Microwave sources used in present day applications are either multiplied source derived from basic quartz crystals, or frequency synthesizers. The frequency multiplication method increases FM noise power considerably, and has very low efficiency in addition to being very complex and expensive. The complexity and cost involved demands a simple, compact and tunable microwave source. A tunable dielectric resonator oscillator(DRO) is an ideal choice for such applications. In this paper, the simulation, design and realization of a tunable DRO with a center frequency of 6250 MHz is presented. Simulation has been carried out on HP-Ees of CAD software. Mechanical and electronic tuning features are provided. The DRO operates over a frequency range of 6235 MHz to 6375 MHz. The output power is +5.33 dBm at centre frequency. The performance of the DRO is as per design with respect to phase noise, harmonic levels and tunability. and hence, can conveniently be used for the intended applications.

In this paper, the study of a third-order mechanical oscillator is presented by demonstrating its equivalence to the well-known R.C. multivibrator with two additional reactive elements. The conditions for the oscillator's possession of periodic solutions are presented. It is also shown that under certain conditions, the study of the given third-order autonomous system can be reduced to the study of an equivalent second-order, non-autonomous system.

In the present note we have studied the harmonic and anharmonic oscillations of cylindrical plasma using Lagrangian formalism. In order to study the harmonic oscillations, the equations are linearized and the resulting equation for the displacement has been numerically solved. For situations present in thermonuclear reactors, the presence of axial magnetic field is found necessary to make the periods of oscillation to become comparable with the time required for the thermonuclear reactions to set in. A detailed analysis of the anharmonic oscillations reveals that the significant interaction is between the first and the second mode. The fundamental period of anharmonic oscillation is more than the corresponding period of harmonic oscillations by 9·2%. Graphs have been drawn for the amplitudes of relative variations in density and magnetic field and of the time-varying part of anharmonic oscillation.

Using path integrals, we derive an exact expression-valid at all times t-for the distribution P(Q,t) of the heat fluctuations Q of a Brownian particle trapped in a stationary harmonic well. We find that P(Q, t) can be expressed in terms of a modified Bessel function of zeroth order that in the limit t > infinity exactly recovers the heat distribution function obtained recently by Imparato et al. Phys. Rev. E 76, 050101(R) (2007)] from the approximate solution to a Fokker-Planck equation. This long-time result is in very good agreement with experimental measurements carried out by the same group on the heat effects produced by single micron-sized polystyrene beads in a stationary optical trap. An earlier exact calculation of the heat distribution function of a trapped particle moving at a constant speed v was carried out by van Zon and Cohen Phys. Rev. E 69, 056121 (2004)]; however, this calculation does not provide an expression for P(Q, t) itself, but only its Fourier transform (which cannot be analytically inverted), nor can it be used to obtain P(Q, t) for the case v=0.

A precise X-ray investigation is carried out to probe the lowest-order anharmonic contribution of the atomic potential of the germanium atom. A total number of 1052 reflections (h + k + l = 4n and 4n +/- 1) are precisely measured at room temperature using a spherical single crystal of germanium and using a Nonius CAD-4 X-ray diffractometer with crystal monochromatized MoKalpha radiation. A least-square refinement program is used to refine the harmonic and anharmonic thermal parameters of the crystal. The refinement gives beta(Ge) = (-0.749 +/- 1.79) x 10-(16) J nm-3 with B(Ge) = (0.528 +/- 0.004) x 10(-2) nm2. The reliability index (R) amounts to 1.71% for germanium.

Using a total of 1052 Bragg reflections of silicon, an X-ray investigation has been carried out to deduce the anharmonic thermal parameter beta, apart from the estimation of the harmonic contribution of the thermal vibration at room temperature. Reflections of type h + k + l = 4n, and 4n +/- 1 were used to estimate these parameters using MoKalpha radiation and a Nonius CAD-4 X-ray diffractometer. We obtain B(Si) = 0.451 (0.008) angstrom2 and beta(Si) = 0.279(2.630) eV angstrom-3 with R = 3.12%. The present B and beta values are in very good agreement with the earlier studies.

Recent simulations of the stretching of tethered biopolymers at a constant speed v (Ponmurugan and Vemparala, 2011 Phys. Rev. E 84 060101(R)) have suggested that for any time t, the distribution of the fluctuating forces f responsible for chain deformation is governed by a relation of the form P(+ f)/ P(- f) = expgamma f], gamma being a coefficient that is solely a function of v and the temperature T. This result, which is reminiscent of the fluctuation theorems applicable to stochastic trajectories involving thermodynamic variables, is derived in this paper from an analytical calculation based on a generalization of Mazonka and Jarzynski's classic model of dragged particle dynamics Mazonka and Jarzynski, 1999 arXiv:cond-\textbackslashmat/9912121v1]. However, the analytical calculations suggest that the result holds only if t >> 1 and the force fluctuations are driven by white rather than colored noise; they further suggest that the coefficient gamma in the purported theorem varies not as v(0.15)T-(0.7), as indicated by the simulations, but as vT(-1).

An array of identical maps with Ising symmetry, with both positive and negative couplings, is studied. We divide the maps into two groups, with positive intra-group couplings and negative inter-group couplings. This leads to antisynchronization between the two groups which have the same stability properties as the synchronized state. Introducing a certain degree of randomness in signs of these couplings destabilizes the anti-synchronized state. Further increasing the randomness in signs of these couplings leads to oscillator death. This is essentially a frustration induced phenomenon. We explain the observed results using the theory of random matrices with nonzero mean. We briefly discuss applications to coupled differential equations. (C) 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.

An area-efficient, wideband RF frequency synthesizer, which simultaneously generates multiple local oscillator (LO) signals, is designed. It is suitable for parallel wideband RF spectrum sensing in cognitive radios. The frequency synthesizer consists of an injection locked oscillator cascade (ILOC) where all the LO signals are derived from a single reference oscillator. The ILOC is implemented in a 130-nm technology with an active area of . It generates 4 uniformly spaced LO carrier frequencies from 500 MHz to 2 GHz. This design is the first known implementation of a CMOS based ILOC for wide-band RF spectrum sensing applications.

The quantum statistical mechanical propagator for a harmonic oscillator with a time-dependent force constant, m omega(2)(t), has been investigated in the past and was found to have only a formal solution in terms of the solutions of certain ordinary differential equations. Such path integrals are frequently encountered in semiclassical path integral evaluations and having exact analytical expressions for such path integrals is of great interest. In a previous work, we had obtained the exact propagator for motion in an arbitrary time-dependent harmonic potential in the overdamped limit of friction using phase space path integrals in the context of Levy flights - a result that can be easily extended to Brownian motion. In this paper, we make a connection between the overdamped Brownian motion and the imaginary time propagator of quantum mechanics and thereby get yet another way to evaluate the latter exactly. We find that explicit analytic solution for the quantum statistical mechanical propagator can be written when the time-dependent force constant has the form omega(2)(t) = lambda(2)(t) - d lambda(t)/dt where lambda(t) is any arbitrary function of t and use it to evaluate path integrals which have not been evaluated previously. We also employ this method to arrive at a formal solution of the propagator for both Levy flights and Brownian subjected to a time-dependent harmonic potential in the underdamped limit of friction. To meet the growing demands of data traffic in long haul communication, it is necessary to efficiently use the low-loss region(C-band) of the optical spectrum, by increasing the no. of optical channels and increasing the bit rate on each channel But narrow pulses occupy higher spectral bandwidth. To circumvent this problem, higher order modulation schemes such as QPSK and QAM can be used to modulate the bits, which increases the spectral efficiency without demanding any extra spectral bandwidth. On the receiver side, to meet a satisfy, a given BER, the received optical signal requires to have minimum OSNR. In our study in this paper, we analyses for different modulation schemes, the OSNR required with and without preamplifier. The theoretical limit of OSNR requirement for a modulation scheme is compared for a given link length by varying the local oscillator (LO) power. Our analysis shows that as we increase the local oscillator (LO) power, the OSNR requirement decreases for a given BER. Also a combination of preamplifier and local oscillator (LO) gives the OSNR closest to theoretical limit.

We have carried out temperature- and pressure-dependent Raman and x-ray measurements on single crystals of Tb2Ti2O7. We attribute the observed anomalous temperature dependence of phonons to phonon-phonon anharmonic interactions. The quasiharmonic and anharmonic contributions to the temperature-dependent changes in phonon frequencies are estimated quantitatively using mode Grüneisen parameters derived from pressure-dependent Raman experiments and bulk modulus from high-pressure x-ray measurements. Further, our Raman and x-ray data suggest a subtle structural deformation of the pyrochlore lattice at ~9 GPa. We discuss possible implications of our results on the spin-liquid behavior of Tb2Ti2O7.

A novel thermistor-based temperature indicator using an RC oscillator and an up/down counter has been developed and described. The indicator provides linear performance over a wide dynamic temperature range of 0-100°C. This indicator is free from the error due to lead resistances of the thermistor and gives a maximum error of ±0 · 1°C in the range 0-100°C. Test results are given to support the theory.
