Electron diffraction and high-resolution electron microscopy have been employed to differentiate among icosahedral, decagonal and crystalline particles that occur in as-cast and rapidly solidified Al-Mn-Cu alloys. The resemblance between decagonal quasicrystals and crystals in their electron diffraction patterns is striking. The crystalline structure is based on the orthorhombic ‘Al3Mn’ structure, but also a new monoclinic phase called ‘X’ has been discovered and described here. The present observations are also closely related to the orthorhombic structures in Al60Mn11Ni4. The occurrence of fine-scale twinning and fragmentation into domains explains the complex diffraction effects.

The present work is aimed at developing a bioactive, corrosion resistant and anti bacterial nanostructured silver substituted hydroxyapatite/titania (AgHA/TiO(2)) composite coating in a single step on commercially pure titanium (Cp Ti) by plasma electrolytic processing (PEP) technique. For this purpose 2.5 wt% silver substituted hydroxyapatite (AgHA) nanoparticles were prepared by microwave processing technique and were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) methods. The as-synthesized AgHA particles with particle length ranging from 60 to 70 nm and width ranging from 15 to 20 nm were used for the subsequent development of coating on Cp Ti. The PEP treated Cp Ti showed both titania and AgHA in its coating and exhibited an improved corrosion resistance in 7.4 pH simulated body fluid (SBF) and 4.5 pH osteoclast bioresorbable conditions compared to untreated Cp Ti. The in vitro bioactivity test conducted under Kokubo SBF conditions indicated an enhanced apatite forming ability of PEP treated Cp Ti surface compared to that of the untreated Cp Ti. The Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method or antibiotic sensitivity test conducted with the test organisms of Escherichia coli (E. coli) for 24 h showed a significant zone of inhibition for PEP treated Cp Ti compared to untreated Cp Ti. The W, V, Ce, Zr, Fe, and Cu metal ion substituted nanocrystalline anatase TiO2 was prepared by solution combustion method and characterized by XRD, Raman, BET, EPR, XPS, IR TGA, UV absorption, and photoluminescence measurements. The structural studies indicate that the solid solution formation was limited to a narrow range of concentrations of the dopant ions. The photocatalytic degradation of 4-nitrophenol under UV and solar exposure was investigated with Ti1-xMxO2±δ. The degradation rates of 4-nitrophenol with these catalysts were lesser than the degradation rates of 4-nitrophenol with undoped TiO2 both with UV exposure and solar radiation. However, the photocatalytic activities of most metal ion doped TiO2 are higher than the activity of the commercial TiO2, Degussa P25. The decrease in photocatalytic activity is correlated with decrease in photoluminescence due to electron states of metal ions within the band gap of TiO2.

Deleterious topological-closed-packed (tcp) phases grow in the interdiffusion zone in turbine blades mainly because of the addition of refractory elements such as Mo and W in the Ni- and Co-based superalloys. CoNi/Mo and CoNi/W diffusion couples are prepared to understand the growth mechanism of the phases in the interdiffusion zone. Instead of determining the main and cross-interdiffusion coefficients following the conventional method, we preferred to determine the average effective interdiffusion coefficients of two elements after fixing the composition of one element more or less the same in the interdiffusion zone. These parameters can be directly related to the growth kinetics of the phases and shed light on the atomic mechanism of diffusion. In both systems, the diffusion rate of elements and the phase layer thickness increased because of the addition of Ni in the solid solution phase, probably because of an increase in driving force. On the other hand, the growth rate of the mu phase and the diffusion coefficient of the species decreased because of the addition of Ni. This indicates the change in defect concentration, which assists diffusion. Further, we revisited the previously published Co-Ni-Mo and Co-Ni-W ternary phase diagrams and compared them with the composition range of the phases developed in the interdiffusion zone. Different composition ranges of the tcp phases are found, and corrected phase diagrams are shown. The outcome of this study will help to optimize the concentration of elements in superalloys to control the growth of the tcp phases.

The present study describes the course of microstructure evolution during accumulative roll bonding (ARB) of dissimilar aluminum alloys AA2219 and AA5086. The two alloys were sandwiched as alternate layers and rolled at 300 degrees C up to 8 passes with 50% height reduction per pass. A strong bonding between successive layers accompanied by substantial grain refinement (similar to 200-300 nm) is achieved after 8 passes of ARB. The processing schedule has successfully maintained the iso-strain condition up to 6 cycles between the two alloys. Afterwards, the fracture and fragmentation of AA5086 layers dominate the microstructure evolution. Mechanical properties of the 8 pass ARB processed material were evaluated in comparison to the two starting alloy sheets via room temperature tensile tests along the rolling direction. The strength of the 8 pass ARB processed material lies between that of the two starting alloys while the ductility decreases after ARB than that of the two constituent starting alloys. These differences in mechanical behavior have been attributed to the microstructural aspects of the individual layer and the fragmentation process. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We report investigations on the texture, corrosion and wear behavior of ultra-fine grained (UFG) Ti-13Nb-Zr alloy, processed by equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE) technique, for biomedical applications. The microstructure obtained was characterized by X-ray line profile analysis, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and electron back scattered diffraction (EBSD). We focus on the corrosion resistance and the fretting behavior, the main considerations for such biomaterials, in simulated body fluid. To this end. potentiodynamic polarization tests were carried out to evaluate the corrosion behavior of the UFG alloy in Hanks solution at 37 degrees C. The fretting wear behavior was carried out against bearing steel in the same conditions. The roughness of the samples was also measured to examine the effect of topography on the wear behavior of the samples. Our results showed that the ECAE process increases noticeably the performance of the alloy as orthopedic implant. Although no significant difference was observed in the fretting wear behavior, the corrosion resistance of the UFG alloy was found to be higher than the non-treated material. (c) 2012 Elsevier B.V. AlxTi1-xN/CrN multilayer coatings were fabricated by magnetron sputtering and those hardness variations were studied by observing the crack propagation and measuring the chemical bonding state of nitrides by Ti addition. While AlN/CrN multilayer shown stair-like crack propagation, AlxTi1-xN/CrN multilayer illustrated straight crack propagation. Most interestingly, Ti addition induced more broken nitrogen bonds in the nitride multilayers, leading to the reduction of hardness. However, the hardness of Al0.25Ti0.75N/CrN multilayer, having high Ti contents, increased by the formation of many Ti-N bond again instead of Al-N bond. From these results, we found that linear crack propagation behavior was dominated by broken nitrogen bonds in the AlxT1-xN/CrN multilayer coatings.

The present work is aimed at studying the influence of electrolyte chemistry on the voltage-time (V-T) response characteristics, phase structure, surface morphology, film growth rate and corrosion properties of titania films fabricated by micro arc oxidation (MAO) on Cp Ti. The titania films were developed with a sodium phosphate based reference electrolyte comprising the additives such as sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), sodium nitrite (NaNO2) and urea (CO(NH2)(2)). The phase composition, surface morphology, elemental composition and thickness of the films were assessed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) techniques. The corrosion characteristics of the fabricated films were studied under Kokubo simulated body fluid (SBF) condition by potentiodynamic polarization, long term potential and linear polarization resistance (LPR) measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) methods. In addition, the corrosion characteristics of the grown films were analyzed by EIS curve fitting and equivalent circuit modeling. Salt spray test (SST) as per ASTM B 117 standard was also conducted to verify the corrosion resistance of the grown films. The XRD results showed that the titania films were composed of both anatase and rutile phases at different proportions. Besides, the films grown in carbonate and nitrite containing electrolyte systems showed an enhanced growth of their rutile phase in the 1 0 1] direction which could be attributed to the modifications introduced in the growth process by the abundant oxygen available during the process. The SEM-EDX and elemental mapping results showed that the respective electrolyte borne elements were incorporated and distributed uniformly in all the films. Among all the grown films under study, the film developed in carbonate containing electrolyte system exhibited considerably improved corrosion resistance due to suitable modifications in its structural and morphological characteristics. The rate of anatase to rutile phase transformation and the rutile growth direction were strongly influenced by the abundant oxidizing species available during the film growth process. Accumulative roll bonding of two aluminium alloys, AA2219 and AA5086 was carried out up to 8 passes. During the course of ARB, the deformation inhomogeneity between the two alloy layers results in interfacial instability after the 4th pass, necking of the AA5086 layers after the 6th pass and fracture along the necked regions after the 7th and 8th pass. The EBSD analysis shows deformation bands along the interfaces after 8 passes of ARB. The ARB-processed materials predominantly show characteristic deformation texture components. The weak texture after the 2nd pass results from the combination of a weakly-textured starting AA2219 layer and a strongly-textured starting AA5086 layer. A strong deformation texture forms due to the high imposed strain after a higher number of ARB passes. Subgrain formation and related shear banding induces copper/S components in the case of the small elongated grains, while planar slip leads to the formation of brass component in the large elongated grains.

Titanium-carbon (Ti-C) thin films of different compositions were prepared by a combination of pulsed DC (for Ti target) and normal DC (for graphite target) magnetron co-sputtering on oxidized silicon and fused quartz substrates. At 33.7 at.% of C content, pure hcp Ti transforms into fcc-TiC with a preferential orientation of (2 2 0) along with (1 1 1) and (2 0 0). A clear transformation in the preferential orientation from (2 2 0) to (1 1 1) has been observed when the C content was increased to 56 at.%. At 62.5 at.% of C, TiC precipitates in an amorphous carbon matrix whereas further increase in C leads to X-ray amorphous films. The cross-sectional scanning electron microscope images reveal that the films with low carbon content consists of columnar grains, whereas, randomly oriented grains are in an amorphous carbon matrix at higher carbon content. A dramatic variation was observed in the mechanical properties such as hardness, H, from 30 to 1 GPa and in modulus, E, from 255 to 25 GPa with varying carbon content in the films. Resistance to plastic deformation parameter was observed as 0.417 for films containing 62.5 at.% of C. Nanoscratch test reveals that the films are highly scratch resistant with a coefficient of friction ranging from 0.15 to 0.04. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Compositional dependent investigations of the bulk GeTe chalcogenides alloys added with different selenium concentrations are carried out by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electron probe micro-analyzer (EPMA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The measurements reveal that GeTe crystals are predominant in alloys up to 0.20 at.% of Se content indicating interstitial occupancy of Se in the Ge vacancies. Raman modes in the GeTe alloys changes to GeSe modes with the addition of Se. Amorphousness in the alloy increases with increase of Se and 0.50 at.% Se alloy forms a homogeneous amorphous phase with a mixture of Ge-Se and Te-Se bonds. Structural changes are explained with the help of bond theory of solids. Crystallization temperature is found to be increasing with increase of Se, which will enable the amorphous stability. For the optimum 0.50 at.% Se alloy, the melting temperature has reduced which will reduce the RESET current requirement for the phase change memory applications. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Bulk samples of S40Se60-xSbx (with x=10, 20, 30, 40 at. %) were prepared from high purity S, Se and Sb by melt quenching method. XRD studies revealed that all the samples have poly-crystalline phase. The variation in optical properties with composition has been investigated by XPS and Raman spectroscopy. The intensity of XPS core level spectra changes with addition of Sb clearly interprets the optical properties change due to compositional variation. The Raman shift and new peak formation in these samples clearly shows the structural modifications due to Sb addition.

In view of the importance of the suicides in the high temperature applications, the diffusion behaviour is compared in different systems for two types of silicides, XSi2 and X5Si3 (X=Nb, Mo, V). Atomic mechanism of diffusion and defects present in the structure are discussed. In both the phases, Si has faster diffusion rate than the metal species. This is expected from the nearest neighbour (NN) bonds present in the XSi2 phase but rather unusual in the X5Si3 phase. Relative mobilities of the species calculated indicate the presence of high concentration of Si antisites. Moreover, the concentration of the defects is different in different systems to find different diffusion rates.

The effect of Tb/Dy ratio on the structural and magnetic properties of (Tb,Dy)Fe-2 class of alloys has been investigated using nine alloys of TbxDy1-xFe1.95 (x = 0-1) covering the entire range. Our results indicate that the three phases viz. (Tb,Dy)Fe-2 (major phase), (Tb,Dy)Fe-3 and(Tb,Dy)-solid solution (minor phases) coexist in all the alloys. The volume fraction of pro-peritectic (Tb,Dy)Fe-3 phase however, has a minimum at x = 0.4 and a maximum at x = 0.6 compositions. The volume fraction of this phase decreases upon heat treatment at 850 degrees C and 1000 degrees C. A Widmanstatten type precipitate of (Tb,Dy)Fe-3 was observed for Dy-rich compositions (0 <= x <= 0.5). The microstructural investigations indicate that the ternary phase equilibria of Tb-Dy-Fe are sensitive to Tb/Dy ratio including the expansion of (Tb,Dy)Fe-2 phase field which is in contrast to the pseudo-binary assumption that is followed in available literature to date. The lattice parameter, Curie temperature and coercivity are found to increase with Tb addition. Split of (440) peak of (Tb,Dy)Fe-2 observed in x >= 0.3 alloys indicate, a spin reorientation transition from 100] to 111] occurs with Tb addition. (C) 2012 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

We report low-dimensional fabrication of technologically important giant dielectric material CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) using soft electron beam lithographic technique. Sol-gel precursor solution of CCTO was prepared using inorganic metal nitrates and Ti-isopropoxide. Employing the prepared precursor solution and e-beam lithographically fabricated resist mask CCTO dots with similar to 200 nm characteristic dimension were fabricated on platinized Si (111) substrate. Phase formation, chemical purity and crystalline nature of fabricated low dimensional structures were investigated with X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED), respectively. Morphological investigations were carried out with the help of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). This kind of solution based fabrication of patterned low-dimensional high dielectric architectures might get potential significance for cost-effective technological applications.
