Various leg exercises have been recommended to prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a condition where a blood clot forms in the deep veins, especially during long-haul flights. Accessing the benefit of each of these exercises in avoiding the DVT, which can be fatal, is important in the context of suggesting the correct and the most beneficial exercises. Present work aims at demonstrating the fiber Bragg grating (FBG)-based sensing methodology for measuring surface strains generated on the skin of the calf muscle to evaluate the suggested airline exercises to avoid DVT. As the dataset in the experiment involves multiple subjects performing these exercises, an inertial measurement unit has been used to validate the repetitiveness of each of the exercises. The surface strain on the calf muscle obtained using the FBG sensor, which is a measure of the calf muscle deformation, has been compared against the variation of blood velocity in the femoral vein of the thigh measured using a commercial electronic-phased array color Doppler ultrasound system. Apart from analyzing the effectiveness of suggested exercises, a new exercise which is more effective in terms of strain generated to avoid DVT is proposed and evaluated. ZnS quantum dots (QDs) of different sizes are synthesized by a simple chemical co-precipitation method at room temperature, by varying pH value of the reaction mixture. Samples are characterized by an X-ray diffractometer, transmission electron microscope, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, etc. Linear optical properties, including UV-visible absorption and photoluminescence emission characteristics, of as-prepared QDs are measured. Size dependent nonlinear optical property, such as second harmonic generation (SHG) of 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser fundamental radiation in the synthesized ZnS QDs, is reported for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, by using the standard Kurtz-Perry powder method. In not to study the possibility of the synthesized ZnS QDs in different device applications ZnS/PMMA (polymethylmethacrylate) nanocomposites are also synthesized. The presence of weak chemical interaction between the polymer matrix and ZnS QDs is confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Thermal properties of the nanocomposites are studied by differential scanning calorimetry and thermo-gravimetric analysis techniques, which show that the composites are stable up to similar to 300 degrees C temperature. Spatial resolution in photoacoustic and thermoacoustic tomography is ultrasound transducer (detector) bandwidth limited. For a circular scanning geometry the axial (radial) resolution is not affected by the detector aperture, but the tangential (lateral) resolution is highly dependent on the aperture size, and it is also spatially varying (depending on the location relative to the scanning center). Several approaches have been reported to counter this problem by physically attaching a negative acoustic lens in front of the nonfocused transducer or by using virtual point detectors. Here, we have implemented a modified delay-and-sum reconstruction method, which takes into account the large aperture of the detector, leading to more than fivefold improvement in the tangential resolution in photoacoustic (and thermoacoustic) tomography. Three different types of numerical phantoms were used to validate our reconstruction method. It is also shown that we were able to preserve the shape of the reconstructed objects with the modified algorithm. (C) 2014 Optical Society of America

The sparse estimation methods that utilize the l(p)-norm, with p being between 0 and 1, have shown better utility in providing optimal solutions to the inverse problem in diffuse optical tomography. These l(p)-norm-based regularizations make the optimization function nonconvex, and algorithms that implement l(p)-norm minimization utilize approximations to the original l(p)-norm function. In this work, three such typical methods for implementing the l(p)-norm were considered, namely, iteratively reweighted l(1)-minimization (IRL1), iteratively reweighted least squares (IRLS), and the iteratively thresholding method (ITM). These methods were deployed for performing diffuse optical tomographic image reconstruction, and a systematic comparison with the help of three numerical and gelatin phantom cases was executed. The results indicate that these three methods in the implementation of l(p)-minimization yields similar results, with IRL1 fairing marginally in cases considered here in terms of shape recovery and quantitative accuracy of the reconstructed diffuse optical tomographic images. We develop iterative diffraction tomography algorithms, which are similar to the distorted Born algorithms, for inverting scattered intensity data. Within the Born approximation, the unknown scattered field is expressed as a multiplicative perturbation to the incident field. With this, the forward equation becomes stable, which helps us compute nearly oscillation-free solutions that have immediate bearing on the accuracy of the Jacobian computed for use in a deterministic Gauss-Newton (GN) reconstruction. However, since the data are inherently noisy and the sensitivity of measurement to refractive index away from the detectors is poor, we report a derivative-free evolutionary stochastic scheme, providing strictly additive updates in order to bridge the measurement-prediction misfit, to arrive at the refractive index distribution from intensity transport data. The superiority of the stochastic algorithm over the GN scheme for similar settings is demonstrated by the reconstruction of the refractive index profile from simulated and experimentally acquired intensity data. The model-based image reconstruction approaches in photoacoustic tomography have a distinct advantage compared to traditional analytical methods for cases where limited data is available. These methods typically deploy Tikhonov based regularization scheme to reconstruct the initial pressure from the boundary acoustic data. The model-resolution for these cases represents the blur induced by the regularization scheme. A method that utilizes this blurring model and performs the basis pursuit deconvolution to improve the quantitative accuracy of the reconstructed photoacoustic image is proposed and shown to be superior compared to other traditional methods via three numerical experiments. Moreover, this deconvolution including the building of an approximate blur matrix is achieved via the Lanczos bidagonalization (least-squares QR) making this approach attractive in real-time. The paper proposes a non-destructive method for simultaneous measurement of in-plane and out-of-plane displacements and strains undergone by a deformed specimen from a single moire fringe pattern obtained on the specimen in a dual beam digital holographic interferometry setup. The moire fringe pattern encodes multiple interference phases which carry the information on multidimensional deformation. The interference field is segmented in each column and is modeled as multicomponent quadratic/cubic frequency-modulated signal in each segment. Subsequently, the product form of modified cubic phase function is used for accurate estimation of phase parameters. The estimated phase parameters are further utilized for direct estimation of the unwrapped interference phases and phase derivatives. The simulation and experimental results are provided to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Monte Carlo modeling of light transport in multilayered tissue (MCML) is modified to incorporate objects of various shapes (sphere, ellipsoid, cylinder, or cuboid) with a refractive-index mismatched boundary. These geometries would be useful for modeling lymph nodes, tumors, blood vessels, capillaries, bones, the head, and other body parts. Mesh-based Monte Carlo (MMC) has also been used to compare the results from the MCML with embedded objects (MCML-EO). Our simulation assumes a realistic tissue model and can also handle the transmission/reflection at the object-tissue boundary due to the mismatch of the refractive index. Simulation of MCML-EO takes a few seconds, whereas MMC takes nearly an hour for the same geometry and optical properties. Contour plots of fluence distribution from MCML-EO and MMC correlate well. This study assists one to decide on the tool to use for modeling light propagation in biological tissue with objects of regular shapes embedded in it. For irregular inhomogeneity in the model (tissue), MMC has to be used. If the embedded objects (inhomogeneity) are of regular geometry (shapes), then MCML-EO is a better option, as simulations like Raman scattering, fluorescent imaging, and optical coherence tomography are currently possible only with MCML. This paper presents a strategy to determine the shortest path of a fixed-wing Miniature Air Vehicle (MAV), constrained by a bounded turning rate, to eventually fly along a given straight line, starting from an arbitrary but known initial position and orientation. Unlike the work available in the literature that solves the problem using the Pontryagin's Minimum Principle (PMP) the trajectory generation algorithm presented here considers a geometrical approach which is intuitive and easy to understand. This also computes the explicit solution for the length of the optimal path as a function of the initial configuration. Further, using a 6-DOF model of a MAV the generated optimal path is tracked by an autopilot consisting of proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers. The simulation results show the path generation and tracking for different cases.

In this research work, we introduce a novel approach for phase estimation from noisy reconstructed interference fields in digital holographic interferometry using an unscented Kalman filter. Unlike conventionally used unwrapping algorithms and piecewise polynomial approximation approaches, this paper proposes, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, a signal tracking approach for phase estimation. The state space model derived in this approach is inspired from the Taylor series expansion of the phase function as the process model, and polar to Cartesian conversion as the measurement model. We have characterized our approach by simulations and validated the performance on experimental data (holograms) recorded under various practical conditions. Our study reveals that the proposed approach, when compared with various phase estimation methods available in the literature, outperforms at lower SNR values (i.e., especially in the range 0-20 dB). It is demonstrated with experimental data as well that the proposed approach is a better choice for estimating rapidly varying phase with high dynamic range and noise. An optimal measurement selection strategy based on incoherence among rows (corresponding to measurements) of the sensitivity (or weight) matrix for the near infrared diffuse optical tomography is proposed. As incoherence among the measurements can be seen as providing maximum independent information into the estimation of optical properties, this provides high level of optimization required for knowing the independency of a particular measurement on its counterparts. The proposed method was compared with the recently established data-resolution matrix-based approach for optimal choice of independent measurements and shown, using simulated and experimental gelatin phantom data sets, to be superior as it does not require an optimal regularization parameter for providing the same information. In the current study, amino silane functionalized cenosphere particles was used as a reinforcing filler in poly(vinyl butyral) matrix and were made by melt blending. The changes observed in the dielectric performance of the composite films with varying weight percentage of cenosphere particle in the matrix were investigated. The dielectric property and impedance spectroscopy were evaluated as a function of applied frequency in the range of 50 Hz to 5 MHz. It is observed that, because of orientation polarization of the PVB polymer, the permittivity and impedance decrease, whereas conductivity increases. Tangent loss graph indicates that the property of the matrix is associated with geometrical fill factor and the lowest quality factor. Therefore, above 10 kHz, these composites can be considered as dielectric loss-less material. (C) 2013 Society of Plastics Engineers

We review the two kinds of forces that near-resonant light exerts on atoms the spontaneous force that is used for laser cooling, and the stimulated force that is used for coherent manipulation of atoms. We will discuss an experiment where laser cooling is used to collimate an atomic beam of sodium atoms, and the stimulated force within one period of a one-dimensional standing wave is used as a lens to focus the atoms to a narrow line about 20 nm wide. This kind of atom lithography is an example of the general field of atom optics in which light is used to manipulate atoms.

Stability of a fracture toughness testing geometry is important to determine the crack trajectory and R-curve behavior of the specimen. Few configurations provide for inherent geometric stability, especially when the specimen being tested is brittle. We propose a new geometrical construction called the single edge notched clamped bend specimen (SENCB), a modified form of three point bending, yielding stable cracking under load control. It is shown to be particularly suitable for small-scale structures which cannot be made free-standing, (e.g., thin films, coatings). The SENCB is elastically clamped at the two ends to its parent material. A notch is inserted at the bottom center and loaded in bending, to fracture. Numerical simulations are carried out through extended finite element method to derive the geometrical factor f(a/W) and for different beam dimensions. Experimental corroborations of the FEM results are carried out on both micro-scale and macro-scale brittle specimens. A plot of vs a/W, is shown to rise initially and fall off, beyond a critical a/W ratio. The difference between conventional SENB and SENCB is highlighted in terms of and FEM simulated stress contours across the beam cross-section. The `s of bulk NiAl and Si determined experimentally are shown to match closely with literature values. Crack stability and R-curve effect is demonstrated in a PtNiAl bond coat sample and compared with predicted crack trajectories from the simulations. The stability of SENCB is shown for a critical range of a/W ratios, proving that it can be used to get controlled crack growth even in brittle samples under load control.
