Density measurements on large single-crystal specimens of La2NiO4+δ and Pr2NiO4+δ show that oxygen nonstoichiometry arises from the presence of excess lattice oxygen. X-ray photoelectron spectra as well as X-ray absorption edge studies provide no evidence for the existence of Ni3+ in these oxygen-excess nickelates under the conditions of the measurements. Transmission electron microscopy has revealed a novel type of exsolution process of the stoichiometric phase out of nonstoichiometric La2NiO4 during heating in CO2 at 870 K for 3 h. An interpretation of the results in terms of the existence of peroxide species within the conducting layers is proposed.

A solid-state electrochemical cell, with yttria-stabilized zirconia as the electrolyte and pure O-2 gas at 0.1 MPa as the reference electrode, has been used to measure the oxygen chemical potential corresponding to the equilibrium between beta-Rh2O3 and RhO2 in the temperature range from 850 to 1050K. Using standard Gibbs energy of formation of beta-Rh2O3 available in the literature and the measured oxygen potential, the standard Gibbs free energy of formation of RhO2 is derived as a function of temperature: Delta G(f)degrees(RhO2)(+/- 71)/J mol(-1) = 238,418 + 179.89T Using an estimated value of Delta C-p degrees; for the formation reaction of RhO2 from its elements, the standard enthalpy of formation, standard entropy and isobaric heat capacity of RhO2 at 298.15 K are evaluated: Delta H-f degrees (298.15 K)(+/- 164)/kJ mol(-1) = -244.94, S degrees (298.15 K)(+/- 3.00)/J mol(-1) K-1 = 45.11 and C-p degrees(298.15 K)(+/- 2.6)1mol(-1) K-1 =64.28. Characterization of silver- and gold-related defects in gallium arsenide is carried out. These impurities were introduced during the thermal diffusion process and the related defects are characterized by deep-level transient spectroscopy and photoluminescence. The silver-related center in GaAs shows a 0.238 eV photoluminescence line corresponding to no-phonon transition, whereas its thermal ionization energy is found to be 0.426 eV. The thermal activation energy of the gold-related center in GaAs is 0.395 eV, but there is no corresponding luminescence signal.

The influence of the pedogenic and climatic contexts on the formation and preservation of pedogenic carbonates in a climosequence in the Western Ghats (Karnataka Plateau, South West India) has been studied. Along the climosequence, the current mean annual rainfall (MAR) varies within a 80 km transect from 6000 mm at the edge of the Plateau to 500 mm inland. Pedogenic carbonates occur in the MAR range of 500-1200 mm. In the semi-arid zone (MAR: 500-900 mm), carbonates occur (i) as rhick hardpan calcretes on pediment slopes and (ii) as nodular horizons in polygenic black soils (i.e. vertisols). In the sub-humid zone (MAR: 900-1500 mm), pedogenic carbonates are disseminated in the black soil matrices either as loose, irregular and friable nodules of millimetric size or as indurated botryoidal nodules of centimetric to pluricentimetric size. They also occur at the top layers of the saprolite either as disseminated pluricentimetric indurated nodules or carbonate-cemented lumps of centimetric to decimetric size. Chemical and isotopic (Sr-87/Sr-86) compositions of the carbonate fraction were determined after leaching with 0.25 N HCl. The corresponding residual fractions containing both primary minerals and authigenic clays were digested separately and analyzed. The trend defined by the Sr-87/Sr-86 signatures of both labile carbonate fractions and corresponding residual fractions indicates that a part of the labile carbonate fraction is genetically linked to the local soil composition. Considering the residual fraction of each sample as the most likely lithogenic source of Ca in carbonates, it is estimated that from 24% to 82% (55% on average) of Ca is derived from local bedrock weathering, leading to a consumption of an equivalent proportion of atmospheric CO2. These values indicate that climatic conditions were humid enough to allow silicate weathering: MAR at the time of carbonate formation likely ranged from 400 to 700 mm, which is 2- to 3-fold less than the current MAR at these locations. The Sr, U and Mg contents and the (U-234/U-238) activity ratio in the labile carbonate fraction help to understand the conditions of carbonate formation. The relatively high concentrations of Sr, U and Mg in black soil carbonates may indicate fast growth and accumulation compared to carbonates in saprolite, possibly due to a better confinement of the pore waters which is supported by their high (U-234/U-238) signatures, and/or to higher content of dissolved carbonates in the pore waters. The occurrence of Ce, Mn and Fe oxides in the cracks of carbonate reflects the existence of relatively humid periods after carbonate formation. The carbonate ages determined by the U-Th method range from 1.33 +/- 0.84 kyr to 7.5 +/- 2.7 kyr and to a cluster of five ages around 20 kyr, i.e. the Last Glacial Maximum period. The young occurrences are only located in the black soils, which therefore constitute sensitive environments for trapping and retaining atmospheric CO2 even on short time scales. The maximum age of carbonates depends on their location in the climatic gradient: from about 20 kyr for centimetric nodules at Mule Hole (MAR = 1100 mm/yr) to 200 kyr for the calcrete at Gundlupet (MAR = 700 mm/yr, Durand et al., 2007). The intensity of rainfall during wet periods would indeed control the lifetime of pedogenic carbonates and thus the duration of inorganic carbon storage in soils. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. In order to describe the atmospheric turbulence which limits the resolution of long-exposure images obtained using ground-based large telescopes, a simplified model of a speckle pattern, reducing the complexity of calculating field-correlations of very high order, is presented. Focal plane correlations are used instead of correlations in the spatial frequency domain. General tripple correlations for a point source and for a binary are calculated and it is shown that they are not a strong function of the binary separation. For binary separations close to the diffraction limit of the telescope, the genuine triple correlation technique ensures a better SNR than the near-axis Knox-Thompson technique. The simplifications allow a complete analysis of the noise properties at all levels of light.

For the specific case of binary stars, this paper presents signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) calculations for the detection of the parity (the side of the brighter component) of the binary using the double correlation method. This double correlation method is a focal plane version of the well-known Knox-Thompson method used in speckle interferometry. It is shown that SNR for parity detection using double correlation depends linearly on binary separation. This new result was entirely missed by previous analytical calculations dealing with a point source. It is concluded that, for magnitudes relevant to the present day speckle interferometry and for binary separations close to the diffraction limit, speckle masking has better SNR for parity detection.

We reported the presence of a 80 kDa polypeptide in porcine follicular fluid that inhibited the binding of 125I-radiolabelled hFSH as well as hCG to the rat ovarian gonadotropin receptors. In the present study, the biological activity of the receptor binding inhibitor is determined using an in vitro bioassay procedure. Granulosa cells isolated from PMSG primed immature rat ovaries respond to exogenously added gonadotropins in terms of progesterone production. Addition of fractions containing the gonadotropin receptor binding inhibitory activity inhibited progesterone production stimulated by the gonadotropins in a dose-dependent fashion. The receptor binding inhibitory activity was also capable of inhibiting progesterone production stimulated by PMSG, which has both FSH- and LH-like activities in rats. In contrast, progesterone production stimulated by dbcAMP was not inhibited by the receptor binding inhibitor. This result indicates that the site of action of the inhibitor is proximal to the formation of the cAMP. The above observations point out to a possible role for this factor in modulating gonadotropin activity at the ovarian level.

Plants exhibit certain intra-fruit positional patterns in the development of seeds. These patterns have been generally interpreted to be a consequence of resource and fertilization gradients. However, such positional patterns might also be shaped by the 'neighbour effect', wherein formation and development of a seed at any position might positively or negatively influence those of other seeds in the neighbourhood. In this article, we examine the role of such neighbour effect in shaping the positional pattern of seeds in the pods of Erythrina suberosa. The results suggest the existence of a positive neighbour effect leading to a higher frequency of seeds in contiguous positions.

Background: Duration of seizure by itself is an insufficient criterion for a therapeutically adequate seizure in ECT. Therefore, measures of seizure EEG other than its duration need to be explored as indices of seizure adequacy and predictors of treatment response. We measured the EEG seizure using a geometrical method-fractal dimension (FD) and examined if this measure predicted remission. Methods: Data from an efficacy study on melancholic depressives (n = 40) is used for the present exploration. They received thrice or once weekly ECTs, each schedule at two energy levels - high or low energy level. FD was computed for early-, mid- and post-seizure phases of the ictal EEG. Average of the two channels was used for analysis. Results: Two-thirds of the patients (n = 25) were remitted at the end of 2 weeks. As expected, a significantly higher proportion of patients receiving thrice weekly ECT remitted than in patients receiving once weekly ECT. Smaller post-seizure FD at first ECT is the only variable which predicted remission status after six ECTs. within the once weekly ECT group too, smaller post-seizure FD was associated with remission status. Conclusions: Post-seizure FD is proposed as a novel measure of seizure adequacy and predictor of treatment response. Clinical implications: Seizure measures at first ECT may guide selection of ECT schedule to optimize ECT. Limitations: The study examined short term antidepressant effects only. The results may not be generalized to medication-resistant depressives. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Background. Substantial evidence exists for HLA and other host genetic factors being determinants of susceptibility or resistance to infectious diseases. However, very little information is available on the role of host genetic factors in HIV-TB coinfection. Hence, a longitudinal study was undertaken to investigate HLA associations in a cohort of HIV seropositive individuals with and without TB in Bangalore, South India. Methods. A cohort of 238 HIV seropositive subjects were typed for HLA-A, B, and DR by PCR-SSP and followed up for 5 years or till manifestation of Tuberculosis. HLA data of 682 HIV Negative healthy renal donors was used as control. Results. The ratio of males and females in HIV cohort was comparable (50.4% and 49.6%). But the incidence of TB was markedly lower in females (12.6%,) than males (25.6%). Further, HLA-B* 57 frequency in HIV cohort was significantly higher among females without TB (21.6%, 19/88) than males (1.7%, 1/59); P = 0.0046; OR = 38. CD4 counts also were higher among females in this cohort. Conclusion. This study suggests that HIV positive women with HLA-B* 57 have less occurrence of TB as compared to males.

The beta-hydroxyacyl-acyl carrier protein dehydratase of Plasmodium falciparum (PfFabZ) catalyzes the third and important reaction of the fatty acid elongation cycle. The crystal structure of PfFabZ is available in hexameric (active) and dimeric (inactive) forms. However, PfFabZ has not been crystallized with any bound inhibitors until now. We have designed a new condition to crystallize PfFabZ with its inhibitors bound in the active site, and determined the crystal structures of four of these complexes. This is the first report on any FabZ enzyme with active site inhibitors that interact directly with the catalytic residues. Inhibitor binding not only stabilized the substrate binding loop but also revealed that the substrate binding tunnel has an overall shape of ``U''. In the crystal structures, residue Phe169 located in the middle of the tunnel was found to be in two different conformations, open and closed. Thus, Phe169, merely by changing its side chain conformation, appears to be controlling the length of the tunnel to make it suitable for accommodating longer substrates. The volume of the substrate binding tunnel is determined by the sequence as well as by the conformation of the substrate binding loop region and varies between organisms for accommodating fatty acids of different chain lengths. This report on the crystal structures of the complexes of PfFabZ provides the structural basis of the inhibitory mechanism of the enzyme that could be used to improve the potency of inhibitors against an important component of fatty acid synthesis common to many infectious organisms.
