Zero padded systems with linear receivers are shown to be robust and amenable to fast implementations in single antenna scenarios. In this paper, properties of such systems are investigated when multiple antennas are present at both ends of the communication link. In particular, their diversity and complexity are evaluated for precoded transmissions. The linear receivers are shown to exploit multipath and receive diversities, even in the absence of any coding at the transmitter. Use of additional redundancy to improve performance is considered and the effect of transmission rate on diversity order is analyzed. Low complexity implementations of Zero Forcing receivers are devised to further enhance their applicability.

In this paper, we consider a robust design of MIMO-relay precoder and receive filter for the destination nodes in a non-regenerative multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay network. The network consists of multiple source-destination node pairs assisted by a single MIMO-relay node. The source and destination nodes are single antenna nodes, whereas the MIMO-relay node has multiple transmit and multiple receive antennas. The channel state information (CSI) available at the MIMO-relay node for precoding purpose is assumed to be imperfect. We assume that the norms of errors in CSI are upper-bounded, and the MIMO-relay node knows these bounds. We consider the robust design of the MIMO-relay precoder and receive filter based on the minimization of the total MIMO-relay transmit power with constraints on the mean square error (MSE) at the destination nodes. We show that this design problem can be solved by solving an alternating sequence of minimization and worst-case analysis problems. The minimization problem is formulated as a convex optimization problem that can be solved efficiently using interior-point methods. The worst-case analysis problem can be solved analytically using an approximation for the MSEs at the destination nodes. We demonstrate the robust performance of the proposed design through simulations.

Microstrip patch antennas are strong candidates for use in many wireless communications applications. This paper proposes the use of a patch antenna with two U-shaped slots to achieve dual band operation. A thick substrate helps broaden the individual bandwidths. The antenna is designed based on extensive IE3D simulation studies. A prototype antenna is fabricated and experimentally verified for the required performance.

Receive antenna selection (AS) provides many benefits of multiple-antenna systems at drastically reduced hardware costs. In it, the receiver connects a dynamically selected subset of N available antennas to the L available RF chains. Due to the nature of AS, the channel estimates at different antennas, which are required to determine the best subset for data reception, are obtained from different transmissions of the pilot sequence. Consequently, they are outdated by different amounts in a time-varying channel. We show that a linear weighting of the estimates is necessary and optimum for the subset selection process, where the weights are related to the temporal correlation of the channel variations. When L is not an integer divisor of N , we highlight a new issue of ``training voids'', in which the last pilot transmission is not fully exploited by the receiver. We then present new ``void-filling'' methods that exploit these voids and greatly improve the performance of AS. The optimal subset selection rules with void-filling, in which different antennas turn out to have different numbers of estimates, are also explicitly characterized. Closed-form equations for the symbol error probability with and without void-filling are also developed.

We drive a d-dimensional Heisenberg magnet using an anisotropic current. The continuum Langevin equation is analysed using a dynamical renormalization group and numerical simulations. We discover a rich steady-state phase diagram, including a critical point in a new nonequilibrium universality class, and a spatiotemporally chaotic phase. The latter may be controlled in a robust manner to target spatially periodic steady states with helical order.

9-Anthryl and 1-pyrenyl terpyridines (1 and 2, respectively), key precursors for the design of novel fluorescent sensors have been synthesized and characterized by H-1 NMR, mass spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. Twisted molecular conformations for each 1 and 2 were observed in their single crystal structures. Energy minimization calculations for the 1 and 2 using the semi-empirical AM1 method show that the 'twisted' conformation is intrinsic to these systems. We observe interconnected networks of edge-to-face CH...pi interactions, which appear to be cooperative in nature, in each of the crystal structures. The two twisted molecules, although having differently shaped polyaromatic hydrocarbon substituents, show similar patterns of edge-to-face CH...pi interactions. The presently described systems comprise of two aromatic surfaces that are almost orthogonal to each other. This twisted or orthogonal nature of the molecules leads to the formation of interesting multi-directional ladder like supramolecular organizations. A combination of edge-to-face and face-to-face packing modes helps to stabilize these motifs. The ladder like architecture in 1 is helical in nature. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

An external pipe-crawling device presented in this paper aids the inspection of pipes in hazardous environments and areas inaccessible to humans. The principal component of our design, which uses inchworm type motion, is a compliant ring mechanism actuated using shape memory alloy (SMA) wire. It was fabricated and tested and was reported in our earlier work. But this device had a drawback of low crawling speed (about 1 mm/min) owing to the delay in heating and cooling of the SMA strips in the linear actuation. Additionally, that design also had the difficulties of mounting on pipes with closed ends, large radial span, and the need for housing for electrical insulation and guiding of the SMA wire. In this paper we present a compact design that overcomes the difficulties of the earlier design. In particular, we present a compact compliant mechanism with two halves so as to enable mounting and un-mounting on any closed or open pipe. Another feature is the presence of insulation and guiding of the SMA wire without housing. This design results in a reduction of the radial span of the ring from 22 mm to 12 mm, and the stiffness of the mechanism and the SMA wire are matched. An SMA helical spring is to used in the place of an SMA strip to increase the crawling speed of the device. A microcontroller-based circuitry is also fitted to cyclically.activate the SMA wires and springs.

The IEEE 802.16/WiMAX standard has fully embraced multi-antenna technology and can, thus, deliver robust and high transmission rates and higher system capacity. Nevertheless, due to its inherent form-factor constraints and cost concerns, a WiMAX mobile station (MS) should preferably contain fewer radio frequency (RF) chains than antenna elements. This is because RF chains are often substantially more expensive than antenna elements. Thus, antenna selection, wherein a subset of antennas is dynamically selected to connect to the limited RF chains for transceiving, is a highly appealing performance enhancement technique for multi-antenna WiMAX terminals. In this paper, a novel antenna selection protocol tailored for next-generation IEEE 802.16 mobile stations is proposed. As demonstrated by the extensive OPNET simulations, the proposed protocol delivers a significant performance improvement over conventional 802.16 terminals that lack the antenna selection capability. Moreover, the new protocol leverages the existing signaling methods defined in 802.16, thereby incurring a negligible signaling overhead and requiring only diminutive modifications of the standard. To the best of our knowledge, this paper represents the first effort to support antenna selection capability in IEEE 802.16 mobile stations.

Ballast fouling is created by the breakdown of aggregates or outside contamination by coal dust from coal trains, or from soil intrusion beneath rail track. Due to ballast fouling, the conditions of rail track can be deteriorated considerably depending on the type of fouling material and the degree of fouling. So far there is no comprehensive guideline available to identify the critical degree of fouling for different types of fouling materials. This paper presents the identification of degree of fouling and types of fouling using non-destructive testing, namely seismic surface-wave and ground penetrating radar (GPR) survey. To understand this, a model rail track with different degree of fouling has been constructed in Civil engineering laboratory, University of Wollongong, Australia. Shear wave velocity obtained from seismic survey has been employed to identify the degree of fouling and types of fouling material. It is found that shear wave velocity of fouled ballast increases initially, reaches optimum fouling point (OFP), and decreases when the fouling increases. The degree of fouling corresponding after which the shear wave velocity of fouled ballast will be smaller than that of clean ballast is called the critical fouling point (CFP). Ground penetrating radar with four different ground coupled antennas (500 MHz, 800 MHz, 1.6 GHz and 2.3 GHz) was also used to identify the ballast fouling condition. It is found that the 800 MHz ground coupled antenna gives a better signal in assessing the ballast fouling condition. Seismic survey is relatively slow when compared to GPR survey however it gives quantifiable results. In contrast, GPR survey is faster and better in estimating the depth of fouling. Non-linear precoding for the downlink of a multiuser MISO (multiple-input single-output) communication system in the presence of imperfect channel state information (CSI) is considered. The base station is equipped with multiple transmit antennas and each user terminal is equipped with a single receive antenna. The CSI at the transmitter is assumed to be perturbed by an estimation error. We propose a robust minimum mean square error (MMSE) Tomlinson-Harashima precoder (THP)design, which can be formulated as an optimization problem that can be solved efficiently by the method of alternating optimization(AO). In this method of optimization, the entire set of optimization variables is partitioned into non-overlapping subsets, and an iterative sequence of optimizations on these subsets is carried out, which is often simpler compared to simultaneous optimization over all variables. In our problem, the application of the AO method results in a second-order cone program which can be numerically solved efficiently. The proposed precoder is shown to be less sensitive to imperfect channel knowledge. Simulation results illustrate the improvement in performance compared to other robust linear and non-linear precoders in the literature.

Distributed space time coding for wireless relay networks where the source, the destination and the relays have multiple antennas have been studied by Jing and Hassibi. In this set up, the transmit and the receive signals at different antennas of the same relay are processed and designed independently, even though the antennas are colocated. In this paper, a wireless relay network with single antenna at the source and the destination and two antennas at each of the R relays is considered. In the first phase of the two-phase transmission model, a T -length complex vector is transmitted from the source to all the relays. At each relay, the inphase and quadrature component vectors of the received complex vectors at the two antennas are interleaved before processing them. After processing, in the second phase, a T x 2R matrix codeword is transmitted to the destination. The collection of all such codewords is called Co-ordinate interleaved distributed space-time code (CIDSTC). Compared to the scheme proposed by Jing-Hassibi, for T ges AR, it is shown that while both the schemes give the same asymptotic diversity gain, the CIDSTC scheme gives additional asymptotic coding gain as well and that too at the cost of negligible increase in the processing complexity at the relays.

In this paper, we address the reconstruction problem from laterally truncated helical cone-beam projections. The reconstruction problem from lateral truncation, though similar to that of interior radon problem, is slightly different from it as well as the local (lambda) tomography and pseudo-local tomography in the sense that we aim to reconstruct the entire object being scanned from a region-of-interest (ROI) scan data. The method proposed in this paper is a projection data completion approach followed by the use of any standard accurate FBP type reconstruction algorithm. In particular, we explore a windowed linear prediction (WLP) approach for data completion and compare the quality of reconstruction with the linear prediction (LP) technique proposed earlier.
