Thermal decomposition of propargyl alcohol (C3H3OH), a molecule of interest in interstellar chemistry and combustion, was investigated using a single pulse shock tube in the temperature ranging from 953 to 1262 K. The products identified include acetylene, propyne, vinylacetylene, propynal, propenal, and benzene. The experimentally observed overall rate constant for thermal decomposition of propargyl alcohol was found to be k = 10((10.17 +/- 0.36)) exp(-39.70 +/- 1.83)/RT) s(-1) Ab initio theoretical calculations were carried out to understand the potential energy surfaces involved in the primary and secondary steps of propargyl alcohol thermal decomposition. Transition state theory was used to predict the rate constants, which were then used and refined in a kinetic simulation of the product profile. The first step in the decomposition is C-O bond dissociation, leading to the formation of two important radicals in combustion, OH and propargyl. This has been used to study the reverse OH propargyl radical reaction, about which there appears to be no prior work. Depending on the site of attack, this reaction leads to propargyl alcohol or propenal, one of the major products at temperatures below 1200 K. A detailed mechanism has been derived to explain all the observed products.

Simple, universally adaptable techniques for fabricating conductive patterns are required to translate laboratory-scale innovations into low-cost solutions for the developing world. Silver nanostructures have emerged as attractive candidates for forming such conductive patterns. We report here the in situ formation of conductive silver-nanowire networks on paper, thereby eliminating the need for either cost-intensive ink formulation or substrate preparation or complex post-deposition sintering steps. Reminiscent of the photographic process of `salt printing', a desktop office printer was used to deposit desired patterns of silver bromide on paper, which were subsequently exposed to light and then immersed in a photographic developer. Percolating silver nanowire networks that conformally coated the paper fibres were formed after 10 min of exposure to light from a commercial halogen lamp. Thus, conductive and patterned films with sheet resistances of the order of 4 Omega/rectangle can be easily formed by combining two widely used processes - inkjet printing and photographic development.

A new representation of spatio-temporal random processes is proposed in this work. In practical applications, such processes are used to model velocity fields, temperature distributions, response of vibrating systems, to name a few. Finding an efficient representation for any random process leads to encapsulation of information which makes it more convenient for a practical implementations, for instance, in a computational mechanics problem. For a single-parameter process such as spatial or temporal process, the eigenvalue decomposition of the covariance matrix leads to the well-known Karhunen-Loeve (KL) decomposition. However, for multiparameter processes such as a spatio-temporal process, the covariance function itself can be defined in multiple ways. Here the process is assumed to be measured at a finite set of spatial locations and a finite number of time instants. Then the spatial covariance matrix at different time instants are considered to define the covariance of the process. This set of square, symmetric, positive semi-definite matrices is then represented as a third-order tensor. A suitable decomposition of this tensor can identify the dominant components of the process, and these components are then used to define a closed-form representation of the process. The procedure is analogous to the KL decomposition for a single-parameter process, however, the decompositions and interpretations vary significantly. The tensor decompositions are successfully applied on (i) a heat conduction problem, (ii) a vibration problem, and (iii) a covariance function taken from the literature that was fitted to model a measured wind velocity data. It is observed that the proposed representation provides an efficient approximation to some processes. Furthermore, a comparison with KL decomposition showed that the proposed method is computationally cheaper than the KL, both in terms of computer memory and execution time.

The present study investigates the critical role of deformation twinning and Bs-type shear bands in the evolution of deformation texture in a low stacking fault energy Ni-60Co alloy up to very large rolling strain (epsilon(t) approximate to 4). The alloy develops a strong brass-type rolling texture, and its formation is initiated at the early stages of deformation. Extensive twinning is observed at the intermediate stages of deformation, which causes significant texture reorientation towards alpha-fiber. A pseudo-in-situ electron back-scattered diffraction technique adopted to capture orientation changes within individual grains during the early stages suggests that twinning should be subsequently aided by crystallographic slip to attain alpha-fiber (< 1 1 0 >parallel to ND) orientations. Beyond 40% reduction, deformation is dominated by Bs-type shear bands, and the banding coincides with the evolution of < 1 1 1 >parallel to ND components. The volume fraction of shear bands is significant at higher strains, and crystallites within the bands preferentially show < 1 1 0 >parallel to ND components. The absence of the Cu {1 1 2}< 1 1 1 > component in the initial texture, and subsequently during rolling, indicates that, for the evolution of a brass-type texture, the presence of the Cu component is not a necessary condition. The final rolling texture is a synergistic effect of deformation twinning and shear banding. (C) 2014 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In the paper, the well known Adomian Decomposition Method (ADM) is modified to solve the parabolic equations. The present method is quite different than the numerical method. The results are compared with the existing exact or analytical method. The already known existing Adomian Decomposition Method is modified to improve the accuracy and convergence. Thus, the modified method is named as Modified Adomian Decomposition Method (MADM). The Modified Adomian Decomposition Method results are found to converge very quickly and are more accurate compared to ADM and numerical methods. MADM is quite efficient and is practically well suited for use in these problems. Several examples are given to check the reliability of the present method. Modified Adomian Decomposition Method is a non-numerical method which can be adapted for solving parabolic equations. In the current paper, the principle of the decomposition method is described, and its advantages are shown in the form of parabolic equations. (C) 2014 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) pose a high risk of exposure to the natural environment owing to their extensive usage in various consumer products. In the present study we attempted to understand the harmful effect of AgNPs at environmentally relevant low concentration levels (<= 1 ppm) towards two different freshwater bacterial isolates and their consortium. The standard plate count assay suggested that the AgNPs were toxic towards the fresh water bacterial isolates as well as the consortium, though toxicity was significantly reduced for the cells in the consortium. The oxidative stress assessment and membrane permeability studies corroborated with the toxicity data. The detailed electron microscopic studies suggested the cell degrading potential of the AgNPs, and the FT-IR studies confirmed the involvement of the surface groups in the toxic effects. No significant ion leaching from the AgNPs was observed at the applied concentration levels signifying the dominant role of the particle size, and size distribution in bacterial toxicity. The reduced toxicity for the cells in the consortium than the individual isolates has major significance in further studies on the ecotoxicity of the AgNPs. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. Zinc oxide (ZnO) and silver doped zinc oxide (ZnO:Ag) nanoparticles were prepared using nitrates of zinc and silver as oxidizers and ethylene diaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) as a fuel via low-temperature combustion synthesis (LCS) at 500 degrees C. X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern indicates the presence of silver in the hexagonal wurtzite structure of ZnO. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrum indicates the presence of Ag-Zn-O stretching vibration at 510 cm(-1). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images shows that the average particle size of ZnO and ZnO:Ag nanoparticles were found to be 58 nm and 52 nm, respectively. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) data clearly indicates the presence of Ag in ZnO crystal lattice. The above characterization techniques indicate that the incorporation of silver affects the structural and optical properties of ZnO nanoparticles. ZnO:Ag nanoparticles exhibited 3% higher photocatalytic efficiency than pure ZnO nanoparticles. ZnO:Ag nanoparticles show better photocatalytic activity for the degradation of trypan blue (TrB) compared to undoped ZnO nanoparticles. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Cobalt ferrite nanoparticles with average sizes of 14, 9 and 6 nm were synthesised by the chemical co-precipitation technique. Average particle sizes were varied by changing the chitosan surfactant to precursor molar ratio in the reaction mixture. Transmission electron microscopy images revealed a faceted and irregular morphology for the as-synthesised nanoparticles. Magnetic measurements revealed a ferromagnetic nature for the 14 and 9 nm particles and a superparamagnetic nature for the 6 nm particles. An increase in saturation magnetisation with increasing particle size was noted. Relaxivity measurements were carried out to determine T-2 value as a function of particle size using nuclear magnetic resonance measurements. The relaxivity coefficient increased with decrease in particle size and decrease in the saturation magnetisation value. The observed trend in the change of relaxivity value with particle size was attributed to the faceted nature of as-synthesised nanoparticles. Faceted morphology results in the creation of high gradient of magnetic field in the regions adjacent to the facet edges increasing the relaxivity value. The effect of edges in increasing the relaxivity value increases with decrease in the particle size because of an increase in the total number of edges per particle dispersion.

This work investigates the potential of graphene oxide-cobalt ferrite nanoparticle (GO-CoFe2O4) composite as image contrast enhancing material in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). In the preset work, GO-CoFe2O4 composites were produced by a two-step synthesis process. In the first step, graphene oxide (GO) was synthesized, and in the second step CoFe2O4 nanoparticles were synthesized in a reaction mixture containing GO to yield graphene GO-CoFe2O4 composite. Proton relaxivity value obtained from the composite was 361 mM(-1)s(-1). This value of proton relaxivity is higher than a majority of reported relaxivity values obtained using several ferrite based contrast agents.

Blends of bromo-terminated polystyrene (PS-Br) and poly(vinyl methylether) (PVME) exhibit lower critical solution temperatures. In this study, PS-Br was designed by atom transfer radical polymerization and was converted to thiol-capped polystyrene (PS-SH) by reacting with thiourea. The silver nanoparticles (nAg) were then decorated with covalently bound PS-SH macromolecules to improve the phase miscibility in the PS-Br-PVME blends. Thermally induced demixing in this model blend was followed in the presence of polystyrene immobilized silver nanoparticles (PS-g-nAg). The graft density of the PS macromolecules was estimated to be ca. 0.78 chains per nm(2). Although the matrix and the grafted molecular weights were similar, PS-g-nAg particles were expelled from the PS phase and were localized in the PVME phase of the blends. This was addressed with respect to intermediate graft density and favourable PS-PVME contacts from microscopic interactions point of view. Interestingly, blends with 0.5 wt% PS-g-nAg delayed the spinodal decomposition temperature in the blends by ca. 18 degrees C with respect to the control blends. The scale of cooperativity, as determined by differential scanning calorimetry, increased only marginally in the case of PS-g-nAg; however, it increased significantly in the presence of bare nAg particles.

A series of gemini surfactants based on cationic imidazolium ring as polar headgroup, abbreviated as lm-n-lm], 2Br(-) (n = 2, 5, 6 and 12), was synthesized. Their ability to stabilize silver nanoparticles in aqueous media was investigated. The resulting suspensions were characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). They exhibit specific morphologies by adopting different supramolecular assemblies in aqueous media depending on the internal packing arrangements and on the number of spacer methylene units -(CH2)(n)-]. Individual colloids were extracted from the aqueous to chloroform layer and spread at the air/water interface to allow the formation of well-defined Langmuir films. By analysis of the surface pressure-area isotherms, the details about the packing behavior and orientation of the imidazolium gemini surfactant capped silver nanoparticles were obtained. Morphological features of the dynamic process of monolayer compression at the air-water interface were elucidated using Brewster angle microscopy (BAM). These monolayers were further transferred on mica sheets by the Langmuir-Blodgett technique at their associated collapse pressure and the morphology of these monolayers was investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM). Electronically nonadiabatic decomposition mechanisms of dimethylnitramine (DMNA) in presence of zinc metal clusters are explored. Complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) calculation is employed for DMNA-Zn and ONIOM (Our own N-layered integrated molecular orbital and molecular mechanics) methodology is coupled with CASSCF methodology for DMNA-Zn-10 cluster. Present computational results show that DMNA-Zn clusters undergo electronically nonadiabatic reactions, rendering nitro-nitrite isomerization followed by NO elimination. The overall reactions are also found to be highly exothermic in nature. This is the first report on electronically nonadiabatic decomposition pathways of DMNA-Zn-n neutral clusters. The evolution of crystallographic texture in a nanocrystalline nickel-20 wt% cobalt alloy has been investigated for deformation up to large strains. The effect of texture on magnetic properties has been evaluated. The material shows characteristic copper-type texture at large strain levels. Microstructural examinations indicate that the evolution of texture is assisted by deformation-induced grain growth. The values of saturation magnetization and coercivity have been correlated with the crystallographic texture and grain size. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The paper presents the synthesis of a new class of gamma-gamma' cobalt-based superalloy that is free of tungsten as an alloying addition. It has much lower density and higher specific strength than the existing cobalt-based superalloys. The current superalloys have a base composition of Co-10Al and are further tuned by the addition of a binary combination of molybdenum and niobium, with the optimum composition of Co-10Al-5Mo-2Nb. The solvus temperature of the alloy (866 degrees C) can be further enhanced above 950 C by the addition of Ni to give the form Co-xNi-10Al-5Mo-2Nb, where x can be from 0 to 30 at.%. After heat treatment, these alloys exhibit a duplex microstructure with coherent cuboidal L1(2)-ordered precipitates (gamma') throughout the face-centred cubic matrix (gamma), yielding a microstructure that is very similar to nickel-based superalloys as well as recently developed Co-Al-W-based alloys. We show that the stability of the gamma' phase improves significantly with the nickel addition, which can be attributed to the increase in solvus temperature. A very high specific 0.2% proof stress of 94.3 MPa g(-1) cm(-3) at room temperature and 63.8 MPa g(-1) cm(-3) at 870 degrees C were obtained for alloy Co-30Ni-10Al-5Mo-2Nb. The remarkably high specific strength of these alloys makes this class of alloy a promising material for use at high temperature, including gas turbine applications. (C) 2014 Acta Materialia Inc.
