A split-phase induction motor is fed from two three-phase voltage source inverters for speed control. This study analyses carrier-comparison based pulse width modulation (PWM) schemes for a split-phase motor drive, from a space-vector perspective. Sine-triangle PWM, one zero-sequence injection PWM where the same zero-sequence signal is used for both the inverters, and another zero-sequence injection PWM where different zero-sequence signals are employed for the two inverters are considered. The set of voltage vectors applied, the sequence in which the voltage vectors are applied, and the resulting current ripple vector are analysed for all the PWM methods. Besides all the PWM methods are compared in terms of dc bus utilisation. For the same three-phase sine reference, the PWM method with different zero-sequence signals for the two inverters is found to employ a set of vectors different from the other methods. Both analysis and experimental results show that this method results in lower total harmonic distortion and higher dc bus utilisation than the other two PWM methods.

Diffusion such is the integrated diffusion coefficient of the phase, the tracer diffusion coefficient of species at different temperatures and the activation energy for diffusion, are determined in V3Si phase with A15 crystal structure. The tracer diffusion coefficient of Si Was found to be negligible compared to the tracer diffusion coefficient of V. The calculated diffusion parameters will help to validate the theoretical analysis of defect structure of the phase, which plays an important role in the superconductivity.

Although LH is essential for survival and function of the corpus luteum (CL) in higher primates, luteolysis occurs during nonfertile cycles without a discernible decrease in circulating LH levels. Using genome-wide expression analysis, several experiments were performed to examine the processes of luteolysis and rescue of luteal function in monkeys. Induced luteolysis with GnRH receptor antagonist (Cetrorelix) resulted in differential regulation of 3949 genes, whereas replacement with exogenous LH (Cetrorelix plus LH) led to regulation of 4434 genes (1563 down-regulation and 2871 up-regulation). A model system for prostaglandin (PG) F-2 alpha-induced luteolysis in the monkey was standardized and demonstrated that PGF(2 alpha) regulated expression of 2290 genes in the CL. Analysis of the LH-regulated luteal transcriptome revealed that 120 genes were regulated in an antagonistic fashion by PGF(2 alpha). Based on the microarray data, 25 genes were selected for validation by real-time RT-PCR analysis, and expression of these genes was also examined in the CL throughout the luteal phase and from monkeys treated with human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) to mimic early pregnancy. The results indicated changes in expression of genes favorable to PGF(2 alpha) action during the late to very late luteal phase, and expressions of many of these genes were regulated in an opposite manner by exogenous hCG treatment. Collectively, the findings suggest that curtailment of expression of downstream LH-target genes possibly through PGF(2 alpha) action on the CL is among the mechanisms underlying cross talk between the luteotropic and luteolytic signaling pathways that result in the cessation of luteal function, but hCG is likely to abrogate the PGF(2 alpha)-responsive gene expression changes resulting in luteal rescue crucial for the maintenance of early pregnancy. DNA obtained from a human sputum isolate of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, NTI-64719, which showed extensive dissemination in the guinea pig model resulting in a high score for virulence was used to construct an expression library in the lambda ZAP vector. The size of DNA inserts in the library ranged from 1 to 3 kb, and recombinants represented 60% of the total plaques obtained. When probed with pooled serum from chronically infected tuberculosis patients, the library yielded 176 recombinants with a range of signal intensities. Among these, 93 recombinants were classified into 12 groups on the basis of DNA hybridization experiments, The polypeptides synthesized by the recombinants were predominantly LacZ fusion proteins, Serum obtained from patients who were clinically diagnosed to be in the early phase of M. tuberculosis infection was used to probe the 176 recombinants obtained. interestingly, some recombinants that gave very strong signals in the original screen did not react with early-phase serum; conversely, others whose signals were extremely weak in the original screen gave very intense signals with serum from recently infected patients, This indicates the differential nature of either the expression of these antigens or the immune response elicited by them as a function of disease progression.

This paper presents the modeling and analysis of a voltage source converter (VSC) based back-to-back (BTB) HVDC link. The case study considers the response to changes in the active and reactive power and disturbance caused by single line to ground (SLG) fault. The controllers at each terminal are designed to inject a variable (magnitude and phase angle) sinusoidal, balanced set of voltages to regulate/control the active and reactive power. It is also possible to regulate the converter bus (AC) voltage by controlling the injected reactive power. The analysis is carried out using both d-q model (neglecting the harmonics in the output voltages of VSC) and three phase detailed model of VSC. While the eigenvalue analysis and controller design is based on the d-q model, the transient simulation considers both models.

Dimeric and monomeric forms of the enzyme triosephosphate isomerase (TIM) from Plasmodium falciparum (Pf) have been detected under conditions of nanoflow by electrospray mass spectrometry. The dimer (M = 55 663 Da) exhibits a narrow charge state distribution with intense peaks limited to values of 18(+) to 21(+), maximal intensity being observed for charge states 19(+) and 20(+). A monomeric species with a charge state distribution ranging from 11(+) to 16(+) is also observed, which may be assigned to folded dissociated subunits. Complete dimer dissociation results under normal electrospray condition. The effects of solution pH and source temperature have been investigated. The observation of four distinct charge state distributions which may be assigned to a dimer, folded monomer, partially folded monomer and unfolded monomer is reported. Circular dichromism and fluorescence studies of Pf TIM at low pH support the retention of substantial secondary and tertiary structures. Satellite peaks in mass spectra corresponding to hydrated species are also observed and isotope shift upon deuteration is demonstrated. The analysis of all available independent crystal structures of Pf TIM and TIMs from other organisms permits identification of structurally conserved water molecules. Hydration observed in the dimer and folded monomeric forms in the gas phase may correspond to these conserved sites.

Investigations on the phase relations and dielectric properties of (1 -x)BaTiO3 + xNd2/3TiO 3 (BNT) ceramics sintered in air below 1650 K have been carried out. X-ray powder diffraction studies indicate apparent phase singularity for compositions with x < 0.3. Nd2Ti207 is detected at higher neodymium concentrations. The unit cell parameter changes continuously with neodymium content, and BaTiO3 is completely cubic at room temperature with x -- 0.0525, whereas electron diffraction studies indicate that the air-sintered BNT ceramics with x > 0.08 contain additional phases that are partly amorphous even to an electron beam. SEM observations reveal that BaTiO3 grains are mostly covered by a molten intergranular phase, and show the presence of randomly distributed Nd2Ti207 grains. Energy dispersive X-ray analysis shows the Ba-Nd-Ti ternary composition of the intergranular phase. Differential thermal analysis studies support the formation of a partial melt involving dissolution-precipitation of boundary layers of BaTiO3 grains. These complex phase relations are accounted for in terms of the phase instability of BaTiO3 with large cation-vacancy concentration as a result of heavy Nd 3+ substitution. The absence of structural intergrowth in (1 - x)BaTiO3 + xNd2/3TiO3 under oxidative conditions leads to a separation of phases wherein the new phases undergo melting and remain X-ray amorphous. BNT ceramics with 0.1 < x < 0.3 have ~eff >~ 104 with tan 6 < 0.1 and nearly flat temperature capacitance characteristics. The grain-size dependence of ee,, variations of ~eff and tan 6 with the measuring frequency, the non-ohmic resistivities, and the non-linear leakage currents at higher field-strengths which are accompanied by the decrease in eeff and rise in tan 3, are explained on the basis of an intergranular (internal boundary layer) dielectric characteristic of these ceramics.

The role of melt convection oil the performance of beat sinks with Phase Change Material (PCM) is presented in this paper. The beat sink consists of aluminum plate fins embedded in PCM and heat flux is supplied from the bottom. The design of such a heat sink requires optimization with respect to its geometrical parameters. The objective of the optimization is to maximize the heat sink operation time for the prescribed heat flux and the critical chip temperature. The parameters considered for optimization are fin number and fill thickness. The height and base plate thickness of heat sink are kept constant in the present analysis. An enthalpy based CFD model is developed, which is capable Of Simulating phase change and associated melt convection. The CFD model is Coupled with Genetic Algorithm (GA) for carrying out the optimization. Two cases are considered, one without melt convection (conduction regime) and the other with convection. It is found that the geometrical optimizations of heat sinks are different for the two cases, indicating the importance of inch convection in the design of heat sinks with PCMs.

Crystal and molecular structure of a compound 4-cyanobiphenyl-4'-heptylbiphenyl carboxylate (7CBB), which exhibit both monolayer smectic A and nematic phases, have been determined by direct methods using single crystal X-ray diffraction data. The structure is monoclinic with the space group P21/c and Z = 4. The unit cell parameters are a = 16.9550(5) Aring, b = 5.5912(18) Aring, c = 27.5390(9) Aring, agr = 90.000°, β = 93.986(6)°, and γ = 90.000°. Packing of the molecules is found to be precursor to SmC phase, although SmA1 phase is observed on melting. Several strong van der Waals interactions are observed in the core part of the neighboring molecular pairs. Crystal to mesophase transition is probably of reconstitutive nature. Geometry, packing, and nature of crystal-mesophase transition are compared to those in 6CBB.

The analysis of transient electrical stresses in the insulation of high voltage rotating machines is rendered difficult because of the existence of capacitive and inductive couplings between phases. The Published theories ignore many of the couplings between phases to obtain the solution. A new procedure is proposed here to determine the transient voltage distribution on rotating machine windings. All the significicant capacitive and inductive couplings between different sections in a phase and between different sections in different phases have been considered in this analysis. The experimental results show good correlation with those computed.

Phase relations in the system Ta-Rh-O were determined by analysis of quenched samples corresponding to thirteen compositions inside the ternary triangle after equilibration at 1273 K. All the Ta-Rh alloys were found to be in equilibrium with Ta2O5. Only one ternary oxide TaRhO4 was detected. Based on phase relations in the ternary system, a solid-state electrochemical cell, incorporating calcia-stabilized zirconia as the electrolyte, was designed to measure the standard Gibbs energy of formation (Delta G degrees, J mol(-1)) of TaRhO4 in the temperature range from 900 to 1300 K. For the reaction, 1/2 beta-Ta2O5 + 1/2 Rh2O3(ortho) -> TaRhO4 Delta G degrees = -42993 + 5.676T (+/- 85) The calculated decomposition temperatures of TaRhO4 are 1644 +/- 5K in pure O-2 and 1543 +/- 5K in air at a total pressure p(o) = 0.1 MPa. Thermodynamic properties of TaRhO4 at 298.15K have been evaluated from the results. The limited experimental thermodynamic data for Rh-rich alloys available in the literature are in fair accord with Miedema's model. The Gibbs energies of formation of the different phases in the binary system Ta-Rh were estimated based on these inputs, consistent with the binary phase diagram. Based on the thermodynamic information on the stability of various phases, an oxygen potential diagram for the system Ta-Rh-O at 1273K was constructed. Also presented are temperature-composition diagrams for the ternary system at constant oxygen partial pressures (po(2)/p(o) = 0.212 and 10(-6)) calculated form the basic data.

The tie lines delineating ion-exchange equilibria between MCr2O4-MAl2O4 spinel solid solution, where M is either Mn or Co, and Cr2O3-Al2O3 solid solution with the corundum structure were determined at 1373 K by electron microprobe and E0AX point count analysis of the oxide phases equilibrated with metallic Co and Au-5% Mn. The component activities in the spinel solid solutions are derived from the tie lines and the thernodynamic data for Cr2O3-Al2O3 soiid solutions available hi the literature. The Gibbs free energies of mixing calculated from the experimental data are discussed in relation to the values derived from the cation distribution a.odel based on the site preference energies and assuming random mixing on both tetrahedral and octahedral sites. Positive deviations from ideality observed in this study suggest a miscibility gap for both series of spinel solid solutions at low temperatures in the absence of oxidation.

A microstructural and X-ray investigation of Ti-AI-Mo alloys Ti-31 Al-15 Mo, Ti-31 Al-13 Mo, Ti-31Al-9Mo and Ti-35Al-9Mo (containing the Ti3Al, TiAl and β phases) indicates that the existing phase diagram of the ternary system for this composition range published by Ge Dhzhi-Min and Pylaeva is in error above 1473 K. An analysis of phase relations reveals that the error has arisen from their use of the Ti-AI diagram due to Bumps, Kessler and Hansen as a basis for generating the ternary. It is shown that a phase diagram of the ternary, consistent with the experimental results, can be generated using a version of the Ti-AI system due to Margolin. Simple geometric arguments are used to build up a new semi-quantitative description of the Ti-AI-Mo system which can be used as a basis for a detailed investigation of phase equilibria in this system.

Theoretical optimization studies of the performance of a combustion driven premixed two-phase flow gasdynamic laser are presented. The steady inviscid nonreacting quasi-one-dimensional two-phase flow model including appropriate finite rate vibrational kinetic rates has been used in the analysis. The analysis shows that the effect of the particles on the optimum performance of the two-phase laser is very small. The results are presented in graphical form. We present a new algorithm for continuation of limit cycles of autonomous systems as a system parameter is varied. The algorithm works in phase space with an ordered set of points on the limit cycle, along with spline interpolation. Currently popular algorithms in bifurcation analysis packages compute time-domain approximations of limit cycles using either shooting or collocation. The present approach seems useful for continuation near saddle homoclinic points, where it encounters a corner while time-domain methods essentially encounter a discontinuity (a relatively short period of rapid variation). Other phase space-based algorithms use rescaled arclength in place of time, but subsequently resemble the time-domain methods. Compared to these, we introduce additional freedom through a variable stretching of arclength based on local curvature, through the use of an auxiliary index-based variable. Several numerical examples are presented. Comparisons with results from the popular package, MATCONT, are favorable close to saddle homoclinic points.
