Downscaling of yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) based electrochemical devices and gate oxide layers requires successful pattern transfer on YSZ thin films. Among a number of techniques available to transfer patterns to a material, reactive ion etching has the capability to offer high resolution, easily controllable, tunable anisotropic/isotropic pattern transfer for batch processing. This work reports inductively coupled reactive ion etching studies on sputtered YSZ thin films in fluorine and chlorine based plasmas and their etch chemistry analyses using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Etching in SF6 plasma gives an etch rate of 7 nm/min chiefly through physical etching process. For same process parameters, in Cl-2 and BCl3 plasmas, YSZ etch rate is 17 nm/min and 45 nm/min, respectively. Increased etch rate in BCl3 plasma is attributed to its oxygen scavenging property synergetic with other chemical and physical etch pathways. BCl3 etched YSZ films show residue-free and smooth surface. The surface atomic concentration ratio of Zr/Y in BCl3 etched films is closer to as-annealed YSZ thin films. On the other hand, Cl-2 etched films show surface yttrium enrichment. Selectivity ratio of YSZ over silicon (Si), silicon dioxide (SiO2) and silicon nitride (Si3N4) are 1:2.7, 1:1, and 1:0.75, respectively, in BCl3 plasma. YSZ etch rate increases to 53 nm/min when nonoxygen supplying carrier wafer like Si3N4 is used. (C) 2015 American Vacuum Society.

Friction-stir processing (FSP) has been proven as a successful method for the grain refinement of high-strength aluminum alloys. The most important attributes of this process are the fine-grain microstructure and characteristic texture, which impart suitable properties in the as-processed material. In the current work, FSP of the precipitation-hardenable aluminum alloy 2219 has been carried out and the consequent evolution of microstructure and texture has been studied. The as-processed materials were characterized using electron back-scattered diffraction, x-ray diffraction, and electron probe microanalysis. Onion-ring formation was observed in the nugget zone, which has been found to be related to the precipitation response and crystallographic texture of the alloy. Texture development in the alloy has been attributed to the combined effect of shear deformation and dynamic recrystallization. The texture was found heterogeneous even within the nugget zone. A microtexture analysis revealed the dominance of shear texture components, with C component at the top of nugget zone and the B and A(2)* components in the middle and bottom. The bulk texture measurement in the nugget zone revealed a dominant C component. The development of a weaker texture along with the presence of some large particles in the nugget zone indicates particle-stimulated nucleation as the dominant nucleation mechanism during FSP. Grain growth follows the Burke and Turnbull mechanism and geometrical coalescence.

A comparative study of two bacterial strains namely, Bacillus licheniformis and Bacillus firmus in the production of bioflocculants was made. The highest bioflocculant yield of 16.55 g/L was obtained from B. licheniformis (L) and 10 g/L from B. firmus (F). The bioflocculants obtained from the bacterial species were water soluble and insoluble in organic solvents. FTIR spectral analysis revealed the presence of hydroxyl, carboxyl and sugar derivatives in the bioflocculants. Thermal characterization by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed the crystalline transition and the melting point (T-m) at 90-100 degrees C. Effects of bioflocculant dosage and pH on the flocculation of clay fines were evaluated. Highest bioflocculation efficiency on kaolin clay suspensions was observed at an optimum bioflocculant dosage of 5 g/L. The optimum pH range for the maximum bioflocculation was at pH 7-9. Bioflocculants exhibited high efficiency in dye decolorization. The maximum Cr (VI) removal was found to be 85 % for L (bioflocculant dosage at 2 g/L). This study demonstrates that microbial bioflocculants find potential applications in mineral processing such as selective flocculation of mineral fines, decolorization of dye solutions and in the remediation of toxic metal solutions. The objective of the present work is to study the effect of electrical process Parameters (duty cycle and frequency) on morphological, structural, and in-vitro corrosion characteristics of oxide films formed on zirconium by plasma electrolytic oxidation in an electrolyte system consisting of 5 g/L of trisodium orthophosphate. The oxide films fabricated on zirconium by systematically varying the duty cycle and frequency are characterized for its phase composition, surface morphology, chemical composition, roughness, wettability, surface energy, scratch resistance, corrosion resistance, apatite forming ability and osteoblast cell adhesion. X-ray diffraction pattern of all the oxide films showed the predominance of m-ZrO2 phase. Dense and uniform films with thickness varying from 9 to 15 mu m and roughness in the range of 0.62 to 1.03 mu m are formed. Porosity of oxide films is found to be increased with an increase infrequency. The water contact angle results demonstrated that the oxide films exhibited similar hydrophilicity to zirconium substrate. All oxide films showed improved corrosion resistance, as indicated by far lower corrosion current density and passive corrosion potential compared to the zirconium substrate in simulated body fluid environment, and among the four different combinations of duty cycle and frequency employed in the present study, the oxide film formed at 95% duty cycle and 50 Hz frequency (HDLF film) showed superior pitting corrosion resistance, which can be attributed to its pore free morpholOgy. Scratch test results showed that the HDLF oxide film adhered firmly to the substrate by developing a notable scratch resistance at 19.5 +/- 1.2.N. Besides the best corrosion resistance and scratch retistance, the HDLF film also showed good apatite forming ability and osteo sarcoma cell adhesion on its surface. The HDLF oxide film on zirconium with superior surface characteristics is believed to be useful for various types of implants in the dental and orthopedic fields. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. In the current study, correlation of microstructure evolution with bulk crystallographic texture formation during friction stir processing (FSP) of commercial aluminum alloys has been attempted. Electron back-scattered diffraction and X-ray diffraction techniques were employed for characterizing the nugget zone of optimum friction stir processed samples. Volume fraction of measured texture components revealed that the texture formation in aluminum alloys is similar irrespective of the alloy composition. Recrystallization behavior during FSP was more of a composition dependent phenomenon.

In this work, it is demonstrated that the in situ growth of oriented nanometric aggregates of partially inverted zinc ferrite can potentially pave a way to alter and tune magnetocrystalline anisotropy that, in turn, dictates ferromagnetic resonance frequency (f(FMR)) by inducing strain due to aggregation. Furthermore, the influence of interparticle interaction on magnetic properties of the aggregates is investigated. Mono-dispersed zinc ferrite nanoparticles (<5 nm) with various degrees of aggregation were prepared through decomposition of metal-organic compounds of zinc (II) and iron (III) in an alcoholic solution under controlled microwave irradiation, below 200 degrees C. The nanocrystallites were found to possess high degree of inversion (>0.5). With increasing order of aggregation in the samples, saturation magnetization (at 5 K) is found to decrease from 38 emu/g to 24 emu/g, while coercivity is found to increase gradually by up to 100% (525 Oe to 1040 Oe). Anisotropy-mediated shift of f(FMR) has also been measured and discussed. In essence, the result exhibits an easy way to control the magnetic characteristics of nanocrystalline zinc ferrite, boosted with significant degree of inversion, at GHz frequencies. The mechanisms of densification and creep were examined during spark plasma sintering (SPS) of alumina doped with a low and high level of zirconia or yttria, over a temperature range of 1173-1573 K and stresses between 25 and 100 MPa. Large additions of yttria led clearly to in situ reactions during SPS and the formation of a yttrium-aluminum garnet phase. Dopants generally lead to a reduction in the densification rate, with substantial reductions noted in samples with similar to 5.5 vol% second phase. In contrast to a stress exponent of n similar to 1 for pure alumina, the doped aluminas displayed n similar to 2 corresponding to an interface-controlled diffusion process. The higher activation energies in the composites are consistent with previous data on creep and changes in the interfacial energies. The results reveal a compensation effect, such that an increase in the activation energy is accompanied by a corresponding increase in the pre-exponential term for diffusion.

This paper reports the dynamic compression behavior of ultrafine grained (Hf, Zr)B-2-SiC composites, sintered using reactive spark plasma sintering at 1600 degrees C for 10 min. Dynamic strength of similar to 2.3 GPa has been measured using Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) tests in a reproducible manner at strain rates of 800-1300 s(-1). A comparison with competing boride based armor ceramics, in reference to the spectrum of properties evaluated, establishes the potential of (Hf, Zr)B-2-SiC composites for armor applications. Experiments were conducted at laboratory level to treat the oxides of nitrogen (NOx) present in raw and dry biodiesel exhaust utilizing a combination of electric discharge plasma and bauxite residue, i. e., red mud, an industrial waste byproduct from the aluminum industry. In this paper, the adsorption and a possible catalytic property of bauxite residue are discussed. Nonthermal plasma was generated using dielectric barrier discharges initiated by ac/repetitive pulse energization. The effect of corona electrodes on the plasma generation was qualitatively studied through NOx cleaning. The plasma reactor and adsorbent reactors were connected in cascade while treating the exhaust. The diesel generator, running on biodiesel fuel, was electrically loaded to study the effectiveness of the cascade system in cleaning the exhaust. Interestingly, under the laboratory conditions studied, plasma-bauxite residue combination has shown good synergistic properties and enhanced the NOx removal up to about 90%. With proper scaling up, the suggested cascade system may become an economically feasible option to treat the exhaust in larger installations. The results were discussed emphasizing the role of bauxite residue as an adsorbent and as a room temperature catalyst.

Mechanical properties of thin films such as residual stress and hardness are of paramount importance from the device fabrication point of view. Intrinsic stress in sputtered films can be tensile or compressive as decided by the number density and the energy of the plasma species striking the growing film. In the presence of hydrogen we analyzed the applicability of idealized stress reversal curve for amorphous silicon thin films deposited by DC, pulsed DC (PDC) and RF sputtering. We are successfully able to correlate the microstructure with the stress reversal and hardness. We observed a stress reversal from compressive to tensile with hydrogen incorporation. It was found that unlike in idealized stress reversal curve case, though the energy of plasma species is less in DC plasma, DC deposited films exhibit more compressive stress, followed by PDC and RF deposited films. A tendency towards tensile stress from compressive stress was observed at similar to 13, 18 and 23 at%H for DC, PDC and RF deposited films respectively, which is in exact agreement with the vacancy to void transition in the films. Regardless of the sputtering power mode, the hardness of a-Si:H films is found to be maximum at C-H similar to 10 at%H. Enhancement in hardness with C-H (up to C-H similar to 10 at%H) is attributed to increase of Si-H bonds. Beyond C-H similar to 10 at%H, hardness starts falling. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Statins are known to modulate cell surface cholesterol (CSC) and AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) in nonneural cells; however no study demonstrates whether CSC and AMPK may regulate simvastatin induced neuritogenesis (SIN). We found that simvastatin (SIM) maintains CSC as shown by Fillipin III staining, Flotillin-2 protein expression / localization and phosphorylation of various receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs) in the plasma membrane. Modulation of CSC revealed that SIN is critically dependent on this CSC. Simultaneously, phospho array for mitogen activated protein kinases (MAPKs) revealed PI3K / Akt as intracellular pathway which modulates lipid pathway by inhibiting AMPK activation. Though, SIM led to a transient increase in AMPK phosphorylation followed by a sudden decline; the effect was independent of PI3K. Strikingly, AMPK phosphorylation was regulated by protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) activity which was enhanced upon SIM treatment as evidenced by increase in threonine phosphorylation. Moreover, it was observed that addition of AMP analogue and PP2A inhibitor inhibited SIN. Biocomposition of neurites shows that lipids form a major part of neurites and AMPK is known to regulate lipid metabolism majorly through acetyl CoA carboxylase (ACC). AMPK activity is negative regulator of ACC activity and we found that phosphorylation of ACC started to decrease after 6 hrs which becomes more pronounced at 12 hrs. Addition of ACC inhibitor showed that SIN is dependent on ACC activity. Simultaneously, addition of Fatty acid synthase (FAS) inhibitor confirmed that endogenous lipid pathway is important for SIN. We further investigated SREBP-1 pathway activation which controls ACC and FAS at transcriptional level. However, SIM did not affect SREBP-1 processing and transcription of its target genes likes ACC1 and FAS. In conclusion, this study highlights a distinct role of CSC and ACC in SIN which might have implication in process of neuronal differentiation induced by other agents.

Although HA is highly biocompatible, one of the major disadvantages of HA include the lack of antibacterial property. In an earlier study, we demonstrated the potential role of magnetic field stimulation on bactericidal property in vitro. Following this, it was hypothesized that antibacterial property can be realized if bacteria are grown on magnetic biocomposites in vitro. In addressing this issue, this study demonstrates the development of HA-Fe3O4-based magnetic substrate with multifunctional properties. For this purpose, HA-xFe(3)O(4) (x: 10, 20 and 40wt%) powder compositions were sintered using uniquely designed spark plasma sintering conditions (three stage sintering with final holding temperature of 1050 degrees C for 5min). A saturation magnetization of 24emu/g is measured with HA-40%Fe3O4. Importantly, all the HA-Fe3O4 composites demonstrated bactericidal property by rupturing the membrane of Escherichia coli bacteria, while supporting cell growth of metabolically active human fetal osteoblast cells over 8d culture. A systematic decrease in bacterial viability with Fe3O4 addition is consistent with a commensurate increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS).

This paper deals with processing the EEG signals obtained from 16 spatially arranged electrodes to measure coupling or synchrony between the frontal, parietal, occipital and temporal lobes of the cerebrum under the eyes open and eyes closed conditions. This synchrony was measured using magnitude squared coherence, Short Time Fourier Transform and wavelet based coherences. We found a pattern in the time-frequency coherence as we moved from the nasion to the inion of the subject's head. The coherence pattern obtained from the wavelet approach was found to be far more capable of picking up peaks in coherence with respect to frequency when compared to the regular Fourier based coherence. We detected high synchrony between frontal polar electrodes that is missing in coherence plots between other electrode pairs. The study has potential applications in healthcare.

Gas discharge plasmas used for thinfilm deposition by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) must be devoid of contaminants, like dust or active species which disturb the intended chemical reaction. In atmospheric pressure plasma systems employing an inert gas, the main source of such contamination is the residual air inside the system. To enable the construction of an atmospheric pressure plasma (APP) system with minimal contamination, we have carried out fluid dynamic simulation of the APP chamber into which an inert gas is injected at different mass flow rates. On the basis of the simulation results, we have designed and built a simple, scaled APP system, which is capable of holding a 100 mm substrate wafer, so that the presence of air (contamination) in the APP chamber is minimized with as low a flow rate of argon as possible. This is examined systematically by examining optical emission from the plasma as a function of inert gas flow rate. It is found that optical emission from the plasma shows the presence of atmospheric air, if the inlet argon flow rate is lowered below 300 sccm. That there is minimal contamination of the APP reactor built here, was verified by conducting an atmospheric pressure PECVD process under acetylene flow, combined with argon flow at 100 sccm and 500 sccm. The deposition of a polymer coating is confirmed by infrared spectroscopy. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy shows that the polymer coating contains only 5% of oxygen, which is comparable to the oxygen content in polymer deposits obtained in low-pressure PECVD systems.
