The perovskites, Y0.75La0.25Ba2Cu3O7 and Y0.75Lu0.25Ba2Cu3O7, show high-Tc superconductivity (with zero resistance at or above 80 K), just as the parent compound YBa2Cu3O7. The Lu-substituted oxide, with the smallest unit-cell parameters, shows the highest Tc besides exhibiting a 100% Meissner effect. Hc1, in these oxides is around 25 mT, but the Hc2, is large. The thermopower of YBa2Cu3O7 shows a sharp transition to zero at the superconducting transition, reinforcing the bulk nature of the superconductivity. Preliminary studies show that ErBa2Cu3O7 and Er0.5Y0.5Ba2Cu3O7 are both high-temperature superconductors with zero resistance in the 82-90 K range.

Solid solutions of the formula La2−xLnxCuO4 (Ln = Pr, Nd) possess the orthorhombic structure of La2CuO4 for small values of x and transform to the tetragonal Nd2CuO4 structure at a critical value of x. At the critical composition, there is an abrupt change in specific volume as well as the Image ratio. The material exhibits temperature-independent electrical resistivity below the critical value x and semiconducting behaviour above it. The specific volume and Image ratio smoothly decrease with increase in x in the La2Cu1−xNixO4 system, although the solid solution possess the tetragonal K2NiF4 structure when x>0.1. Compositions with x>0.1 exhibit a gradual semiconductor metal transition similar to that of La2NiO4, the transition temperature decreasing with increasing

Lead zir conyl oxalate hexahydrate (LZO) and lead titanyl zirconyl oxalate hydrate (LTZO) are prepared and characterized. Their thermal decompositions have been investigated by thermoanalytical and gas analysis techniques. The decomposition in air or oxygen has three steps — dehydration, decomposition of the oxalate to a carbonate and the decomposition of carbonate to PbZrO3. In non oxidising atmosphere, partial reduction of Pb(II) to Pb(0) takes place at the oxalate decomposition step. The formation of free metallic lead affects the stoichiometry of the intermediate carbonate and yields a mixture of Pb(Ti,Zr)O3 and ZrO2 as the final products. By maintaining oxidising atmosphere and low heating rate, direct preparation of stoichiometric, crystalline Pb(Ti,Zr)O3 at 550°C is possible from the corresponding oxalate precursor.

First-principles calculations were performed for orthorhombic HgO, rhombohedral and cubic phases of HgTiO3 (HTO) and HgPbO3 (HPO). The calculations show that in the rhombohedral phase HTO is a direct gap insulator with a gap of ~1.6 eV. The rhombohedral phase of HPO, on the other hand, shows a weak metallic character. The results provide an explanation for the electrical properties of these compounds. The cubic phases of HTO and HPO are invariably metallic in nature, thereby suggesting that for HTO the rhombohedral–cubic transition must also be accompanied by a change in the electrical state. Examination of the electronic density of states of these systems revealed no significant on-site mixing of Hg 5d and Hg 6s states in any of these materials.

Although Pb(Zr1-XTiX)O-3 solid solution is the cornerstone of the piezoelectric ceramics, there is no information in the literature on thermodynamic activities of the component phases in the solid solution. Using inter-crystalline ion exchange equilibria between Pb(Zr1-XTiX)O-3 solid solution with cubic perovskite structure and (Zr1-YTiY)O-2 solid solutions with monoclinic and tetragonal structures, activities of PbTiO3 and PbZrO3 in the perovskite solid solution have been derived at 1373 K using the modified Gibbs-Duhem integration technique of Jacob and Jeffes. Tie-lines from the cubic solid solution are skewed towards the ZrO2 corner. Activities in the zirconia-rich (Zr1-YTiY)02 solid solutions are taken from a recent emf study. The results for the perovskite solid solution at 1373 K can be represented by a sub-regular solution model: Delta G(E.M) (J mol(-1)) = X-PbTiO3 X-PbZrO3(5280X(PbTiO3) - 1980X(PbZrO3)) where Delta G(E.M) is the excess Gibbs energy of mixing of the cubic solid solution and Xi represents the mole fraction of component i. There is a significant positive deviation from ideality for PbTiO3-rich compositions and mild negative deviation near the PbZrO3 corner. The cubic solid solution is intrinsically stable against composition fluctuations at temperatures down to 840 K. The results contrast sharply with the recent calorimetric data on enthalpy of mixing which signal instability of the cubic perovskite solid solution. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The infra-red spectra of Cu, Ca, Sr, Ba and Pb chloroacetates were studied in order to investigate the effect of co-ordination on the vibration spectra of the ligand. The shifts of the symmetric and antisymmetric COO− vibrational frequencies indicate a bridged structure as the most probable one for the complexes investigated. No linear relationship between the shifts of the COO− stretching frequencies and E/r (where E is the electron excitation energy and r the ionic radius) was observed. No systematic mass effect on these COO− frequencies also could be established.

The crystal structure of the complex La(NO3)3.4(CH3)2SO has been solved by the heavy-atom method. The complex crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/e with four formula units in a unit cell of dimensions a= 14.94, b= 11.04, c= 15.54 A and fl= 109 ° 10'. The parameters have been refined by threedimensional least-squares procedures with anisotropic thermal parameters for all atoms except hydrogen. The final R index for 1257 observed reflexions is 0.094. The La 3 + ion is coordinated by ten oxygen atoms with La-O distances varying from 2.47 to 2.71 A. The geometry of the coordination polyhedron is described.

The first two members of the new TlSrn+1−xLnxCunO2n+3+δ (Ln=La, Pr, or Nd) series of superconducting cuprates possessing 1021 and 1122 type structures are described. The n=1 (1021) members with Tcs around 40 K have electrons or holes as the majority charge carriers depending on x. The n=2 (1122) cuprate (Ln=Pr or Nd) shows a Tc in the 80–90 K range.

The thermal decomposition of lanthanum biscitrato chromium(III) dihydrate has been studied in static air and dynamic argon atmospheres. The complex decomposes in four steps: dehydration, decomposition of the citrate to an intermediate oxycarbonate, formation of LaCrO4(V) from oxycarbonate, and finally decomposition of LaCrO4(V) to LaCrO3. Formation of LaCrCrO4(V) requires the presence of oxygen The decomposition behaviour of a mechanical mixture of lanthanum citrate hydrate and chromium citrate hydrate was compared with that of the citrato complex. Both the starting material and the intermediates were characterized by X-ray diffraction, IR electronic and ESR spectroscopy, surface area and magnetic susceptibility measurements, as well as by chemical analysis. A scheme is proposed for the decomposition of lanthanum biscitrato chromium(III) dihydrate in air. LaCrO3 can be obtained at temperatures as low as 875 K by isothermal decomposition of the complex.

The dielectric response of pulsed laser ablated barium strontium titanate thin films were studied as a function of frequency and ambient temperature (from room temperature to 320 degrees C) by employing impedance spectroscopy. Combined modulus and impedance spectroscopic plots were used to study the response of the film, which in general may contain the grain, grain boundary, and the electrode/film interface as capacitive elements. The spectroscopic plots revealed that the major response was due to the grains, while contributions from the grain boundary or the electrode/film interface was negligible. Further observation from the complex impedance plot showed data points lying on a single semicircle, implying the response originated from a single capacitive element corresponding to the bulk grains. Conductivity plots against frequency at different temperatures suggested a response obeying the 'universal power law'. The value of the activation energies computed from the Arrhenius plots of both ac and dc conductivities with 1000/T were 0.97 and 1.04 eV, respectively. This was found to be in excellent agreement with published literature, and was attributed to the motion of oxygen vacancies within the bulk. (C) 2000 American Institute of Physics. A completely automated temperature-programmed reaction (TPR) system for carrying out gas-solid catalytic reactions under atmospheric flow conditions is fabricated to study CO and hydrocarbon oxidation, and NO reduction. The system consists of an all-stainless steel UHV system, quadrupole mass spectrometer SX200 (VG Scientific), a tubular furnace and micro-reactor, a temperature controller, a versatile gas handling system, and a data acquisition and analysis system. The performance of the system has been tested under standard experimental conditions for CO oxidation over well-characterized Ce1-x-y(La/Y)(y)O2-delta catalysts. Testing of 3-way catalysis with CO, NO and C2H2 to convert to CO2, N-2 and H2O is done with this catalyst which shows complete removal of pollutants below 325 degrees C. Fixed oxide-ion defects in Pt substituted Ce1-y(La/Y)(y)O2-y/2 show higher catalytic activity than Pt ion-substituted CeO2

Recent experimental investigations of phase equilibria and thermodynamic properties of the systems M-Pb-O, where M = Ca, Sr or Ba, indicate a regular increase in thermodynamic stability of ternary oxides, MPbO3 and M2PbO4, with increasing basicity of the oxide of the alkaline-earth metal. Number of stable interoxide compounds at 1100 K in the systems M-Pb-O (M = Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba) increases in unit increments from Mg to Ba. In this paper, experimentally determined standard Gibbs energies of formation of M2PbO4 (M = Ca, Sr, Ba) and MPbO3 (M = Sr, Ba) from their component binary monoxides and oxygen gas are combined with an estimated value for CaPbO3 to delineate systematic trends in thermodynamic stability of the ternary oxides. The trends are interpreted using concepts of tolerance factor and acid-base interactions. All the ternary oxides in these systems contain lead in the tetravalent state. The small Pb4+ ions polarize the surrounding oxygen ions and cause the formation of oxyanions which are acidic in character. Hence, the higher oxidation state of lead is stabilized in the presence of basic oxides of alkaline-earth group. A schematic subsolidus temperature-composition phase diagram is presented for the system BaO-PbO-O-2 to illustrate the change in oxidation states in binary and ternary oxides with temperature.
