The present report illustrates the phenomenon of phase separation leading to the splitting of solid solution structured Ag-Co nanoparticles into pure Ag and pure Co nanoparticles upon isothermal annealing inside a transmission electron microscope. In bulk, Ag-Co system shows negligible mutual solubility into a single phase solid solution structure upto a very high temperature. The Ag-Co nanoparticle splitting revealed that room temperature, solid solution atomic configuration, between bulk immiscible Ag and Co atoms coexisting in a nano-sized particle, is a kinetically frozen atomic arrangement and not a thermodynamically stable structure. The observed phase separation behavior resulting in particle splitting at high temperatures can be used to produce devices for sensor applications. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We present a heterogeneous finite element method for the solution of a high-dimensional population balance equation, which depends both the physical and the internal property coordinates. The proposed scheme tackles the two main difficulties in the finite element solution of population balance equation: (i) spatial discretization with the standard finite elements, when the dimension of the equation is more than three, (ii) spurious oscillations in the solution induced by standard Galerkin approximation due to pure advection in the internal property coordinates. The key idea is to split the high-dimensional population balance equation into two low-dimensional equations, and discretize the low-dimensional equations separately. In the proposed splitting scheme, the shape of the physical domain can be arbitrary, and different discretizations can be applied to the low-dimensional equations. In particular, we discretize the physical and internal spaces with the standard Galerkin and Streamline Upwind Petrov Galerkin (SUPG) finite elements, respectively. The stability and error estimates of the Galerkin/SUPG finite element discretization of the population balance equation are derived. It is shown that a slightly more regularity, i.e. the mixed partial derivatives of the solution has to be bounded, is necessary for the optimal order of convergence. Numerical results are presented to support the analysis.
Operator-splitting finite element algorithms for computations of high-dimensional parabolic problems
Resumo:
An operator-splitting finite element method for solving high-dimensional parabolic equations is presented. The stability and the error estimates are derived for the proposed numerical scheme. Furthermore, two variants of fully-practical operator-splitting finite element algorithms based on the quadrature points and the nodal points, respectively, are presented. Both the quadrature and the nodal point based operator-splitting algorithms are validated using a three-dimensional (3D) test problem. The numerical results obtained with the full 3D computations and the operator-split 2D + 1D computations are found to be in a good agreement with the analytical solution. Further, the optimal order of convergence is obtained in both variants of the operator-splitting algorithms. (C) 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Opportunistic selection selects the node that improves the overall system performance the most. Selecting the best node is challenging as the nodes are geographically distributed and have only local knowledge. Yet, selection must be fast to allow more time to be spent on data transmission, which exploits the selected node's services. We analyze the impact of imperfect power control on a fast, distributed, splitting based selection scheme that exploits the capture effect by allowing the transmitting nodes to have different target receive powers and uses information about the total received power to speed up selection. Imperfect power control makes the received power deviate from the target and, hence, affects performance. Our analysis quantifies how it changes the selection probability, reduces the selection speed, and leads to the selection of no node or a wrong node. We show that the effect of imperfect power control is primarily driven by the ratio of target receive powers. Furthermore, we quantify its effect on the net system throughput.

It is no exaggeration to state that the energy crisis is the most serious challenge that we face today. Among the strategies to gain access to reliable, renewable energy, the use of solar energy has clearly emerged as the most viable option. A promising direction in this context is artificial photosynthesis. In this article, we briefly describe the essential features of artificial photosynthesis in comparison with natural photosynthesis and point out the modest success that we have had in splitting water to produce oxygen and hydrogen, specially the latter.

We study the merging and splitting of quasi-two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates with strong dipolar interactions. We observe that if the dipoles have a non-zero component in the plane of the condensate, the dynamics of merging or splitting along two orthogonal directions, parallel and perpendicular to the projection of dipoles on the plane of the condensate, are different. The anisotropic merging and splitting of the condensate is a manifestation of the anisotropy of the roton-like mode in the dipolar system. The difference in dynamics disappears if the dipoles are oriented at right angles to the plane of the condensate as in this case the Bogoliubov dispersion, despite having roton-like features, is isotropic.

Perovskite oxides of the composition La1-xCaxMnO3 ( LCM) have been investigated for the thermochemical splitting of H2O and CO2 to produce H-2 and CO, respectively. The study was carried out in comparison with La1-xSrxMnO3, CeO2 and other oxides. The LCM system exhibits superior characteristics in high-temperature evolution of oxygen, and in reducing CO2 to CO and H2O to H-2. The best results were obtained with La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 whose performance is noteworthy compared to that of other oxides including ceria. The orthorhombic structure of LCM seems to be a crucial factor.

A direct discretization approach and an operator-splitting scheme are applied for the numerical simulation of a population balance system which models the synthesis of urea with a uni-variate population. The problem is formulated in axisymmetric form and the setup is chosen such that a steady state is reached. Both solvers are assessed with respect to the accuracy of the results, where experimental data are used for comparison, and the efficiency of the simulations. Depending on the goal of simulations, to track the evolution of the process accurately or to reach the steady state fast, recommendations for the choice of the solver are given. Monte Carlo simulation methods involving splitting of Markov chains have been used in evaluation of multi-fold integrals in different application areas. We examine in this paper the performance of these methods in the context of evaluation of reliability integrals from the point of view of characterizing the sampling fluctuations. The methods discussed include the Au-Beck subset simulation, Holmes-Diaconis-Ross method, and generalized splitting algorithm. A few improvisations based on first order reliability method are suggested to select algorithmic parameters of the latter two methods. The bias and sampling variance of the alternative estimators are discussed. Also, an approximation to the sampling distribution of some of these estimators is obtained. Illustrative examples involving component and series system reliability analyses are presented with a view to bring out the relative merits of alternative methods. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. The production of H-2 via photocatalytic water splitting reaction has attracted a great attention as a clean and renewable energy for next generation. Despite tremendous efforts, the present challenge for materials scientist is to develop highly active photo catalysts for splitting of water at low cost. This article reports the synthesis of TiO2-reduced graphene oxide hybrid nanomaterials through ionothermal method using functionalized ionic liquid for the enhanced hydrogen generation via water splitting reaction. The structural and morphological properties of the samples were investigated by XFtD, Raman spectroscopy, TG-DTA, UV-vis spectroscopy and TEM. A substantial increase of H-2 evolution was observed for TiO2-reduced graphene oxide hybrid nanomaterials. This is due to the high migration efficiency of photo-induced electrons and the inhibition of charge carrier recombination due to the electronic interaction between TiO2 and reduced graphene oxide. i.e, reduced graphene oxide acts as an electron-acceptor which effectively hinders the electron hole pair recombination of TiO2. We re-assess experimental soft X-ray absorption spectra of the oxygen K-shell which we recorded operando from iron oxide during photoelectrochemical water splitting in KOH electrolyte. In particular, we refer to recently reported transitional electron hole states which originate within the charge carrier depletion layer of the iron oxide and on the iron oxide surface. For the latter we find that an intermediate oxy-peroxo species is formed on the iron oxide with increasing bias potential, which disappears upon further polarization of the electrode, concomitantly with the evolution and disappearance of the aforementioned surface state. The oxygen spectra contain also the spectroscopic signatures of the electrolyte water, the position of which changes with increasing bias potential towards lower X-ray energies, revealing the breaking and formation of hydrogen bonds in the water during the experiment. Combined with potential dependent impedance spectroscopy data we are able to sketch the molecular structure of chemical intermediates and their charge carrier dynamics. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. We report ab initio calculations for the band dispersions and total as well as partial densities of states for vacancy ordered, clustered spinels, GaMo4S8 and GaV4S8. Results are presented for the high temperature cubic phase for both compounds. Additionally, we discuss results of similar calculations for GaMo4S8 in an idealized cubic structure, as well as the nonmagnetic and the ferromagnetic states of the low temperature rhombohedral structure. Comparison of these results allows us to discuss the unusual aspects of the electronic structure of this interesting class of compounds, and provide estimates of the crystal-field and exchange splitting strengths.

LaCrO3 is a wide-band-gap insulator which does not evolve to a metallic state even after hole doping. We report electronic structure of this compound and its Sr substituents investigated by photoemission and inverse photoemission spectroscopies in conjunction with various calculations. The results show that LaCrO 3 is close to the Mott-Hubbard insulating regime with a gap of about 2.8 eV. Analysis of Cr 2p core-level spectrum suggests that the intra-atomic Coulomb interaction strength and the charge-transfer energy to be 5.0 and 5.5 eV, respectively, We also estimate the intra-atomic exchange interaction strength and a crystal-field splitting of about 0.7 and 2.0 eV, respectively. Sr substitution leading to hole doping in this system decreases the charge-excitation gap, but never collapses it to give a metallic behavior. The changes in the occupied as well as unoccupied spectral features are discussed in terms of the formation of local Cr4+ configurations arising from strong electron-phonon interactions.
