Hydrogen plasma can be used for deoxidation of functional materials containing reactive metals in both bulk and thin film forms. Since the different species in the plasma are not in thermodynamic equilibrium, application of classical thermodynamics to the analysis of such a system is associated with some difficulties. While global equilibrium approaches have been tried, with and without additional approximations or constraints, there is some ambiguity in the results obtained. Presented in this article is the application of a local equilibrium concept to assess the thermodynamic limit of the reaction of each species present in the gas with oxides or oxygen dissolved in metals. Each reaction results in a different pal tial pressure of H2O. Because of the higher reactivity of the dissociated and ionized species and the larger thermodynamic driving force for reactions involving these species, they act as powerful reducing agents. It is necessary to remove the products of reaction from the plasma to prevent back reaction and gradual approach to global equilibrium. A quantitative description using the framework of the Ellingham-Richardson-Jeffes diagrams is presented.

Solid acid polymer electrolytes (SAPE) were synthesised using polyvinyl alcohol, potassium iodide and sulphuric acid in different molar ratios by solution cast technique. The temperature dependent nature of electrical conductivity and the impedance of the polymer electrolytes were determined along with the associated activation energy. The electrical conductivity at room temperature was found to be strongly depended on the amorphous nature of the polymers and H2SO4 concentration. The ac (100 Hz to 10 MHz) and dc conductivities of the polymer electrolytes with different H2SO4 concentrations were analyzed. A maximum dc conductivity of 1.05 x 10(-3) S cm(-1) has been achieved at ambient temperature for electrolytes containing 5 M H2SO4. The frequency and temperature dependent dielectric and electrical modulus properties of the SAPE were studied. The charge transport in the present polymer electrolyte was obtained using Wagner's polarization technique, which demonstrated the charge transport to be mainly due to ions. Using these solid acid polymer electrolytes novel Zn/SAPE/MnO2 solid state batteries were fabricated and their discharge capacity was calculated. An open circuit voltage of 1.758V was obtained for 5 M H2SO4 based Zn/SAPE/MnO2 battery. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The complete amino-acid sequence of sheep liver cytosolic serine hydroxymethyltransferase was determined from an analysis of tryptic, chymotryptic, CNBr and hydroxylamine peptides. Each subunit of sheep liver serine hydroxymethyltransferase consisted of 483 amino-acid residues. A comparison of this sequence with 8 other serine hydroxymethyltransferases revealed that a possible gene duplication event could have occurred after the divergence of animals and fungi. This analysis also showed independent duplication of SHMT genes in Neurospora crassa. At the secondary structural level, all the serine hydroxymethyltransferases belong to the alpha/beta category of proteins. The predicted secondary structure of sheep liver serine hydroxymethyltransferase was similar to that of the observed structure of tryptophan synthase, another pyridoxal 5'-phosphate containing enzyme, suggesting that sheep liver serine hydroxymethyltransferase might have a similar pyridoxal 5'-phosphate binding domain. In addition, a conserved glycine rich region, G L Q G G P, was identified in all the serine hydroxymethyltransferases and could be important in pyridoxal 5'-phosphate binding. A comparison of the cytosolic serine hydroxymethyltransferases from rabbit and sheep liver with other proteins sequenced from both these sources showed that serine hydroxymethyltransferase was a highly conserved protein. It was slightly less conserved than cytochrome c but better conserved than myoglobin, both of which are well known evolutionary markers. C67 and C203 were specifically protected by pyridoxal 5'-phosphate against modification with [C-14]iodoacetic acid, while C247 and C261 were buried in the native serine hydroxymethyltransferase. However, the cysteines are not conserved among the various serine hydroxymethyltransferases. The exact role of the cysteines in the reaction catalyzed by serine hydroxymethyltransferase remains to be elucidated.

The structure of Fe(Phen)(2)(NCS)(2) has been examined across the first-order spin-state transition by EXAFS with full multiple scattering analysis. The EXAFS data at 298 K can be satisfactorily assigned to the high-spin state, but the analysis of the low-temperature data at 90 K is not entirely unequivocal, although consistent with the predominant presence of the low-spin state. That some proportion of the high-spin state remains at low temperatures, well below the first-order transition, is clearly evidenced in the infrared spectra, suggesting possible sublattice ordering.

Variable cross-sectional area ducts are often used for attenuation at lower frequencies (of the order of firing frequency), whereas concentric tube resonators provide attenuation at relatively higher frequencies. In this paper, analysis of one dimensional control volume approach of conical concentric tube resonators is validated experimentally. The effects of mean flow and taper are investigated. The experimental setup is specially designed to measure the pressure transfer function in the form of Level Difference or Noise Reduction across the test muffler. It is shown that there is a reasonably good agreement between the predicted values of the Noise Reduction and the measured ones for incompressible mean flow as well as stationary medium. To evaluate the parameters in the two-parameter fracture model, i.e. the critical stress intensity factor and critical crack tip opening displacement for the fracture of plain concrete in Mode 1 for the given test configuration and geometry, considerable computational effort is necessary. A simple graphical method has been proposed using normalized fracture parameters for the three-point bend (3PB) notched specimen and the double-edged notched (DEN) specimen. A similar graphical method is proposed to compute the maximum load carrying capacity of a specimen, using the critical fracture parameters both for 3PB and DEN configurations.

This paper considers a firm real-time M/M/1 system, where jobs have stochastic deadlines till the end of service. A method for approximately specifying the loss ratio of the earliest-deadline-first scheduling policy along with exit control through the early discarding technique is presented. This approximation uses the arrival rate and the mean relative deadline, normalized with respect to the mean service time, for exponential and uniform distributions of relative deadlines. Simulations show that the maximum approximation error is less than 4% and 2% for the two distributions, respectively, for a wide range of arrival rates and mean relative deadlines. Extended x-ray absorption fine-structure studies have been performed at the Zn K and Cd K edges for a series of solid solutions of wurtzite Zn1-xCdxS samples with x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1.0, where the lattice parameter as a function of x evolves according to the well-known Vegard's law. In conjunction with extensive, large-scale first-principles electronic structure calculations with full geometry optimizations, these results establish that the percentage variation in the nearest-neighbor bond distances are lower by nearly an order of magnitude compared to what would be expected on the basis of lattice parameter variation, seriously undermining the chemical pressure concept. With experimental results that allow us to probe up to the third coordination shell distances, we provide a direct description of how the local structure, apparently inconsistent with the global structure, evolves very rapidly with interatomic distances to become consistent with it. We show that the basic features of this structural evolution with the composition can be visualized with nearly invariant Zn-S-4 and Cd-S-4 tetrahedral units retaining their structural integrity, while the tilts between these tetrahedral building blocks change with composition to conform to the changing lattice parameters according to the Vegard's law within a relatively short length scale. These results underline the limits of applicability of the chemical pressure concept that has been a favored tool of experimentalists to control physical properties of a large variety of condensed matter systems.

An experimental charge density analysis of an anti-TB drug ethionamide was carried out from high resolution X-ray diffraction at 100 K to understand its charge density distribution and electrostatic properties. The experimental results were validated from periodic theoretical charge density calculations performed using CRYSTAL09 at the B3LYP/6-31G** level of theory. The electron density rho(bcp)(r) and the Laplacian of electron density del(2)(rho bcp)(r) of the molecule calculated from both the methods display the charge density distribution of the ethionamide molecule in the crystal field. The electrostatic potential map shows a large electropositive region around the pyridine ring and a large electronegative region at the vicinity of the thiol atom. The calculated experimental dipole moment is 10.6D, which is higher than the value calculated from theory (8.2D). The topological properties of C-H center dot center dot center dot S, N-H center dot center dot center dot N and N-H center dot center dot center dot S hydrogen bonds were calculated, revealing their strength. The charge density analysis of the ethionamide molecule determined from both the experiment and theory gives the topological and electrostatic properties of the molecule, which allows to precisely understand the nature of intra and intermolecular interactions.
