FET based MEMS microphones comprise of a flexible diaphragm that works as the moving gate of the transistor. The integrated electromechanical transducer can be made more sensitive to external sound pressure either by increasing the mechanical or the electrical sensitivities. We propose a method of increasing the overall sensitivity of the microphone by increasing its electrical sensitivity. The proposed microphone uses the transistor biased in the sub-threshold region where the drain current depends exponentially on the difference between the gate-to-source voltage and the threshold voltage. The device is made more sensitive without adding any complexity in the mechanical design of the diaphragm.

The x-ray crystal structure of the tetrameric T-antigen-binding lectin from peanut, M(r) 110,000, has been determined by using the multiple isomorphous replacement method and refined to an R value of 0.218 for 22,155 reflections within the 10- to 2.95-A resolution range. Each subunit has essentially the same characteristic tertiary fold that is found in other legume lectins. The structure, however, exhibits an unusual quaternary arrangement of subunits. Unlike other well-characterized tetrameric proteins with identical subunits, peanut lectin has neither 222 (D2) nor fourfold (C4) symmetry. A noncrystallographic twofold axis relates two halves of the molecule. The two monomers in each half are related by a local twofold axis. The mutual disposition of the axes is such that they do not lead to a closed point group. Furthermore, the structure of peanut lectin demonstrates that differences in subunit arrangement in legume lectins could be due to factors intrinsic to the protein molecule and, contrary to earlier suggestions, are not necessarily caused by interactions involving covalently linked sugar. The structure provides a useful framework for exploring the structural basis and the functional implications of the variability in the subunit arrangement in legume lectins despite all of them having nearly the same subunit structure, and also for investigating the general problem of "open" quaternary assembly in oligomeric proteins.

In this paper we have studied the flow of a micropolar fluid, whose constitutive equations were given by Eringen, in two dimensional plane flow. In two notes, we have discussed the validity of the boundary condition v=a ω and its effect on the entire flow field. We have restricted our study to the case when Stokes' approximation is valid, i. e. slow motion for it is difficult to uncouple the equations in the most general case.

Dipole moment measurements have been made in the case of a few aromatic hydrocarbon picrates, the values obtained being 2·18, 2·25, 2·97 (all in Debye units) for picrates of naphthalene, acenaphthene and phenanthrene respectively and the results discussed in terms of Mulliken's theory. Measurements have also been extended to include a few salt-like heterocyclic amine picrates.

The concept of a fully-developed flow based on the hypothesis of selective memory is here applied to general wall-jet type flows. In the presence of a (constant) external stream, the free-stream velocity and the jet momentum flux are taken to be the chief quantities governing the development of the wall jet: two additional nondimensional parameters, representing a momentum flux Reynolds number and the relative momentum defect in the initial boundary layer, are shown to have only a secondary effect on the fully-developed flow. The standard correlations so determined are also found to predict quite well the flow development in Gartshore and Newman's experiments on wall jets in adverse pressure gradients; possible reasons for this somewhat surprising result are discussed. Finally it is shown, by application to the still-air case, that the parameters discovered in incompressible flow are, with appropriate but straightforward modification, successful in describing compressible wall jets also.

A fast algorithm for the computation of maximum compatible classes (mcc) among the internal states of an incompletely specified sequential machine is presented in this paper. All the maximum compatible classes are determined by processing compatibility matrices of progressingly diminishing order, whose total number does not exceed (p + m), where p is the largest cardinality among these classes, and m is the number of such classes. Consequently the algorithm is specially suitable for the state minimization of very large sequential machines as encountered in vlsi circuits and systems.

Malignant astrocytoma includes anaplastic astrocytoma (grade III) and glioblastoma (grade IV). Among them, glioblastoma is the most common primary brain tumor with dismal responses to all therapeutic modalities. We performed a large-scale, genome-wide microRNA (miRNA) (n=756) expression profiling of 26 glioblastoma, 13 anaplastic astrocytoma and 7 normal brain samples with an aim to find deregulated miRNA in malignant astrocytoma. We identified several differentially regulated miRNAs between these groups, which could differentiate glioma grades and normal brain as recognized by PCA. More importantly, we identified a most discriminatory 23-miRNA expression signature, by using PAM, which precisely distinguished glioblastoma from anaplastic astrocytoma with an accuracy of 95%. The differential expression pattern of nine miRNAs was further validated by real-time RT-PCR on an independent set of malignant astrocytomas (n-72) and normal samples (n=7). Inhibition of two glioblastoma-upregulated miRNAs (miR-21 and miR-23a) and exogenous overexpression of two glioblastoma-downregulated miRNAs (miR-218 and miR-219-5p) resulted in reduced soft agar colony formation but showed varying effects on cell proliferation and chemosensitivity. Thus we have identified the miRNA expression signature for malignant astrocytoma, in particular glioblastoma, and showed the miRNA involvement and their importance in astrocytoma development. This paper proposes a novel and simple definition of general colored Petri nets. This definition is coherent with that of (uncolored) Petri nets, preserves the reflexivity of the original net and is extended to represent inhibitors. Also suggested are systematic and formal merging rules to obtain a well-formed structure of the extended colored Petri net by folding a given uncolored net. Finally, we present a technique to compute colored invariants by selecting colored RP-subnets. On the average, the proposed technique performs better than the existing ones. The analysis procedure is explained through an illustrative example of a three-level interrupt-priority-handler scheme.

Antibodies specific to avian myeloblastosis virus envelope glycoprotein gp80 were raised. Immunoliposomes were prepared using anti-avian myeloblastosis virus envelope glycoprotein gp80 antibody. The antibody was palmitoylated to facilitate its incorporation into lipid bilayers of liposomes. The fluorescence emission spectra of palmitoylated IgG have exhibited a shift in emission maximum from 330 to 370 nm when it was incorporated into the liposomes. At least 50% of the incorporated antibody molecules were found to be oriented towards the outside in the liposomes. The average size of the liposome was found to be 300 A, and on an average, 15 antibody molecules were shown to be present in a liposome. When adriamycin encapsulated in immunoliposomes was incubated in a medium containing serum for 72 h, about 75% of the drug was retained in liposomes. In vivo localization studies, revealed an enhanced delivery of drug encapsulated in immunoliposomes to the target tissue, as compared to free drug or drug encapsulated in free liposomes. These data suggest a possible use of the drugs encapsulated in immunoliposomes to deliver the drugs in target areas, thereby reducing side effects caused by antiviral agents.

The structure of cadaverine dihydrochloride monohydrate has been determined by X-ray crystallography with the following features: NH3+(CH2)5NH3+.2Cl-.H2O, formula weight 191.1, monoclinic, P2, a = 11.814(2) angstrom, b = 4.517(2) angstrom, c = 20.370(3) angstrom, beta = 106.56-degrees(1): V = 1041.9(2) angstrom3, lambda = 1.541 angstrom; mu = 53.4 1; T = 296-degrees; Z = 4, D(x) = 1.218 g.cm-3, R = 0.101 for 1383 observed reflections. The crystal is highly pseudosymmetric with 2 molecules of cadaverine, 4 chloride ions and 2 partially disordered water molecules present in the asymmetric unit. Though both the cadaverine molecules in the asymmetric unit have an all trans conformation, the carbon backbones are slightly bent. Between the concave surfaces of two bent cadaverine molecules exists water channels all along the short b axis. The water molecules present in the channels are partially disordered

Nanocrystalline Fe53Co47 alloy was synthesized by a single-step transmetallation chemical method at room temperature. The Fe53Co47 alloy nanoparticles of 77 and 47 wt% were dispersed in silica matrix by the sol-gel process using tetraethyl orthosilcate. Structural studies reveal that the as-prepared alloy powders are in bcc phase and silica is in an amorphous state. The phase-transition temperature and Mossbauer spectra analysis of the Fe-Co alloy establishes the homogeneous alloy formation. A saturation magnetization of 218 emu/g was obtained for pure FeCo alloy at room temperature. Scanning electron microscopic analysis demonstrates the hollow-sphere morphology for FeCo alloy particles. Magnetic nanocomposite consisting of 47 wt% FeCo-silica shows enhanced thermal stability over the native FeCo alloy. Electrical and dielectric properties of 47 wt% FeCo-silica nanocomposites were investigated as a function of frequency and temperature. It was found that the dielectric constants and dielectric loss were stable throughout the measured temperature (310-373 K). Our results indicate that FeCo-silica nanocomposite is a promising candidate for high-frequency applications. (C) 2010 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim
