Diglycyl triperoxodivanadate [V2O2(O2)3(Gly H)2(H2O)2], a synthetic compound with μ-peroxo-bridge derived from H2O2and vanadate, oxidized bromide to a bromination-competent intermediate in phosphate buffer and physiological pH. This is in contrast to the requirement of acid medium with H2O2as the oxidant. Addition of its solid to bromide solution instantly produced a 262-nm-absorbing compound that converted phenol red (a trap) to its 592-nm-absorbing bromo-derivative. The high bromination activity was lost on dissolving this compound in water and the solution showed the presence of peroxovanadates (mono and di) and vanadates (V1and oligomeric V10) in51V-NMR spectrum. Of these, diperoxovanadate and vanadate together supported slow bromination activity by a second set of reactions including bromide-assisted reductive formation of vanadyl. Bromination activity dependent on vanadyl was sensitive to oxidation by excess H2O2and to complexation by EDTA, whereas that of triperoxodivanadate was relatively insensitive. Vanadyl and diperoxovanadate are capable of forming a μ-peroxo-bridged complex that is essentially similar to the synthetic vanadate dimer used in the present experiments. It appears that a μ-peroxo-intermediate is the proximal oxidant of bromide in vanadium-catalyzed bromoperoxidation.

Sodium ethylselenolates with functional groups X (where X = -OH, -COOH, -COOMe and -COOEt) at beta-carbon were prepared in situ by reductive cleavage of corresponding diselenide with NaBH4 either in methanol or aqueous ammonia. Treatment of these selenolates with [M2Cl2(mu-Cl)(2)(PR'(3))(2)] (M = Pd or Pt; PR'(3) = PMePh2, PnPr(3)) in different stoichiometry yielded various bi- and tri-nuclear complexes. The homoleptic hexanuclear complexes [Pd(mu-SeCH2CH2X)(2)](6) (X = OH, COOH, COOEt), were obtained by reacting Na2PdCl4 with NaSeCH2CH2X. All these complexes have been fully characterized. Molecular structures of ethylselenolates containing hydroxyl and carboxylic acid groups revealed solid state associated structures through inter-molecular hydrogen bond interactions. Trinuclear complex, [Pd3Cl2(mu-SeCH2CH2COOH)(4)(PnPr(3))(2)] (3a), was disposed in a boat form unlike chair conformation observed for the corresponding methylester complex. The effect of beta-functionality in ethylselenolate ligands towards reactivity, structures and thermal properties of palladium and platinum complexes has been extensively Studied.

The effect of solvent on chemical reactivity has generally been explained on the basis of the dielectric constant and viscosity. However a number of spectroscopic studies, including UV-VIS, IR and Raman, has led to numerous empirical parameters to define solvent effect based on either solvating ability or polarity scale. These parameters include solvent polarizability, dipolarity, Lewis acidity and Lewis basicity, E-T(30), pi*, alpha, beta etc. However, from a structural point of view, we can separate solvation as static and dynamic processes. The static solvation basically relates to stabilization of the molecular structure by the solvent to attain the equilibrium structure, both in the intermediate and ground state. Dynamic solvation relates to solvent reorganization-induced dynamics prior to the structural reorganization to reach the equilibrium state. In this paper, we present (a) structural distortions induced by the solvent due to preferential solvation of the triplet excited state, and (b) the importance of dynamic solvation induced by vibronic coupling (pseudo-Jahn-Teller coupling). The examples include the effect of solvent on structure and reactivity of excited states of 2,2,2-trifluoroacetophenone (TFA). Based on the comparison of time resolved resonance Raman (TR3) data of TFA and other substituted acetophenone systems, it was found that change in solvent polarity indeed results in electronic state switching and structural changes in the excited state, which explains the trend in reactivity. Further, a TR3 study of fluoranil (FA) in the triplet excited state in solvents of varying polarities indicates that the structure of FA in the triplet excited state is determined by vibronic coupling effects and thus distorted structure. These experimental results have been well supported by density functional theoretical computational studies.

An assay was developed for quantitation of the antigenic relationship between viruses, by modification of the indirect ELISA. The principle of this method is to estimate the epitopes not shared between the related viruses, after titration of the antibodies specific to the common epitopes as in a blocking ELISA. In practice, varying concentrations of purified virus are preincubated with a fixed dilution of heterologous or homologous antiserum and the unbound antibodies present in the mixture are back titrated with virus particles bound to microtitre plates. The antigenic relationship is described in terms of differentiation index (DI) and total antigenic reactivity (TAR). This method has been used to quantitate cross-reactivity between two geographically different isolates of Oryctes baculovirus.

X.p.s. studies on the adsorption of oxygen on a barium-covered Pb surface have shown the presence of two distinct types of oxygen species: oxidic, O2–, and the peroxo-like O2–2(ads), and the surface has been identified as a composite of PbO and BaPbO3. On a barium pre-covered surface, the sticking probability of oxygen on Pb is increased. The O2–(ads) species preferentially reacts with HCl forming PbCl2(ads)via proton abstraction, whereas O2–2(ads) is not reactive with HCl vapour. On the Pb surface, the PbCl2 overlayer reacts with excess HCl, forming a volatile compound believed to be Pb(ClHCl)2, while in the presence of coadsorbed barium, the stability of PbCl2 is increased and the activation energy for the reaction: PbCl2(ads)+ 2HCl(g) Pb(ClHCl)2(g) is increased. Stronger intermetallic interaction is suggested to be the reason for higher PbCl2 stability.

Thermal reactivities of ammonium perchlorate (AP) pressed at 1500 kg cm–2 for various dwell times ranging from 0 to 45 min have been investigated. Reactivity of AP is observed to (a) increase with increase of dwell time up to 15 min and (b) decrease for the compacts obtained at higher dwell times. X-ray diffraction profiles of the compacts indicated a broadening up to 15 min dwell time and a narrowing thereafter. The increase in the reactivity has been attributed to the increase in the number of gross imperfections and plastic deformation of particles. The decrease in the reactivity is explained in terms of recrystallization after plastic deformation. Local heating is shown to exist during compaction though its macroscopic effect is insignificant during compaction of AP.

Absence of photoreaction of (I)and (II) in the solid state is rationalized in the light of unfavourable intramolecular geometry.

The 16-electron, coordinatively unsaturated, dicationic ruthenium complex Ru(P(OH)(2)(OMe))(dppe)(2)]OTf](2) (1a) brings about the heterolysis of the C-H bond in phenylacetylene to afford the phenylacetylide complex trans-Ru(C CPh)(P(OH)(2)(OMe))(dppe)(2)]OTf] (2). The phenylacetylide complex undergoes hydrogenation to give a ruthenium hydride complex trans-Ru(H)(P(OH)(2)(OMe))(dppe)(2)]OTf] (3) and phenylacetylene via the addition of H-2 across the Ru-C bond. The 16-electron complex also reacts with HSiCl3 quite vigorously to yield a chloride complex trans-Ru(Cl)(P(OH)(2)(OMe))(dppe)(2)]OTf] (4). On the other hand, the other coordinatively unsaturated ruthenium complex Ru(P(OH)(3))(dppe)(2)]OTf](2) (1b) reacts with a base N-benzylideneaniline to afford a phosphonate complex Ru(P(O)(OH)(2))(dppe)(2)]OTf] (5) via the abstraction of one of the protons of the P(OH)(3) ligand by the base. The phenylacetylide, chloride, and the phosphonate complexes have been structurally characterized. The phosphonate complex reacts with H-2 to afford the corresponding dihydrogen complex trans-Ru(eta(2)-H-2)(P(O)(OH)(2))(dppe)(2)]OTf] (5-H2). The intact nature of the H-H bond in this species was established using variable temperature H-1 spin-lattice relaxation time measurements and the observation of a significant J(H,D) coupling in the HD isotopomer trans-Ru(eta(2)-HD)(P(O)(OH)(2))(dppe)(2)]OTf] (5-HD). By the reaction of Ru2Cl(O2CAr)4 (1) and PPh3 in MeCN-H2O the diruthenium(II,III) and diruthenium(II) compounds of the type Ru2(OH2)Cl(MeCN)(O2CAr)4(PPh3)2 (2) and Ru2(OH2)(MeCN)2(O2CAr)4(PPh3)2 (3) were prepared and characterized by analytical, spectral, and electrochemical data (Ar is an aryl group, C6H4-p-X; X = H, OMe, Me, Cl, NO2). The molecular structure of Ru2(OH2)Cl(MeCN)(O2CC6H4-p-OMe)4(PPh3)2 was determined by X-ray crystallography. Crystal data are as follows: triclinic, P1BAR, a = 13.538 (5) angstrom, b = 15.650 (4) angstrom, c = 18.287 (7) angstrom, alpha = 101.39 (3)-degrees, beta = 105.99 (4)-degrees, gamma = 97.94 (3)-degrees, V = 3574 angstrom 3, Z = 2. The molecule is asymmetric, and the two ruthenium centers are clearly distinguishable. The Ru(III)-Ru(II), Ru(III)-(mu-OH2), and Ru(II)-(mu-OH2) distances and the Ru-(mu-OH2)-Ru angle in [{Ru(III)Cl(eta-1-O2CC6H4-p-OMe)(PPh3)}(mu-OH2)(mu-O2CC6H4-p-OMe)2{Ru(II)(MeCN)(eta-1-O2CC6H4-p-OMe)(PPh3)}] are 3.604 (1), 2.127 (8), and 2.141 (10) angstrom and 115.2 (5)-degrees, respectively. The compounds are paramagnetic and exhibit axial EPR spectra in the polycrystalline form. An intervalence transfer (IT) transition is observed in the range 900-960 nm in chloroform in these class II type trapped mixed-valence species 2. Compound 2 displays metal-centered one-electron reduction and oxidation processes near -0.4 and +0.6 V (vs SCE), respectively in CH2Cl2-TBAP. Compound 2 is unstable in solution phase and disproportionates to (mu-aquo)diruthenium(II) and (mu-oxo)diruthenium(III) complexes. The mechanistic aspects of the core conversion are discussed. The molecular structure of a diruthenium(II) compound, Ru2(OH2)(MeCN)2(O2CC6H4-p-NO2)4(PPh3)2.1.5CH2Cl2, was obtained by X-ray crystallography. The compound crystallizes in the space group P2(1)/c with a = 23.472 (6) angstrom, b = 14.303 (3) angstrom, c = 23.256 (7) angstrom, beta = 101.69 (2)-degrees, V = 7645 angstrom 3, and Z = 4. The Ru(II)-Ru(II) and two Ru(II)-(mu-OH2) distances and the Ru(II)-(mu-OH2)-Ru(II) angle in [{(PPh3)-(MeCN)(eta-1-O2CC6H4-p-NO2)Ru}2(mu-OH2)(mu-O2CC6H4-p-NO2)2] are 3.712 (1), 2.173 (9), and 2.162 (9) angstrom and 117.8 (4)-degrees, respectively. In both diruthenium(II,III) and diruthenium(II) compounds, each metal center has three facial ligands of varying pi-acidity and the aquo bridges are strongly hydrogen bonded with the eta-1-carboxylato facial ligands. The diruthenium(II) compounds are diamagnetic and exhibit characteristic H-1 NMR spectra in CDCl3. These compounds display two metal-centered one-electron oxidations near +0.3 and +1.0 V (vs SCE) in CH2Cl2-TBAP. The overall reaction between 1 and PPh3 in MeCN-H2O through the intermediacy of 2 is of the disproportionation type. The significant role of facial as well as bridging ligands in stabilizing the core structures is observed from electrochemical studies.

Using dynamic TG in H2, X-ray powder diffraction and Mössbauer Spectroscopy the reactivities fot hydrogen reduction of Fe2O3 prepared at different temperatures, Fe2O3 doped with oxides of Mn, Co, Ni and Cu prepared at 300DaggerC from nitrate precursors and intermediate spinels derived from above samples during reduction have been explored. The reactivity is higher for finely divided Fe2O3 prepared at 250DaggerC. The reduction is retarded by Mn, marginally affected by Co and accelerated by Ni and Cu, especially at higher (5 at.%) dopant concentration. These reactivities confirmed also by isothermal experiments, are ascribed to the nature of disorder in the metastable intermediate spinels and to hydrogen rsquospill overrsquo effects.
