As an alternative to the gold standard TiO2 photocatalyst, the use of zinc oxide (ZnO) as a robust candidate for wastewater treatment is widespread due to its similarity in charge carrier dynamics upon bandgap excitation and the generation of reactive oxygen species in aqueous suspensions with TiO2. However, the large bandgap of ZnO, the massive charge carrier recombination, and the photoinduced corrosion-dissolution at extreme pH conditions, together with the formation of inert Zn(OH)(2) during photocatalytic reactions act as barriers for its extensive applicability. To this end, research has been intensified to improve the performance of ZnO by tailoring its surface-bulk structure and by altering its photogenerated charge transfer pathways with an intention to inhibit the surface-bulk charge carrier recombination. For the first time, the several strategies, such as tailoring the intrinsic defects, surface modification with organic compounds, doping with foreign ions, noble metal deposition, heterostructuring with other semiconductors and modification with carbon nanostructures, which have been successfully employed to improve the photoactivity and stability of ZnO are critically reviewed. Such modifications enhance the charge separation and facilitate the generation of reactive oxygenated free radicals, and also the interaction with the pollutant molecules. The synthetic route to obtain hierarchical nanostructured morphologies and study their impact on the photocatalytic performance is explained by considering the morphological influence and the defect-rich chemistry of ZnO. Finally, the crystal facet engineering of polar and non-polar facets and their relevance in photocatalysis is outlined. It is with this intention that the present review directs the further design, tailoring and tuning of the physico-chemical and optoelectronic properties of ZnO for better applications, ranging from photocatalysis to photovoltaics.

Temperature dependent current-voltage (I-V) measurements of electrochemically prepared zinc oxide nanowire/polypyrrole (ZnONW/PPy) nanocomposite yielded non-linear I-V characteristics at temperatures between 300 and 4.5 K. The low-field conductance (G) of the ZnONW/PPy film exhibits pronounced temperature dependence with room temperature conductance (G(300K)) similar to 10(-3) S and a conductance ratio (G(300)K/G(4.5K)) of similar to 10(4), indicating dominance of significant temperature dependent charge transport processes. The conduction mechanism of the film is satisfactorily understood by extended fluctuation induced tunneling (FIT) model as the non-linear I-V characteristics fit fairly well to the extended FIT model. Further, the temperature dependence of G(o) obtained from fitting followed Sheng's model also. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

Current organic semiconductors for organic photovoltaics (OPV) have relative dielectric constants (relative permittivities, epsilon(r)) in the range of 2-4. As a consequence, Coulombically bound electron-hole pairs (excitons) are produced upon absorption of light, giving rise to limited power conversion efficiencies. We introduce a strategy to enhance epsilon(r) of well-known donors and acceptors without breaking conjugation, degrading charge carrier mobility or altering the transport gap. The ability of ethylene glycol (EG) repeating units to rapidly reorient their dipoles with the charge redistributions in the environment was proven via density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Fullerene derivatives functionalized with triethylene glycol side chains were studied for the enhancement of epsilon(r) together with poly(p-phenylene vinylene) and diketo-pyrrolopyrrole based polymers functionalized with similar side chains. The polymers showed a doubling of epsilon(r) with respect to their reference polymers in identical backbone. Fullerene derivatives presented enhancements up to 6 compared with phenyl-C-61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) as the reference. Importantly, the applied modifications did not affect the mobility of electrons and holes and provided excellent solubility in common organic solvents.

Power conversion efficiency of a solar cell is a complex parameter which usually hides the molecular details of the charge generation process. For rationally tailoring the overall device efficiency of the dye-sensitized solar cell, detailed molecular understanding of photoinduced reactions at the dye-TiO2 interface has to be achieved. Recently, near-IR absorbing diketopyrrolopyrrole-based (DPP) low bandgap polymeric dyes with enhanced photostabilities have been used for TiO2 sensitization with moderate efficiencies. To improve the reported device performances, a critical analysis of the polymerTiO(2) interaction and electron transfer dynamics is imperative. Employing a combination of time-resolved optical measurements complemented by low temperature EPR and steady-state Raman spectroscopy on polymerTiO(2) conjugates, we provide direct evidence for photoinduced electron injection from the TDPP-BBT polymer singlet state into TiO2 through the C-O group of the DPP-core. A detailed excited state description of the electron transfer process in films reveals instrument response function (IRF) limited (<110 fs) charge injection from a minor polymer fraction followed by a picosecond recombination. The major fraction of photoexcited polymers, however, does not show injection indicating pronounced ground state heterogeneity induced due to nonspecific polymerTiO(2) interactions. Our work therefore underscores the importance of gathering molecular-level insight into the competitive pathways of ultrafast charge generation along with probing the chemical heterogeneity at the nanoscale within the polymerTiO2 films for optimizing photovoltaic device efficiencies.

We present here observations on diurnal and seasonal variation of mixing ratio and delta C-13 of air CO2, from an urban station-Bangalore (BLR), India, monitored between October 2008 and December 2011. On a diurnal scale, higher mixing ratio with depleted delta C-13 of air CO2 was found for the samples collected during early morning compared to the samples collected during late afternoon. On a seasonal scale, mixing ratio was found to be higher for dry summer months (April-May) and lower for southwest monsoon months (June-July). The maximum enrichment in delta C-13 of air CO2 (-8.04 +/- 0.02aEuro degrees) was seen in October, then delta C-13 started depleting and maximum depletion (-9.31 +/- 0.07aEuro degrees) was observed during dry summer months. Immediately after that an increasing trend in delta C-13 was monitored coincidental with the advancement of southwest monsoon months and maximum enrichment was seen again in October. Although a similar pattern in seasonal variation was observed for the three consecutive years, the dry summer months of 2011 captured distinctly lower amplitude in both the mixing ratio and delta C-13 of air CO2 compared to the dry summer months of 2009 and 2010. This was explained with reduced biomass burning and increased productivity associated with prominent La Nina condition. While compared with the observations from the nearest coastal and open ocean stations-Cabo de Rama (CRI) and Seychelles (SEY), BLR being located within an urban region captured higher amplitude of seasonal variation. The average delta C-13 value of the end member source CO2 was identified based on both diurnal and seasonal scale variation. The delta C-13 value of source CO2 (-24.9 +/- 3aEuro degrees) determined based on diurnal variation was found to differ drastically from the source value (-14.6 +/- 0.7aEuro degrees) identified based on seasonal scale variation. The source CO2 identified based on diurnal variation incorporated both early morning and late afternoon sample; whereas, the source CO2 identified based on seasonal variation included only afternoon samples. Thus, it is evident from the study that sampling timing is one of the important factors while characterizing the composition of end member source CO2 for a particular station. The difference in delta C-13 value of source CO2 obtained based on both diurnal and seasonal variation might be due to possible contribution from cement industry along with fossil fuel / biomass burning as predominant sources for the station along with differential meteorological conditions prevailed.

We investigated the site response characteristics of Kachchh rift basin over the meizoseismal area of the 2001, Mw 7.6, Bhuj (NW India) earthquake using the spectral ratio of the horizontal and vertical components of ambient vibrations. Using the available knowledge on the regional geology of Kachchh and well documented ground responses from the earthquake, we evaluated the H/V curves pattern across sediment filled valleys and uplifted areas generally characterized by weathered sandstones. Although our HIV curves showed a largely fuzzy nature, we found that the hierarchical clustering method was useful for comparing large numbers of response curves and identifying the areas with similar responses. Broad and plateau shaped peaks of a cluster of curves within the valley region suggests the possibility of basin effects within valley. Fundamental resonance frequencies (f(0)) are found in the narrow range of 0.1-2.3 Hz and their spatial distribution demarcated the uplifted regions from the valleys. In contrary, low HIV peak amplitudes (A(0) = 2-4) were observed on the uplifted areas and varying values (2-9) were found within valleys. Compared to the amplification factors, the liquefaction indices (kg) were able to effectively indicate the areas which experienced severe liquefaction. The amplification ranges obtained in the current study were found to be comparable to those obtained from earthquake data for a limited number of seismic stations located on uplifted areas; however the values on the valley region may not reflect their true amplification potential due to basin effects. Our study highlights the practical usefulness as well as limitations of the HIV method to study complex geological settings as Kachchh. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Cast Mg/SiCp and AZ91/SiCp composites were successfully hot extruded vis-a-vis cast and unreinforced Mg and AZ91 alloy up to low (R=15:1) and high (R=54:1) extrusion ratios at 350 degrees C. Significant matrix grain refinement was noticed after extrusion due to dynamic recrystallization; the degree of refinement being relatively higher for the two composites. The AZ91 based materials (AZ91 and AZ91/SiCp) exhibited comparatively finer grain size both in cast condition and after extrusion due to strong pinning effect from alloying elements as well as Mg17Al12 intermetallic phase. Compositional analyses eliminated the possibility of any interfacial reaction between matrix (Mg/AZ91) and second phase reinforcement (SiCp) in case of the composites. Texture evolution shows the formation of < 10 (1) over bar0 >parallel to ED texture fibre for all the materials after extrusion irrespective of SiCp addition or alloying which is primarily due to the deformation of the matrix phase. Micro-hardness did not significantly increased on extrusion in comparison to the respective cast materials for both composites and unreinforced alloys. Dynamic mechanical analysis, however, confirmed that the damping properties were affected by the extrusion ratio and to a lesser extent, due to the presence of second phase at room temperature as well as at higher temperature (300 degrees C). Monoclinic nanocuboid WO3 enhanced the photocatalyst efficiency of quasi nanobelt zinc oxide for dye degradation in the presence of visible light radiation. Combustion synthesized ZnO resulted in a belt-like morphology through in situ cluster formation of near spherical particles but homogenously disperses and strongly adheres to nanocuboid WO3 during physical mixing. Cationic methylene blue (MB) and anionic orange G (OG) undergo degradation through a charge transfer mechanism in the presence of WO3-ZnO (1 : 9 weight percentage ratio) mixture. The photocatalytic reaction was enhanced due to the reduction in the recombination of photogenerated electron-holes. The high degree of 90% degradation of both dyes is due to the activity of the mixed oxides, which is much higher than that obtained either with WO3 or ZnO individually.

A dilution cum purge ejector for application in fuel cells represents a domain of ejector operation involving low entrainment ratio with differing secondary and primary gas; which is hardly investigated and a cohesive design framework is not readily available. We comprehensively study a constant area ejector using analytical, experimental and numerical tools at low entrainment ratio (0.004-0.065) with Air, Helium and Argon as secondary gas while the primary gas is Air. For the first time, limits of operating parameters used in control volume method to design the ejector are found to be highly dependent on the secondary molecular weight. The entrainment ratio in the ejector (low for Helium and high for Argon) is affected by the molecular weight and the static pressure within the ejector (low for Air and high for Argon & Helium) by the gamma of the secondary gas. Sufficient suction pressure (0.3-0.55 bar) is generated by the ejector thereby preventing any backflow of secondary gas at all primary stagnation pressures (1.5, 2.2 and 3.1 bar). Numerical results agree well with experimental results. The ejector is shown to completely dilute and purge the secondary flow, meeting all key design requirements. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. A charge transfer (CT) mediated two-component, multistimuli responsive supergelation involving a L-histidine-appended pyrenyl derivative (PyHisOMe) as a donor and an asymmetric bolaamphiphilic naphthalene-diimide (Asym-NDI) derivative as an acceptor in a 2: 1 mixture of H2O/MeOH was investigated. Asym-NDI alone self-assembled into pH-responsive vesicular nanostructures in water. Excellent selectivity in CT gel formation was achieved in terms of choosing amino acid appended pyrenyl donor scaffolds. Circular di-chroism and morphological studies suggested formation of chiral, interconnected vesicular assemblies resembling ``pearls-on-a-string'' from these CT mixed stacks. XRD studies revealed the formation of monolayer lipid membranes from these CT mixed stacks that eventually led to the formation of individual vesicles. Strong cohesive forces among the interconnected vesicles originate from the protrusion of the oxyethylene chains from the surfaces of the chiral vesicles.

Herein, we report a facile and effective method to enhance the photocatalytic activity of bismuth oxybromide (BiOBr) semiconductor through the fabrication of heterojunction with Ag3PO4. The as synthesized Ag3PO4/BiOBr microspheres were characterized with transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). The new Ag3PO4/BiOBr heterojunctions exhibited wide absorption in the visible-light region and compared to pure BiOBr and Ag3PO4 samples displayed exceptionally high photocatalytic activity for the degradation of typical organic pollutants such as Rhodamine B (RhB) and phenol. The optimal Ag/Bi weight ratio in Ag3PO4/BiOBr microsphere (AB7) was found to be 0.7. The enhanced photocatalytic activity was related to the efficient separation of electron-hole pairs derived from matching band potentials between BiOBr and Ag3PO4 which results into the generation of natural energy bias at heterojunction and subsequent transfer of photoinduced charge carriers. Moreover, the synthesized samples exhibited almost no loss of activity even after 6 recycling runs indicating their high photocatalytic stability. Considering the facile and environment friendly route for the synthesis of Ag3PO4/BiOBr hybrids with enhanced visible-light induced photocatalytic activity, it is possible to widely apply these hybrids in various fields such as waste water treatment. In this paper, using the Gauge/gravity duality techniques, we explore the hydrodynamic regime of a very special class of strongly coupled QFTs that come up with an emerging UV length scale in the presence of a negative hyperscaling violating exponent. The dual gravitational counterpart for these QFTs consists of scalar dressed black brane solutions of exactly integrable Einstein-scalar gravity model with Domain Wall (DW) asymptotics. In the first part of our analysis we compute the R-charge diffusion for the boundary theory and find that (unlike the case for the pure AdS (4) black branes) it scales quite non trivially with the temperature. In the second part of our analysis, we compute the eta/s ratio both in the non extremal as well as in the extremal limit of these special class of gauge theories and it turns out to be equal to 1/4 pi in both the cases. These results therefore suggest that the quantum critical systems in the presence of (negative) hyperscaling violation at UV, might fall under a separate universality class as compared to those conventional quantum critical systems with the usual AdS (4) duals.

Intramolecular S center dot center dot center dot O chalcogen bonding and its potential to lock molecular conformation have been examined in the crystal forms of sulfamethizole, a sulfonamide antibiotic. Molecular complexes of sulfamethizole, including salts and cocrystal, have been synthesized, and their crystal structures were analyzed in order to examine the possible conformational preferences of the molecule in various ionic states and supramolecular environments (neutral/cocrystal, anionic salt, and cationic salt forms). The electrostatic potential mapped on Hirshfeld surfaces generated for these crystal forms provides insights into the possible binding modes of the drug in different environments. Further, the observed conformation locking feature has been rationalized in terms of the experimental charge density features of the intramolecular S center dot center dot O chalcogen bonding in sulfamethizole. The study quantitatively illustrates and rationalizes an intriguing case of a local minimum of molecular conformation being exclusively preferred over the global minimum, as it facilitates more efficient intermolecular interactions in a supramolecular environment.
