Fluidized bed reactor technology was investigated as a means of developing a new simple and low cost process for coal desulfurization. Preliminary experimental results obtained in a 2.54 cm batch fluidized bed reactor have shown that over 80% total sulfur reductions can be achieved by sequential chlorination and dechlorination/ hydrodesulfurization of high sulfur pulverized coals. Proximate and ultimate analyses of desulfurized coals have revealed enhanced carbon and fixed carbon levels and substantially reduced volatile, oxygen and hydrogen contents. While there was a minor increase in the ash content and heating value, nitrogen and chlorine contents were essentially unchanged. Compared to an earlier slurry phase process, the fluidized bed reactors process has specific advantages such as shorter reaction times, fewer processing steps and reduced reactant requirements. A fluidized bed reactor process may thus have a potential of being developed into a simple and economic means of converting high sulfur coals to environmentally acceptable fuels.

In an attempt to unravel the role of conserved histidine residues in the structure-function of sheep liver cytosolic serine hydroxymethyltransferase (SHMT), three site-specific mutants (H134N, H147N, and H150N) were constructed and expressed, H134N and H147N SHMTs had K-m values for L-serine, L-allo-threonine and beta-phenylserine similar to that of wild type enzyme, although the k(cat) values were markedly decreased, H134N SHMT was obtained in a dimeric form with only 6% of bound pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP) compared with the wild type enzyme, Increasing concentrations of PLP (up to 500 mu M) enhanced the enzyme activity without changing its oligomeric structure, indicating that His-134 may be involved in dimer-dimer interactions, H147N SHMT was obtained in a tetrameric form but with very little PLP (3%) bound to it, suggesting that this residue was probably involved in cofactor binding, Unlike the wild type enzyme, the cofactor could be easily removed by dialysis from H147N SHMT, and the apoenzyme thus formed was present predominantly in the dimeric form, indicating that PLP binding is at the dimer-dimer interface, H150N SHMT was obtained in a tetrameric form with bound PLP, However, the mutant had very little enzyme activity (<2%). The k(cat)/K-m values for L-serine, L-allo-threonine and beta-phenylserine were 80-, 56-, and SS-fold less compared with wild type enzyme, Unlike the wild type enzyme, it failed to form the characteristic quinonoid intermediate and was unable to carry out the exchange of 2-S proton from glycine in the presence of H-4-folate. However, it could form an external aldimine with serine and glycine, The wild type and the mutant enzyme had similar K-d values for serine and glycine, These results suggest that His-150 may be the base that abstracts the alpha-proton of the substrate, leading to formation of the quinonoid intermediate in the reaction catalyzed by SHMT.

The coat protein gene of physalis mottle tymovirus (PhMV) was over expressed in Escherichia coli using pET-3d vector. The recombinant protein was found to self assemble into capsids in vivo. The purified recombinant capsids had an apparent s value of 56.5 S and a diameter of 29(±2) nm. In order to establish the role of amino and carboxy-terminal regions in capsid assembly, two amino-terminal deletions clones lacking the first 11 and 26 amino acid residues and two carboxy-terminal deletions lacking the last five and ten amino acid residues were constructed and overexpressed. The proteins lacking N-terminal 11 (PhCPN1) and 26 (PhCPN2) amino acid residues self assembled into T = 3 capsids in vivo, as evident from electron microscopy, ultracentrifugation and agarose gel electrophoresis. The recombinant, PhCPN1 and PhCPN2 capsids were as stable as the empty capsids formed in vivo and encapsidated a small amount of mRNA. The monoclonal antibody PA3B2, which recognizes the epitope within region 22 to 36, failed to react with PhCPN2 capsids while it recognized the recombinant and PhCPN1 capsids. Disassembly of the capsids upon treatment with urea showed that PhCPN2 capsids were most stable. These results demonstrate that the N-terminal 26 amino acid residues are not essential for T = 3 capsid assembly in PhMV. In contrast, both the proteins lacking the C-terminal five and ten amino acid residues were present only in the insoluble fraction and could not assemble into capsids, suggesting that these residues are crucial for folding and assembly of the particles.

Molybdenum oxide films (MoO3) were deposited on glass and crystalline silicon substrates by sputtering of molybdenum target under various oxygen partial pressures in the range 8 × 10−5–8 × 10−4 mbar and at a fixed substrate temperature of 473 K employing dc magnetron sputtering technique. The influence of oxygen partial pressure on the composition stoichiometry, chemical binding configuration, crystallographic structure and electrical and optical properties was systematically studied. X-ray photoelectron spectra of the films formed at 8 × 10−5 mbar showed the presence of Mo6+ and Mo5+ oxidation states of MoO3 and MoO3−x. The films deposited at oxygen partial pressure of 2 × 10−4 mbar showed Mo6+ oxidation state indicating the films were nearly stoichiometric. It was also confirmed by the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic studies. X-ray diffraction studies revealed that the films formed at oxygen partial pressure of 2 × 10−4 mbar showed the presence of (0 k 0) reflections indicated the layered structure of α-phase MoO3. The electrical conductivity of the films decreased from 3.6 × 10−5 to 1.6 × 10−6 Ω−1 cm−1, the optical band gap of the films increased from 2.93 to 3.26 eV and the refractive index increased from 2.02 to 2.13 with the increase of oxygen partial pressure from 8 × 10−5 to 8 × 10−4 mbar, respectively.

Protocatechuate-3,4-dioxygenase from the leaves of Tecoma stans was purified to near homogeneity and some of its properties studied. It was optimally active at pH 5.2 and at 40°C. Its molecular weight of approx. 150 000 was determined by gel filtration on a Sephadex G-150 column. The Km value for protocatechuate was found to be 330 μM and for ferrous sulfate, 40 μM. The enzyme was highly specific for protocatechuate and did not attack any of the substrate analogues. None of the substrate analogues tested inhibited the enzyme activity. Sulfhydryl reagents inhibited the enzyme activity which could be partially reversed by sulfhydryl compounds. The dioxygenase activity was not associated with polyphenol oxidase activity.

In1-xMnxSb films have been grown with different Mn doping concentrations (x = 0.0085, 0.018, 0.029 and 0.04) beyond the equilibrium 14 solubility limit by liquid phase epitaxy. We have studied temperature dependent resistivity, the Hall effect, magnetoresistance and magnetization for all compositions. Saturation in magnetization observed even at room temperature suggests the existence of ferromagnetic clusters in the film which has been verified by scanning electron microscopy studies. The anomalous Hall coefficient is found to be negative. Remnant field present on the surface of the clusters seems to affect the anomalous Hall effect at very low fields (below 350 Gauss). In the zero field resistivity, a variable-range hopping conduction mechanism dominates below 3.5 K for all samples above which activated behavior is predominant. The temperature dependence of the magnetization measurement shows a magnetic ordering below 10 K which is consistent with electrical measurements. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A modified form of Green's integral theorem is employed to derive the energy identity in any water wave diffraction problem in a single-layer fluid for free-surface boundary condition with higher-order derivatives. For a two-layer fluid with free-surface boundary condition involving higher-order derivatives, two forms of energy identities involving transmission and reflection coefficients for any wave diffraction problem are also derived here by the same method. Based on this modified Green's theorem, hydrodynamic relations such as the energy-conservation principle and modified Haskind–Hanaoka relation are derived for radiation and diffraction problems in a single as well as two-layer fluid.

Films of CuInSe2 were deposited onto glass substrates by a hot wall deposition method using bulk CuInSe2 as a source material. All the deposited CuInSe2 films were found to be polycrystalline in nature exhibiting the chalcopyrite structure with the crystallite orientation along (101),(112),(103),(211),(220),(312) and (400) directions. The photocurrent was found to increase with increase in film thickness and also with increase of light intensity. Photocurrent spectra show a peak related to the band-to-band transition. The spectral response of CuInSe2 thin films was studied by allowing the radiation to pass through a series of interference filters in the wavelength range 700-1200 rim. Films of higher thickness exhibited higher photosensitivity while low thickness films exhibited moderate photosensitivity. CuInSe2-based Solar cells with different types of buffer layers such as US, Cdse, CuInSe2 and CdSe0.7Te0.3 were fabricated. The current and voltage were measured using an optical power meter and an electrometer respectively. The fabricated solar cells were illuminated using 100 mW/cm(2) white light under AM1 conditions. Bacteria isolated from the rhizosphere of mulberry (Morus indica) as well as from control soil were tested for their effects on the growth of mulberry seedlings and for phytohormone production. About 12.8 per cent of the rhizosphere and 9.7 per cent of the soil isolates produced phytohormones in cultures. Rhizosphere isolates were more active in hormone synthesis than their soil counterparts. Soaking mulberry stem cuttings in culture filtrates of phytohormone synthesisers hastened their rooting. Culture filtrates of many isolates — hormone producers or not — stimulated or inhibited the growth of shoot and/or root of plants. Many cultures could also inhibit the germination of mulberry seeds.

Some new concepts characterizing the response of nonlinear systems are developed. These new concepts are denoted by the terms, the transient system equivalent, the response vector, and the space-phase components. This third concept is analyzed in comparison with the well-known technique of symmetrical components. The performance of a multiplicative feedback control system is represented by a nonlinear integro-differential equation; its solution is obtained by the principle of variation of parameters. The system response is treated as a vector and is resolved into its space-phase components. The individual effects of these components on the performance of the system are discussed. The suitability of the technique for the transient analysis of higher order nonlinear control systems is discussed.

Grover's database search algorithm, although discovered in the context of quantum computation, can be implemented using any physical system that allows superposition of states. A physical realization of this algorithm is described using coupled simple harmonic oscillators, which can be exactly solved in both classical and quantum domains. Classical wave algorithms are far more stable against decoherence compared to their quantum counterparts. In addition to providing convenient demonstration models, they may have a role in practical situations, such as catalysis.

A series of 6,11-dihydro-11-oxodibenz[b,e]oxepin-2-acetic acids (DOAA) which are known to be anti-inflammatory agents were studied. The geometries of some of the molecules obtained from X-ray crystallography were used in the calculations as such while the geometries of their derivatives were obtained by local, partial geometry optimization around the Sites of substitution employing the AMI method, keeping the remaining parts of the geometries the same as those in the parent molecules. Molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) mapping was performed for the molecules using optimized hybridization displacement charges (HDC) combined with Lowdin charges, as this charge distribution has been shown earlier to yield near ab initio quality results. A good correlation has been found between the MEP values near the oxygen atoms of the hydroxyl groups of the carboxy groups of the molecules and their anti-inflammatory activities. The result is broadly in agreement with the model proposed earlier by other authors regarding the structure-activity relationship for other similar molecules.

Antiferroelectricity of sol-gel grown pure and La modified PbZrO3 thin films, with a maximum extent of 6 mol%, has been characterized by temperature dependent P-E hysteresis loops within the applied electric field of 60 MV/m. It has been seen that on extent of La modification electric field induced phase transformation can be altered and at 40 degrees C its maximum value has been observed at +/- 38 MV/m on 6 mol% modifications whereas the minimum value is +/- 22 MV/m on 1 mol%. On La modification the variation of electric field induced phase transformations at 40 degrees C has been correlated with the temperature of ntiferroelectric phase condensation on cooling. The critical electric fields for saturated P-E hysteresis loops have been defined from field dependent maximum polarizations and their variations on La modification show a similar trend as found in their dielectric phase transition temperatures. The mechanism underlying homeostatic regulation of the plasma levels of free retinol-binding protein and free thyroxine, the systemic distribution of which is of great importance, has been investigated. A simple method has been developed to determine the rate of dissociation of a ligand from the binding protein. Analysis of the dissociation process of retinol-binding protein from prealbumin-2 reveals that the free retinol-binding protein pool undergoes massive flux, and the prealbumin-2 participates in homeostatic regulation of the free retinol-binding protein pool. Studies on the dissociation process of thyroxine from its plasma carrier proteins show that the various plasma carrier proteins share two roles. Of the two types of protein, the thyroxine-binding globulin (the high affinity binding protein) contributes only 27% of the free thyroxine in a rapid transition process, despite its being the major binding protein. But prealbumin-2, which has lower affinity towards thyroxine, participates mainly in a rapid flux of the free thyroxine pool. Thus thyroxine-binding globulin acts predominantly as a plasma reservoir of thyroxine, and also probably in the buffering action on plasma free thyroxine level, in the long term, while prealbumin-2 participates mainly in the maintainance of constancy of free thyroxine levels even in the short term. The existence of these two types of binding protein facilitates compensation for the metabolic flux of the free ligand and maintenance of the thyroxine pool within a very narrow range.
