The prediction of the sound attenuation in lined ducts with sheared mean flow has been a topic of research for many years. This involves solving the sheared mean flow wave equation, satisfying the relevant boundary condition. As far as the authors' knowledge goes, this has always been done using numerical techniques. Here, an analytical solution is presented for the wave propagation in two-dimensional rectangular lined ducts with laminar mean flow. The effect of laminar mean flow is studied for both the downstream and the upstream wave propagation. The attenuation values predicted for the laminar mean flow case are compared with those for the case of uniform mean flow. Analytical expressions are derived for the transfer matrices.

After microscopic characterization of the size distributions of gold clusters, deposited on carbon substrates by vacuum evaporation or by soft landing, Au(4f') binding energy of the clusters has been measured as a function of the mean cluster size. Similar measurements have been carried out on Au clusters prepared from sols by chemical means and high-nuclearity cluster compounds. In general, small clusters with a mean diameter of $2 nm show significantly larger binding energies than the bulk metal value, due to the onset of nonmetallicity. Nonmetallicity manifests itself in terms of a tunneling conductance gap only in clusters of diameter ;5 1 nm containing 40 atoms or fewer.

The thermal degradation products of two sulfur polymers, poly(styrenedisulfide) (PSD) and poly(styrenetetrasulfide) (PST), were investigated in parallel by direct pyrolysis-mass spectrometry (DPMS) and by flash pyrolysis-GC/MS (Py-GC/MS). The time-scale of the two pyrolysis techniques is quite different, and therefore they were able to detect significantly different products in the pyrolysis of PSD and PST because of the thermal lability of sulfur-containing compounds. However, the results obtained are not contradictory, and satisfactory mechanisms for the thermal degradation of PSD and PST have been derived from the overall evidence available. Pyrolysis compounds containing sulfur, styrene, and a number of cyclic styrene sulfides and diphenyldithianes have been observed by DPMS. However, in flash pyrolysis-GC/MS, styrene, sulfur, only one cyclic styrene sulfide, and two isomers of diphenylthiophene have been detected. These thiophene derivatives were indeed absent among the compounds obtained by DPMS because they were the terminal (most thermally stable) species arising from further decomposition of the cyclic styrene sulfides formed in the primary thermal degradation processes of PSD and PST.
Investigations Of Iron Adducts Of C-60 - Novel Fec60 In The Solid-State With Fe Inside The C-60 Cage
Resumo:
By carrying out contact-arc vaporization of graphite in a partial atmosphere of Fe(CO)5, an iron-adduct with C60 has been obtained. The adduct has been characterized by various techniques including mass spectrometry, Fe-57 Mossbauer spectroscopy and Fe K-EXAFS. Properties of this adduct are compared with those of an adduct prepared by solution method where Fe is clearly outside the cage. Results suggest that FeC60 obtained from the gas phase reaction has the Fe atom in the cage.

Mass spectrometric studies show that contact-arc vaporization of graphite in a partial atmosphere of N2 or NH3 yields nitrogenous products tentatively assigned to species such as C70N2, C59N6, C59N4 and C59N2 involving addition of or substitution by nitrogen along with the species due to C2 and C4 losses. Mass spectrometry and other techniques have been employed to identify products of the nucleophilic addition of aliphatic amines to C60 and C70 in solution phase.

Preparation and characterization of the fullerenes, C60 and C70, are described in detail, including the design of the generators fabricated locally. The characterization techniques employed are UV-visible, IR, Raman and C-13 NMR spectroscopies, scanning as well as transmission electron microscopy and mass spectrometry. The electron energy level diagram of C60 as well as the one-electron reductions of C60 and C70 leading to various anions are discussed. Electronic absorption spectra of C60- and C60(2-) are reported. Phase transitions from the plastic to the crystalline states of C60 and C70 are examined. Based on a C-13 NMR study in a mixture of nematic liquid crystals, it has been demonstrated that C60 retains its extraordinary symmetry in solution phase as well. Interaction of C60 and C70 with strong electron-donor molecules has been investigated employing cyclic voltammetry. Superconductivity of K(x)C60 has been studied by non-resonant microwave absorption; Na(x)C60 as well as K(c)C70 are shown to be non-superconducting. Doping C60 with iodine does not make it superconducting. Interaction of C60 with SbCl5 and liquid Br2 gives rise to halogenated products.

The structure and chemical environment of Cu in Cu/CeO2 catalysts synthesized by the solution combustion method have been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), cyclic voltammetry (CV), and extended X-ray fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. High-resolution XRD studies of 3 and 5 atom % Cu/CeO2 do not show CuO lines in their respective patterns. The structure could be refined for the composition Ce1-xCuxO2-delta (x = 0.03 and 0.05; delta similar to 0.13 and 0.16) in the fluorite structure with 5-8% oxide ion vacancy. High-resolution TEM did not show CuO particles in 5 atom % Cu/CeO2. EPR as well as XPS studies confirm the presence of Cu2+ species in the CeO2 matrix. Redox potentials of Cu species in the CeO2 matrix are lower than those in CuO. EXAFS investigations of these catalysts show an average coordination number of 3 around the Cu2+ ion in the first shell at a distance of 1.96 Angstrom, indicating the O2- ion vacancy around the Cu2+ ion. The Cu-O bond length also decreases compared to that in CuO. The second and third shell around the Cu2+ ion in the catalysts are attributed to -Cu2+-O2--Cu2+ - at 2.92 Angstrom and -Cu2+-O2--Ce4+- at the distance of 3.15 Angstrom, respectively. The present results provide direct evidence for the formation of a Ce1-xCuxO2-delta type of solid solution phase having -square-Cu2+-O-Ce4+- kind of linkages.

Diethyl allyl phosphate (DEAP) monomer has been synthesized, and characterized, using H-1 NMR and direct ionization mass spectrometric (DI-MS) techniques. It was free-radically polymerized to yield the poly(diethyl allyl phosphate) (PDEAP). The direct pyrolysis-mass spectrometric (DP-MS) analysis of the PDEAP revealed that it undergoes thermal degradation to yield mainly the monomer. Utility of PDEAP as a potent flame-retardant additive in polystyrene (PS) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) has also been established.

Electronic and ionic conductivities of silver selenide crystal (Ag$_2+\delta$ Se) have been measured over a range of stoichiometry through the $\alpha - \beta$ transition by using solid state electrochemical techniques. In the high temperature $\beta$-phase Ag$_2$Se shows metallic behaviour of electronic conductivity for high values of $\delta$; with decrease in $\delta$, the conductivity of the material exhibits a transition. The magnitude of change in electronic conductivity at the $\alpha - \beta$ transition is also determined by stoichiometry. Ionic conductivity of the $\beta$-phase does not vary significantly with stochiometry. Ionic conductivity of the $\beta$-does not vary significantly with stoichiometry. A model to explain the observed transport properties has been suggested.

Click chemistry has played a significant role as a rapid and versatile strategy for conjugating two molecular fragments under very mild reaction conditions. Introduction of ferrocene-derived triazole systems using click chemistry has attracted enormous interest in various fields due to its potential applications in electrochemical techniques for detection and sensing. The present discussion focuses on the synthesis of ferrocene-triazole and the importance of using a CuAAC reaction for such conjugation. Applications of ferrocene-based click reactions in conjugate chemistry, asymmetric catalysis, medicinal chemistry, host-guest interactions, and materials chemistry have been highlighted.

Colloids of silver and palladium nanoparticles have been prepared by the Solvated Metal Atom Dispersion method. The as-prepared Ag colloid consisting of polydisperse nanoparticles is transformed into a monodisperse colloid by the digestive ripening process which involves refluxing the as-prepared colloid in the presence of a surfactant. In addition to the monodisperse nanoparticles, a small amount of an Ag-thiolate complex is also formed. Refluxing a mixture of the as-prepared Ag and Pd colloids results in Ag@Pd core-shell nanoparticles. The core-shell structure has been established using a combination of techniques such as UV-visible spectroscopy, high resolution electron microscopy, energy filtered electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray analysis, high angle annular dark field imaging and powder X-ray diffraction.

Designing and developing ideal catalyst paves the way to green chemistry. The fields of catalysis and nanoscience have been inextricably linked to each other for a long time. Thanks to the recent advances in characterization techniques, the old technology has been revisited with a new scope. The last decade has witnessed a flood of research activity in the field of nanocatalysis, with most of the studies focusing on the effect of size on catalytic properties. This led to the development of much greener catalysts with higher activity, selectivity and greater ease of separation from the reaction medium. This Minireview describes the emerging trends in the field of nanocatalysis with implications towards green chemistry and sustainability.

There has been growing interest in understanding energy metabolism in human embryos generated using assisted reproductive techniques (ART) for improving the overall success rate of the method. Using NMR spectroscopy as a noninvasive tool, we studied human embryo metabolism to identify specific biomarkers to assess the quality of embryos for their implantation potential. The study was based on estimation of pyruvate, lactate and alanine levels in the growth medium, ISM1, used in the culture of embryos. An NMR study involving 127 embryos from 48 couples revealed that embryos transferred on Day 3 (after 72 h in vitro culture) with successful implantation (pregnancy) exhibited significantly (p < 10(-5)) lower pyruvate/alanine ratios compared to those that failed to implant. Lactate levels in media were similar for all embryos. This implies that in addition to lactate production, successfully implanted embryos use pyruvate to produce alanine and other cellular functions. While pyruvate and alanine individually have been used as biomarkers, the present study highlights the potential of combining them to provide a single parameter that correlates strongly with implantation potential. Reaction of cis-Cl2Pt(S(O)Me-2)(2)] with 1 equiv of LH22-tolyl and LH24-tolyl in the presence of 1 equiv of NaOAc in methanol under reflux condition for 3 h afforded acetate-substituted products, cis-(AcO)ClPt(S(O)Me-2)(ArN=C(NHAr)(2))] (Ar = 2-MeC6H4 (6) and 4-MeC6H4 (7)) in 83% and 84% yields, respectively. Reaction of cis-Cl2Pt(S(O)Me-2)(2)] with 1 equiv of LH22-anisyl and LH22-tolyl in the presence of 1 equiv of NaOAc in methanol under reflux condition for 3 and 12 h afforded six-membered C,N] platinacycles, Pt{kappa(2)(C,N)-C6H3R-3(NHC(NHAr)(=NAr))-2}Cl(S(O)Me-2)] (Ar = 2-RC6H4; R = OMe (8) and Me (9)), in 92% and 79% yields, respectively. The new complexes have been characterized by analytical and spectroscopic techniques, and further the molecular structures of 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, and 8 have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The platinum atom in 1, 4, and 5 exhibited the trans configuration, while that in 2, 6, and 8 exhibited the cis configuration. Complex 6 is shown to be the precursor for 9, and the former is suggested to transform to the latter possibly via an intramolecular C-H activation followed by elimination of AcOH. The solution behavior of new complexes has been studied by multinuclear NMR (H-1, Pt-195, and C-13) spectroscopy. The new complexes exist exclusively as a single isomer (trans (1 and 5) and cis (6 and 7)), a mixture of cis and trans isomers with the former isomer being predominant in the case of 2 and the latter isomer being predominant in the case of 3. Complex 5 in the trans form revealed the presence of one isomer at 0.007 mM concentration and two isomers in about 1.00:0.12 ratio at 0.154 mM concentration as revealed by H-1 NMR spectroscopy, and this has been ascribed to the restricted Pt-S bond rotation at higher concentration. Platinacycle 8 exists as one isomer, while 9 exists as a mixture of seven isomers in solution. The influence of steric factor, pi-acceptor property of the guanidine, subtle solid-state packing forces upon the configuration of the platinum atom, and the number of isomers in solution have been outlined. Factors that accelerate or slow down the cycloplatination reaction, the role of NaOAc, and a plausible mechanism of this reaction have been discussed.
