A series of mononuclear five-coordinate cobalt(II) complexes, Co(dbdmp)(X)]Y, where dbdmp=N,N-diethyl-N,N-bis((3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazol-1-yl)methyl)ethane-1, 2-diamine, X=N-3(-)/NCO-/NCS- and Y=PF6-/BF4-/ClO4-, have been synthesized and characterized by microanalyses and spectroscopic techniques. Crystal structures of Co(N-3)(dbdmp)]PF6 (1), Co(N-3)(dbdmp)]ClO4 (3), Co(NCO)(dbdmp)]PF6 (4), Co(NCO)(dbdmp)]ClO4 (6), and Co(NCS)(dbdmp)]ClO4 (9) have been solved by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies and showed that all the complexes have distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometry; PF6- counter anion containing complexes Co(N-3)(dbdmp)]PF6 and Co(NCO)(dbdmp)]PF6 have chiral space groups. The binding ability of synthesized complexes with CT-DNA and bovine serum albumin (BSA) has been studied by spectroscopic methods and viscosity measurements. The experimental results of absorption titration of cobalt(II) complexes with CT-DNA indicate that the complexes have ability to form adducts and they can stabilize the DNA helix. The cobalt(II) complexes exhibit good binding propensity to BSA protein.

An in situ study of stress evolution and mechanical behavior of germanium as a lithium-ion battery electrode material is presented. Thin films of germanium are cycled in a half-cell configuration with lithium metal foil as counter/reference electrode, with 1M LiPF6 in ethylene carbonate, diethyl carbonate, dimethyl carbonate solution (1:1:1, wt%) as electrolyte. Real-time stress evolution in the germanium thin-film electrodes during electrochemical lithiation/delithiation is measured by monitoring the substrate curvature using the multi-beam optical sensing method. Upon lithiation a-Ge undergoes extensive plastic deformation, with a peak compressive stress reaching as high as -0.76 +/- 0.05 GPa (mean +/- standard deviation). The compressive stress decreases with lithium concentration reaching a value of approximately -0.3 GPa at the end of lithiation. Upon delithiation the stress quickly became tensile and follows a trend that mirrors the behavior on compressive side; the average peak tensile stress of the lithiated Ge samples was approximately 0.83 GPa. The peak tensile stress data along with the SEM analysis was used to estimate a lower bound fracture resistance of lithiated Ge, which is approximately 5.3 J/m(2). It was also observed that the lithiated Ge is rate sensitive, i.e., stress depends on how fast or slow the charging is carried out. (C) The Author(s) 2015. Published by ECS. We demonstrate a non-contact technique to apply calibrated and localized forces in the micro-Newton to milli-Newton range using an air microjet. An electromagnetically actuated diaphragm controlled by a signal generator is used to generate the air microjet. With a nozzle diameter of 150 mu m, the microjet diameter was maintained to a maximum of 1 mm at a distance of 5 mm from the nozzle. The force generated by the microjet was measured using a commercial force sensor to determine the velocity profile of the jet. Axial flow velocities of up to 25 m s(-1) were obtained at distances as long as 6 mm. The microjet exerted a force up to 1 mu N on a poly dimethyl siloxane (PDMS) micropillar (50 mu m in diameter, 157 mu m in height) and 415 mu N on a PDMS membrane (3 mm in diameter, 28 mu m thick). We also demonstrate that from a distance of 6 mm our microjet can exert a peak pressure of 187 Pa with a total force of about 84 mu N on a flat surface with 8 V operating voltage. Out of the cleanroom fabrication and robust design make this system cost effective and durable.

A water soluble third generation poly(alkyl aryl ether) dendrimer was examined for its ability to solubilize hydrophobic polyaromatic molecules in water and facilitate non-radiative resonance energy transfer between them. One to two orders of magnitude higher aqueous solubilities of pyrene (PY), perylene (PE), acridine yellow (AY) and acridine orange (AO) were observed in presence of a defined concentration of the dendrimer. A reduction in the quantum yield of the donor PY* emission and a partial decrease in lifetime of the donor excited state revealed the occurrence of energy transfer from dendrimer solubilized excited PY to ground state PE molecules, both present within a dendrimer. The energy transfer efficiency was estimated to be similar to 61%. A cascade resonance energy transfer in a three component system, PY*-to-PE-to-AY and PY*-to-PE-to-AO, was demonstrated through incorporation of AY or AO in the two component PY-PE system. In the three-component system, excitation of PY resulted in emission from AY or AO via a cascade energy transfer process. Careful choice of dye molecules with good spectral overlap and the employment of dendrimer as the medium enabled us to expand absorption-emission wavelengths, from similar to 330 nm to similar to 600 nm in aqueous solution. We report the development of porous membranes by thermally induced phase separation of a PS/PVME (polystyrene/polyvinylmethyl ether]) blend, which is a typical LCST mixture. The morphology of the membrane after etching out the PVME phase was characterized by scanning electron microscopy. To give the membrane an antibacterial surface, polystyrene (PS) and polyvinyl(methyl ether)]-alt-maleic anhydride (PVME-MAH) with silver nanoparticles (nAg) were electrospun on the membrane surface. Pure water flux was evaluated by using a cross-flow membrane setup. The microgrooved fibers changed the flux across the membrane depending on the surface properties. The antibacterial properties of the membrane were confirmed by the reduction in the colony count of E. coli. The SEM images show the disruption of the bacterial cell membrane and the antibacterial mechanism was discussed.

To improve the spatial distribution of nano particles in a polymeric host and to enhance the interfacial interaction with the host, the use of chain-end grafted nanoparticle has gained popularity in the field of polymeric nanocomposites. Besides changing the material properties of the host, these grafted nanoparticles strongly alter the dynamics of the polymer chain at both local and cooperative length scales (relaxations) by manipulating the enthalpic and entropic interactions. It is difficult to map the distribution of these chain-end grafted nanoparticles in the blend by conventional techniques, and herein, we attempted to characterize it by unique technique(s) like peak force quantitative nanomechanical mapping (PFQNM) through AFM (atomic force microscopy) imaging and dielectric relaxation spectroscopy (DRS). Such techniques, besides shedding light on the spatial distribution of the nanoparticles, also give critical information on the changing elasticity at smaller length scales and hierarchical polymer chain dynamics in the vicinity of the nanoparticles. The effect of one-dimensional rodlike multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs), with the characteristic dimension of the order of the radius of gyration of the polymeric chain, on the phase miscibility and chain dynamics in a classical LCST mixture of polystyrene/ poly(vinyl methyl ether) (PS/PVME) was examined in detail using the above techniques. In order to tune the localization of the nanotubes, different molecular weights of PS (13, 31, and 46 kDa), synthesized using RAFT (reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer) polymerization, was grafted onto MWNTs in situ. The thermodynamic miscibility in the blends was assessed by low-amplitude isochronal temperature sweeps, the spatial distribution of MWNTs in the blends was evaluated by PFQNM, and the hierarchical polymer chain dynamics was studied by DRS. It was observed that the miscibility, concentration fluctuation, and cooperative relaxations of the PS/PVME blends are strongly governed by the spatial distribution of MWNTs in the blends. These findings should help guide theories and simulations of hierarchical chain dynamics in LCST mixtures containing rodlike nanoparticles.

The biodegradation of polycaprolactone (PCL), polylactic acid (PLA), polyglycolide (PGA) and their copolymers, poly (lactide-co-glycolide) and poly (D, L-lactide-co-caprolactone) (PLCL) was investigated. The influence of different solvents on the degradation of these polymers at 37 degrees C in the presence of two different lipases namely Novozym 435 and the free lipase of porcine pancreas was investigated. The rate coefficients for the polymer degradation and enzyme deactivation were determined using continuous distribution kinetics. Among the homopolymers, the degradation of PGA was nearly an order of magnitude lower than that for PCL and PLA. The overall rate coefficients of the copolymers were higher than their respective homopolymers. Thus, PLCL degraded faster than either PCL or PLA. The degradation was highly dependent on the viscosity of the solvent used with the highest degradation observed in acetone. The degradation of the polymers in acetone was nearly twice that observed in dimethyl sulfoxide indicating that the degradation decreases with increase in the solvent viscosity. The degradation of the polymers in water-solvent mixtures indicated an optimal water content of 2.5 wt% of water.

The design and synthesis is reported of 7-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)-4-methylcoumarin (Cz-Cm), comprising a carbazole donor moiety and a 4-methylcoumarin acceptor unit, for use in a blue organic light-emitting diode. A detailed solid state, theoretical and spectroscopic study was performed to understand the structure-property relationships. The material exhibits deep-blue emission and high photoluminescence quantum yield both in solution and in a doped matrix. A deep-blue electroluminescence emission at 430nm, a maximum brightness of 292cdm(-2) and an external quantum efficiency of 0.4% was achieved with a device configured as follows: ITO/NPD (30nm)/TCTA (20nm)/CzSi(10nm)/10wt% Cz-Cm:DPEPO (10nm)/TPBI (30nm)/LiF (1nm)/Al ITO=indium tin oxide, NPD=N,N-di(1-naphthyl)-N,N-diphenyl-(1,1-biphenyl)-4,4-diamine, TCTA=tris(4-carbazoyl-9-ylphenyl)amine, CzSi=9-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-3,6-bis(triphenylsilyl)-9H-carbazole, DPEPO=bis2-(diphenylphosphino)phenyl]ether oxide, TPBI=1,3,5-tris(N-phenylbenzimidazol-2-yl)benzene].
