Bluetooth is a short-range radio technology operating in the unlicensed industrial-scientific-medical (ISM) band at 2.45 GHz. A piconet is basically a collection of slaves controlled by a master. A scatternet, on the other hand, is established by linking several piconets together in an ad hoc fashion to yield a global wireless ad hoc network. This paper proposes a scheduling policy that aims to achieve increased system throughput and reduced packet delays while providing reasonably good fairness among all traffic flows in bluetooth piconets and scatternets. We propose a novel algorithm for scheduling slots to slaves for both piconets and scatternets using multi-layered parameterized policies. Our scheduling scheme works with real data and obtains an optimal feedback policy within prescribed parameterized classes of these by using an efficient two-timescale simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation (SPSA) algorithm. We show the convergence of our algorithm to an optimal multi-layered policy. We also propose novel polling schemes for intra- and inter-piconet scheduling that are seen to perform well. We present an extensive set of simulation results and performance comparisons with existing scheduling algorithms. Our results indicate that our proposed scheduling algorithm performs better overall on a wide range of experiments over the existing algorithms for both piconets (Das et al. in INFOCOM, pp. 591–600, 2001; Lapeyrie and Turletti in INFOCOM conference proceedings, San Francisco, US, 2003; Shreedhar and Varghese in SIGCOMM, pp. 231–242, 1995) and scatternets (Har-Shai et al. in OPNETWORK, 2002; Saha and Matsumot in AICT/ICIW, 2006; Tan and Guttag in The 27th annual IEEE conference on local computer networks(LCN). Tampa, 2002). Our studies also confirm that our proposed scheme achieves a high throughput and low packet delays with reasonable fairness among all the connections.

It is well known that the numerical accuracy of a series solution to a boundary-value problem by the direct method depends on the technique of approximate satisfaction of the boundary conditions and on the stage of truncation of the series. On the other hand, it does not appear to be generally recognized that, when the boundary conditions can be described in alternative equivalent forms, the convergence of the solution is significantly affected by the actual form in which they are stated. The importance of the last aspect is studied for three different techniques of computing the deflections of simply supported regular polygonal plates under uniform pressure. It is also shown that it is sometimes possible to modify the technique of analysis to make the accuracy independent of the description of the boundary conditions.

The error introduced in depolarisation measurements due to the convergence of the incident beam has been investigated theoretically as well as experimentally for the case of colloid scattering, where the particles are not small compared to the wavelength of light. Assuming the scattering particles to be anisotropic rods, it is shown that, when the incident unpolarised light is condensed by means of a lens with a circular aperture, the observed depolarisation ratio ϱ u is given by ϱ u = ϱ u0 + 5/3 θ2 where ϱ u0 is the true depolarisation for incident parallel light, and θ the semi-angle of convergence. Appropriate formulae are derived when the incident beam is polarised vertically and horizontally. Experiments performed on six typical colloids support the theoretical conclusions. Other immediate consequences of the theory are also discussed.

The role of convergence feedback on the stability of a coupled ocean‐atmosphere system is studied using model III of Hirst (1986). It is shown that the unstable coupled mode found by Hirst is greatly modified by the convergence feedback. If the convergence feedback strength exceeds a critical value, several new unstable intraseasonal modes are also introduced. These modes have very weak dependence on the wave number. These results may explain the behaviour of some coupled models and to some extent provide a mechanism for the observed aperiodicity of the El‐Nino and Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events.

In this paper we study representation of KL-divergence minimization, in the cases where integer sufficient statistics exists, using tools from polynomial algebra. We show that the estimation of parametric statistical models in this case can be transformed to solving a system of polynomial equations. In particular, we also study the case of Kullback-Csiszar iteration scheme. We present implicit descriptions of these models and show that implicitization preserves specialization of prior distribution. This result leads us to a Grobner bases method to compute an implicit representation of minimum KL-divergence models.

In this paper, we study the Foschini Miljanic algorithm, which was originally proposed in a static channel environment. We investigate the algorithm in a random channel environment, study its convergence properties and apply the Gerschgorin theorem to derive sufficient conditions for the convergence of the algorithm. We apply the Foschini and Miljanic algorithm to cellular networks and derive sufficient conditions for the convergence of the algorithm in distribution and validate the results with simulations. In cellular networks, the conditions which ensure convergence in distribution can be easily verified.

The complete amino-acid sequence of sheep liver cytosolic serine hydroxymethyltransferase was determined from an analysis of tryptic, chymotryptic, CNBr and hydroxylamine peptides. Each subunit of sheep liver serine hydroxymethyltransferase consisted of 483 amino-acid residues. A comparison of this sequence with 8 other serine hydroxymethyltransferases revealed that a possible gene duplication event could have occurred after the divergence of animals and fungi. This analysis also showed independent duplication of SHMT genes in Neurospora crassa. At the secondary structural level, all the serine hydroxymethyltransferases belong to the alpha/beta category of proteins. The predicted secondary structure of sheep liver serine hydroxymethyltransferase was similar to that of the observed structure of tryptophan synthase, another pyridoxal 5'-phosphate containing enzyme, suggesting that sheep liver serine hydroxymethyltransferase might have a similar pyridoxal 5'-phosphate binding domain. In addition, a conserved glycine rich region, G L Q G G P, was identified in all the serine hydroxymethyltransferases and could be important in pyridoxal 5'-phosphate binding. A comparison of the cytosolic serine hydroxymethyltransferases from rabbit and sheep liver with other proteins sequenced from both these sources showed that serine hydroxymethyltransferase was a highly conserved protein. It was slightly less conserved than cytochrome c but better conserved than myoglobin, both of which are well known evolutionary markers. C67 and C203 were specifically protected by pyridoxal 5'-phosphate against modification with [C-14]iodoacetic acid, while C247 and C261 were buried in the native serine hydroxymethyltransferase. However, the cysteines are not conserved among the various serine hydroxymethyltransferases. The exact role of the cysteines in the reaction catalyzed by serine hydroxymethyltransferase remains to be elucidated.

By using the strain smoothing technique proposed by Chen et al. (Comput. Mech. 2000; 25: 137-156) for meshless methods in the context of the finite element method (FEM), Liu et al. (Comput. Mech. 2007; 39(6): 859-877) developed the Smoothed FEM (SFEM). Although the SFEM is not yet well understood mathematically, numerical experiments point to potentially useful features of this particularly simple modification of the FEM. To date, the SFEM has only been investigated for bilinear and Wachspress approximations and is limited to linear reproducing conditions. The goal of this paper is to extend the strain smoothing to higher order elements and to investigate numerically in which condition strain smoothing is beneficial to accuracy and convergence of enriched finite element approximations. We focus on three widely used enrichment schemes, namely: (a) weak discontinuities; (b) strong discontinuities; (c) near-tip linear elastic fracture mechanics functions. The main conclusion is that strain smoothing in enriched approximation is only beneficial when the enrichment functions are polynomial (cases (a) and (b)), but that non-polynomial enrichment of type (c) lead to inferior methods compared to the standard enriched FEM (e.g. XFEM). Solution of generalized eigenproblem, K phi = lambda M phi, by the classical inverse iteration method exhibits slow convergence for some eigenproblems. In this paper, a modified inverse iteration algorithm is presented for improving the convergence rate. At every iteration, an optimal linear combination of the latest and the preceding iteration vectors is used as the input vector for the next iteration. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated for three typical eigenproblems, i.e. eigenproblems with distinct, close and repeated eigenvalues. The algorithm yields 29, 96 and 23% savings in computational time, respectively, for these problems. The algorithm is simple and easy to implement, and this renders the algorithm even more attractive.

Some tetra substituted furans and thiophenes were reacted with methyl acrylate under BF3-etherate catalysed Diels-Alder conditions. While the derivatives of furan underwent Diels-Alder reaction in a facile manner, an observation of 2,5-dimethyl-3,4-dianisylthiophene undergoing Diels-Alder reaction with methyl acrylate is remarkable. The ability to metabolize aromatic beta-glucosides such as salicin and arbutin varies among members of the Enterobacteriaceae. The ability of Escherichia coli to degrade salicin and arbutin appears to be cryptic, subject to activation of the bgl genes, whereas many members of the Klebsiella genus can metabolize these sugars. We have examined the genetic basis for beta-glucoside utilization in Klebsiella aerogenes. The Klebsiella equivalents of bglG, bglB and bglR have been cloned using the genome sequence database of Klebsiella pneumoniae. Nucleotide sequencing shows that the K. aerogenes bgl genes show substantial similarities to the E. coli counterparts. The K. aerogenes bgl genes in multiple copies can also complement E. coli mutants deficient in bglG encoding the antiterminator and bglB encoding the phospho-beta-glucosidase, suggesting that they are functional homologues. The regulatory region bglR of K aerogenes shows a high degree of similarity of the sequences involved in BglG-mediated regulation. Interestingly, the regions corresponding to the negative elements present in the E. coli regulatory region show substantial divergence in K aerogenes. The possible evolutionary implications of the results are discussed. (C) 2003 Federation of European Microbiological Societies. Published by Elsevier Science B.v. All rights reserved.

For more than two hundred years, the world has discussed the issue of whether to continue the process of patenting or whether to do away with it. Developed countries remain polarized for various reasons but nevertheless the pro patent regime continued. The result was a huge volume of patents. The present article explains the implications of excessive volume of patents and conditions under which prior art search fails. This article highlights the importance and necessity of standardization efforts so as to bring about convergence of views on patenting.

Differential evolution (DE) is arguably one of the most powerful stochastic real-parameter optimization algorithms of current interest. Since its inception in the mid 1990s, DE has been finding many successful applications in real-world optimization problems from diverse domains of science and engineering. This paper takes a first significant step toward the convergence analysis of a canonical DE (DE/rand/1/bin) algorithm. It first deduces a time-recursive relationship for the probability density function (PDF) of the trial solutions, taking into consideration the DE-type mutation, crossover, and selection mechanisms. Then, by applying the concepts of Lyapunov stability theorems, it shows that as time approaches infinity, the PDF of the trial solutions concentrates narrowly around the global optimum of the objective function, assuming the shape of a Dirac delta distribution. Asymptotic convergence behavior of the population PDF is established by constructing a Lyapunov functional based on the PDF and showing that it monotonically decreases with time. The analysis is applicable to a class of continuous and real-valued objective functions that possesses a unique global optimum (but may have multiple local optima). Theoretical results have been substantiated with relevant computer simulations.

A class of model reference adaptive control system which make use of an augmented error signal has been introduced by Monopoli. Convergence problems in this attractive class of systems have been investigated in this paper using concepts from hyperstability theory. It is shown that the condition on the linear part of the system has to be stronger than the one given earlier. A boundedness condition on the input to the linear part of the system has been taken into account in the analysis - this condition appears to have been missed in the previous applications of hyperstability theory. Sufficient conditions for the convergence of the adaptive gain to the desired value are also given.
