This paper aims at extending the universal erosive burning law developed by two of the present authors from axi-symmetric internally burning grains to partly symmetric burning grains. This extension revolves around three dimensional flow calculations inside highly loaded grain geometry and benefiting from an observation that the flow gradients normal to the surface in such geometries have a smooth behavior along the perimeter of the grain. These are used to help identify the diameter that gives the same perimeter the characteristic dimension rather than a mean hydraulic diameter chosen earlier. The predictions of highly loaded grains from the newly chosen dimension in the erosive burning law show better comparison with measured pressure-time curves while those with mean hydraulic diameter definitely over-predict the pressures. Research has been undertaken to ascertain the predictability of non-stationary time series using wavelet and Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) based time series models. Methods have been developed in the past to decompose a time series into components. Forecasting of these components combined with random component could yield predictions. Using this ideology, wavelet and EMD analyses have been incorporated separately which decomposes a time series into independent orthogonal components with both time and frequency localizations. The component series are fit with specific auto-regressive models to obtain forecasts which are later combined to obtain the actual predictions. Four non-stationary streamflow sites (USGS data resources) of monthly total volumes and two non-stationary gridded rainfall sites (IMD) of monthly total rainfall are considered for the study. The predictability is checked for six and twelve months ahead forecasts across both the methodologies. Based on performance measures, it is observed that wavelet based method has better prediction capabilities over EMD based method despite some of the limitations of time series methods and the manner in which decomposition takes place. Finally, the study concludes that the wavelet based time series algorithm can be used to model events such as droughts with reasonable accuracy. Also, some modifications that can be made in the model have been discussed that could extend the scope of applicability to other areas in the field of hydrology. (C) 2013 Elesvier B.V. In the present work, the thermal efficiency of a conventional domestic burner is studied both experimentally and numerically for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and piped natural gas (PNG) fuels. Three-dimensional computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modeling of the steady-state flow, combustion and heat transfer to the vessel is reported for the first time in such burners. Based on the insights from the CFD model concerning the flow and heat transfer, design modifications in the form of a circular insert and a radiant sheet are proposed which are observed to increase thermal efficiency for LPG. For PNG, predictions showed that loading height was a much more important factor affecting efficiency than these design modifications and an optimal loading height could be identified. Experiments confirm these trends by showing an improvement in burner thermal efficiency of 2.5% for LPG with the modified design, and 10% for PNG with the optimal loading height, demonstrating that the CFD modeling approach developed in the present work is a useful tool to study domestic burners. We report on the development of a system of micron-sized reciprocal swimmers that can be powered with small homogeneous magnetic fields, and whose motion resembles that of a helical flagellum moving back and forth. We have measured the diffusivities of the swimmers to be higher compared to nonactuated objects of identical dimensions at long time scales, in accordance with the theoretical predictions made by Lauga Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 178101 (2011)]. Randomness in the reciprocity of the actuation strokes was found to have a strong influence on the enhancement of the diffusivity, which has been investigated with numerical calculations.

Pore-forming toxins are known for their ability to efficiently form transmembrane pores which eventually leads to cell lysis. The dynamics of lysis and underlying self-assembly or oligomerization pathways leading to pore formation are incompletely understood. In this manuscript the pore-forming kinetics and lysis dynamics of Cytolysin-A (ClyA) toxins on red blood cells (RBCs) are quantified and compared with experimental lysis data. Lysis experiments are carried out on a fixed mass of RBCs, under isotonic conditions in phosphate-buffered saline, for different initial toxin concentrations ranging from 2.94-14.7 nM. Kinetic models which account for monomer binding, conformation and oligomerization to form the dodecameric ClyA pore complex are developed and lysis is assumed to occur when the number of pores per RBC (n(p)) exceeds a critical number, n(pc). By analysing the model in a sublytic regime (n(p) < n(pc)) the number of pores per RBC to initiate lysis is found to lie between 392 and 768 for the sequential oligomerization mechanism and between 5300 and 6300 for the non-sequential mechanism. Rupture rates which are first order in the number of RBCs are seen to provide the best agreement with the lysis experiments. The time constants for pore formation are estimated to lie between 1 and 20 s and monomer conformation time scales were found to be 2-4 times greater than the oligomerization times. Cell rupture takes places in 100s of seconds, and occurs predominantly with a steady number of pores ranging from 515 to 11 000 on the RBC surface for the sequential mechanism. Both the sequential irreversible and non-sequential kinetics provide similar predictions of the hemoglobin release dynamics, however the hemoglobin released as a function of the toxin concentration was accurately captured only with the sequential model. Each mechanism develops a distinct distribution of mers on the surface, providing a unique experimentally observable fingerprint to identify the underlying oligomerization pathways. Our study offers a method to quantify the extent and dynamics of lysis which is an important aspect of developing novel drug and gene delivery strategies based on pore-forming toxins.

We extend our analysis of transverse single spin asymmetry in electroproduction of J/ψ to include the effect of the scale evolution of the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions and gluon Sivers function. We estimate single spin asymmetry for JLab, HERMES, COMPASS, and eRHIC energies using the color evaporation model of charmonium production, using an analytically obtained approximate solution of TMD evolution equations discussed in the literature. We find that there is a reduction in the asymmetry compared with our predictions for the earlier case considered by us, wherein the Q2 dependence came only from DGLAP evolution of the unpolarized gluon densities and a different parametrization of the TMD Sivers function was used.

The high concentration of the world's species in tropical forests endows these systems with particular importance for retaining global biodiversity, yet it also presents significant challenges for ecology and conservation science. The vast number of rare and yet to be discovered species restricts the applicability of species-level modelling for tropical forests, while the capacity of community classification approaches to identify priorities for conservation and management is also limited. Here we assessed the degree to which macroecological modelling can overcome shortfalls in our knowledge of biodiversity in tropical forests and help identify priority areas for their conservation and management. We used 527 plant community survey plots in the Australian Wet Tropics to generate models and predictions of species richness, compositional dissimilarity, and community composition for all the 4,313 vascular plant species recorded across the region (>1.3 million communities (grid cells)). We then applied these predictions to identify areas of tropical forest likely to contain the greatest concentration of species, rare species, endemic species and primitive angiosperm families. Synthesising these alternative attributes of diversity into a single index of conservation value, we identified two areas within the Australian wet tropics that should be a high priority for future conservation actions: the Atherton Tablelands and Daintree rainforest. Our findings demonstrate the value of macroecological modelling in identifying priority areas for conservation and management actions within highly diverse systems, such as tropical forests.

The problem of multiple site damage in aged airplane fuselage is handled in this paper. The analytical and numerical procedures used for the estimation of the strength of a flat panel with such multi-site damage are presented. Further, numerical results are presented on the residual strength of the panel using fracture mechanics-based approach and the stress levels when the leading crack is likely to link up with multiple site damage cracks. The presence of multiple site damage cracks in the vicinity of leading crack significantly decreases the residual strength of the panel. The model is verified using experimental data from the open literature and the predictions are in good agreement with the measured residual strength.

The two-pion contribution from low energies to the muon magnetic moment anomaly, although small, has a large relative uncertainty since in this region the experimental data on the cross sections are neither sufficient nor precise enough. It is therefore of interest to see whether the precision can be improved by means of additional theoretical information on the pion electromagnetic form factor, which controls the leading-order contribution. In the present paper, we address this problem by exploiting analyticity and unitarity of the form factor in a parametrization-free approach that uses the phase in the elastic region, known with high precision from the Fermi-Watson theorem and Roy equations for pi pi elastic scattering as input. The formalism also includes experimental measurements on the modulus in the region 0.65-0.70 GeV, taken from the most recent e(+)e(-) ->pi(+)pi(-) experiments, and recent measurements of the form factor on the spacelike axis. By combining the results obtained with inputs from CMD2, SND, BABAR, and KLOE, we make the predictions a(mu)(pi pi,LO)2m(pi), 0.30 GeV] = (0.553 +/- 0.004) x 10(-10) and a(mu)(pi pi,LO)0.30 GeV; 0.63 GeV] = (133.083 +/- 0.837) x 10(-10). These are consistent with the other recent determinations and have slightly smaller errors.

Using a recently developed strong-coupling method, we present a comprehensive theory for doublon production processes in modulation spectroscopy of a three-dimensional system of ultracold fermionic atoms in an optical lattice with a trap. The theoretical predictions compare well to the experimental time traces of doublon production. For experimentally feasible conditions, we provide a quantitative prediction for the presence of a nonlinear ``two-photon'' excitation at strong modulation amplitudes.

Chiral metamaterials can have diverse technological applications, such as engineering strongly twisted local electromagnetic fields for sensitive detection of chiral molecules, negative indices of refraction, broadband circular polarization devices, and many more. These are commonly achieved by arranging a group of noble-metal nanoparticles in a chiral geometry, which, for example, can be a helix, whose chiroptical response originates in the dynamic electromagnetic interactions between the localized plasmon modes of the individual nanoparticles. A key question relevant to the chiroptical response of such materials is the role of plasmon interactions as the constituent particles are brought closer, which is investigated in this paper through theoretical and experimental studies. The results of our theoretical analysis, when the particles are brought in close proximity are dramatic, showing a large red shift and enhancement of the spectral width and a near-exponential rise in the strength of the chiroptical response. These predictions were further confirmed with experimental studies of gold and silver nanoparticles arranged on a helical template, where the role of particle separation could be investigated in a systematic manner. The ``optical chirality'' of the electromagnetic fields in the vicinity of the nanoparticles was estimated to be orders of magnitude larger than what could be achieved in all other nanoplasmonic geometries considered so far, implying the suitability of the experimental system for sensitive detection of chiral molecules.

A transient 2D axi-symmetric and lumped parameter (LP) model with constant outflow conditions have been developed to study the discharge capacity of an activated carbon bed. The predicted discharge times and variations in bed pressure and temperature are in good agreement with experimental results obtained from a 1.82 l adsorbed natural gas (ANG) storage system. Under ambient air conditions, a maximum temperature drop of 29.5 K and 45.5 K are predicted at the bed center for discharge rates of 1.0 l min(-1) and 5.0 l min(-1) respectively. The corresponding discharge efficiencies are 77% and 71.5% respectively with discharge efficiencies improving with decreasing outflow rates. Increasing the LID ratio from 1.9 to 7.8 had only a marginal increase in the discharge efficiency. Forced convection (exhaust gas) heating had a significant effect on the discharge efficiency, leading to efficiencies as high as 92.8% at a discharge of 1.0 l min(-1) and 88.7% at 5 l min(-1). Our study shows that the LP model can be reliably used to obtain discharge times due to the uniform pressure distributions in the bed. Temperature predictions with the LP model were more accurate at ambient conditions and higher discharge rates, due to greater uniformity in bed temperatures. For the low thermal conductivity carbon porous beds, our study shows that exhaust gas heating can be used as an effective and convenient strategy to improve the discharge characteristics and performance of an ANG system. The flowfields associated with truncated annular plug nozzles of varying lengths are studied both experimentally and using computational tools. The nozzles are designed to observe wake structure transition for the range of pressure ratios considered. A classification of the open wake regime is proposed for comparing and analyzing the plug flowfields. The three-dimensional relief experienced by the annular plug flow leads to greater wave interactions on the plug surface as compared with linear plug flow, resulting in a delayed transition of the base wake. The Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes based solvers employed in the studies could predict the plug surface flow accurately, whereas they exhibited limitations with regard to plug base flow predictions. Based on the experimental data generated, an empirical model for predicting closed wake base pressure is proposed and compared with other models available in literature.

Background: The number of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) has increased rapidly in the past couple of years, resulting in the identification of genes associated with different diseases. The next step in translating these findings into biomedically useful information is to find out the mechanism of the action of these genes. However, GWAS studies often implicate genes whose functions are currently unknown; for example, MYEOV, ANKLE1, TMEM45B and ORAOV1 are found to be associated with breast cancer, but their molecular function is unknown. Results: We carried out Bayesian inference of Gene Ontology (GO) term annotations of genes by employing the directed acyclic graph structure of GO and the network of protein-protein interactions (PPIs). The approach is designed based on the fact that two proteins that interact biophysically would be in physical proximity of each other, would possess complementary molecular function, and play role in related biological processes. Predicted GO terms were ranked according to their relative association scores and the approach was evaluated quantitatively by plotting the precision versus recall values and F-scores (the harmonic mean of precision and recall) versus varying thresholds. Precisions of similar to 58% and similar to 40% for localization and functions respectively of proteins were determined at a threshold of similar to 30 (top 30 GO terms in the ranked list). Comparison with function prediction based on semantic similarity among nodes in an ontology and incorporation of those similarities in a k nearest neighbor classifier confirmed that our results compared favorably. Conclusions: This approach was applied to predict the cellular component and molecular function GO terms of all human proteins that have interacting partners possessing at least one known GO annotation. The list of predictions is available at http://severus.dbmi.pitt.edu/engo/GOPRED.html. We present the algorithm, evaluations and the results of the computational predictions, especially for genes identified in GWAS studies to be associated with diseases, which are of translational interest.

Liquid drops impacted on textured surfaces undergo a transition from the Cassie state characterized by the presence of air pockets inside the roughness valleys below the drop to an impaled state with at least one of the roughness valleys filled with drop liquid. This occurs when the drop impact velocity exceeds a particular value referred to as the critical impact velocity. The present study investigates such a transition process during water drop impact on surfaces textured with unidirectional parallel grooves referred to as groove-textured surfaces. The process of liquid impalement into a groove in the vicinity of drop impact through de-pinning of the three-phase contact line (TPCL) beneath the drop as well as the critical impact velocity were identified experimentally from high speed video recordings of water drop impact on six different groove-textured surfaces made from intrinsically hydrophilic (stainless steel) as well as intrinsically hydrophobic (PDMS and rough aluminum) materials. The surface energy of various 2-D configurations of liquid-vapor interface beneath the drop near the drop impact point was theoretically investigated to identify the locally stable configurations and establish a pathway for the liquid impalement process. A force balance analysis performed on the liquid-vapor interface configuration just prior to TPCL de-pinning provided an expression for the critical drop impact velocity, U-o,U-cr, beyond which the drop state transitions from the Cassie to an impaled state. The theoretical model predicts that Uo, cr increases with the increase in pillar side angle, a, and intrinsic hydrophobicity whereas it decreases with the increase in groove top width, w, of the groove-textured surface. The quantitative predictions of the theoretical model were found to show good agreement with the experimental measurements of U-o,U-cr plotted against the surface texture geometry factor in our model, {tan(alpha/2)/w}(0.5).
