The demixing in an LCST mixture of PS/PVME (polystyrene/poly(vinyl methyl ether)) was probed here by melt rheology in the presence of gold nanoparticles which were densely coated with varying graft lengths of PS. The graft density for the gold nanoparticles coated with 3 kDa PS was ca. Sigma = 1.7 chains/nm(2), and that for 53 kDa PS was ca. Sigma = 1.2 chains/nm(2). The evolution of morphology, as the blends transit through the metastable and the unstable envelopes of the phase diagram, and the localization of the gold nanoparticles upon demixing were monitored using in situ hot-stage AFM and confocal Raman imaging. Interestingly, gold nanoparticles coated with 3 kDa polystyrene (PS(3 kDa)-g-nAu) were localized in the PVME phase, whereas gold nanoparticles coated with 53 kDa polystyrene (PS(53 kDa)-g-nAu) were localized in the PS phase of the blend. While the localization of PS(3 kDa)-g-nAu in the PVME phase can be expected to be of entropic origin due to expulsion from the PS phase as R-g,R-matrix chains > R-g,R-grafted chains (where R-g is the radius of gyration of the polymer chain), the localization of PS(53 kDa)-g-nAu in the PS phase is believed to be facilitated by favorable melt/graft interactions. The latter nanoparticles also delayed the demixing by 12 degrees C with respect to the neat mixture. The observed changes were addressed in context to enthalpic interactions between the grafted PS and the free PS, the entropic losses (deformational entropic losses on blending, translational entropic loss of the free PS, and the conformational entropic loss of the grafted PS), and the interface of the grafted and the free chains.

Thermally induced demixing in an LCST mixture, polystyrene (PS)/polyvinyl methyl ether] (PVME), was used as a template to design materials with high electrical conductivity. This was facilitated by gelation of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) in a given phase of the blends. The MWNTs were mixed in the miscible blends and the thermodynamic driven demixing further resulted in selective localization in the PVME phase of the blends. This was further confirmed by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The time dependent gelation of MWNTs at shallow quench depth, evaluated using isochronal temperature sweep by rheology, was studied by monitoring the melt electrical conductivity of the samples in situ by an LCR meter coupled to a rheometer. By varying the composition in the mixture, several intricate shapes like gaskets and also coatings capable of attenuating the EM radiation in the microwave frequency can be derived. For instance, the PVME rich mixtures can be molded in the form of a gasket, O-ring and other intricate shapes while the PS rich mixtures can be coated onto an insulating polymer to enhance the shielding effectiveness (SE) for EM radiation. The SE of the various materials was analyzed using a vector network analyzer in both the X-band (8.2 to 12 GHz) and the K-u-band (12 to 18 GHz) frequency. The improved SE upon gelation of MWNTs in the demixed blends is well evident by comparing the SE before and after demixing. A reflection loss of -35 dB was observed in the blends with 2 wt% MWNTs. Further, by coating a layer of ca. 0.15 mm of PS/PVME/MWNT, a SE of -15 dB at 18 GHz could be obtained.

Two novel triads based on a diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) central core and two 4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (BODIPY) units attached by thiophene rings have been synthesised having high molar extinction coefficients. These triads were characterised and used as donor materials in small molecule, solution processable organic solar cells. Both triads were blended with PC71BM as an acceptor in different ratios by wt% and their photovoltaic properties were studied. For both the triads a modest photovoltaic performance was observed, having an efficiency of 0.65%. Moreover, in order to understand the ground and excited state properties and vertical absorption profile of DPP and BODIPY units within the triads, theoretical DFT and TDDFT calculations were performed.

The enzymatic biodegradation of polydioxanone (PDO) in trifluoroethanol (TFE) at various temperatures (25-55 degrees C) was studied with two different types of lipases, namely immobilized enzyme Novozym 435 and free enzyme porcine pancreas lipase. The biodegradation process was monitored by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Both enzymes showed the optimum activity at 37 degrees C and Novozym 435 exhibited better thermal stability over the experimental temperature range. A continuous distribution kinetic model was employed to describe the biodegradation process and the model was used to fit the experimental data satisfactorily and obtain kinetic parameters. We report the morphology-controlled synthesis of aluminium (Al) doped zinc oxide (ZnO) nanosheets on Al alloy (AA-6061) substrate by a low-temperature solution growth method without using any external seed layer and doping process. Doped ZnO nanosheets were obtained at low temperatures of 60-90 degrees C for the growth time of 4 hours. In addition to the synthesis, the effect of growth temperature on the morphological changes of ZnO nanosheets is also reported. As-synthesized nanosheets are characterized by FE-SEM, XRD TEM and XPS for their morphology, crystallinity, microstructure and compositional analysis respectively. The doping of Al in ZnO nanosheets is confirmed with EDXS and XPS. Furthermore, the effect of growth temperature on the morphological changes was studied in the range of 50 to 95 degrees C. It was found that the thickness and height of the nanosheets varied with respect to the growth temperature. The study has given an important insight into the structural morphology with respect to the growth temperature, which in turn enabled us to determine the growth temperature window for the ZnO nanosheets. These Al doped ZnO nanosheets have potential application possibilities in gas sensors, solar cells and energy harvesting devices like nanogenerators.

Experimental studies (circular dichroism and ultra-violet (UV) absorption spectra) and large scale atomistic molecular dynamics simulations (accompanied by order parameter analyses) are combined to establish a number of remarkable (and unforeseen) structural transformations of protein myoglobin in aqueous ethanol mixture at various ethanol concentrations. The following results are particularly striking. (1) Two well-defined structural regimes, one at x(EtOH) similar to 0.05 and the other at x(EtOH) similar to 0.25, characterized by formation of distinct partially folded conformations and separated by a unique partially unfolded intermediate state at x(EtOH) similar to 0.15, are identified. (2) Existence of non-monotonic composition dependence of (i) radius of gyration, (ii) long range contact order, (iii) residue specific solvent accessible surface area of tryptophan, and (iv) circular dichroism spectra and UV-absorption peaks are observed. Interestingly at x(EtOH) similar to 0.15, time averaged value of the contact order parameter of the protein reaches a minimum, implying that this conformational state can be identified as a molten globule state. Multiple structural transformations well known in water-ethanol binary mixture appear to have considerably stronger effects on conformation and dynamics of the protein. We compare the present results with studies in water-dimethyl sulfoxide mixture where also distinct structural transformations are observed along with variation of co-solvent composition. Diffusion couple experiments are conducted in Co-Ni-Pt system at 1200 degrees C and in Co-Ni-Fe system at 1150 degrees C, by coupling binary alloys with the third element. Uphill diffusion is observed for both Co and Ni in Pt rich corner of the Co-Ni-Pt system, whereas in the Co-Ni-Fe system, it is observed for Co. Main and cross interdiffusion coefficients are calculated at the composition of intersection of two independent diffusion profiles. In both the systems, the main interdiffusion coefficients are positive over the whole composition range and the cross interdiffusion coefficients show both positive and negative values at different regions. Hardness measured by performing the nanoindentations on diffusion couples of both the systems shows the higher values at intermediate compositions.

Here we demonstrate that in interbacterial quorum signal moderators, N-acylhomoserine lactones (AHLs), the stabilization of bioactive pharmacophore lactone against lysis is through the e(-) withdrawing N-acyl motif which reduces lactone carbonyl polarization. This lysis is assisted by weak (<0.05 kcal mol(-1)) contacts between N-acyl O and lactone C'. The interactions that preclude this weak contact, in the free and receptor-bound AHLs, improve lactone halflife and hence are key to the design of the antibacterial AHL analogues. In the present study a versatile and efficient adsorbent with high adsorption capacity for adsorption of Congo red dye in aqueous solution at ambient temperature without adjusting any pH is presented over the Ag modified calcium hydroxyapatite (CaHAp). CaHAp and Ag-doped CaHAp materials were synthesized using facile aqueous precipitation method. The physico-chemical properties of the materials were determined by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-Visible spectroscopy, N-2 physisorption and acidity was determined by n-butylamine titration and pyridine adsorption methods. XRD analysis confirmed all adsorbents exhibit hexagonal CaHAp structure with P6(3)/m space group. TEM analysis confirms the rod like morphology of the adsorbents and the average length of the rods were in the range of 40-45 nm. Pyridine adsorption results indicate increase in number of Lewis acid sites with Ag doping in CaHAp. Adsorption capacity of CaHAp was found increased with Ag content in the adsorbents. Ag (10): CaHAp adsorbent showed superior adsorption performance among all the adsorbents for various concentrations of Congo red (CR) dye in aqueous solutions. The amount of CR dye adsorbed on Ag (10): CaHAp was found to be 49.89-267.81 mg g(-1) for 50-300 ppm in aqueous solution. A good correlation between adsorption capacity and acidity of the adsorbents was observed. The adsorption kinetic data of adsorbents fitted well with pseudo second-order kinetic model with correlation coefficients ranged from 0.998 to 0.999. The equilibrium adsorption data was found to best fit to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. (C) 2015 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The problem of cooperative beamforming for maximizing the achievable data rate of an energy constrained two-hop amplify-and-forward (AF) network is considered. Assuming perfect channel state information (CSI) of all the nodes, we evaluate the optimal scaling factor for the relay nodes. Along with individual power constraint on each of the relay nodes, we consider a weighted sum power constraint. The proposed iterative algorithm initially solves a set of relaxed problems with weighted sum power constraint and then updates the solution to accommodate individual constraints. These relaxed problems in turn are solved using a sequence of Quadratic Eigenvalue Problems (QEP). The key contribution of this letter is the generalization of cooperative beamforming to incorporate both the individual and weighted sum constraint. Furthermore, we have proposed a novel algorithm based on Quadratic Eigenvalue Problem (QEP) and discussed its convergence.

Cu2SnS3 thin films were deposited by a facile sot-gel technique followed by annealing. The annealed films were structurally characterized by grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The crystal structure was found to be tetragonal with crystallite sizes of 2.4-3 nm. Texture coefficient calculations from the GIXRD revealed the preferential orientation of the film along the (112) plane. The morphological investigations of the films were carried out using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and the composition using electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The temperature dependent current, voltage characteristics of the Cu2SnS3/AZnO heterostructure were studied. The log I-log V plot exhibited three regions of different slopes showing linear ohmic behavior and non-linear behavior following the power law. The temperature dependent current voltage characteristics revealed the variation in ideality factor and barrier height with temperature. The Richardson constant was calculated and its deviation from the theoretical value revealed the inhomogeneity of the barrier heights. Transport characteristics were modeled using the thermionic emission model. The Gaussian distribution of barrier heights was applied and from the modified Richardson plot the value of the Richardson constant was found to be 47.18 A cm(-2) K-2. (c) 2015 Elsevier B.V. A modified approach to obtain approximate numerical solutions of Fredholin integral equations of the second kind is presented. The error bound is explained by the aid of several illustrative examples. In each example, the approximate solution is compared with the exact solution, wherever possible, and an excellent agreement is observed. In addition, the error bound in each example is compared with the one obtained by the Nystrom method. It is found that the error bound of the present method is smaller than the ones obtained by the Nystrom method. Further, the present method is successfully applied to derive the solution of an integral equation arising in a special Dirichlet problem. (C) 2015 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Thin films of Cu2SnS3 (CTS) were deposited by the facile solution processed sol-gel route followed by a low-temperature annealing. The Cu-Sn-thiourea complex formation was analysed using Fourier Transform Infrared spectrophotometer (FTIR). The various phase transformations and the deposition temperature range for the initial precursor solution was determined using Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) studies revealed the tetragonal phase formation of the CTS annealed films. Raman spectroscopy studies further confirmed the tetragonal phase formation and the absence of any deterioratory secondary phases. The morphological investigations and compositional analysis of the films were determined using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) respectively. Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) was used to estimate the surface roughness of 1.3 nm. The absorption coefficient was found to be 10(4) cm(-1) and bandgap 1.3 eV which qualifies CTS to be a potential candidate for photovoltaic applications. The refractive index, extinction coefficient and relative permittivity of the film were measured by Spectroscopic ellipsometry. Hall effect measurements, indicated the p type nature of the films with a hole concentration of 2 x 10(18) cm(-3), electrical conductivity of 9 S/cm and a hole mobility of 29 cm(2)/V. The properties of CTS as deduced from the current study, present CTS as a potential absorber layer material for thin film solar cells. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The use of copolymer and polymer blends widened the possibility of creating materials with multilayered architectures. Hierarchical polymer systems with a wide array of micro and nanostructures are generated by thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) in partially miscible polymer blends. Various parameters like the interaction between the polymers, concentration, solvent/non-solvent ratio, and quenching temperature have to be optimized to obtain these micro/nanophase structures. Alternatively, the addition of nanoparticles is another strategy to design materials with desired hetero-phase structures. The dynamics of the polymer nanocomposite depends on the statistical ordering of polymers around the nanoparticle, which is dependent on the shape of the nanoparticle. The entropic loss due to deformation of polymer chains, like the repulsive interactions due to coiling and the attractive interactions in the case of swelling has been highlighted in this perspective article. The dissipative particle dynamics has been discussed and is correlated with the molecular dynamics simulation in the case of polymer blends. The Cahn Hillard Cook model on variedly shaped immobile fillers has shown difference in the propagation of the composition wave. The nanoparticle shape has a contributing effect on the polymer particle interaction, which can change the miscibility window in the case of these phase separating polymer blends. Quantitative information on the effect of spherical particles on the demixing temperature is well established and further modified to explain the percolation of rod shaped particles in the polymer blends. These models correlate well with the experimental observations in context to the dynamics induced by the nanoparticle in the demixing behavior of the polymer blend. The miscibility of the LCST polymer blend depends on the enthalpic factors like the specific interaction between the components, and the solubility product and the entropic losses occurring due to the formation of any favorable interactions. Hence, it is essential to assess the entropic and enthalpic interactions induced by the nanoparticles independently. The addition of nanoparticles creates heterogeneity in the polymer phase it is localized. This can be observed as an alteration in the relaxation behavior of the polymer. This changes the demixing behavior and the interaction parameter between the polymers. The compositional changes induced due to the incorporation of nanoparticles are also attributed as a reason for the altered demixing temperature. The particle shape anisotropy causes a direction dependent depletion, which changes the phase behavior of the blend. The polymer-grafted nanoparticles with varying grafting density show tremendous variation in the miscibility of the blend. The stretching of the polymer chains grafted on the nanoparticles causes an entropy penalty in the polymer blend. A comparative study on the different shaped particles is not available up to date for understanding these aspects. Hence, we have juxtaposed the various computational studies on nanoparticle dynamics, the shape effect of NPs on homopolymers and also the cases of various polymer blends without nanoparticles to sketch a complete picture on the effect of various particles on the miscibility of LCST blends.
