3-(2,3-Dimethoxyphenyl)-1-(pyridin-2-yl)prop-2-en-1-one (DMPP) a potential second harmonic generating (SHG) has been synthesized and grown as a single crystal by the slow evaporation technique at ambient temperature. The structure determination of the grown crystal was done by single crystal X-ray diffraction study. DMPP crystallizes with orthorhombic system with cell parameters a = 20.3106(8)angstrom, b = 4.9574(2)angstrom, c = 13.4863(5)angstrom, alpha = 90 degrees, beta = 90 degrees, gamma = 90 degrees and space group Pca2(1). The crystals were characterized by FT-IR, thermal analysis, UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy and SHG measurements. Various functional groups present in DMPP were ascertained by FTIR analysis. DMPP is thermally stable up to 80 degrees C and optically transparent in the visible region. The crystal exhibits SHG efficiency comparable to that of KDP. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The effect of natural convection on the oscillatory flow in an open-ended pipe driven by a timewise sinusoidally varying pressure at one end and subjected to an ambient-to-cryogenic temperature difference across the ends, is numerically studied. Conjugate effects arising out of the interaction of oscillatory flow with heat conduction in the pipe wall are taken into account by considering a finite thickness wall with an insulated exterior surface. Two cases, namely, one with natural convection acting downwards and the other, with natural convection acting upwards, are considered. The full set of compressible flow equations with axissymmetry are solved using a pressure correction algorithm. Parametric studies are conducted with frequencies in the range 5-15 Hz for an end-to-end temperature difference of 200 and 50 K. Results are obtained for the variation of velocity, temperature. Nusselt number and the phase relationship between mass flow rate and temperature. It is found that the Rayleigh number has a minimal effect on the time averaged Nusselt number and phase angle. However, it does influence the local variation of velocity and Nusselt number over one cycle. The natural convection and pressure amplitude have influence on the energy flow through the gas and solid. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A modeling framework is presented in this paper, integrating hydrologic scenarios projected from a General Circulation Model (GCM) with a water quality simulation model to quantify the future expected risk. Statistical downscaling with a Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA) is carried out to develop the future scenarios of hydro-climate variables starting with simulations provided by a GCM. A Multiple Logistic Regression (MLR) is used to quantify the risk of Low Water Quality (LWQ) corresponding to a threshold quality level, by considering the streamflow and water temperature as explanatory variables. An Imprecise Fuzzy Waste Load Allocation Model (IFWLAM) presented in an earlier study is then used to develop adaptive policies to address the projected water quality risks. Application of the proposed methodology is demonstrated with the case study of Tunga-Bhadra river in India. The results showed that the projected changes in the hydro-climate variables tend to diminish DO levels, thus increasing the future risk levels of LWQ. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A sufficiently long lived warm dark matter could be a source of X-rays observed by satellite based X-ray telescopes. We consider axinos and gravitinos with masses between 1 keV and 100 keV in supersymmetric models with sin all R-parity violation. We show that axino dark matter receives significant constraints from X-ray observations of Chandra and SPI, especially for the lower end of the allowed range of the axino decay constant f(a), while the gravitino dark matter remains unconstrained.

Droplet collision occurs frequently in regions where the droplet number density is high. Even for Lean Premixed and Pre-vaporized (LPP) liquid sprays, the collision effects can be very high on the droplet size distributions, which will in turn affect the droplet vaporization process. Hence, in conjunction with vaporization modeling, collision modeling for such spray systems is also essential. The standard O'Rourke's collision model, usually implemented in CFD codes, tends to generate unphysical numerical artifact when simulations are performed on Cartesian grid and the results are not grid independent. Thus, a new collision modeling approach based on no-time-counter method (NTC) proposed by Schmidt and Rutland is implemented to replace O'Rourke's collision algorithm to solve a spray injection problem in a cylindrical coflow premixer. The so called ``four-leaf clover'' numerical artifacts are eliminated by the new collision algorithm and results from a diesel spray show very good grid independence. Next, the dispersion and vaporization processes for liquid fuel sprays are simulated in a coflow premixer. Two liquid fuels under investigation are jet-A and Rapeseed Methyl Esters (RME). Results show very good grid independence in terms of SMD distribution, droplet number distribution and fuel vapor mass flow rate. A baseline test is first established with a spray cone angle of 90 degrees and injection velocity of 3 m/s and jet-A achieves much better vaporization performance than RME due to its higher vapor pressure. To improve the vaporization performance for both fuels, a series of simulations have been done at several different combinations of spray cone angle and injection velocity. At relatively low spray cone angle and injection velocity, the collision effect on the average droplet size and the vaporization performance are very high due to relatively high coalescence rate induced by droplet collisions. Thus, at higher spray cone angle and injection velocity, the results expectedly show improvement in fuel vaporization performance since smaller droplet has a higher vaporization rate. The vaporization performance and the level of homogeneity of fuel-air mixture can be significantly improved when the dispersion level is high, which can be achieved by increasing the spray cone angle and injection velocity. The synthesis, molecular structure, DNA binding and nuclease activity of Cu4O4 open-cubane tetranuclear copper(II) complex with 3-2-(ethyl amino)ethyl]imino]-2-butanoneoxime (HL) are reported for the first time. The neutral tetranuclear Cu4L4(ClO4)(4)] complex crystallizes in tetragonal space group P (4) over bar2(1)c with the unit cell parameters; a = 13.798(4) angstrom, b = 13.798(4) angstrom, c = 14.119(6) angstrom, V = 2688(16) angstrom(3), Z = 8, R = 0.0636. Symmetrically equivalent copper atoms exhibit a CuN3O3 elongated distorted octahedral coordination environment, with three nitrogen atoms of the L ligand and one oxime-oxygen atom of second L ligand at equatorial positions, one oxime-oxygen atom of the third L ligand and perchlorate oxygen at axial positions. The complex shows quasireversible cyclic voltammetric response at 0.805 V (Delta E-p = 277 mV) at 100 mV s (1) in DMF for the Cu(II)/Cu(I) redox couple. The binding study of the complex with calf-thymus DNA has been investigated using absorption spectrophotometry. The complex shows strong nuclease activity on stranded pBR 322 plasmid DNA in the presence of hydrogen peroxide and marginal nuclease activity in the presence of reducing agent (dithiothreitol). Polycrystalline powders of Ba1-xCaxBi4Ti4O15 (where x = 0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 and 1) were prepared via the conventional solid-state reaction route. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman scattering techniques have been employed to probe into the structural changes on changing x. XRD analyses confirmed the formation of monophasic bismuth layered structure of all the above compositions with an increase in orthorhombic distortion with increase in x. Raman spectra revealed a redshift in A(1g) peak and an increase in the B-2g/B-3g splitting with increasing Ca content. The average grain size was found to increase with increasing x. The temperature of the maximum dielectric constant (T-m) increased linearly with increasing Ca-content whereas the diffuseness of the phase transition was found to decrease with the end member CaBi4Ti4O15 showing a frequency independent sharp phase transition around 1048 K. Ca doping resulted in a decrease in the remnant polarization and an increase in the coercive field. Ba0.75Ca0.25Bi4Ti4O15 ceramics showed an enhanced piezoelectric coefficient d(33) of 15 pC N-1 at room temperature. Low values of dielectric losses and tunability of temperature coefficient of dielectric constant (tau(epsilon)) in the present solid-solution suggest that these compounds can be of potential use in microwave dielectrics at high temperatures. We study the phenomenon of electromagnetically induced transparency and absorption (EITA) using a control laser with a Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) profile instead of the usual Gaussian profile, and observe significant narrowing of the resonance widths. Aligning the probe beam to the central hole in the doughnut-shaped LG control beam allows simultaneously a strong control intensity required for high signal-to-noise ratio and a low intensity in the probe region required to get narrow resonances. Experiments with an expanded Gaussian control and a second-order LG control show that transit time and orbital angular momentum do not play a significant role. This explanation is borne out by a density-matrix analysis with a radially varying control Rabi frequency. We observe these resonances using degenerate two-level transitions in the D-2 line of Rb-87 in a room temperature vapor cell, and an EIA resonance with width up to 20 times below the natural linewidth for the F = 2 -> F' = 3 transition. Thus the use of LG beams should prove advantageous in all applications of EITA and other kinds of pump-probe spectroscopy as well.

Crystals of a new nonlinear optical (NLO) material, viz., L-histidinium 2-nitrobenzoate (LHNB) (1) were grown by slow evaporation of an aqueous solution containing equimolar concentrations of L-histidine and 2-nitrobenzoic acid. The structure of the title compound which crystallizes in the non-centrosymmetric monoclinic space group P2(1) was elucidated using single crystal X-ray intensity data. The UV-Vis-NIR spectrum of 1 reveals its transparent nature while the vibrational spectra confirm the presence of the functional groups in 1. The thermal stability and second harmonic generation (SHG) conversion efficiency of 1 were also investigated. (C) 2012 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.

While the recent discovery of a Higgs-like boson at the LHC is an extremely important and encouraging step towards the discovery of the complete Standard Model (SM), the current information on this state does not rule out possibility of beyond standard model (BSM) physics. In fact the current data can still accommodate reasonably large values of the branching fractions of the Higgs into a channel with `invisible' decay products, such a channel being also well motivated theoretically. In this study we revisit the possibility of detecting the Higgs in this invisible channel for both choices of the LHC energies, 8 and 14 TeV, for two production modes; vector boson fusion (VBF) and associated production (ZH). We perform a comprehensive collider analysis for all the above channels and project the reach of LHC to constrain the invisible decay branching fraction for both 8 and 14 TeV energies. For the ZH case we consider decays of the Z boson into a pair of leptons as well as a b (b) over bar pair. For the VBF channel the sensitivity is found to be more than 5 sigma for both the energies up to an invisible branching ratio (Br-inv) similar to 0.80, with luminosities similar to 20/30 fb(-1). The sensitivity is further extended to values of Br-inv similar to 0.25 for 300 fb(-1) at 14 TeV. However the reach is found to be more modest for the ZH mode with leptonic final state; with about 3.5 sigma for the planned luminosity at 8 TeV, reaching 8 sigma only for 14 TeV for 50 fb(-1). In spite of the much larger branching ratio (BR) of the Z into a b (b) over bar channel compared to the dilepton case, the former channel, can provide useful reach up to Br-inv greater than or similar to 0.75, only for the higher luminosity (300 fb(-1)) option using both jet-substructure and jet clustering methods. Mn0.4Zn0.6Fe2O4 powders were prepared by microwave hydrothermal method. The powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscope. The powders were sintered at different temperatures 400, 500, 600, 700, 800 and 900 degrees C/30 min using microwave sintering method. The grain size was estimated by scanning electron microscope. The room temperature dielectric and magnetic properties were studied in the frequency range (100 kHz-1.8 GHz). The magnetization properties were measured upto 1.5 T. The acoustic emission has been measured along the hysteresis loops from 80 K to Curie temperature. It is found that the magneto-acoustic emission (MAE) activity along hysteresis loop is proportional to the hysteresis losses during the same loop. This law has been verified on series of polycrystalline ferrites and found that the law is valid whatever the composition, the grain size and temperature. It is also found that the domain wall creation/or annihilation processes are the origin of the MAE. (C) 2013 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

We report the synthesis of Pr6O11 microspheres self-assembled from ultra-small nanocrystals formed by the microwave irradiation of a solution of a salt of Pr in ethylene glycol (EG). The as-prepared product consists of microspheres measuring 200 to 500 nm in diameter and made of <5 nm nano-crystallites. The surface of these microspheres/nanocrystals is covered/capped with an organic layer of ethylene glycol as shown by TEM analysis and confirmed by IR spectroscopy measurements. The as-prepared product shows blue-green emission under excitation, which changes to orange-red when the product is annealed in air at 600 degrees C for 2 h. This change in luminescence behaviour can be attributed to presence of ethylene glycol layer in the as-prepared product. The samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), IR Spectroscopy (IR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Object. Insulin-like growth factor binding proteins (IGEBPs) have been implicated in the pathogenesis of glioma. In a previous study the authors demonstrated that IGFBP-3 is a novel glioblastoma biomarker associated with poor survival. Since signal transducer and activator of transcription 1 (STAT-1) has been shown to be regulated by IGFBP-3 during chondrogenesis and is a prosurvival and radioresistant molecule in different tumors, the aim in the present study was to explore the functional significance of IGFBP-3 in malignant glioma cells, to determine if STAT-1 is indeed regulated by IGFBP-3, and to study the potential of STAT-1 as a biomarker in glioblastoma. Methods. The functional significance of IGFBP-3 was investigated using the short hairpin (sh)RNA gene knockdown approach on U251MG cells. STAT-1 regulation by IGFBP-3 was tested on U251MG and U87MG cells by shRNA gene knockdown and exogenous treatment with recombinant IGFBP-3 protein. Subsequently, the expression of STAT-1 was analyzed with real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and immunohistochemistry (IHC) in glioblastoma and control brain tissues. Survival analyses were done on a uniformly treated prospective cohort of adults with newly diagnosed glioblastoma (136 patients) using Kaplan-Meier and Cox regression models. Results. IGFBP-3 knockdown significantly impaired proliferation, motility, migration, and invasive capacity of U251MG cells in vitro (p < 0.005). Exogenous overexpression of IGFBP-3 in U251MG and U87MG cells demonstrated STAT-1 regulation. The mean transcript levels (by real-time RT-PCR) and the mean labeling index of STAT-1 (by IHC) were significantly higher in glioblastoma than in control brain tissues (p = 0.0239 and p < 0.001, respectively). Multivariate survival analysis revealed that STAT-1 protein expression (HR 1.015, p = 0.033, 95% CI 1.001-1.029) along with patient age (HR 1.025, p = 0.005, 95% CI 1.008-1.042) were significant predictors of shorter survival in patients with glioblastoma. Conclusions. IGFBP-3 influences tumor cell proliferation, migration, and invasion and regulates STAT-1 expression in malignant glioma cells. STAT-1 is overexpressed in human glioblastoma tissues and emerges as a novel prognostic biomarker.

First-principles density functional theory has been used to evaluate the shear and cleavage strength in terms of Griffith work and generalized stacking fault energy (GSF) of (001) plane for gamma, gamma' and gamma-gamma' system as a function of distance from the gamma/gamma' interface. Calculation of Griffith work suggests higher cleavage energy for bulk gamma as compared to gamma' while the GSF calculation suggests higher shear strength for bulk gamma' as compared to gamma. It has been found that the shear strength of the cubic plane of the gamma/gamma' interface is marginally lower than those of bulk gamma and gamma' phases. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
