An attempt is made to present some challenging problems (mainly to the technically minded researchers) in the development of computational models for certain (visual) processes which are executed with, apparently, deceptive ease by the human visual system. However, in the interest of simplicity (and with a nonmathematical audience in mind), the presentation is almost completely devoid of mathematical formalism. Some of the findings in biological vision are presented in order to provoke some approaches to their computational models, The development of ideas is not complete, and the vast literature on biological and computational vision cannot be reviewed here. A related but rather specific aspect of computational vision (namely, detection of edges) has been discussed by Zucker, who brings out some of the difficulties experienced in the classical approaches.Space limitations here preclude any detailed analysis of even the elementary aspects of information processing in biological vision, However, the main purpose of the present paper is to highlight some of the fascinating problems in the frontier area of modelling mathematically the human vision system.

We discuss a many-body Hamiltonian with two- and three-body interactions in two dimensions introduced recently by Murthy, Bhaduri and Sen. Apart from an analysis of some exact solutions in the many-body system, we analyse in detail the two-body problem which is completely solvable. We show that the solution of the two-body problem reduces to solving a known differential equation due to Heun. We show that the two-body spectrum becomes remarkably simple for large interaction strengths and the level structure resembles that of the Landau levels. We also clarify the 'ultraviolet' regularization which is needed to define an inverse-square potential properly and discuss its implications for our model.

Experiments were carried out investigating the features of mean and unsteady surface pressure fluctuations in boat-tail separated flows relevant to launch vehicle configurations at transonic speeds. The tests were performed on a generic axisymmetric body in the Mach-number range of 0.7-1.2, and the important geometrical parameters, namely, the boat-tail angle and diameter ratio, were varied systematically. The measurements made included primarily the mean and unsteady surface-pressure fluctuations on nine different model configurations. Flow-visualization studies employing a surface oil flow, and schlieren techniques were carried out to infer features like boundary-layer separation, reattachment, and shock waves in the flow. The features of mean and fluctuating surface pressures are discussed in detail including aspects of similarity. It has been observed that, on a generic configuration employed in the present study, the maximum levels of surface-pressure fluctuations in the reattachment zone are appreciably lower than those found on launch vehicle configurations having a bulbous or hammerhead nose shape. A simple correlation is suggested for the maximum value of rms pressure fluctuations in the reattachment zone at different freestream Mach numbers.

We report investigations on the texture, corrosion and wear behavior of ultra-fine grained (UFG) Ti-13Nb-Zr alloy, processed by equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE) technique, for biomedical applications. The microstructure obtained was characterized by X-ray line profile analysis, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and electron back scattered diffraction (EBSD). We focus on the corrosion resistance and the fretting behavior, the main considerations for such biomaterials, in simulated body fluid. To this end. potentiodynamic polarization tests were carried out to evaluate the corrosion behavior of the UFG alloy in Hanks solution at 37 degrees C. The fretting wear behavior was carried out against bearing steel in the same conditions. The roughness of the samples was also measured to examine the effect of topography on the wear behavior of the samples. Our results showed that the ECAE process increases noticeably the performance of the alloy as orthopedic implant. Although no significant difference was observed in the fretting wear behavior, the corrosion resistance of the UFG alloy was found to be higher than the non-treated material. (c) 2012 Elsevier B.V. This paper investigates a new approach for point matching in multi-sensor satellite images. The feature points are matched using multi-objective optimization (angle criterion and distance condition) based on Genetic Algorithm (GA). This optimization process is more efficient as it considers both the angle criterion and distance condition to incorporate multi-objective switching in the fitness function. This optimization process helps in matching three corresponding corner points detected in the reference and sensed image and thereby using the affine transformation, the sensed image is aligned with the reference image. From the results obtained, the performance of the image registration is evaluated and it is concluded that the proposed approach is efficient.

The stability of a long circular tunnel in a cohesive frictional soil medium has been determined in the presence of horizontal pseudo-static seismic body forces. The tunnel is supported by means of lining and anchorage system which is assumed to exert uniform internal compressive normal pressure on its periphery. The upper bound finite element limit analysis has been performed to compute the magnitude of the internal compressive pressure required to support the tunnel. The results have been presented in terms of normalized compressive normal stress, defined in terms of sigma(i)/c; where sigma(i) is the magnitude of the compressive normal pressure on the periphery of the tunnel and c refers to soil cohesion. The variation of sigma(i)/c with horizontal earthquake acceleration coefficient (alpha(h)) has been established for different combinations of H/D, gamma D/c and phi where (i) H and D refers to tunnel cover and diameter, respectively, and (ii) gamma and phi correspond to unit weight and internal friction angle of soil mass, respectively. Nodal velocity patterns have also been plotted for assessing the zones of significant plastic deformation. The analysis clearly reveals that an increase in the magnitude of the earthquake acceleration leads to a significant increment in the magnitude of internal compressive pressure.
