionization cross sections are well described by Lucovsky's model. The hole capture by H1 is temperature dependent; a barrier of 40 meV is measured. However, multiphonon emission mechanism cannot be invoked to explain this temperature dependence due to the inferred zero lattice relaxation. The source of iron contamination is found to be the ambient conditions, in particular the quartz tube. The conflicting reports regarding the stability and the variation in the reported capture cross section values suggests that the observed Ev + 0.4 eV level must be a complex centre. The inferred near zero lattice relaxation during the electron transition implies weak coupling to the host lattice.

We have used the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method to study the linear and nonlinear optical responses of first generation nitrogen based dendrimers with donor acceptor groups. We have employed Pariser–Parr–Pople Hamiltonian to model the interacting pi electrons in these systems. Within the DMRG method we have used an innovative scheme to target excited states with large transition dipole to the ground state. This method reproduces exact optical gaps and polarization in systems where exact diagonalization of the Hamiltonian is possible. We have used a correction vector method which tacitly takes into account the contribution of all excited states, to obtain the ground state polarizibility, first hyperpolarizibility, and two photon absorption cross sections. We find that the lowest optical excitations as well as the lowest excited triplet states are localized. It is interesting to note that the first hyperpolarizibility saturates more rapidly with system size compared to linear polarizibility unlike that of linear polyenes.

Relative abundance distributions of multiply-charged ionic species have been measured for the RF spark and vacuum vibrator are ion sources, for a number of elements. An attempt has been made to explain the observed charge state distribution on the basis of models for the arc and spark plasma. The difficulties in the way of explaining the observed charge state distributions, using the LTE model with Saha distribution as well as the corona model, are pointed out. The distribution can be explained by a diffusion-dominated plasma model with known or calculated values for ionization cross-sections, the single impact model being suitable for the RF spark and the multiple impact model for the vibrator arc.

We study the properties of walls of marginal stability for BPS decays in a class of N = 2 theories. These theories arise in N = 2 string compactifications obtained as freely acting orbifolds of N = 4 theories, such theories include the STU model and the FHSV model. The cross sections of these walls for a generic decay in the axion-dilaton plane reduce to lines or circles. From the continuity properties of walls of marginal stability we show that central charges of BPS states do not vanish in the interior of the moduli space. Given a charge vector of a BPS state corresponding to a large black hole in these theories, we show that all walls of marginal stability intersect at the same point in the lower half of the axion-dilaton plane. We isolate a class of decays whose walls of marginal stability always lie in a region bounded by walls formed by decays to small black holes. This enables us to isolate a region in moduli space for which no decays occur within this class. We then study entropy enigma decays for such models and show that for generic values of the moduli, that is when moduli are of order one compared to the charges, entropy enigma decays do not occur in these models.

We investigate a version of noncommutative QED where the interaction term, although natural, breaks the spin-statistics connection. We calculate e(-) + e(-) -> e(-) + e(-) and gamma + e(-) -> gamma + e(-) cross-sections in the tree approximation and explicitly display their dependence on theta(mu nu). Remarkably the zero of the elastic e(-) + e(-) -> e(-) + e(-) cross-section at 90 degrees in the center-of-mass system, which is due to Pauli principle, is shifted away as a function of theta(mu nu) and energy.

We study soft gluon k(t)-resurnmation and the relevance of InfraRed (IR) gluons for the energy dependence of total hadronic cross-sections. In our model, consistency with the Froissart bound is directly related to the ansatz that the IR behaviour of the QCD coupling constant follows an inverse power law.

The polarization position-angle swings that have been measured in a number of BL Lacertae objects and highly variable quasars are interpreted in terms of shock waves which illuminate (by enhanced synchrotron radiation) successive transverse cross sections of a magnetized, relativistic jet. The jet is assumed to have a nonaxisymmetric magnetic field configuration of the type discussed in the companion paper on the equilibria of force-free jets. For a jet that is viewed at a small angle to the axis, the passage of a shock will give rise to an apparent rotation of the polarization position angle whose amplitude can be substantially larger than 180 deg. The effects of freely propagating shocks are compared with those of bow shocks which form in front of dense obstacles in the jet, and specific applications to 0727 - 115 and BL Lacertae are considered. In the case of 0727 - 115, it is pointed out that the nonuniformity of the swing rate and the apparent oscillations of the degree of polarization could be a consequence of relativistic aberration.

Spectral properties of Nd3+ and Dy3+ ions in different phosphate glasses were studied and several spectroscopic parameters were reported. Covalency of rare-earth-oxygen bond was studied in these phosphate glass matrices with the variation of modifier in host glass matrix Using Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters (Omega(2), Omega(4) and Omega(6)), radiative transition probabilities (A) and radiative lifetimes (tau(R)) of certain excited states of Nd3+ and Dy3+ ions are estimated in these glass matrices. From the magnitudes of branching ratios (beta(R)) and integrated absorption cross-sections (Sigma), certain transitions of both the ions are identified for laser excitation. From the emission spectra, peak stimulated emission cross-sections (sigma(P)) are evaluated for the emission transitions observed in all these phosphate glass matrices for both Nd3+ and Dy3+ ions. The role of cobalt centers in promoting the recombination and trapping processes in n-type germanium has been investigated. Data on lifetime measurements carried out by the steadystate photoconductivity and photo-magneto-electric methods in the temperature range 145 to 300°K on n-type germanium samples containing cobalt in the concentration range 1·1013 to 5.·014/cm3 are presented. The results are analysed on the basis of Sah-Shockley's multi-level formula to yield the capture cross-sections Sp= (hole capture cross-section at doubly negatively charged center) and Sn-(electron capture cross-section at singly negatively charged center) and temperature dependence. It is found that Sp= is (22 ± 6). 10-16 cm2 and Sn- is ∼ 0·1. 10-16 cm2 at 145°K. Sp= varies (n = 3·5 to 4·5) in the range 145-220°K; above 225°K the index 'n' tends to a smaller value. Sn- is practically temperature independent below 180°K and increases with increase of temperature above 180°K. The value of Sp= and its temperature variation lead one to the conclusion that during capture at attractive centers, the phonon cascade mechanism is responsible for the dissipation of the recombination energy.

The recombination properties of cobalt centers in p-type germanium containing cobalt in the concentration range 1014 to 1016 atoms/cm3 have been investigated. The measurement of lifetime has been carried out by steady-state photoconductivity and photo-magneto-electric methods in the temperature range 145 to 300°K. The cross-sections Sno (electron capture cross-section at neutral centers). Sn- (electron capture cross-section at singly negatively charged centers) and their temperature variations have been estimated by the analysis of the lifetime data on the basis of Sah-Shockley's multi-level formula. The value of Sno is (15±5).10-16 cm2 and is temperature independent. The value of Sn- is ≈4·10-16 cm2 around 225°K and it increases with increase of temperature. The possible mechanisms for capture at neutral and repulsive centers are discussed and a summary of the capture cross-sections for cobalt centers is given. A comparison of the cross-section values of cobalt and their temperature variations with those of the related impurities-manganese, iron and nickel-in germanium has been made.

This article presents the optical absorption and emission properties of Pr3+ and Nd3+ doped two different mixed alkali chloroborate glass matrices of the type 70B(2)O(3)center dot xLiCl center dot(30 - x)NaCl and 70B(2)O(3)center dot xLiCl center dot(30 - x)KCl (x = 5, 10, 15.20 and 25). The variation of Judd-Ofelt parameters (Omega(2), Omega(4) and Omega(6)), total radiative transition probabilities (A(T)), radiative lifetimes (tau(R)) and emission cross-sections (sigma(p)) with the variation of alkali contents in the glass matrix have been discussed in detail. The changes in the peak wavelengths of the hypersensitive transition and intensity parameters with x are correlated to the structural changes in the host matrix. The estimated radiative lifetimes of certain excited states of Pr3+ and Nd3+ in these two glass matrices are reported. Peak stimulated emission cross-sections (sigma(p)) are reported for the observed emission transitions of Pr3+ and Nd3+ ions. Branching ratios (beta) of the observed emission transitions obtained from the Judd-Ofelt theory are compared with the values obtained from the emission spectra. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. We consider the possibility of fingerprinting the presence of heavy additional Z' bosons that arise naturally in extensions of the standard model such as E-6 models and left-right symmetric models, through their mixing with the standard model Z boson. By considering a class of observables including total cross sections, energy distributions and angular distributions of decay leptons we find significant deviation from the standard model predictions for these quantities with right-handed electrons and left-handed positrons at root s= 800GeV. The deviations being less pronounced at smaller centre of mass energies as the models are already tightly constrained. Our work suggests that the ILC should have a strong beam polarization physics program particularly with these configurations. On the other hand, a forward backward asymmetry and lepton fraction in the backward direction are more sensitive to new physics with realistic polarization due to interesting interplay with the neutrino t-channel diagram. This process complements the study of fermion pair production processes that have been considered for discrimination between these models.
