The title compound, C(14)H(17)FO(2), was obtained from anti-4a, 9a:8a,10a-diepoxy-1,4,4a,5,8,8a, 9,9a, 10,10a-decahydroanthracene via tandem hydrogen-fluoride-mediated epoxide ring-opening and transannular oxacyclization. With the two cyclohexene rings folded towards the oxygen bridge, the title tetracyclic fluoroalcohol molecule displays a conformation reminiscent of a pagoda. The crystal packing is effected via intermolecular O-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds, which link the molecules into a zigzag chain along the b axis.

CFD investigations are carried out to study the heat flux and temperature distribution in the calandria using a 3–Dimensional RANS code. Internal flow computations and experimental studies are carried out for a calandria embedded with a matrix of tubes working together as a reactor. Numerical investigations are carried on the Calandria reactor vessel with horizontal inlets and outlets located on top and the bottom to study the flow pattern and the associated temperature distribution. The computations have been carried out to simulate fluid flow and convective heat transfer for assigned near–to working conditions with different moderator injection rates and reacting heat fluxes. The results of computations provide an estimate of the tolerance bands for safe working limits for the heat dissipation at different working conditions by virtue of prediction of the hot spots in the calandria. The isothermal CFD results are validated by a set of experiments on a specially designed scaled model conducted over a range of flows and simulation parameters. The comparison of CFD results with experiments show good agreement.

Rotational spectra of C(6)H(5)CCH center dot center dot center dot H(2)S, C(6)H(5)CCH center dot center dot center dot H(2)(34)S, C(6)H(5)CCH center dot center dot center dot HDS, C(6)H(5)CCH center dot center dot center dot D(2)S and C(6) H(5)CCD center dot center dot center dot H(2)S complexes have been observed using a pulsed nozzle Fourier transform microwave spectrometer. The observed spectrum is consistent with a structure in which hydrogen sulfide is located over the phenyl ring pi cloud and the distance between the centers of masses of the two monomers is 3.74 +/- 0.01 angstrom. In the complex, the H(2)S unit is shifted from the phenyl ring center towards the acetylene group. The vibrationally averaged structure has an effective Cs symmetry. Ab initio calculations were performed at MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ level of theory to locate the possible geometries of the complex. The calculations reveal the experimentally observed structure to be more stable than a coplanar arrangement of the monomers, which was observed for the C(6)H(5)CCH center dot center dot center dot H(2)O complex. Atoms in molecule theoretical analysis shows the presence of S-H center dot center dot center dot pi hydrogen bond. For the parent isotopologue, each transition frequency was found to split into two resulting from an interchange of the equivalent hydrogens of H(2)S unit in the complex. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. The title compound, C(15)H(15)F(3)N(2)O(2)S, adopts a conformation with an intramolecular C-H center dot center dot center dot pi interaction. The dihedral angles between the planes of the 4-(trifluoromethyl) phenyl and ester groups with the plane of the six-membered tetrahydropyrimidine ring are 81.8 (1) and 16.0 (1)degrees, respectively. In the crystal structure, intermolecular N-H center dot center dot center dot S hydrogen bonds link pairs of molecules into dimers and N-H center dot center dot center dot O interactions generate hydrogen-bonded molecular chains along the crystallographic a axis.

The paper reports the operational experience from a 100 kWe gasification power plant connected to the grid in Karnataka. Biomass Energy for Rural India (BERI) is a program that implemented gasification based power generation with an installed capacity of 0.88 MWe distributed over three locations to meet the electrical energy needs in the district of Tumkur. The operation of one 100 kWe power plant was found unsatisfactory and not meeting the designed performance. The Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, the technology developer, took the initiative to ensure the system operation, capacity building and prove the designed performance. The power plant connected to the grid consists of the IISc gasification system which includes reactor, cooling, cleaning system, fuel drier and water treatment system to meet the producer gas quality for an engine. The producer gas is used as a fuel in Cummins India Limited, GTA 855 G model, turbo charged engine and the power output is connected to the grid. The system has operated for over 1000 continuous hours, with only about 70 h of grid outages. The total biomass consumption for 1035 h of operation was 111 t at an average of 107 kg/h. Total energy generated was 80.6 MWh reducing over loot of CO(2) emissions. The overall specific fuel consumption was about 1.36 kg/kWh, amounting to an overall efficiency from biomass to electricity of about 18%. The present operations indicate that a maintenance schedule for the plant can be at the end of 1000 h. The results for another 1000 h of operation by the local team are also presented. The critical properties of orthorhombic Pr(0.6)Sr(0.4)MnO(3) single crystals were investigated by a series of static magnetization measurements along the three different crystallographic axes as well as by specific heat measurements. A careful range-of-fitting-analysis of the magnetization and susceptibility data obtained from the modified Arrott plots shows that Pr(0.6)Sr(0.4)MnO(3) has a very narrow critical regime. Nevertheless, the system belongs to the three-dimensional (3D) Heisenberg universality class with short-range exchange. The critical exponents obey Widom scaling and are in excellent agreement with the single scaling equation of state M(H,epsilon) = vertical bar epsilon vertical bar(beta) f(+/-)(H/vertical bar epsilon vertical bar((beta+gamma)); with f(+) for T > T(c) and f(-) for T < T(c). A detailed analysis of the specific heat that account for all relevant contributions allows us to extract and analyze the contribution related to the magnetic phase transition. The specific heat indicates the presence of a linear electronic term at low temperatures and a prominent contribution from crystal field excitations of Pr. A comparison with data from literature for PrMnO(3) shows that a Pr-Mn magnetic exchange is responsible for a sizable shift in the lowest lying excitation.

The physical chemistry of "aluminothermic" reduction of calcium oxide in vacuum is analyzed. Basic thermodynamic data required for the analysis have been generated by a variety of experiments. These include activity measurements in liquid AI-Ca alloys and determination of the Gibbs energies of formation of calcium aluminates. These data have been correlated with phase relations in the Ca-AI-0 system at 1373 K. The various stages of reduction, the end products and the corresponding equilibrium partial pressures of calcium have been established from thermodynamic considerations. In principle, the recovery of calcium can be improved by reducing the pressure in the reactor. However,, the cost of a high vacuum system and the enhanced time for reduction needed to achieve higher yields makes such a practice uneconomic. Aluminum contamination of calcium also increases at low pressures. The best compromise is to carry the reduction up to the stage where 3CaO-Al,O, is formed as the product. This corresponds to an equilibrium calcium partial pressure of 31.3 Pa at 1373 K and 91.6 Pa at 1460 K. Calcium can be extracted at this pressure using mechanical pumps in approximately 8 to 15 hr, depending on the size and the fill ratio of the retort and porosity of the charge briquettes.

Candida albicans, a human fungal pathogen, undergoes morphogenetic changes that are associated with virulence. We report here that GAL102 in C. albicans encodes a homolog of dTDP-glucose 4,6-dehydratase, an enzyme that affects cell wall properties as well as virulence of many pathogenic bacteria. We found that GAL102 deletion leads to greater sensitivity to antifungal drugs and cell wall destabilizing agents like Calcofluor white and Congo red. The mutant also formed biofilms consisting mainly of hyphal cells that show less turgor. The NMR analysis of cell wall mannans of gal102 deletion strain revealed that a major constituent of mannan is missing and the phosphomannan component known to affect virulence is greatly reduced. We also observed that there was a substantial reduction in the expression of genes involved in biofilm formation but increase in the expression of genes encoding glycosylphosphatidylinositol-anchored proteins in the mutant. These, along with altered mannosylation of cell wall proteins together might be responsible for multiple phenotypes displayed by the mutant. Finally, the mutant was unable to grow in the presence of resident peritoneal macrophages and elicited a weak pro-inflammatory cytokine response in vitro. Similarly, this mutant elicited a poor serum pro-inflammatory cytokine response as judged by IFN gamma and TNF alpha levels and showed reduced virulence in a mouse model of systemic candidiasis. Importantly, an Ala substitution for a conserved Lys residue in the active site motif YXXXK, that abrogates the enzyme activity also showed reduced virulence and increased filamentation similar to the gal102 deletion strain. Since inactivating the enzyme encoded by GAL102 makes the cells sensitive to antifungal drugs and reduces its virulence, it can serve as a potential drug target in combination therapies for C. albicans and related pathogens.

The specific objective of this paper is to develop direct digital control strategies for an ammonia reactor using quadratic regulator theory and compare the performance of the resultant control system with that under conventional PID regulators. The controller design studies are based on a ninth order state-space model obtained from the exact nonlinear distributed model using linearization and lumping approximations. The evaluation of these controllers with reference to their disturbance rejection capabilities and transient response characteristics, is carried out using hybrid computer simulation.
