In this paper, we report on the application aspect of piezoelectric ZnO thin film deposited on flexible phynox alloy substrate. Highly crystalline piezoelectric ZnO thin films were deposited by RF reactive magnetron sputtering and were characterized by XRD, SEM, AFM analysis. Also, the effective d(33) coefficient value measurement was performed. The actuator element is a circular diaphragm of phynox alloy on to which piezoelectric ZnO thin film was deposited. ZnO film deposited actuator element was firmly fixed inside a suitable concave perspex mounting designed specifically for micro actuation purpose. The actuator element was excited at different frequencies for the supply voltages of 2V, 5V and 8V. Maximum deflection of the ZnO film deposited diaphragm was measured to be 1.25 mu m at 100 Hz for the supply voltage of 8V. The developed micro actuator has the potential to be used as a micro pump for pumping nano liters to micro liters of fluids per minute for numerous biomedical and aerospace applications.

Success in the advancement of thermoacoustic field led the researchers to develop the thermoacoustic engines which found its applications in various fields such as refrigeration, gas mixture separation, natural gas liquefaction, and cryogenics. The objective of this study is to design and fabricate the twin thermoacoustic heat engine (TAHE) producing the acoustic waves with high resonance frequencies which is used to drive a thermoacoustic refrigerator efficiently by the influence of geometrical parameters and working fluids. Twin TAHE has gained significant attention due to the production of high intensity acoustic waves than single TAHE. In order to drive an efficient thermoacoustic refrigerator, a twin thermoacoustic heat engine is built up and its performance are analysed by varying the resonator length and working fluid. The performance is measured in terms of onset temperature difference, resonance frequency and pressure amplitude of the oscillations generated from twin TAHE. The simulation is performed using free software DeltaEC, from LANL, USA. The simulated DeltaEC results are compared with experimental results and the deviations are found within +10%.

Supercritical carbon dioxide based Brayton cycle for possible concentrated solar power applications is investigated and compared with trans- and sub-critical operations of the same fluid. Thermal efficiency, specific work output and magnitude of irreversibility generation are used as some of the performance indicators. While the thermal efficiency increases almost linearly with low side pressure in the sub- and trans-critical cycles, it attains a maximum in the supercritical regime at 85 bar after which there are diminishing returns on increasing the low side pressure. It is also found that supercritical cycle is capable of producing power with a thermal efficiency of >30% even at a lower source temperature (820K) and accounting for foreseeable non-idealities albeit with a higher turbine inlet pressure (similar to 300 bar) which is not matched by a conventional sub-critical cycle even with a high source temperature of 978K. The reasons for lower efficiency than in an ideal cycle are extracted from an irreversibility analysis of components, namely, compressor, regenerator, turbine and gas cooler. Low sensitivity to the source temperature and extremely small volumetric flow rates in the supercritical cycle could offset the drawback of high pressures through a compact system.

The flow produced by a rigid symmetric NACA0015 airfoil purely pitching at a fixed location in quiescent fluid (the limiting case of infinite Strouhal number) is studied using visualizations and particle image velocimetry. A weak jet is generated whose inclination changes continually with time. This meandering is observed to be random and independent of the initial conditions, over a wide range of pitching parameters. Phototaxis is a directed swimming response dependent upon the light intensity sensed by microorganisms. Positive phototaxis denotes motion directed towards the source of light and negative phototaxis is motion directed away from it. In this paper, we investigate the onset of bioconvection in a suspension of anisotropic scattering phototactic algae illuminated by collimated radiation at the top. The basic state of the system is defined by the zero fluid flow and the up and down swimming, caused by the positive and negative phototaxis, is balanced by the diffusion. A comprehensive numerical study of the linear stability is presented with particular emphasis on the forward scattering effect. The onset of bioconvection occurs either via a stationary mode or an oscillatory mode. The transition from a stationary mode to an oscillatory mode or vice versa has been observed as the anisotropic coefficient is varied for certain parameter values. (C) 2012 Elsevier Masson SAS. Boundary layers are subject to favorable and adverse pressure gradients because of both the temporal and spatial components of the pressure gradient. The adverse pressure gradient may cause the flow to separate. In a closed loop unsteady tunnel we have studied the initiation of separation in unsteady flow past a constriction (bluff body) in a channel. We have proposed two important scalings for the time when boundary layer separates. One is based on the local pressure gradient and the other is a convective time scale based on boundary layer parameters. The flow visualization using a dye injection technique shows the flow structure past the body. Nondimensional shedding frequency (Strouhal number) is calculated based on boundary layer and momentum thicknesses. Strouhal number based on the momentum thickness shows a close agreement with that for flat plate and circular cylinder.

The experimental solubilities of the mixture of nitrophenol (m- and p-) isomers were determined at 308, 318 and 328 K over a pressure range of 10-17.55 MPa. Compared to the binary solubilities, the ternary solubilities of m-nitrophenol increased at 308, 318 and 328 K. The ternary solubilities of p-nitrophenol increased at 308 K, while the ternary solubilities decreased at lower pressures and increased at higher pressure at 318 and 328 K. The solubilities of the solid mixtures in supercritical carbon dioxide (SCCO2) were correlated with solution models by incorporating the non-idealities using activity coefficient based models. The Wilson and NRTL activity coefficient models were applied to determine the nature of the interactions between the molecules. The equation developed by using the NRTL model has three parameters and correlates mixture solubilities of solid solutes in terms of temperature and cosolute composition. The equation derived from the Wilson model contains five parameters and correlates solubilities in terms of temperature, density and cosolute composition. These two new equations developed in this work were used to correlate the solubilities of 25 binary solid mixtures including the current data. The average AARDs of the model equations derived using the NRTL and Wilson models for the solid mixtures were found to be 7% and 4%, respectively. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The cylindrical Couette device is commonly employed to study the rheology of fluids, but seldom used for dense granular materials. Plasticity theories used for granular flows predict a stress field that is independent of the shear rate, but otherwise similar to that in fluids. In this paper we report detailed measurements of the stress as a function of depth, and show that the stress profile differs fundamentally from that of fluids, from the predictions of plasticity theories, and from intuitive expectation. In the static state, a part of the weight of the material is transferred to the walls by a downward vertical shear stress, bringing about the well-known Janssen saturation of the stress in vertical columns. When the material is sheared, the vertical shear stress changes sign, and the magnitudes of all components of the stress rise rapidly with depth. These qualitative features are preserved over a range of the Couette gap and shear rate, for smooth and rough walls and two model granular materials. To explain the anomalous rheological response, we consider some hypotheses that seem plausibleapriori, but showthat none survive after careful analysis of the experimental observations. We argue that the anomalous stress is due to an anisotropic fabric caused by the combined actions of gravity, shear, and frictional walls, for which we present indirect evidence from our experiments. A general theoretical framework for anisotropic plasticity is then presented. The detailed mechanics of how an anisotropic fabric is brought about by the above-mentioned factors is not clear, and promises to be a challenging problem for future investigations. The development of the flow of a granular material down an inclined plane starting from rest is studied as a function of the base roughness. In the simulations, the particles are rough frictional spheres interacting via the Hertz contact law. The rough base is made of a random configuration of fixed spheres with diameter different from the flowing particles, and the base roughness is decreased by decreasing the diameter of the base particles. The transition from an ordered to a disordered flowing state at a critical value of the base particle diameter, first reported by Kumaran and Maheshwari Phys. Fluids 24, 053302 (2012)] for particles with the linear contact model, is observed for the Hertzian contact model as well. The flow development for the ordered and disordered flows is very different. During the development of the disordered flow for the rougher base, there is shearing throughout the height. During the development of the ordered flow for the smoother base, there is a shear layer at the bottom and a plug region with no internal shearing above. In the shear layer, the particles are layered and hexagonally ordered in the plane parallel to the base, and the velocity profile is well approximated by Bagnold law. The flow develops in two phases. In the first phase, the thickness of the shear layer and the maximum velocity increase linearly in time till the shear front reaches the top. In the second phase, after the shear layer encompasses the entire flow, there is a much slower increase in the maximum velocity until the steady state is reached. (C) 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.

Phototaxis is a directed swimming response dependent upon the light intensity sensed by micro-organisms. Positive (negative) phototaxis denotes the motion directed towards (away from) the source of light. Using the phototaxis model of Ghorai, Panda, and Hill ''Bioconvection in a suspension of isotropically scattering phototactic algae,'' Phys. Fluids 22, 071901 (2010)], we investigate two-dimensional phototactic bioconvection in an absorbing and isotropic scattering suspension in the nonlinear regime. The suspension is confined by a rigid bottom boundary, and stress-free top and lateral boundaries. The governing equations for phototactic bioconvection consist of Navier-Stokes equations for an incompressible fluid coupled with a conservation equation for micro-organisms and the radiative transfer equation for light transport. The governing system is solved efficiently using a semi-implicit second-order accurate conservative finite-difference method. The radiative transfer equation is solved by the finite volume method using a suitable step scheme. The resulting bioconvective patterns differ qualitatively from those found by Ghorai and Hill ''Penetrative phototactic bioconvection,'' Phys. Fluids 17, 074101 (2005)] at a higher critical wavelength due to the effects of scattering. The solutions show transition from steady state to periodic oscillations as the governing parameters are varied. Also, we notice the accumulation of micro-organisms in two horizontal layers at two different depths via their mean swimming orientation profile for some governing parameters at a higher scattering albedo. A droplet residing on a vibrating surface and in the pressure antinode of an asymmetric standing wave can spread radially outward and atomize. In this work, proper orthogonal decomposition through high speed imaging is shown to predict the likelihood of atomization for various viscous fluids based on prior information in the droplet spreading phase. Capillary instabilities are seen to affect ligament rupture. Viscous dissipation plays an important role in determining the wavelength of the most unstable mode during the inception phase of the ligaments. However, the highest ligament capillary number achieved was less than 1, and the influence of viscosity in the ligament growth and breakup phases is quite minimal. It is inferred from the data that the growth of a typical ligament is governed by a balance between the inertial force obtained from the inception phase and capillary forces. By including the effect of acoustic pressure field around the droplet, the dynamics of the ligament growth phase is revealed and the ligament growth profiles for different fluids are shown to collapse on a straight line using a new characteristic time scale.

This paper reports the first observations of transition from a pre-vortex breakdown (Pre-VB) flowreversal to a fully developed central toroidal recirculation zone in a non-reacting, double-concentric swirling jet configuration and its response to longitudinal acoustic excitation. This transition proceeds with the formation of two intermediate, critical flow regimes. First, a partially penetrated vortex breakdown bubble (VBB) is formed that indicates the first occurrence of an enclosed structure as the centre jet penetration is suppressed by the growing outer roll-up eddy; resulting in an opposed flow stagnation region. Second, a metastable transition structure is formed that marks the collapse of inner mixing vortices. In this study, the time-averaged topological changes in the coherent recirculation structures are discussed based on the non-dimensional modified Rossby number (Ro(m)) which appears to describe the spreading of the zone of swirl influence in different flow regimes. Further, the time-mean global acoustic response of pre-VB and VBB is measured as a function of pulsing frequency using the relative aerodynamic blockage factor (i.e., maximum radial width of the inner recirculation zone). It is observed that all flow modes except VBB are structurally unstable as they exhibit severe transverse radial shrinkage (similar to 20%) at the burner Helmholtz resonant modes (100-110 Hz). In contrast, all flow regimes show positional instability as seen by the large-scale, asymmetric spatial shifting of the vortex core centres. Finally, the mixing transfer function M (f) and magnitude squared coherence lambda(2)(f) analysis is presented to determine the natural couplingmodes of the system dynamic parameters (u', p'), i.e., local acoustic response. It is seen that the pre-VB flow mode exhibits a narrow-band, low pass filter behavior with a linear response window of 100-105 Hz. However, in the VBB structure, presence of critical regions such as the opposed flow stagnation region alters the linearity range with the structure showing a response even at higher pulsing frequencies (100-300 Hz). The motion of DNA (in the bulk solution) and the non-Newtonian effective fluid behavior are considered separately and self-consistently with the fluid motion satisfying the no-slip boundary condition on the surface of the confining geometry in the presence of channel pressure gradients. A different approach has been developed to model DNA in the micro-channel. In this study the DNA is assumed as an elastic chain with its characteristic Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio and density. The force which results from the fluid dynamic pressure, viscous forces and electromotive forces is applied to the elastic chain in a coupled manner. The velocity fields in the micro-channel are influenced by the transport properties. Simulations are carried out for the DNAs attached to the micro-fluidic wall. Numerical solutions based on a coupled multiphysics finite element scheme are presented. The modeling scheme is derived based on mass conservation including biomolecular mass, momentum balance including stress due to Coulomb force field and DNA-fluid interaction, and charge transport associated to DNA and other ionic complexes in the fluid. Variation in the velocity field for the non-Newtonian flow and the deformation of the DNA strand which results from the fluid-structure interaction are first studied considering a single DNA strand. Motion of the effective center of mass is analyzed considering various straight and coil geometries. Effects of DNA statistical parameters (geometry and spatial distribution of DNAs along the channel) on the effective flow behavior are analyzed. In particular, the dynamics of different DNA physical properties such as radius of gyration, end-to-end length etc. which are obtained from various different models (Kratky-Porod, Gaussian bead-spring etc.) are correlated to the nature of interaction and physical properties under the same background fluid environment.

An analysis of the energy budget for the general case of a body translating in a stationary fluid under the action of an external force is used to define a power loss coefficient. This universal definition of power loss coefficient gives a measure of the energy lost in the wake of the translating body and, in general, is applicable to a variety of flow configurations including active drag reduction, self-propulsion and thrust generation. The utility of the power loss coefficient is demonstrated on a model bluff body flow problem concerning a two-dimensional elliptical cylinder in a uniform cross-flow. The upper and lower boundaries of the elliptic cylinder undergo continuous motion due to a prescribed reflectionally symmetric constant tangential surface velocity. It is shown that a decrease in drag resulting from an increase in the strength of tangential surface velocity leads to an initial reduction and eventual rise in the power loss coefficient. A maximum in energetic efficiency is attained for a drag reducing tangential surface velocity which minimizes the power loss coefficient. The effect of the tangential surface velocity on drag reduction and self-propulsion of both bluff and streamlined bodies is explored through a variation in the thickness ratio (ratio of the minor and major axes) of the elliptical cylinders.
