The electronic structure of Nd1-xYxMnO3 (x-0-0.5) is studied using x-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy at the Mn K-edge along with the DFT-based LSDA+U and real space cluster calculations. The main edge of the spectra does not show any variation with doping. The pre-edge shows two distinct features which appear well-separated with doping. The intensity of the pre-edge decreases with doping. The theoretical XANES were calculated using real space multiple scattering methods which reproduces the entire experimental spectra at the main edge as well as the pre-edge. Density functional theory calculations are used to obtain the Mn 4p, Mn 3d and O 2p density of states. For x=0, the site-projected density of states at 1.7 eV above Fermi energy shows a singular peak of unoccupied e(g) (spin-up) states which is hybridized Mn 4p and O 2p states. For x=0.5, this feature develops at a higher energy and is highly delocalized and overlaps with the 3d spin-down states which changes the pre-edge intensity. The Mn 4p DOS for both compositions, show considerable difference between the individual p(x), p(y) and p(z)), states. For x=0.5, there is a considerable change in the 4p orbital polarization suggesting changes in the Jahn-Teller effect with doping. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Semiconducting Cu3BiS3 (CBS) thin films were deposited by co-evaporation of Cu, Bi elemental metallic precursors, with in situ sulphurisation, using a quartz effusion cell. Cu3BiS3 thin films were structurally characterized by XRD and FE-SEM. The chemical bonding of the ions was examined by XPS. As deposited films were demonstrated for metal-semiconductor-metal near IR photodectection under lamp and laser illuminations. The photo current amplified to three orders and two orders of magnitude upon the IR lamp and 60 m W cm(-2) 1064 nm IR laser illuminations, respectively. Larger grains, made up of nano needle bunches aided the transport of carriers. Transport properties were explained based on the trap assisted space charge conduction mechanism. Steady state detector parameters like responsivity varied from 1.04 AW(-1) at 60 m Wcm(-2) to 0.22 AW(-1) at 20 m Wcm(-2). Detector sensitivity of 295 was found to be promising and further could be tuned for better responsivity and efficiency in utilization of near infra-red photodetector. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

Nanosized fullerene solvates have attracted widespread research attention due to recent interesting discoveries. A particular type of solvate is limited to a fixed number of solvents and designing new solvates within the same family is a fundamental challenge. Here we demonstrate that the hexagonal closed packed (HCP) phase of C-60 solvates, formed with m-xylene, can also be stabilized using toluene. Contrary to the notion on their instability, these can be stabilized from minutes up to months by tuning the occupancy of solvent molecules. Due to high stability, we could record their absorption edge, and measure excitonic life-time, which has not been reported for any C-60 solvate. Despite being solid, absorbance spectrum of the solvates is similar in appearance to that of C-60 in solution. A new absorption band appears at 673 nm. The fluorescence lifetime at 760 nm is similar to 1.2 ns, suggesting an excited state unaffected by solvent-C-60 interaction. Finally, we utilized the unstable set of HCP solvates to exchange with a second solvent by a topotactic exchange mechanism, which rendered near permanent stability to the otherwise few minutes stable solvates. This is also the first example of topotactic exchange in supramolecular crystal, which is widely known in ionic solids. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

An organic-aqueous interfacial reaction at room temperature has been employed to synthesize large-area self-assembled films consisting of PbSe single crystallites. The use of the films for the low-cost fabrication of IR-photodetectors has been explored. (111)-oriented single crystallites of PbSe self-assemble to form robust large-area films. The near-infrared photoresponse of the film measured at room temperature showed large responsivity and gain owing to trap-associated mechanisms. Low-cost, mild reaction conditions and tunability of the nature of deposits make the present strategy useful for synthesizing large-area films of functional materials for possible opto-electronic applications.

We report on Raman and Ni K-edge x-ray absorption investigations of a NiS2-xSex (with x = 0.00, 0.50/0.55, 0.60, and 1.20) pyrite family. The Ni K-edge absorption edge shows a systematic shift going from an insulating phase (x = 0.00 and 0.50) to a metallic phase (x = 0.60 and 1.20). The near-edge absorption features show a clear evolution with Se doping. The extended x-ray absorption fine structure data reveal the evolution of the local structure with Se doping which mainly governs the local disorder. We also describe the decomposition of the NiS2-xSex Raman spectra and investigate the weights of various phonon modes using Gaussian and Lorentzian profiles. The effectiveness of the fitting models in describing the data is evaluated by means of Bayes factor estimation. The Raman analysis clearly demonstrates the disorder effects due to Se alloying in describing the phonon spectra of NiS2-xSex pyrites.

A new type of copper(II) complex, CuL(phen)(2)](NO3) (CuIP), where L ((E)-N'-(2-oxoindolin-3-ylidene) benzohydrazide) is a N donor ligand and phen is the N, N-donor heterocyclic 1,10-phenanthroline, has been synthesized. The phenyl carbohydrazone conjugated isatin-based ligand L and CuIP were characterized by elemental analysis, infrared, UV-Vis, H-1 and C-13 NMR and ESI-mass spectral data, as well as single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The interaction of calf thymus DNA (CT DNA) with L and CuIP has been investigated by absorption, fluorescence and viscosity titration methods. The complex CuIP displays better binding affinity than the ligand L. The observed DNA binding constant (K-b = 4.15(+/- 0.18) x 10(5) M-1) and binding site size (s = 0.19), viscosity data together with molecular docking studies of CuIP suggest groove binding and/or a partial intercalative mode of binding to CT DNA. In addition, CuIP shows good binding propensity to the bovine serum albumin (BSA) protein, giving a K-BSA value of 1.25(+/- 0.24) x 10(6) M-1. In addition, the docking studies on DNA and human serum albumin (HSA) CuIP interactions are consistent with the consequence of binding experiments. The in vitro anti-proliferative study establishes the anticancer potency of the CuIP against the human cervical (HeLa) and breast (MCF7) cancer cells; noncancer breast epithelial (MCF10a) cells have also been investigated. CuIP shows better cytotoxicity and sensitivity towards cancer cells over noncancer ones than L under identical conditions, with the appearance of apoptotic bodies. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. A simple ball-drop impact tester is developed for studying the dynamic response of hierarchical, complex, small-sized systems and materials. The developed algorithm and set-up have provisions for applying programmable potential difference along the height of a test specimen during an impact loading; this enables us to conduct experiments on various materials and smart structures whose mechanical behavior is sensitive to electric field. The software-hardware system allows not only acquisition of dynamic force-time data at very fast sampling rate (up to 2 x 10(6) samples/s), but also application of a pre-set potential difference (up to +/- 10 V) across a test specimen for a duration determined by feedback from the force-time data. We illustrate the functioning of the set-up by studying the effect of electric field on the energy absorption capability of carbon nanotube foams of 5 x 5 x 1.2 mm(3) size under impact conditions. In the present study, amino-silane modified layered organosilicates were used to reinforce cyclic olefin copolymer to enhance the thermal, mechanical and moisture impermeable barrier properties. The optimum clay loading (4%) in the nanocomposite increases the thermal stability of the film while further loading decreases film stability. Water absorption behavior at 62 degrees C was carried out and compared with the behavior at room temperature and 48 degrees C. The stiffness of the matrix increases with clay content and the recorded strain to failure for the composite films was lower than the neat film. Dynamic mechanical analysis show higher storage modulus and low loss modulus for 2.5-4 wt% clay loading. Calcium degradation test and device encapsulation also show the evidence of optimum clay loading of 4 wt% for improved low water vapor transmission rates compared to other nanocomposite films. Studies on the optical properties of InGaN alloy of relatively higher indium content are of potential interest to understand the effect of indium content on the optical band gap of epitaxial InGaN. We report the growth of self assembled non-polar high indium clusters of In0.55Ga0.45N over non-polar (11-20) a-plane In0.17Ga0.83N epilayer grown on a-plane (11-20) GaN/(1-102) r-plane sapphire substrate using plasma assisted molecular beam epitaxy (PAMBE). Such structures are potential candidates for high brightness LEDs emitting in longer wavelengths. The high resolution X-ray diffraction studies revealed the formation of two distinct compositions of InxGa1-xN alloys, which were further confirmed by photoluminescence studies. A possible mechanism for the formation of such structure was postulated which was supported with the results obtained by energy dispersive X-ray analysis. The structure hence grown when investigated for photo-detecting properties, showed sensitivity to both infrared and ultraviolet radiations due to the different composition of InGaN region. Analysis of absorption characteristics of stacked patch arrays on moderately lossy dielectric layers
Resumo:
It is demonstrated that a square patch array on a moderately lossy dielectric can be transformed into a near-perfect absorber by the addition of a metallic square loop layer between the patch array and the metal back. In this configuration, the condition of perfect absorption can be easily obtained by modifying loop dimensions. The absorption properties of this configuration are analyzed theoretically using an equivalent circuit model and full-wave electromagnetic simulations. Experimental investigations included a bistatic radar cross-section measurement, which ensured that there are no scattered fields in other directions. An array structure built on a commercially available FR4 substrate with copper metallization is used to experimentally validate these results.

A new triarylborane-aza-BODIPY conjugate is reported. The compound consists of two blue emissive dimesitylarylborane moieties and a near-infrared (NIR) emissive aza-BOIDPY core and shows panchromatic absorption spanning approximately 300-800 nm. DFT computational studies suggest limited electronic communication between the individual fluorophore units. Hence, the partial energy transfer from blue fluorophore triarylborane to NIR chromophore aza-BODIPY unit leads to a broad dual-emissive feature covering a large part of visible and NIR region. Furthermore, the broadband emissive compound can act as a selective sensor for fluoride anion as a result of fluorescence quenching response in both visible and NIR spectral regions.

It is by now clear that the infrared sector of quantum electrodynamics (QED) has an intriguingly complex structure. Based on earlier pioneering work on this subject, two of us recently proposed a simple modification of QED by constructing a generalization of the U(1) charge group of QED to the ``Sky'' group incorporating the well-known spontaneous Lorentz violation due to infrared photons, but still compatible in particular with locality (Balachandran and Vaidya, Eur Phys J Plus 128:118, 2013). It was shown that the ``Sky'' group is generated by the algebra of angle-dependent charges and a study of its superselection sectors has revealed a manifest description of spontaneous breaking of the Lorentz symmetry. We further elaborate this approach here and investigate in some detail the properties of charged particles dressed by the infrared photons. We find that Lorentz violation due to soft photons may be manifestly codified in an angle-dependent fermion mass, modifying therefore the fermion dispersion relations. The fact that the masses of the charged particles are not Lorentz invariant affects their spin content, and time dilation formulas for decays should also get corrections.

Recently, a lot of interest has been centred on the optical properties of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), which has a similar lattice structure to graphene. Interestingly, h-BN has a wide bandgap and is biocompatible, so it has potential applications in multiphoton bioimaging, if it can exhibit large nonlinear optical (NLO) properties. However, extensive investigation into the NLO properties of h-BN have not been done so far. Here, NLO properties of 2D h-BN nanosheets (BNNS) are reported for the first time, using 1064-nm NIR laser radiation with a pulse duration of 10 ns using the Z-scan technique. The reverse saturable absorption occurs in aqueous colloidal solutions of BNNS with a very large two-photon absorption cross section (sigma(2PA)) of approximate to 57 x 10(-46) cm(4) s(-1) photon(-1). Also, by using UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, the temperature coefficient of the bandgap (dE(g)/dT) of BNNS is determined to be 5.9 meV K-1. Further defect-induced photoluminescence emission in the UV region is obtained in the 283-303 K temperature range, under excitations of different wavelengths. The present report of large sigma(2PA) combined with stability and biocompatibility could open up new possibilities for the application of BNNS as a potential optical material for multiphoton bioimaging and advanced photonic devices.

In order to obtain better materials, control over the precise location of nanoparticles is indispensable. It is shown here that ordered arrangements of nanoparticles, possessing different characteristics (electrical/ magnetic dipoles), in the blend structure can result in excellent microwave absorption. This is manifested from a high reflection loss of ca. -67 dB for the best blend structure designed here. To attenuate electromagnetic radiation, the key parameters of high electrical conductivity and large dielectric/magnetic loss are targeted here by including a conductive material multiwall carbon nanotubes, MWNTs], ferroelectric nanostructured material with associated relaxations in the GHz frequency barium titanate, BT] and lossy ferromagnetic nanoparticles nickel ferrite, NF]. In this study, bi-continuous structures were designed using 50/50 (by wt) blends of polycarbonate (PC) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). The MWNTs were modified using an electron acceptor molecule, a derivative of perylenediimide, which facilitates p-p stacking with the nanotubes and stimulates efficient charge transport in the blends. The nanoscopic materials have specific affinity towards the PVDF phase. Hence, by introducing surface-active groups, an ordered arrangement can be tailored. To accomplish this, both BT and NF were first hydroxylated followed by the introduction of amine-terminal groups on the surface. The latter facilitated nucleophilic substitution reactions with PC and resulted in their precise location. In this study, we have shown for the first time that by a compartmentalized approach, superior EM attenuation can be achieved. For instance, when the nanoparticles were localized exclusively in the PVDF phase or in both the phases, the minimum reflection losses were ca. -18 dB (for the MWNT/BT mixture) and -29 dB (for the MWNT/NF mixture), and the shielding occurred primarily through reflection. Interestingly, by adopting the compartmentalized approach wherein the lossy materials were in the PC phase and the conductive materials (MWNT) were in the PVDF phase, outstanding reflection losses of ca. -57 dB (for the BT and MWNT combination) and -67 dB (for the NF and MWNT combination) were noted and the shielding occurred primarily through absorption. Thus, the approach demonstrates that nanoscopic structuring in the blends can be achieved under macroscopic processing conditions and this strategy can further be explored to design microwave absorbers.

We present a framework for obtaining reliable solid-state charge and optical excitations and spectra from optimally tuned range-separated hybrid density functional theory. The approach, which is fully couched within the formal framework of generalized Kohn-Sham theory, allows for the accurate prediction of exciton binding energies. We demonstrate our approach through first principles calculations of one- and two-particle excitations in pentacene, a molecular semiconducting crystal, where our work is in excellent agreement with experiments and prior computations. We further show that with one adjustable parameter, set to produce the known band gap, this method accurately predicts band structures and optical spectra of silicon and lithium fluoride, prototypical covalent and ionic solids. Our findings indicate that for a broad range of extended bulk systems, this method may provide a computationally inexpensive alternative to many-body perturbation theory, opening the door to studies of materials of increasing size and complexity.
