A rank-augmnented LU-algorithm is suggested for computing a generalized inverse of a matrix. Initially suitable diagonal corrections are introduced in (the symmetrized form of) the given matrix to facilitate decomposition; a backward-correction scheme then yields a desired generalized inverse.

Zinc film containing hexagonal plate stack and tower-like micro structures were grown on Si substrates at high temperature by thermal evaporation. Thermal oxidation studies on these micro structures have shown that ZnO nanoneedles selectively grow from the facets of the zinc microstructure at temperature above 300 degrees C in atmosphere TEM analysis showed that single crystalline and bicrystalline nanoneedles were formed in this oxidation process and the growth direction of these nanoneedles was identified along the [1 1 (2) overbar 0]. Based on the structural studies and morphological observation, we have proposed a possible mechanism for the selective growth of ZnO nanoneedles during thermal oxidation.

MIPS (metal interactions in protein structures) is a database of metals in the three-dimensional acromolecular structures available in the Protein Data Bank. Bound metal ions in proteins have both catalytic and structural functions. The proposed database serves as an open resource for the analysis and visualization of all metals and their interactions with macromolecular (protein and nucleic acid) structures. MIPS can be searched via a user-friendly interface, and the interactions between metals and protein molecules, and the geometric parameters, can be viewed in both textual and graphical format using the freely available graphics plug-in Jmol. MIPS is updated regularly, by means of programmed scripts to find metal-containing proteins from newly released protein structures. The database is useful for studying the properties of coordination between metals and protein molecules. It also helps to improve understanding of the relationship between macromolecular structure and function. This database is intended to serve the scientific community working in the areas of chemical and structural biology, and is freely available to all users, around the clock, at http://dicsoft2.physics.iisc.ernet.in/mips/.

Mobile genetic elements constitute a remarkably diverse group of nonessential selfish genes that provide no apparent function to the host. These selfish genes have been implicated in host extinction, speciation and architecture of genetic systems. Homing endonucleases, encoded by the open reading frames embedded in introns or inteins of mobile genetic elements, possess double-stranded DNA-specific endonuclease activity. They inflict sequence-specific double-strand breaks at or near the homing site in intron- or intein-less allele. Subsequently, through nonreciprocal exchange the insertion sequence (intron or intein) is transferred from an intein- or intron-containing allele to an intein- or intron-less allele. The components of host double-strand break repair pathway are thought to finish the "homing" process. Several lines of evidence suggest that homing endonucleases are capable of promoting transposition into ectopic sites within or across genomes for their survival as well as dispersal in natural populations. The occurrence of inteins at high frequencies serves as instructive models for understanding the mechanistic aspects of the process of homing and its evolution. This review focuses on genetic, biochemical, structural, and phylogenetic aspects of homing endonucleases, and their comparison with restriction endonucleases.

Peptides Possessing antibiotic activity isolated from microbial sources have been the subject of intensive structural and biological investigation over the past two decades. Perhaps, the discovery and widespread use of penicillin, a molecule biosynthetically derived from a tripeptide precursor, as a strong antibacterial agent, has provided the necessary impetus for the detailed study of microbial peptides. While many of these peptides have not been used clinically, They show unique metal binding properties and often possess the ability to modify the electrical properties or ion permeabilities of artificial lipid membranes. Hence, these peptides have been used extensively to study transmembrane ion transport processes in model and natural systems like mitochondria, chloroplasts and plasma membranes.

The Mueller-Stokes formalism that governs conventional polarization optics is formulated for plane waves, and thus the only qualification one could require of a 4 x 4 real matrix M in order that it qualify to be the Mueller matrix of some physical system would be that M map Omega((pol)), the positive solid light cone of Stokes vectors, into itself. In view of growing current interest in the characterization of partially coherent partially polarized electromagnetic beams, there is a need to extend this formalism to such beams wherein the polarization and spatial dependence are generically inseparably intertwined. This inseparability brings in additional constraints that a pre-Mueller matrix M mapping Omega((pol)) into itself needs to meet in order to be an acceptable physical Mueller matrix. These additional constraints are motivated and fully characterized. (C) 2010 Optical Society of America

The present, paper deals with the CAE-based study Of impact of jacketed projectiles on single- and multi-layered metal armour plates using LS-DYNA. The validation of finite element modelling procedure is mainly based on the mesh convergence study using both shell and solid elements for representing single-layered mild steel target plates. It, is shown that the proper choice of mesh density and the strain rate-dependent material properties are essential for all accurate prediction of projectile residual velocity. The modelling requirements are initially arrived at by correlating against test residual velocities for single-layered mild steel plates of different depths at impact velocities in the ran.-c of approximately 800-870 m/s. The efficacy of correlation is adjudged, in terms of a 'correlation index', defined in the paper: for which values close to unity are desirable. The experience gained for single-layered plates is next; used in simulating projectile impacts on multi-layered mild steel target plates and once again a high degree of correlation with experimental residual velocities is observed. The study is repeated for single- and multi-layered aluminium target plates with a similar level of success in test residual velocity prediction. TO the authors' best knowledge, the present comprehensive study shows in particular for the first time that, with a. proper modelling approach, LS-DYNA can be used with a great degree of confidence in designing perforation-resistant single and multi-layered metallic armour plates.

The article peruses the frictional response of an important metal working lubricant additive, sodium oleate. Frictional force microscopy is used to track the response of molecules self-assembled on a steel substrate of 3–4 nm roughness at 0% relative humidity. The friction-normal load characteristic emerges as bell-shaped, where the peak friction and normal load at peak friction are both sensitive to substrate roughness. The frictional response at loads lower than that associated with the peak friction is path reversible while at higher loads the loading and unloading paths are different. We suggest that a new low-friction interface material is created when the normal loads are high.

The carbohydrate residues of glycosphingolipids were implicated in many biologic processes such as cell-to-cell interactions; and as receptors for some viruses, bacterial and plant toxins, hormones, and so forth, and invariably for all the lectins (1). However, their receptor functions remained poorly defined for a long time as they form micelles even at very low concentrations in aqueous medium. In micelles, the oligosaccharide chains are not expected to have a well defined orientation suitable for recognition by macromolecular ligands. This problem was overcome by incorporating them in model membranes, namely, the liposomes. The demonstration of lectin-glycolipid interaction using liposomal model membranes was a crucial development that established glycolipids as biological receptors. Moreover, glycolipid-bearing liposomes provide a convenient system for investigating the role of glycolipid density, orientation, and exposure of their oligosaccharide chains at the membrane interface relevant to their receptor function (2–4).

A correlation for entropy and enthalpy based on the two-parameter law of corresponding states and the reference substance concept has been obtained. For 199 points tested, the over-all average absolute deviation and the maximum deviations in the calculated values of entropy with the available data are 0.74 and 7.20%. The corresponding deviations of enthalpy are 1.86 and 15.0%, respectively. A compressibility chart for chloromethanes has been made and shown to be superior to existing charts. For 102 points tested, the average absolute and maximum deviations in the compressibilities were 1.80 and 19.5%, respectively.

Determination of the protein content and lysine levels of a number of nonhybrid varieties of grain sorghum indicates large variations in the protein content. Statistical analysis of data on amounts of lysine shows that a negative correlation exists between per cent lysine in the protein and per cent protein in the seed. The proportion of various protein fractions in endosperm of five varieties of grain sorghum of both low- and high-protein type has been determined. Results show that prolamine and glutelin are the principal protein fractions, and increased protein levels in sorghum varieties are correlated with an increase mainly in the prolamine fraction. Nine high- and low-protein varieties of grain sorghum have been analyzed for their amino acid composition by ion exchange procedures. One of the high-protein genetic varieties of sorghum has a high concentration of lysine in the seed. Amino acid composition of the protein fractions of two varieties is also reported. These data permit an evaluation of the nutritional quality of sorghum protein and factors that influence the quality of the protein.

The enzymes involved in the biosynthesis of isoleucine and valine have been shown to be present in cell-free extracts of Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv. In addition to the known enzymes of the pathway, cell-free extracts of this organism contain a new enzyme. When cell-free extracts were incubated with acetolactate and Image -ascorbic acid, without reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate, the isomer of acetolactate, viz., α-keto-β-hydroxyisovalerate, was found to accumulate and was identified by different methods. The reaction is enzymic, and Image -ascorbic acid cannot be replaced by other reducing agents such as hydroquinone, 2,6-dichlorophenol indophenol, or glutathione; by derivatives of Image -ascorbic acid such as dehydroascorbic acid or dimethyl ascorbic acid; or by cobamide coenzyme. Since the extracts also isomerize α-acetohydroxybutyrate to α-keto-β-hydroxy-β-methylvalerate, the enzyme catalyzing the reaction has been termed “acetohydroxy acid isomerase.” This is the first time that the presence of acetohydroxy acid isomerase has been reported in any biological system and that a specific metabolic role has been assigned for Image -ascorbic acid. The extract also possesses reductase activity to convert α-keto-β-hydroxyisovalerate to α,β-dihydroxyisovalerate in the presence of reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate.
