Dual photoluminescence (PL) emission characteristics of Mn2+ doped ZnS (ZnS:Mn) quantum dots (QDs) have drawn a lot of attention recently. However, here we report the effect of thermal annealing on the PL emission characteristics of uncapped ZnS:Mn QDs of average sizes similar to 2-3 nm, synthesized by simple chemical precipitation method by using de-ionized (DI) water at room temperature. As-synthesized samples show dual PL emissions, having one UV PL band centred at similar to 400 nm and the other in the visible region similar to 610 nm. But when the samples are isochronally annealed for 2 h at 100-600 degrees C temperature range in air, similar to 90% quenching of Mn2+ related visible PL emission intensity takes place at the annealing temperature of 600 degrees C. X-ray diffraction data show that the as-synthesized cubic ZnS has been converted to wurtzite ZnO at 600 degrees C annealing temperature. The nanostructural properties of the samples are also determined by transmission electron micrograph, electron probe micro-analyser and UV-vis spectrophotometry. The photocatalytic property of the annealed ZnS:Mn sample has been demonstrated and photo-degradation efficiency of the as-synthesized and 600 degrees C annealed ZnS:Mn sample has been found out to be similar to 35% and similar to 61%, respectively, for the degradation of methylene blue dye under visible light irradiation. The synthesized QDs may find significant applications in future optoelectronic devices. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

An electrochemical lead ion sensor has been developed by modification of carbon paste electrode (CPE) using polypyrrole functionalized with iminodiacetic acid (IDA-PPy) containing carboxyl group. The electrochemical response of Pb2+ ion on the IDA-PPy modified CPE has been evaluated and the controling parameters have been optimized using differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV). The IDA-PPy modified CPE shows a linear correlation for Pb2+ concentrations in the range of 1 x 10(-6) to 5 x 10(-9) M and the lower detection limit of Pb2+ has been found to be 9.6 x 10(-9) M concentration. Other tested metal ions, namely Cu2+, Cd2+, Co2+, Hg2+, Ni2+ and Zn2+, do not exhibit any voltammetric stripping response below 1 x 10(-7) M concentration. However, the Pb2+ response is affected in the presence of molar equivalents or higher concentrations of Cu2+, Cd2+ and Co2+ ions in binary systems with Pb2+, consequent to their ability to bind with iminodiacetic acid, while Hg2+, Ni2+ and Zn2+ do not interfere at all. A good correlation has been observed between the lead concentrations as analyzed by DPASV using IDA-PPy modified CPE and atomic absorption spectrophotometry for a lead containing industrial effluent sample. Growing demand for urban built spaces has resulted in unprecedented exponential rise in production and consumption of building materials in construction. Production of materials requires significant energy and contributes to pollution and green house gas (GHG) emissions. Efforts aimed at reducing energy consumption and pollution involved with the production of materials fundamentally requires their quantification. Embodied energy (EE) of building materials comprises the total energy expenditure involved in the material production including all upstream processes such as raw material extraction and transportation. The current paper deals with EE of a few common building materials consumed in bulk in Indian construction industry. These values have been assessed based on actual industrial survey data. Current studies on EE of building materials lack agreement primarily with regard to method of assessment and energy supply assumptions (whether expressed in terms of end use energy or primary energy). The current paper examines the suitability of two basic methods; process analysis and input-output method and identifies process analysis as appropriate for EE assessment in the Indian context. A comparison of EE values of building materials in terms of the two energy supply assumptions has also been carried out to investigate the associated discrepancy. The results revealed significant difference in EE of materials whose production involves significant electrical energy expenditure relative to thermal energy use. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. In the present paper, we present the structure and composition of tropical evergreen and deciduous forests in the Western Ghats monitored under a long-term programme involving Indian Institute of Science, Earthwatch and volunteer investigators from HSBC. Currently, there is limited evidence on the status and dynamics of tropical forests in the context of human disturbance and climate change. Observations made in this study show that the `more disturbed' evergreen and one of the deciduous plots have low species diversity compared to the less-disturbed forests. There are also variations in the size class structure in the more and `less disturbed' forests of all the locations. The variation is particularly noticeable in the DBH size class 10 - 15 cm category. When biomass stock estimates are considered, there was no significant difference between evergreen and deciduous forests. The difference in biomass stocks between `less disturbed' and `more disturbed' forests within a forest type is also low. Thus, the biomass and carbon stock has not been impacted despite the dependence of communities on the forests. Periodic and long-term monitoring of the status and dynamics of the forests is necessary in the context of potential increased human pressure and climate change. There is, therefore, a need to inform the communities of the impact of extraction and its effect on regeneration so as to motivate them to adopt what may be termed as ``adaptive resource management'', so as to sustain the flow of forest products.

The influences of physical stimuli such as surface elasticity, topography, and chemistry over mesenchymal stem cell proliferation and differentiation are well investigated. In this context, a fundamentally different approach was adopted, and we have demonstrated the interplay of inherent substrate conductivity, defined chemical composition of cellular microenvironment, and intermittent delivery of electric pulses to drive mesenchymal stem cell differentiation toward osteogenesis. For this, conducting polyaniline (PANI) substrates were coated with collagen type 1 (Coll) alone or in association with sulfated hyaluronan (sHya) to form artificial extracellular matrix (aECM), which mimics the native microenvironment of bone tissue. Further, bone marrow derived human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) were cultured on these moderately conductive (10(-4)10(-3) S/cm) aECM coated PANI substrates and exposed intermittently to pulsed electric field (PEF) generated through transformer-like coupling (TLC) approach over 28 days. On the basis of critical analysis over an array of end points, it was inferred that Coll/sHya coated PANI (PANI/Coll/sHya) substrates had enhanced proliferative capacity of hMSCs up to 28 days in culture, even in the absence of PEF stimulation. On the contrary, the adopted PEF stimulation protocol (7 ms rectangular pulses, 3.6 mV/cm, 10 Hz) is shown to enhance osteogenic differentiation potential of hMSCs. Additionally, PEF stimulated hMSCs had also displayed different morphological characteristics as their nonstimulated counterparts. Concomitantly, earlier onset of ALP activity was also observed on PANI/Coll/sHya substrates and resulted in more calcium deposition. Moreover, real-time polymerase chain reaction results indicated higher mRNA levels of alkaline phosphatase and osteocalcin, whereas the expression of other osteogenic markers such as Runt-related transcription factor 2, Col1A, and osteopontin exhibited a dynamic pattern similar to control cells that are cultured in osteogenic medium. Taken together, our experimental results illustrate the interplay of multiple parameters such as substrate conductivity, electric field stimulation, and aECM coating on the modulation of hMSC proliferation and differentiation in vitro.

Enrichment of metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) has been accomplished by several means, including new extraction and synthetic procedures and by interaction with metal nanoparticles as well as electron donor molecules. In the presence of Fe(CO)(5) the arc discharge method yields nearly pure metallic nanotubes. Fluorous chemistry involving the preferential diazotization of metallic SWNTs offers a good procedure of obtaining the pure metallic species. Interaction of gold or platinum nanoparticles as well as of electron-donor molecules such as aniline and tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) transform semiconducting SWNTs into metallic ones. Raman and electroni spectroscopies provide ideal means to monitor enrichment of metallic SWNTs.

Chitosan grafted poly(alkyl methacrylate)s (namely chitosan grafted poly(methyl methacrylate) (ChgPMMA), chitosan grafted poly(ethyl methacrylate)(ChgPEMA), chitosan grafted poly(butyl methacrylate) (ChgPBMA) and chitosan grafted poly(hexyl methacrylate) (ChgPHMA)) were synthesized and characterized by using FT-IR and C-13 NMR techniques. The adsorption batch experiments on these grafted copolymers were conducted by using an anionic sulfonated dye. Orange-G. A pseudo-second-order kinetic model was used to determine the kinetics of adsorption. The effect of grafting, effect of process variables and the effect of different sulfonated anionic dyes (Orange-C, Congo Red, Remazol Brill Blue R and Methyl Blue) on the adsorption kinetics was determined. The Langmuir and Freundlich models were used to fit the adsorption isotherms and from the values of correlation coefficients (R-2), it was observed that the experimental data fits very well to the Langmuir model. The values of the maximum adsorption capacity of the adsorbents follow the order: ChgPMMA > ChgPEMA > ChgPBMA > ChgPHMA > chitosan. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The ultrasonic degradation of two dyes, Rhodamine B (C28H31ClN2O3) and Rhodamine Blue (C28H32N2O3), were studied in the absence of catalyst and in the presence of two catalysts (combustion-synthesized anatase TiO2 and commercial Degussa P-25 TiO2. The rate of degradation of catalyzed reaction was higher than that obtained with in the absence of the catalysts. Among the catalysts, combustion-synthesized anatase TiO2 degraded the dyes faster when compared to the degradation with commercial Degussa P-25 catalyst. A Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetic model was developed and the kinetic rate parameters were determined. The effect of other operating parameters, such as initial concentration, pH, temperature, and power intensity, was also investigated. The degradation rate increased with decreasing pH, increasing temperature, and higher intensity.

The mechanism of interaction of 0-amino-D-serine (OADS) with sheep liver serine hydroxymethyltransferase (EC 2.1.2.1) (SHMT) was established by measuring changes in the enzyme activity, absorption spectra, circular dichroism (CD) spectra, and stopped-flow spectrophotometry. OADS was a reversible noncompetitive inhibitor (Ki = 1.8 pM) when serine was the varied substrate. The first step in the interaction of OADS with the enzyme was the disruption of enzyme-Schiff base, characterized by the rapid disappearance of absorbance at 425 nm (6.5 X lo3 M-' s-') and CD intensity at 430 nm. Concomitantly, there was a rapid increase in absorbance and CD intensity at 390 nm. The spectral properties of this intermediate enabled its identification as pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP). These changes were followed by a slow unimolecular step (2 X s-') leading to the formation of PLP-OADS oxime, which was confirmed by its absorbance and fluorescence spectra and retention time on high-performance liquid chromatography. The PLP-OADS oxime was displaced from the enzyme by the addition of PLP as evidenced by the restoration of complete enzyme activity as well as by the spectral properties. The unique feature of the mechanism proposed for the interaction of OADS with sheep liver SHMT was the formation of PLP as an intermediate.

In this paper, we describe a method for feature extraction and classification of characters manually isolated from scene or natural images. Characters in a scene image may be affected by low resolution, uneven illumination or occlusion. We propose a novel method to perform binarization on gray scale images by minimizing energy functional. Discrete Cosine Transform and Angular Radial Transform are used to extract the features from characters after normalization for scale and translation. We have evaluated our method on the complete test set of Chars74k dataset for English and Kannada scripts consisting of handwritten and synthesized characters, as well as characters extracted from camera captured images. We utilize only synthesized and handwritten characters from this dataset as training set. Nearest neighbor classification is used in our experiments.

Several concepts have been developed in the recent years for nanomaterial based integrated MEMS platform in order to accelerate the process of biological sample preparation followed by selective screening and identification of target molecules. In this context, there exist several challenges which need to be addressed in the process of electrical lysis of biological cells. These are due to (i) low resource settings while achieving maximal lysis (ii) high throughput of target molecules to be detected (iii) automated extraction and purification of relevant molecules such as DNA and protein from extremely small volume of sample (iv) requirement of fast, accurate and yet scalable methods (v) multifunctionality toward process monitoring and (vi) downward compatibility with already existing diagnostic protocols. This paper reports on the optimization of electrical lysis process based on various different nanocomposite coated electrodes placed in a microfluidic channel. The nanocomposites are synthesized using different nanomaterials like Zinc nanorod dispersion in polymer. The efficiency of electrical lysis with various different electrode coatings has been experimentally verified in terms of DNA concentration, amplification and protein yield. The influence of the coating thickness on the injection current densities has been analyzed. We further correlate experimentally the current density vs. voltage relationship with the extent of bacterial cell lysis. A coupled multiphysics based simulation model is used to predict the cell trajectories and lysis efficiencies under various electrode boundary conditions as estimated from experimental results. Detailed in-situ fluorescence imaging and spectroscopy studies are performed to validate various hypotheses.

This paper discusses a novel high-speed approach for human action recognition in H. 264/AVC compressed domain. The proposed algorithm utilizes cues from quantization parameters and motion vectors extracted from the compressed video sequence for feature extraction and further classification using Support Vector Machines (SVM). The ultimate goal of our work is to portray a much faster algorithm than pixel domain counterparts, with comparable accuracy, utilizing only the sparse information from compressed video. Partial decoding rules out the complexity of full decoding, and minimizes computational load and memory usage, which can effect in reduced hardware utilization and fast recognition results. The proposed approach can handle illumination changes, scale, and appearance variations, and is robust in outdoor as well as indoor testing scenarios. We have tested our method on two benchmark action datasets and achieved more than 85% accuracy. The proposed algorithm classifies actions with speed (>2000 fps) approximately 100 times more than existing state-of-the-art pixel-domain algorithms.

A new series of donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) type luminescent mesogens carrying 2-methoxy-3-cyanopyridine as a central core linked with variable alkoxy chain lengths (m = 6 and 8) as terminal substituents was synthesized and characterized using spectral methods. The newly synthesized molecules were subjected to single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), differential scanning calorimetric (DSC), polarizing optical microscopy (POM), and fluorescence emission studies in order to ascertain their mesogenic and photophysical properties. The SCXRD data on 4a and 4b reveal that the presence of short intermolecular contacts, viz. C-H center dot center dot center dot N, C-H center dot center dot center dot O, C-H center dot center dot center dot pi, and pi center dot center dot center dot pi interactions, is responsible for their crystal packing. The measured torsion angle values indicate that molecules possess distorted non-planar structure. The DSC, POM, and PXRD studies confirm that all the molecules show thermotropic liquid crystalline behaviour and exhibit rectangular columnar phase. Further, their UV-visible and fluorescence spectral studies reveal that the target molecules are luminescent displaying a strong absorption band in the range of 335-340 nm and a blue fluorescence emission band in the range of 395-425 nm (both in solution and film state) with good fluorescence quantum yields (10-49 %).
